EMERGENCY
PREPAREDNESS WEEK.
I am absolutely convinced everyone
has a 72 hour emergency kit ready at
all times, but if you have lost yours
now is a good time to build your kit.
Emergency kits do not have to cost
a lot of money or be the Cadillac
version you probable have most
items already. Just not in one place
or in a kit. Check out the website
WWW.ONTARIO.CA/BEPREPARED for good information on
what should go into your preparedness kit.
Having the basics immediately
available may never be needed, but
in the event there is an emergency
and you must immediately evacuate,
having your emergency kit will be a
life saver. There are many variables
and differences for each family that
I am not able to set out a generic kit.
Going to the Ontario web site is
your best and safest bet. There are
many emergency sites out there,
most trying to sell you a kit. The
Ontario site is an approved and safe
site with good information.
If you have any questions you can
call the fire station at 935 2622.
If you have an emergency, be it illness, injury or fire, DIAL 911
immediately. Provide the operator
with the information needed for the
fire and emergency services to
respond with the proper resources. It
is hard to answer questions when
you are in a hurry or upset, but the
information is vital to those
responding to your call. Remember,
we would rather respond to a call
and not be required, than not be
called to respond and should have
responded.
Your fire and emergency services
volunteers will be continuing to
train and improve our skills all summer with training courses and exercises. This takes a lot of time away
from our families and other hobbies.
Our Municipality is very fortunate
and can be proud of all our volunteers for their dedication and professionalism in providing both fire and
emergency services whenever needed. So when you see them out training, or taking a few moments to
enjoy the summer, take a second to
let them know their efforts are
appreciated.
As Always,
Have a safe month

Did You Know? by Mary Germain
So pleased that some of you are reading my Did You Know feature. I received a call that
I have to send congratulations to Penny and Ron Smith as they will be celebrating their
50th anniversary in June. 1966 sure was a busy year!
One week in April was set aside to recognize volunteers. In Oliver Paipoonge we sure
have no shortage of them. I just convened the Soup and Sandwich, in support of the
Duke Hunt Historical Museum. I made 30 phone calls for food, etc. and was never
refused. Special mention must go out to Sheila, Linda, Marie and Anita for running the
kitchen so efficiently. We made a total of $750.00 for the Museum. Thanks to everyone!
SPEAKING OF VOLUNTEERS.....Slate River is in dire need of help to organize kids
baseball. This is a great way to get out one night a week for fun and exercise and learn
the basics of baseball and sportsmanship. Should start about mid May and run for 6
weeks, weather permitting. So come on all you Moms, Dads, Aunts, Uncles,
Grandparents and neighbours....we are waiting for your call. Mary at 475-9520 and
Charlene at 475-9689.

Do I Look Fat in This?
Chix
in the Stix
Now there’s a loaded question for
you right? I don’t really want to
know the answer. Here’s the thing.
Remember a couple of months ago
when I was talking about skating
and the ordeal of bending over to tie
up your skates while wearing multiple layers of clothes and not being
able to breathe? Well with the
recent spring-like weather I started
discarding some items from my
daily dress code. First went the
socks. I much prefer to be barefoot,
even in my boots. Then went my
old faithful ‘holy’ button-up sweater.
Then the tights and the pair of leggings I like to wear under my pants
to stay warm. Which is when I discovered the truth. You know those
layers I was having trouble with?
They weren’t clothes at all. They’re
attached. To me. Seems I’ve added
a few layers over the winter months.
I had a hunch. The seat belt was getting a bit snugger. I kept blaming it
on my bulky winter coat. And now
that summer is on the horizon it’s
time to face fats. I mean facts. I
need to shed some real layers.
Warm weather helps. I’m not a big
fan of the cold so outdoor activities
in the winter simply aren’t my cup
of tea. But spring and summer are
different. And it isn’t unusual for
me to drop a few sizes doing my
everyday warm weather chores.
Which got me thinking about all the
money people spend on gym memberships to stay fit and trim. We
could really just start up a ‘country
club’ and have
city folks come
out here and
work on our
farms, big and small, or in our country yards, and charge them for it.
We’d have to package it up for them,
use some creative marketing, give it
some fancy name, maybe start a
farm just for this project alone. We
could hold classes on how to split
and pile firewood, how to bend and
pick rows of berries, peas and beans.
Potato digging. Corn shucking.
Clearing brush. Digging trenches.
Tossing bales of hay. Mending
fences. Hanging laundry. Heck, driving tractors even. Think of all the
muscle groups you use each day in
the course of your country life doing
chores that are just part of your normal routine. The carefully planned
moves required for shovelling the
winter layers from the chicken coup
by Cindy Harasen
alone would be hard to match in
your standard Zumba or weight lifting class. I don’t think there’s a
Bowflex or Nordic Track or exercise
bike around that could give you the
full body work out you can get from
working on a farm. Especially not
with the bonus of the fresh air on top
of it all. There might really be a
business idea in here somewhere!
At the very least we hard working
country folk don’t ever have to
worry about joining a gym to keep in
shape. Our prized rural lifestyle
guarantees regular opportunities to
exercise and maintain our robust
chiselled physiques. Give me a
month or two of that country yoga
and I’ll hopefully peel off another
layer and be able to find mine again!

On Sunday, April 17th the Kakabeka Legion hosted a 90th Birthday Party for Comrade Bill Majbroda. B ill and
Mary have been regulars at the legion for many years now as Mary had been the President up to the end of
last year. Bill and Mary have volunteered many, many hours to ensure the well -being of this branch of the Royal
Canadian Legion. Not only do they put many days and hours into the legion but they volunteer for other organizations as well. Some of those being the Diabetic Association as well as the Hymers Fall Fair. The Kakabeka
Legion and the comrades and friends in the community want to extend Best Wishes to Bill on his 90th Birthday
and Best Wishes to both Bill and Mary as they retire their formal positions at the branch and take some time this
summer to enjoy camping and life in general. You both deserve it so HAVE AN ENJOYABLE SUMMER!

CRESTVIEW SCHOOL
CELEBRATES EARTH DAY!
On Thursday, April 21st, Crestview
School celebrated Earth Day in a big
way! 75 students (and many parents,
grandparents & siblings!) walked or
biked to school! They were escorted
by 3 community police cruisers! The
weather was perfect and everyone
arrived to school safely! Many students biked or walked from home.
Many students met at the Rural
Family Resource Centre to walk.
Other students met at the Murillo
Library and took the bike trail that
links the 2 ends of Rubin Drive. Our
students know that using active transportation to
school, to the library, to a friend’s house or to the
baseball fields is a healthy, earth-friendly way of
getting around! Keep your eyes open as lots of bikers and walkers are out in the neighbourhood!

Time on My Hands
May 1966 (apparently Part 2)
by Karen Craib
It's official - I'm old! You probably knew
that. After researching May 1966 I added
it to list of dates I've written about, and
surprise - I already did it. One of the newspaper articles did feel familiar, upon
checking there were 3 things I'd already
written about.
And then....I realized I'd already written
about S.S. No. 5 too.Oh well....Here's
what else happened that May.
Mrs. Joan Smout as re-elected president of
the Rosslyn Women's Institute. Other officers were Mrs. M. Sideen, Mrs. M. Naida,
Mrs. D. Yurick and Mrs. E. Wakewich.
In other Rosslyn news Mrs. Virgil Roman
had her mother visiting from Germany.

In Paipoonge the average tax rate was
down slightly.
Representing the Recreation Committee,
Mrs. Addie Wing told council that about
120 children take part in the swimming
and water safety lessons each year.
Council was asked to assist with paving
the walk to the pool, so dirt wouldn't be
tracked in.

A new antibiotic, Myxin was developed.
Dr. D.C. Gillespie was one of the
researchers. His late grandfather Angus
Gillespie farmed in Slate River.
In Oliver the tax levy remained "pretty
much the same". Garbage dumps were
cleaned up for the Spring. They were open
on Wednesday evenings and Saturday
mornings.

For 1 week only Cherie A Go Go was
doing her Go Go dance at the Blue Swan
Inn. She was accompanied by Bits 'N
Pieces.
The "World's fastest honky-tonk piano
player" Gloves McGinty was playing in
the Dominion Lounge.
Eatons was selling powder room sets for
$43.25. It included a toilet, seat, wall
basin and faucet. A friend of mine just
paid $90 for a new toilet seat.
At A & W you could buy a chicken burger
for 60 cents or a barrel of chicken for
$5.25.
Mrs. J. Garland acted as hostess for the
Women's Auxiliary of the Church of the
Messiah's monthly meeting. President
Mrs. J.H. Beaney was in charge. Miss
Irene Pool would be the June hostess.
The Fort William Municipal Golf Course
was the first to open regular greens. It is
the driest of the local golf courses.

Mrs. Rae Schan presided at the Slate River
Women's Institute meeting. Four voting
delegates were elected to attend the district annual of South Thunder Bay W.I.
Elected were Mrs. Berjet Carlson, Mrs.
Harry Mintenko, Mrs. Rae Schan and Mrs.
Steve Germain.
Rosslyn resident Miss Shirley Walz wed
Stanley T. Cooke. Her parents Mr. and
Mrs. Frederick Walz owned Walz store in
Rosslyn (I have many happy memories of
that store, especially the candy counter. I
still dream about it). her empire-line gown
was make of
silk ligoda. Her honeymoon outfit was a
petal-pink crochet knit dressmaker suit.

Thunder Bay
The Thunder Bay 4-H Club is starting their newest adventure the “4-H
Veterinary Project”. The first meeting was held on April 20th with old and
new members attending.
This project will teach members about animal anatomy and physiology and
how to recognize and treat some common illnesses. As always this will be
a fun and interactive project where we “learn to do by doing”. One of the
many outings will be to visit a veterinary clinic as well as visiting a farm
to have hands on experience with animals. The third regular meeting will

After perusing the newspapers I treated
myself to a delicious lunch at Cronos. I
enjoyed a Mocha while looking over my
photocopies and deciding what news to
write about. When I worked at the library
we went there for lunch *every*
Wednesday. I still try to get there every
few weeks. If you go in the winter months,
Tom makes amazing soups.
Well I hope you have a pleasant May and
wish all the mothers out there a Happy

Treat Our Environment Kindly
For those of you who dare to throw your garbage overboard, consider how long it takes this garbage to disintegrate:
• Paper towels: one to four weeks
• Newspaper: six weeks
• Apple cores: two months
• Cardboard cereal or similiar boxes: two months
• Waxed milk cartons: three months
• Tin cans: fifty years
• Styrofoam cups: fifty years
• Aluminum cans: two hundred years
• Regular plastic 6-ring beverage holders: four hundred years
• Disposable diapers: four hundred and fifty years
• Plastic bottles: four hundred and fifty years
• Monofilament fishing line: six hundred and fifty years
• Nylon line: six hundred and fifty years
You can see that just by doing your small part, you play a big part
in keeping our environment healthy!
