On the other hand, our new column, Local Hideaways may tend
to undermine all those good intentions by taking you to "the
best Chicago Dog west of State Street" right around the corner
on Corona Road. In future issues, we will visit various local,
family-owned eateries, from burger joints and taco stands to
tom kha gai, that we think deserve your attention. Also in this
issue, Locals of Note profiles Harry & Linda Reid, a local couple
in real life and on stage; he writes the plays and she directs
them, and together they promote their passion for local theater.
Speaking of creative arts, check out the information on how you
can nominate a local music teacher for Best Music Educator,
with a cash prize for the winner.
And just a reminder, Penngrove Proud is always available online.
Every issue can be found at: penngroveproud.com. Let your out
of town friends know, so they too can keep up with all our
local happenings.

Time keeps on slipping, slipping,
slipping into the future, as the great
American poet Steve Miller once
said, and perhaps there is no more
perfect truism. Spring is indeed
nigh, fresh hope, fresh blooms and
sunshine; time to get outside, shed those winter pounds and get
fit. Patty Lyn Tweten's article on local fitness is the perfect tonic
to get you up off your feet and out the door.

Finally, we want to invite you to get involved in our Facebook
page. We put it up a while ago, but have not done a lot with it
as yet. But so many folks use FB (see, I know the lingo) and we
at the Proud realize that we should too. We plan on being more
pro-active and invite you all to ‘like’ our page, and share your
thoughts, comments and views; maybe start a local dialogue
here in the Penngrove community for, well for anything that
Penngrovians want to talk about. As an added incentive for
anyone that does go and ‘like’ our page and makes a comment,
you will be entered into a raffle for a $25 gift certificate to any
advertiser in our Spring issue. So head on over to it now, while
you’re thinking about it!
Time to plant those seeds for the future...

Boomers shape fitness in the New Millennium
By Patty Lyn Tweten
Penny Elliot (59) and Susan Lourme (51) perform jhillikāsana (cricket pose)
A lifelong interest in exercise and health among baby boomers has created a niche in the fitness industry as the generation ages. The
post-war boom of people born between 1946 and 1964 are now in the 48-66-age range. Raised with an appreciation of and interest in physical
well-being, these individuals are creating a minor boom in businesses in and around Penngrove that caters to fitness, strength and well-being.
Get Fit Young Man!
Horace Greeley exhorted youths to move west for the good of the
country in the mid-1800’s. In the mid-1900’s, President John F.
Kennedy developed a different manifesto for America’s youth. In
1960, Kennedy penned The Soft American, an open letter to the
public published in Sports Illustrated. He expressed his desire for
young Americans to become participants in a vigorous life. Youth
of the day started hiking 50-mile treks to show their support.
53 years later, the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and
Nutrition carries on President Kennedy’s message.
As this fitness-inspired generation has aged, workout staples, fads
and crazes have followed in its wake, from the jogging craze in
the early 70’s to Jane Fonda and aerobics in the 80’s, and
Jazzercise in the 90’s. A boomer-aged fitness consumer these
days is faced with a confusing array of options at the gym (yoga,
Pilates, strength training, martial arts, zumba) and outside of it
(power walking, cycling, trail running, rock climbing, triathlons),
with more choices coming every year.
physical changes in muscle mass, metabolism, aerobic capacity,
blood pressure and bone density. These changes can be slowed
or even improved by physical activity. And age can bring the onset of diseases such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and
osteoporosis. According to Cedric Bryant, PhD, the chief exercise
physiologist at the American Council on Exercise, “no matter what
area [of aging] you look to, research shows that being physically
fit into your senior years will keep you healthier and active longer.”
The USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA),
located at Tufts University, believes that people can reverse many
of the physical declines associated with aging through aerobics, strength training and flexibility training. In the 1990’s, Tufts
researchers identified 10 “biomarkers of aging” (see sidebar) that
can be positively influenced by exercise. In a follow-up study in
2006, it was proposed that controlling these biomarkers could
extend the years of good health and reduce the years of decline.
For boomers, that means more time on the tennis court, with
the grandkids, and, more importantly, more years of engaged
independent living. According to the International Health, Racquet
Boomers’ Fountain of Youth?

With longevity as the motivation, is it any wonder?
It’s Not About the Scale
Many people come to fitness with the sole goal of losing weight.
Each of our contributors made a point to highlight the many physical and spiritual benefits of a regular fitness regimen. For example,
engaging regularly in a fitness routine can improve mental clarity
and sleep. John Pecoraro points out, “Exercise improves all your
cognitive functions — awareness, alertness — and your vitality.” Fitness enhances other activities as well. Jim and Cindy Tuck of Main
Street Fitness feel that building strength is the foundation for
better health and it helps prevent injuries. Exercise when you’re
above the age of 50 can help control cholesterol, reduce blood
pressure and increase bone density. These benefits may even
lead to a reduction in medication. Yalda Teranchi of Club One observes, “[when you exercise] you’re more in tune with your body.”
“
“
It’s never too late to exercise.
You can go your own speed...
Karen McDonald and Cogen Bohanec, karate and yoga instructors,
emphasize the spiritual benefits of engaging in a type of fitness
that is both an art form and method of exercise. “People who have
incorporated fitness as a way of life are spiritual,” says Bohanec.
“If people realized how strong they are after 50, it would change
their perspective.” Karen adds, “It’s never too late to exercise. You

can go your own speed. [Karate] is all about finding your center
and being grounded.”
Retirees who have left the social work environment, can find a
social component at their local club or gym. “People in the 70-plus
age range love coming to Club One because of the energy, sense
of acceptance and commitment to a specific instructor,” says
Yalda. Martha Domont, owner of Petaluma Valley Athletic Club
(PVAC) for 15 years, has seen many of her members age and reach
their retirement years. The family-oriented club has a number of
social activities that welcome grandchildren through to grandparents. “Our real focus has always been to create an environment
where all levels of family can do something active together — play
together, get healthy together and stay together,” she adds.
Mature Minds and Bodies
Mature fitness consumers have a completely different motivation
to “hit the gym” than your average 25-year-old. And they’re often
looking for a different result. For a young adult, the gym may be
a place to “get cut”, “tone” and burn off some Kcals before going
to work in the morning. “When you’re younger, exercise is more
aesthetic and social. As you get older, it’s more of a fundamental
health issue,” says Jim Tuck. “People are seeing fitness as more of
a necessity.” While many older people seek fitness at the recommendation of their doctor; others can be jolted into action from a
personal tragedy or the illness of a close family member.
Whatever their reason for walking in the door, all our contributors agree that people over 50 are very motivated to succeed in
and maintain their fitness. For that reason, they are highly coveted and rewarding clients. “[A boomer] has more of a sense of
urgency and commitment than younger people,” observes Yalda
Teranchi. Cogan Bohanec, whose intense style of yoga may not
seem like the first choice in
“senior” fitness disciplines,
treasures his older clients.
“My favorite groups of people are the 50+ because
they are really hard workers.
Older people have learned
that they have to work hard.
They’re more disciplined.”
At PVAC, where they’ve
been hosting senior tennis tournaments for years,
Martha Domont has had a John Pecoraro looks on while members of his Boomer Fit
class work their core
lot of opportunity to observe
the older folks. "Seniors can be competitive, but they are wiser.
There's a lot of humor [happening] with them."

Mama Barretta has been wishing for
a way to bring her breads and baked
goods to a wider audience. Earlier this
year, Intuit granted that wish. Mama
Baretta’s dream is going to come true
thanks to the Small Business Big Wishes
campaign. “My Salted Caramel Nut
Lace cookie won Best Cookie this year
at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair,
which was a huge win for the gluten free
world,” the second-generation Italian
baker wrote in her entry. “My business
wish is to package my winning cookie
with color printed individual serving
bags for distribution to grocery stores.”
Well, wishes do come true! The annual

their Trucker's Ball in early May, so you'll
need to dust off your dancing shoes! And
then keep them out for the annual Luau
in August. Let's keep supporting them as
they support our town. "So, You Want
to Start a Brewery..?" has been written
by Tony Magee, the founder of the local
Laugunitas Brewing Company. Tony
and his wife, moved to San Francisco
in 1987 and he founded the brewery in
the fall of 1993. This is the story of the
first 20 years of one brewery among
hundreds that brought a flowering
of uniquely American brewing styles
that will still be brewed a generation
from today (bottom photo). Spring is fast
approaching, try to get out and enjoy the
beautiful flowers and tree blossoms that
are bursting out everywhere (middle photo).
Here's an interesting opportunity for local area high
schools: for every performer on the GRAMMY stage,
there is a teacher who played a critical role in getting
them there, so the Recording Academy, host of the annual
GRAMMY Awards, also invest
a lot of time and resources in
supporting music education
in schools, especially valuable
now with government funds so
hard to come by. They promote
a GRAMMY Camp each year
for aspiring young musicians,
and this year for the first time,
they are presenting an award
honoring the Best Music Teacher
in the country, as voted on by
Cliff Eveland
the public.
One teacher will be selected from ten finalists and flown to
L. A. to accept the award and pick up a $10,000 honorarium
for their school. All finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium
as well. Our suggestion is Petaluma High School's
Cliff Eveland who is not only a great teacher, but a champion
of music education raising vital funds each year with the
annual Petaluma Music Festival. The deadline for nominations
is April 15th and anyone can submit a recommendation by
going to: http://www.grammyintheschools.com/programs/

Good morning,
Enjoy your magazine. One
question: Why do you print the
map of Penngrove upside down
with north pointing down?
Makes it hard to get oriented
with regular maps.
Thanks,

Editors note: We areso glad that
you enjoy our magazine, thank
you. We have the map that way

Penngrove School has a brand new website, beautifully designed and full of
information. Take a look at www.penngroveelementary.org for all the the school's
current events and activities. A very successful 'ice cream social' was held recently,
giving everyone a chance to meet with some of the teachers and administrators,
along with friends of the school, old and new. There was also a silent auction held in
conjunction with it where an interesting array of items were available to bid on, with
all proceeds benefitting the school. Plans for the playground shelter, made possible
by the $10,000 grant from Rayley's, are moving ahead. Beautiful landscaped plants
are blooming all around the classrooms, as well
as blossoming berries near the play area and new
pear trees alongside the track, all thanks to the
Plantin’ Panthers. It's almost time for this years
Annual Talent Show, being held on April 12th. This
event is a lot of fun for kids, parents and community alike. Come and check it out. The 6th Grade student classes will be heading off to Camp Navarro in
early May for the annual Outdoor Education week.
Keep a look out for various fund-raisers going on
in the next few weeks to help them out. Great job
to our Student Council members who represented
Penngrove School Garden
Penngrove at the Petaluma City School Board
meeting earlier in the year! You made us proud! Penngrove School once again had
the chance to send their Spelling Bee champs to compete in the South County
Spelling Bee this past February. Good job to all the participants. If all goes as
planned, Penngrove will become Penngrove Elementary Charter School in the 201314 school year. The Petaluma City School Board has approved the Charter and the
next step is for the California Department of Education to approve it as well. The
"Call for Art - Youth Arts Exhibit" will be on display at the school from March 15 29, 2013. This year's theme is "Art Shapes the World". Go see for yourselves what
wonderful creativity comes out of our students. Penngrove School has a wonderful
recess program called Recess Renaissance, offering many special activities for our
children to participate in like the mileage club, the dinosaur garden, knitting club,
Pixie and pebble pets, quiet reading in Ms. Cheal's room and jump rope. Recently
added is Freddy's Creation Station, providing even more opportunities to build and
create. This is an invaluable program, helping kids to socialize and have fun. The
PTA board is looking for new members. This would give you a chance to better
know the school and all the staff and volunteers, and give you a voice in directing
how PTA funds are spent. If you think you might be interested, please email Leslie

north her mother always remembered the small town of Healdsburg. After
struggling with the sea for four years her father and mother moved the family to
the pastoral Sonoma community. Linda graduated from Healdsburg High School,
married and raised three children and then separated from her husband and
became a single mom.
Linda & Harry Reid
by Chuck Lucas
When Harry Met Linda
As the biblical Noah duly noted and any
player at a poker table in Las Vegas will
readily attest, good things come in pairs.
If that is so, Linda Loveland-Reid and her
husband Harry B. Reid are a pair of aces.
In 1980, Linda was working in Santa Rosa
at the United Way for North Bay. She would
take daily walks during her lunch break
and every day she strolled by a beautiful
house on McDonald Avenue. The home was
warm and inviting and the door was often
left open and she was always curious about
what the owners of the home might be like.
When Linda was four, her family moved from her birthplace in the San Fernando
Valley to Crescent City where her father became a fisherman. On her trips up
SPRING 2013
She moved to Santa Rosa where she began working in the insurance business.
She soon became involved in civic affairs and that led her to become the
associate director of the United Way from 1973 until 1981.
In 1980, Linda went to a dance at the Flamingo Hotel that would change her life.
She was asked to dance by a handsome man named Harry Reid. They hit it off
from the beginning. They began to date and shortly thereafter Harry invited her
to his Santa Rosa home. As she pulled up to his house her jaw dropped. It was
the house that she would stroll by on her daily walks and that had piqued her
curiosity about the owner. Six weeks later, Linda accepted Harry's marriage
proposal and they were married six months after that in 1981.
Harry was in the Navy in the spring of 1945 at the end of World War II in the V-12
officers training program. He then went to Ohio State University in 1946.
In the fall of 1946, at age 19, he apprenticed with famed architect, Frank Lloyd
Wright, in Wisconsin at Wright's famous Taliesin retreat. Taliesin is the Welsh word
meaning “Shining Brow.” There he experienced a communal lifestyle and was able
to interact and collaborate with one of the world's most famous architects on a
daily basis. Wright is known for his sense of space and attention to detail. Harry
was a worthy student and Wright's influence would impact his own work.
After he left Taliesin he worked various construction jobs giving him hands on
experience in the construction field. He then headed to Boston and attended MIT,
graduating with a degree in civil engineering.

“What man in his right

said Harry.
The Luther Burbank Center was originally designed as the Argue Church. After the
church congregation dissolved, a group of local people purchased the property and
the Rotarian's agreed to manage the property as a performance center. The Rotarian's
brought in Harry to be the architect. It was there that Harry met Raymond Burr of
Perry Mason fame who had recently purchased land in the county. The center never
got off the ground because of a lack of funding but Harry and Burr hit it off.
Harry became Raymond Burr's personal architect at his vineyard home in the Dry
Creek area of Sonoma County. It was here that Burr gathered his substantial orchid
collection with his partner of 33 years, Robert Benevides. Due to Burr's heavy
schedule, Harry was often called and asked by Burr to go over plans at the last
minute. Burr was always a good client and Harry usually tried to oblige his famous
friend. Harry and Burr remained friends until Burr's death in 1993.
Harry was the set designer and together they co-produced Thornton Wilder's, “Our
Town” that starred John Carradine at the Luther Burbank Center, now known as
the Wells Fargo Center for you young people in the audience. It became quite the
challenge when Carradine showed up drunk and on pain killers and unable to recite
his lines. But that episode did not displace their love of the theater.
Linda and Harry both went back to school in the late '90s at SSU. Linda graduated
cum laude and “with distinction” with a BA in art history and with a BA in history.
She is now working on a MA degree which she hopes to finish in 2013. Harry received
an MA in Anthropology and Languages from SSU at the same time and they “walked
together” to receive their diplomas.
Harry Master's thesis resulted in a book on the Tlingit indigenous people of Wrangell,
Alaska. Wrangell's first non-native settlers were the Russians who set up a fur-trading
settlement in 1811. A copy of “American Ethos in 19th Century Alaska – the Letters of
Rev. Clarence Thwing, MD.” resides in the Smithsonian.
He also wrote a delightfully witty memoir of his coming of age in America where he
tells stories of his various brushes with fame. “Nikita Khrushchev Waved To Me” is
an account of the many people whom he met and had influenced his life. He tells the
tales of meeting Ken “the Snake” Stabler at a bar in Marin, walking next to the car of
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip in a traffic jam in England, and the day in 1959 that
Nikita Khrushchev waved to him in Des Moines, Iowa. He writes of his encounters with
Maya Angelou, F.L. Wright, Bobby Kennedy and the Vice President of Albania.
Linda is also an incredible artist. Her oil portraits fill
their home with bold, vivid colors. Her work reminds
me of the fauvists, Henri Mattise, Andre Derain and
even Paul Gauguin. “Painting is a passion which I

Harry and Linda live in a home in Penngrove that Harry built and designed. It is
surrounded by a wonderful decorative garden with flowers and plants that make you
feel like you are walking through a work of art or the Garden of Eden. They both believe
that gardening and working in the soil is good for the soul. In a small building on the
property they have a small theatre that they use for rehearsals and reading of plays.
It is heartwarming to see so much talent, drive, enthusiasm and love in one couple.
Linda says, “Some things I believe...Family, friends and other such human-being types
are what matters; all else is good on top of best. Live til you tilt!” and “We only go
around once – maybe.” Harry and Linda are a pair of aces in a full house.

Choosing Your Path
As mentioned earlier, exercise options have never been more
varied or customized. This leaves many older fitness consumers, whether coming to fitness for age-related health reasons, or
returning after a hiatus, wondering where to begin.
Most gyms, fitness centers or studios have complimentary
introductory sessions. Many have individual assessments for new
members, and all have an individualized approach.
Yalda Teranchi of Club One declares, “Our mission is: we change
people’s lives one day at a time.” They offer a senior discount for
those over 65. The first 30 days of your membership includes a
fitness evaluation to assess general health, nutrition, body mass
index (BMI), weight, and fitness goals. New members get an hour
with a personal trainer to develop a customized training regimen.
After that, the trainer watches for the new member on the floor
and offers advice and correction as needed. New members can
achieve their goals through personalized training or with classes
in spin cycle, zumba, Pilates, aqua aerobics, yoga and bootcamp.
Members enjoy a variety of amenities such as well-appointed
locker rooms with sauna, club-supplied soap and shampoo, and
clean towels. An airy common area with cafe creates a social
environment. And the recreational pool, lap pool, hot tub and
fire pits grace the outdoor space. And, if grandma and grandpa
want to bring the grandkids, there is a childcare center and a
3-story waterslide in the recreational pool. The Club keeps members
motivated with point system based on attendance. Points can be used
for massages and guest passes. Deluxe amenities combined with
well-lighted, safe parking make this a club for the fitness connoisseur.

At Petaluma Valley Athletic Club, seniors are also given a discount.
Their mission is to provide a place where all members of the family can enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle. New members have a
fitness evaluation and goals are discussed. They can choose from
personal training sessions, strength training and numerous fitness
classes. Club General Manager, Robin Freitas, has been with PVAC
for 10 years and she knows every member. Often, staff will pair a
new member with a peer at PVAC. The small, boutique club offers
locker rooms filled with amenities, a pool, spa, steam and sauna
rooms. They also have a very full social calendar dotted with picnics and socials for families and individuals. To top it all off, PVAC
has a community lounge offering adult beverages, and a pro shop.

either in or a short drive from
Penngrove. They are the
antidote for the malady of fast
food chains that inundate the
landscape and are kind to both
the palate and the pocketbook.
There are few places on earth where you can buy a heifer
and a Chicago hot dog in the same breath. Luckily for us
we can find one at Roy's Chicago Dogs in the Petaluma
Auction Yard on Corona Road. Hidden among the cattle
trailers and pick up trucks is a definitive hole in the wall.
Six tables and a twelve-seat counter are surrounded by
a décor of faded blues album covers, a map of Chicago
where people place pins of their former home towns near
the city Carl Sandburg called the “city of big shoulders
and hog butcher for the world” and a menu written on
the walls. The Chicago blues of Muddy Waters, Howlin'
Wolf, Little Walter and Buddy Guy plays in the background
adding a sweet home Chicago authenticity to the joint.
The south has

Wisconsin has its
Brats, but only
Chicago has the
glorious gastronomic
entities
Bob & Jackie Jenkins of Rohnert Park enjoying pastrami sandwiches
known as the
“Chicago Dog” and the “Italian Beef” sandwich. That has
all changed since Chris Caudill, his wife Sara and Sara's
mother, Ginny Schropp, bought Roy's Chicago Dogs @
The Yard in October of 2011. Chris and Sara had previously owned Quigley's in Sebastopol until the rent was
raised so high that it made it difficult to make a living. When Roy's became available they jumped at the
chance to purchase the small diner at the Auction Yard
when it was put up for sale by the previous owners.
Roy's is the anti-franchise. It is totally run by family and
friends. Chris mans the steamer and makes the sandwiches. Chris and Sara's ten
year old son, Jake, helps out
on weekends. Ginny waits
tables and handles the bookkeeping and picks up Jake
every day from Penngrove
School. Another employee,
Will Curtis, was taken under
Chris's wing when Will's
father died and he told me,
“Chris is like my big brother.
He turned me into the man Owners Ginny Schropp & Chris Caudill
I am today”. High praise and testimony indeed. Ginny,
with red hair and a warm smile, previously owned a video
production company and has been a longtime mentor
to kids in Petaluma. Dee Halawa and Janel Vossler are
long-term employees and have become part of the family.
Chris, the Wolfgang Puck of Chicago Dogs, is proud of
the fact that his place is a throw-back. He is a veteran
of the restaurant business having worked at the Robles
Lodge, Chevy's, Cafe Portofino and the Sonoma Mission
Inn until they took over Quigley's. He likes the diner
atmosphere of Roy's and the regular mix of customers;
the ranchers, young people, old people and frequent
Chicagoans that make up the tableau of this hole in
the wall. Longtime customers from Rohnert Park, Bob
and Jackie Jenkins have been coming for the pastrami
since Roy's opened and attest to the “excellent” pastrami
sandwiches. “The best pastrami I ever had” says Bob.

SPRING 2013
I grew up on “da sout” side of Chicago with an abiding love
of the Chicago hot dog and Italian beef sandwiches and
going to Roy's is soul food heaven. The only true Chicago
Dog consists of a steamed Vienna all-beef kosher wiener
in a poppy seed bun, diced onion, neon green relish, sports
peppers, two slices of tomato, a slice of dill pickle and a
sprinkle of celery salt. Chicagoans refer to it being “dragged
through the garden”. Oh, and mustard. Only yellow mustard.
You can be arrested in Cook County for putting ketchup
on a dog and most ethical providers will not put ketchup
on your bun. Roy's imports all its product directly from Chicago and you will never find a more
authentic Chicago dog this side of State Street.
The origins of the Chicago dog is often attributed to Fluky's
in 1929 on famed Maxwell Street. The first Vienna beef
frankfurters were served by Jewish immigrants at the 1893
World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Chicagoans may
not have invented the hot dog (that is most often attributed to Charles Feltman who began selling sausages on
Coney Island in
1870), but they
surely perfected the genre.
The
Chicago
area has more
hot dog establishments than
the big three
of McDonald's,
Burger
King
and
Wendy's
combined.
Roy's at The Yard
Roy's also serves an authentic Italian beef sandwich that
would make Al Capone put down his Tommy Gun and
join the choir. The origin of the sandwich is not clear
but often attributed to the workers of the Union Stock
Yards in the 20's and 30's where immigrant workers
would take tough cuts of beef, roast it and then simmer it in it's own juices and then would put the meat on
a roll and then top it with the juice that the meat was
cooked in and take it for lunch in the cold, bloody confines of the stockyards. It was a popular item at weddings
because you could inexpensively feed a lot of people at a
time when the country was reeling from the Depression.
The beef is sliced paper thin and placed on an Italian
style roll. Then a decision must be made: to have it “wet”,
“dipped” or “double dipped”. “Wet” is served by taking a
large portion of beef from the pot and splashing it on the
roll making it slightly damp. Take it a step further and get
it “dipped” where the entire sandwich is dipped au jus. And
as any old-time Chicago politician would suggest, you could
“double dip” it, submerging it twice in the juice resulting in
a sublime soggy sandwich that is best eaten in the “Chicago
Stance.” This is the proper approach where you stand at
the counter place your feet comfortably apart and two
feet away from the counter. Then place your elbows on the
counter and have at your beef sandwich comfortable in the
knowledge that any juices will drip on your plate and not on
your shirt or blouse. This is usually topped with my favorite,
SPRING 2013
17
sauteed sweet green or
red peppers or Chicagostyle giardiniera, a pickled condiment usually
consisting of onions,
carrots, cauliflower, hot
peppers, dried, crushed
red peppers and celery
marinated in olive oil.
Roy's puts out a great
pastrami
sandwich
with a half pound of
pastrami that is also
shipped directly from
Authentic Chicago-style food
Chicago and served on
Rosen's rye bread (the same bread served at Fluky's in
Chicago) with a brown mustard. And as the late, great
Alan Sherman sang, “Do not make a stingy sandwich,
pile the the cold cuts high, customers should see pastrami comin' through the rye”. Roy's does not disappoint.
Chris also has a hot dog stand that will be at the annual
Lagunitas Beer Circus August 20th and 21st. So the next time
you are looking for a real luncheon treat, head over to Roy's
and if you go there on a Monday you can pick up a hearty
sandwich and a heifer to boot. Don't forget to bring your pick
up truck because it's awfully hard to fit a heifer in a Honda.

History of Penngrove
“In THEIR Own Words”
Railroad MEMORIES
in penngrove
Longtime resident Jan Maass Shaw and her sister Donna Cincera share some
of their family history which goes back more than 150 years in Penngrove.
They grew up on the same piece of land on Petaluma Hill Road above Adobe
Road that the Maass family has owned for generations. Here they recall a
few memories of Penngrove past when the railroad was last in action.
Donna: If you wanted to get on the train, the depot to check in
was right behind the Grissom's grocery store, where the restaurant (Superburger) is now.
Jan: And they would load everything up there behind the warehouse where the storage units are, that was where the train
stopped. I don't know when great-grandpa was sending eggs
down to San Francisco, if that was by train. It was before my
time.
Donna: They hauled them to Petaluma, and then put them on a
boat I think they went down that way.
Jan: And Grandpa used to send grain to G. P. McNear, right
down there on the Petaluma pier.
Donna: Those trains were long. I used to go up there and
count them and sixty was a small train. There was a few
times when there was over a hundred cars. If you want-
ed to cross the track, you had to wait a long time. And
especially because the train stopped right here at Penngrove,
you were going to be there for a while. Sometimes it
literally stopped to load or unload.
Jan: There are two intersections in Penngrove, and both
would be closed. I remember when somebody got hit by
the train right in Penngrove. When it had to stop, both
intersections were closed; as the crow flies, walking up
the tracks from Penngrove to Adobe Road was nothing.

Donna: In those days the trains used coal, so we could see them
coming from a long way off. One of my biggest thrills was, to run
to the top of the hill and wave to the engineers and they would see
me and wave back or toot. We didn't have a TV or anything like
that to do in those days, so that was the thrill, running up the hill
and waiting for the engineer. So I'm looking forward to the trains
coming back.

Mother Knows Best
People say “I love you,”
But what is love?
Is it the white feathers,
On an evening dove?
Is it the way the sun shines,
Every moment so bright,
Or maybe its the way a person’s eyes sparkle,
When you whisper, “Goodnight?”
Is it the morning dew, On the grassy hill sides,
Is it the flow of water, In the late evening tide?
The dictionary says, Love is a deep affection,
What they don’t explain,
Is how to create such a strong connection?
I don’t know much about love, But what I do,
Is that no words can describe it more than,
I feel it for you.
It may not be the sun, the water or the due,
It may just be that love is everything you do.
It is the way your face lifts,
When you grace us with your smile,
The way you dance around,
Reminds us of your quirky style.
It is the way you care for us, In so many ways,
And the way you do this,
Every moment, of every day
Its the way you enjoy every moment,
That inspires us to live, and as we do so,
To you we share all the love we can give.

~ Food/Cooking Tips ~
Sugar: A sack of lumpy sugar won't be if you place
it in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
Tortillas: Tough and chewy tortillas? Try
spraying tortillas with water (or running them quickly
under the faucet), then sautéing them briefly in a
lightly greased skillet over medium high heat.
Wine: Don't throw out all that leftover wine. Freeze
into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.
Curry Powder: When you use commercial curry
powder, combine two or more brands - each has a
different mix of spices.
