Ennis is a truly outstanding town. Undiscovered by many
visitors from abroad and other parts of Ireland. You can
unwrap the secrets of Ennis by taking a short break with us,
at any time of the year.
Ennis, and its environs, boast a wide range of truly original
visitor attractions. Lining its narrow, meandering streets is a
bewildering variety of unique retail outlets with traditional
customer service values, all underpinning the town’s position
as ‘the Boutique Capital of Ireland’. The town’s high service
ethos extends to its superb range of hotels, guest houses,
restaurants and on-street cafés.
The town is situated at the gateway to County Clare,
probably one of the country’s most authentic counties.
The county boasts a stunning range of visitor attractions,
from the awesome Cliffs of Moher and surfing beaches of
Lahinch to the very lovely hills and lakes of East Clare. Base
yourself in Ennis for a memorable stay.
This guide is published by Promote Ennis, a co-operative
marketing venture wherby over sixty local businesses work
in partnership with Ennis Town Council to promote the town
as a visitor destination.

What to Do in Ennis & its Environs
Heritage & History
Ennis Friary
The Ennis Friary is a Franciscan Friary founded by the O’Brien Kings of Thomond, in

an island in the River Fergus around which
the modern town of Ennis has grown.. The
well-preserved ruins consist of a nave,
chancel, belfry and an arcaded cloister.

Ennis Cathedral
Ballyalla Lake
Built between 1828 and 1842, following the repeal of the penal laws,
the Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul is certainly worth a visit. Situated at
the end of O’Connell Street.
A wildlife preserve and tranquil lakeside walking area. 4km from Ennis, off the Gort Road.
One of the best lakes in Europe for watching
wildfowl. About 5,000 wildfowl and waders
use the site over the winter.
Riverwalk Sculpture Trail
The meandering River Fergus runs through
the middle of Ennis, and is a well-known
trout and salmon fishery. At one time
small sailing boats made their way up-river from the Shannon and berthed in the
centre of the town at Woodquay. A recent riverside development is a pleasant
walk, along which some superb pieces of
sculpture have been erected.
Dromore Woods
Established as a nature reserve because of the diversity and richness of its flora and fauna. Situated
in the southeastern extremity of the Burren , a short
drive from Ennis. Comprises mixed woodland on
limestone interspersed with an array of lakes and
turloughs. A variety of walks of various duration and
difficulty run through the site. Hidden in the woods,
you will find the 17th century O’Brien Castle, standing on a lakeside, together with the sites.
Craggaunowen
061 360788
Craggaunowen tells the story of the arrival of the Celts in Ireland. A
major feature of the visit is a Crannóg, which is a reconstructed Iron
Age lake-dwelling. The site also includes a Ring Fort, beautiful woodland walks and a quaint tea-room. It is located near the village of Quin
and is clearly sign-posted from the village.

The county is renowned
for its natural beauty.
The Burren limestone area
has many unusual features
that make it unique in Europe. Its geology, flora, caves
and archaeology set it apart as
an area of great beauty and mystery.
Ailiwee Cave and the stunning Doolin Cave
are certainly worth visiting. The famous Cliffs of Moher stand as
800ft ramparts against the battering of the Atlantic Ocean. They
are majestic and offer superb views of the western Irish coastline.
Clare has a string of superb beaches within easy reach of Ennis,
some sandy and others rocky. The beach at Lahinch is renowned
for surfing. Lough Derg, at 32,000
acres, is the largest of the Shannon
Lakes. Along its shores are many picturesque villages.
The South Clare coast hosts shoals of
Dolphins: boats regularly visit them
from Carrigaholt and Kilrush. A very
popular destination, to the south of
Ennis, is Bunratty Castle & Folk Park,
Ireland’s most complete and authentic medieval castle. The Folk Park is a
fascinating recreation of 19th century rural Ireland.
Other attractions worth a visit, outside Ennis and its environs, include
the picturesque Burren Perfumery
& Floral Centre, the Burren Smokehouse, which has preserved the art of
smoking salmon, the beautifully-constructed Vandeleur Walled Garden
in Kilrush, the stunning and rugged
Aran Islands, one of the last outposts
of gaelic civilisation and, if you’re
researching a local genealogy, the
Clare Heritage Centre in Corofin.
