4-H Leaders Start the Year Off Right!
A leader training and networking event, was
held in Saskatoon on October 26-27, and in
Regina on November 2-3, with 27 leaders
attending at each location.
At LEADERAMA Saskatoon, leaders got creative
with their 4-H Cards and built this 4-H clover!
Each two-day event began Saturday morning with an orientation and welcome.
The rest of the day was down to business with presentations. Susan Weinheimer
talked us through the 4 ‘H’s of leadership and how to manage difficult situations
in her presentation, Leadership through Conflict Management. Ron Morris’
presentation Bridging the Generational Gap discussed the differences and
similarities of people from different generations and how we can best work
together. After a long day of learning, leaders bonded over a Saturday banquet
supper before getting a chance to relax and laugh during a special comedy show.
Sunday started with a special card game activity that, after some initial
confusion, got leaders talking about club expectations and the importance of
communicating with new 4-H families. Leaders spent the rest of the morning
at Share Fair discussing all aspects of 4-H clubs from fundraising to Achievement
Day to record books. It was an excellent opportunity to share experiences, get
new ideas from others and was the highlight of the event for many leaders.
It was a good looking group at LEADERAMA
Saskatoon.
Both events were a great success, providing lots of new ideas and information
and the opportunity for networking between 4-H Leaders, 4-H Staff and
4-H Council Board of Directors.
What did some leaders have to say?
“I have great new ideas to take back to my club.”
“What an eye opener!”
“Everything was great!”
Leaders and staff having some fun at
LeaderShop in North Battleford.
Leaders got down to business discussing
important club topics during Share Fair at
LEADERAMA Regina.
A total of 15 LeaderShop 4-H Leader workshops were held in five locations over three
consecutive weeks in late October and early November. The goal of the LeaderShop
events was to bring training opportunities to leaders in their own communities.
Dr. Dirk Morrison presented Tips, Tools & Tricks for 4-H Learning Leaders during the first
week. His presentation provided information for 4-H Project Leaders on how to know
your learners and develop a year-long learning plan with them, as well as how best to
evaluate and show evidence of what the members learned throughout the year.
4-H Leaders build this awesome card creation at
LEADERAMA - it represents the many directions
that 4-H can take you.
Page 4
Mr. Roy Prevost presented Leaders Creating and Helping Future Leaders and Retaining
and Motivating 4-H Members in 21st Century Communities in the second and third
weeks respectively. His presentations discussed leadership styles, developing a passion
for 4-H, how to empower your leaders and members to raise the bar for the entire club,
and how best to reach and engage our ‘Millenial/Gen Z’ members using technology and
involving them in the decision making. His message to ‘keep it fun’ was clear when he
brought clown noses for all in attendance!

Food for Thought
4-H News
We were so impressed with your response. Clubs and
individuals in Saskatchewan made a difference in their
communities by raising a combined total of 2899.3 lbs. of
food donations + 10 gallons of soup + 113 muffins!
Altogether, that’s right on track with our National Food
Drive goal of 3,011 lbs. (that’s one pound of food for each
member in our province). We did a great job! Every little
bit counts, and we are very proud of our clubs that have
made good on their pledge to larger service and better
living while learning about food security and making a
difference in their communities.

Great job to each club, group and individual that made a
contribution and congratulations to Clearview 4-H Club,
the Food for Thought Staff Challenge winner.
The Viscount 4-H Beef Club collected food
during their Achievement Day on July 1. A total of
47 lbs was collected and donated to the Humboldt
Food Bank. With a club of 22 kids they hope that this
helps to reach the goal of 3,011 lbs. for Saskatchewan.
The Northern Spirits 4-H Club collected 100 lbs. of
food donations which they donated to the Prince Albert
Share-A-Meal Food program. Member Dominque Berry
came up with the idea with some help from mom. All of
the members brought a little bit of food to a club meeting.
Vi Protz, a 4-H Leader with the Yorkton Creators 4-H
Club, says she just likes to grow things. Each year she gives
away fresh vegetables to needy families. This year she gave
away over 750 lbs. of veggies to families from Big River,
Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton and points in between.

Members of the Glen Ewen
Mixed 4-H Club have always
enjoyed the challenges.
This year when we
discussed the Food for
Thought challenge, they
wanted to hold a Food
Drive. It was their turn to
host the District #41 Rally,
so they asked the families
who attended to bring a
non perishable item. The
members also solicited
family, friends and the
community of Glen Ewen.
The
Food
Drive
was very successful and the club donated 108
lbs. of food to the Salvation Army in Estevan.

Exceeds
Their Goal!
Submitted by: Connie Chaplin
4-H News
Clearview 4-H Club of Fort Qu’Appelle set out with a goal to raise 150 lbs.off
locations. We collected all of the food donations from the drop-off points
and sorted the items for the different needs in the type of donations that
we were planning to make. Then, we got cooking! We made muffins for the
Elementary School Breakfast Program and homemade nutritious soup for the
local soup kitchen.
We delivered our ‘food items’ to the Outreach Program, the Elementary
School the Friendship Centre, the First Nation’s Bible Camp and the Soup
Kitchen in our community. We set a goal of 150 lbs, and we exceeded it! In
total we raised 415.5 lbs. of non-perishable food items for donation plus 10
gallons of homemade soup and 113 nutritious muffins. Along the way we
learned a lot about giving back to our community and part of our 4-H pledge.

Whitewood
4-H Beef Club Hosts Food Bank Blitz
Submitted by: Pamela Wushke
To celebrate 4-H Month, the members of the Whitewood 4-H Beef Club decided to “pledge their hands to larger service
and health to better living” by joining the Anniversary Food Drive and collecting non-perishable food items for the
food banks in their communities. A news release was sent to the local newspaper and posters were displayed in the
community-promoting 4-H month and the food drive. The club put drop boxes around town and in the school, challenging
their family, friends, classmates and community to “Join in the Challenge”. The food bank “blitz” lasted for one week,
ending Friday, November 15th. Our local newspaper and food bank representatives were in attendance for our weigh day!
We raised 374 lbs! We feel very blessed by the support of our community in helping us to support our local food bank.

On November 15, the Hallonquist Multiple 4-H Club was
planning to meet to weigh the food donations that we had
collected for the Food for Thought staff challenge.
Due to blizzard conditions and poor road conditions, we
had to cancel our meeting. So instead, each family took
pictures and weighed their food individually. We are
super proud and excited to say that altogether our club’s
15 members from seven families collected 348.8 lbs.!!!

National 4-H Member’s Conference
Through November 6-10, 14 Saskatchewan 4-H members
attended the National 4-H Conference in Toronto, Ontario.
We were chosen as delegates from our applications and
references. We met at the Heritage Inn in Saskatoon
the night before we flew out. We fought through snowy
roads to get there but once we checked in the 4-H fun
began with icebreakers. We woke up before the crack of
dawn as our flight left at 6:40 am on Wednesday morning.
Here are some highlights of a few of our favourite activities.
We enjoyed the Open Space Technology discussions which
allowed us to express our opinions while conversing with
others interested in the same topic. Some of our favourite
discussions were dense-energy forage, ways to provide
food banks with fresh produce and differences between
provincial agriculture. We also enjoyed Clayton Robins, the
Nuffield speaker and 4-H Manitoba’s Executive Director,
who was passionate, interesting and had some really great
ideas. One of our most educational experiences was the
“Food Share” activities where we learned about hungry
people in our nation and possible ways of helping them.
We had tons of fun at the Medieval Times Dinner and
Tournament, where the yellow knight was victorious
as a result of our cheering. While sitting on each
other’s knees, clinging to one another’s arms and
shuffling our buns, we made friendships nationwide.
The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair was a great place
to explore many different aspects of the agriculture
industry that we do not normally get to encounter.
The National 4-H Conference was an amazing experience!
Sincerely,
Saskatchewan Delegates: Carlie Bowditch , Tristan Richards,
Megan Schwark, Anna Verbonac, Grace Haggart, April
Haggart, Holli Spittal, Kaitlyn Sonmor, Karly Rumpel,
Kennedy Zagrodney, Miranda Heidecker, Holt Smith, Calli
Safnuk and Cameron Choquette.
Saying good bye was hard to do. We made so many great
friends that there were more than a few tears shed when
we had to part ways. Our flight was later in the day than the
majority of the other provinces’ on Sunday, so we spent the
day shopping and then headed to the airport. We finished
off our time together cheering for the Roughriders as they
defeated the BC Lions during our flight home. All in all, it was
a great opportunity to see new things and meet new people.
A huge thank you goes out to Sue Wood and Erin Smith who
were the organizers and leaders of the conference, also to
the YAC representatives Jacob Works and Allyson Barnable,
who were our Masters of Ceremony and to Tammy
Rumpel who was a fabulous chaperone for Saskatchewan.

North West Regional
Kickoff Day was ‘Off the Wall’!
4-H News
The North West Regional 4-H Kick Off Day filled up so fast that we had to add another session! In total, 47 participants
from seven 4-H clubs came to Grip It Indoor Rock Climbing in Saskatoon on December 1, 2013. Kelsey Dust, North
West Regional 4-H Specialist planned and hosted the Kick Off day for members from the North West to get active, try
something new and meet members from other 4-H clubs.
The day was a tonne of fun for all, and a new experience for many attendees. Thank you to the friendly Grip It staff
members who taught members how to climb and to the parents and 4-H leaders who helped out by ‘belaying’ for the
climbers, by holding the ropes for safety.
North East Regional Kickoff Day ‘Rock’ed!
Twenty three 4-H members from across the North East region came together on
Saturday, November 30 for the North East Regional 4-H Kick Off day at the Wadena
Curling Rink in Wadena, Saskatchewan. To ‘kick off’ the new 4-H year, Anna-Maria
Boechler, North East Regional 4-H Specialist, hosted a curling fun day event for
members and leaders of the North East to get together and have some fun. With four
sheets of ice, all the members had the opportunity to run some drills and play a few
ends.
For the 4-Hers that were new to curling, there was the opportunity to learn basic
techniques on the ice. For other experienced 4-Hers who had curled for many years,
there was time to brush up on some skills and play a few friendly ends. Delores Syrota,
a former Provincial Women’s and Senior Women’s Champion, and Duane Guina, a 4-H
parent instructed the 4-H members on curling techniques. Everyone had fun learning
how to curl thier rock, aim their rock and sweep.
Thank you to everyone who came and made this event possible, and for all the 4-H
members who wanted to learn more about curling! We had a lot of fun!

City Survival
Submitted by Christine Reinhart,
President
The Saskatchewan 4-H Alumni
hosted City Survival from November
22-24 in Saskatoon at the University
of Saskatchewan campus. We are
proud to say that the event was a
huge success this year! We hosted
13 members that were literally from
all across Saskatchewan, and even
had a couple members join us from
Manitoba.
Our first night was a lot of fun. We
spent a few hours getting to know
each other, by playing ice breaker
games and then a round of glow
bowling. The next day the members
were given a tour of the entire
University of Saskatchewan campus,
including the brand new dairy barn!
We gave our participants a photo
scavenger hunt challenge: to take as
many photos with places on campus
that were on a list that we made for
them! For the next challenge, the 4-H
members had to make a delicious
meal to share with the entire City
Survival group. Did I mention that they
had to work with a small budget and
figure out how to take a city bus to get
to the grocery store? The weekend
ended with the Alumni giving survival
tips on the things that we wish we
would have known before we entered
post-secondary such as finding a place
to rent, registering for classes, and fun
things to do on campus while going to
school that don’t cost a lot of money.
We were also proud to present a $250
bursary to Hayley Schuddemat of the
Manitoba Tilston Beef Club who went
above what was expected of her in
academics, extracurricular activities,
and her dedication to 4-H.
We would like to thank each member
who made the trip and joined us
for a weekend in the city! You were
such an excellent group and we can
only hope that you had as fun as us
Alumni had! Good luck in your future,
and don’t forget to look us up when
you are in the city. A big thank-you to
the 4-H Saskatchewan staff for being
our “go-to people” when we needed
assistance!
To any members who are currently
in Grade 10 and 11, and think that
a weekend in the Saskatoon full of
fun and useful tips is a great idea,
keep your eyes open next fall for
registration information. We are
already started planning City Survival
2014 and we would love to have you!

Staff Challenge #2
Looking Forward;
Looking Back
Events and Opportunities
Harold the Hare was busy
researching the history of 4-H
in Saskatchewan in preparation
for this staff challenge!
We challenge you to find out more about the history of
4-H in your community and to think about what the 4-H
future holds!
Deadline for entry: February 20, 2014
As 2013 is coming to a close, we reflected back on how
special a year we’ve had with the 100th anniversary
celebrations of 4-H in Canada. We’ve learned all about the
history of 4-H in Canada and become motivated for the
next 100 years.
All this reminiscing got our 4-H staff thinking, how much
do we really know about the history of 4-H Saskatchewan?
Well, we set to work digging up dates and facts and, with
Harold`s help, we put together a 4-H Saskatchewan history
page and posted it on our website. This year, we also built
a replica grain elevator and decorated it with historical
photos and donated it to the National 4-H Museum in
Roland, Manitoba, so that a piece of 4-H Saskatchewan
history would last for future generations to see. We
thought about what our future holds too! In 2017, 4-H
Saskatchewan will have our own 100th anniversary and we
plan to celebrate! We are also making a 4-H History book.
We think there will be more 4-H members and 4-H leaders
joining the 4-H Saskatchewan family, and new and exciting
programs and projects!
We challenge you to find out more about the history of
4-H in your community and to think about what the 4-H
future holds!
Need some suggestions to get started? Make your own
club history page, or even a Club Scrapbook that your club
can continue to add to over the years! Try talking to past
leaders and members in your club first, or your family if
they were members. Talk to the people in your community
like a seniors’ group or agricultural society. You may be
able to find information from the local newspaper archives,
the town or R.M. office, local museum or in town history
books. Let us know who helped you!
To Enter the staff challenge, get your club to participate
and send information about how you participated and
what you found out to your Regional 4-H Specialist before
February 20, 2014. The top entry will earn a fun day prize.
Share your club’s story!

Events and Opportunities
Saskatchewan 4-H Council
Annual General Meeting
Annual General Meeting [AGM] will be held March 15 and 16, 2014 at the Delta Bessborough in Saskatoon.
AGM is an important business meeting where 4-H policies are discussed. It’s also a lot of FUN, a great event to meet
members and leaders from across the province and an opportunity to learn new things!
Each District 4-H Council must pay the AGM fee of $341.25, which allows them to send one 4-H member delegate
and one 4-H Leader delegate to represent them. Visitors can also attend AGM. They participate in all meetings and
activities; but do not have voting privileges. The visitor fee is $273 including GST.
The deadline for AGM Registration is December 12, 2014. Fees and forms are due by this
date. You must be approved by your District 4-H Council to register. All late registrations
will be subject to a $100 late fee.
All 4-H District Councils can submit resolutions to change or add to Saskatchewan
4-H Policies – this is how you can make an impact on the way the 4-H Program in
Saskatchewan operates. Your District should discuss any resolutions it would like to
make at your Fall Meeting, as the deadline to submit any resolutions is January 31,
2014. To be accepted, the resolution must be accompanied by District Council meeting
minutes addressing that resolution.
Canadian 4-H Youth Advisory Committee [YAC]
Saskatchewan Representative
If you are at least 16 years old and have at least two years
experience as a Saskatchewan 4-H member, you can be the
member representing our Saskatchewan 4-H Council at the
national level as a member of Canadian 4-H Youth Advisory
Committee (YAC). The YAC is made up of one senior 4-H
representative from each 4-H organization across Canada.
The YAC initiative was established in 2005 to allow a youth
voice to be part of program development and the decision
making processes of 4-H at the National level.
This is an opportunity to meet 4-H members from across
Canada, and even develop an international 4-H network.
You will have an opportunity to test and further develop
leadership and communication skills.
Application forms are available from the Provincial 4-H
office. YAC members must be registered 4-H members for
the duration of their YAC term, and able to travel in Canada
independently. The application deadline is February 15,
2014.
Do you want to represent your club, and region?
Do you want to be more involved in 4-H?
By joining the Board of Directors or Advisory Council
you will meet members and leaders from across the
province, represent 4-H Saskatchewan at events, and
learn more about how the 4-H program operates.

The Foundation solicits and

Members of 4-H Saskatchewan and their families help preserve the
values and sense of responsibility that enrich the social fabric of our
communities. 4-H provides opportunities for young citizens to reach
their full potential.
4-H members set goals and develop leadership skills (public speaking,

programs, opportunities and resources.
On September 24, the staff of Masterfeeds LP came together for the Masterfeeds
National Sales Meeting in Saskatoon to raise money for a donation for 4-H
Saskatchewan. Masterfeeds LP donated $500 and issued the challenge to their
staff to match their donation. The staff surpassed their goal, raising $530.00 in
just a few short minutes. Thank you Masterfeeds LP and staff for your generosity!

The Carrot River Light Horse 4-H Club has been
fundraising for several years to build permanent

addition makes the riding arena more useful for
the community.
Members from the club used their Build a

entry for Community Futures’ Challenge
4 Communities 2013. They would like to
raise funds to build a camp kitchen for their
community sports grounds, so that the

Riverview Riders
Submitted by Debbie Sturby, General Leader
After battling inches and inches of rain
earlier this summer, the Riverview
Riders Light Horse 4-H Club was finally
able to have Achievement Day on
August 28. We were blessed with a
beautiful day and started, as usual,
with a group photo. Then we mounted
up and began our demonstrations.
Everyone did very well, and it was nice
to be able to show our parents and
friends what we had been working on
during the season. Then each member
had to complete a horsemanship
pattern chosen by the judge.
The Cloverbuds hit the arena to do
a musical drill… well done kids (and
leaders).
The juniors, intermediates and seniors
joined forces to do a drill of their own.
Although the Cloverbuds were a hard
act to follow, the older group pulled
off a great drill as well.
Page 26
Then we were ready for some barrel
racing and pole bending. It was time
to relax and have some fun!
The day wrapped up with an amazing
supper and awards.

4-H Year End was a HOOT!
Submitted by: Tyra Grant
Maple Creek 4-H – Our club went on a road trip at the
end of September. Altogether there were 48 excited
people! The first stop was the Roger’s Sugar factory at
Taber, Alberta. We learned how sugar was made from
sugar beets grown in the area.
Next we got lost… at the Blue Sky corn maze in
Coaldale, Alberta. We had a picnic there and did a
treasure hunt in the corn. We got to see and handle
birds at the Birds of Prey exhibit also in Coaldale.
There were burrowing owls, barn owls and golden
eagles. We even gave a bald eagle a shower.
Then it was off to Lethbridge! The waterpark at the
hotel was awesome. The parents seemed to like the
hot tub. We had a pizza party, too. In the morning

we went to the Rocky Mountain Turf Club Race Track.
Many people sported their derby hats. A wonderful
lady named Rose gave us an amazing behind the
scenes tour. We went to the Jockey’s room to see
all their tiny equipment. We saw some friendly
race horses at the barns. We even got to stand by
the starting gates as the horses took off. We got to
have our picture taken in the Winner’s circle! It was
exciting to pick out the best horses. We had so much
fun. Make sure to go to the races if you haven’t been
there. There is lot to see and do for the whole family.
This is my last report as I have moved onto a new
duty this year. I am still in the beef project and have
Hereford steer calf picked out. I hope you got to see
all the fun 4-H can be!

Happy Centre 4-H Club
Successful Trail Ride Fundraiser!
Submitted by Happy Centre 4-H Club.
A HUGE thank you to all who sponsored and helped out with the
Happy Centre 4-H Club trail ride fundraiser! This day would not
have been a success without the help of the following people:
•Bernie Tocher – sponsorship of all the amazing homemade
buns!
•Diamond Horseshoe Ranch – provided a water truck for horses
and great trails for our riders!
•Every rider who came out to make the day a success and help
out our 4-H Club!
•Our 4-H families – without you guys, this day would not have
been a success!
On Saturday September 14, 2013 the Happy Centre 4-H Club
kicked off the year with a trail ride fundraiser. The day in itself was
a huge success! The weather was perfect, the bugs minimal and
the riders relaxed and happy! The club’s members worked very
hard to provide trail riders and their horses a great day of fun and
relaxation. The ride was held at Happy Centre School, 10 miles
north of Melville, Saskatchewan. By 10 a.m., the 43 registered
riders had hit the trails and ventured out for the day. Lunch was
provided for the riders at the half-way point on the trail, followed
by a delicious hot supper back at the school at the end of the ride.
Some of the riders even took advantage of the beautiful weather
the past weekend and turned it into a “camp-out” with their
horses. Could it get any better!?!
The Happy Centre 4-H Club managed to raise roughly $1,400 for
our 2013-14 4-H year! With this money, the club plans on hosting
some equine clinics for 4-H members as well as the possibility of
some ‘fun’ shows in spring 2014. The Happy Centre 4-H Club is
always welcoming new members! The club considers itself a very
“low-key” club with a focus on safety, horsemanship and ride-rideride! The members have a very wide set of interests with their
horses as well. As the year progresses the club will be working on
different aspects of riding – everything from jumping obstacles to
learning how to move cattle! The more the members ride and work
with their horses, the better “the team” will become. The trail ride
was a great example of the many riding disciplines our members
and families enjoy. The majority of Happy Centre 4-H members are
fairly young members – this being the second year as a 4-H group.
