2010 Summer Reading Program - the Public Libraries of Saginaw
Public Libraries of Saginaw Board of Directors Tina Gutierrez President Neville Britto Vice President Pamela Clark Treasurer Ralph Martin Secretary Joan Brownell Trustee Ann Schneider Branch Trustee Carol Selby Trustee Library Director Trish Burns Always Moving Forward Looking back at another year of service to the Public Libraries of Saginaw, I cannot help but be proud of the continued growth I have witnessed. Even in the midst of tough economic times, our library staff continues to create and adopt innovative practices and technologies in library service. This year, we’ve added downloadable audio books to our repertoire. There is no need to walk into the library to “take out” one of these books, just browse and check one out through your online library account. There are offerings for all ages. The Saginaw community has continued to show strong support for our libraries from the use of our daily services, to steadily growing attendance at of many of our community presentations. Additionally, thank you for your generous donations and for the confidence you extend to us as we continue to seek out new and better ways to serve you. Tina Gutierrez Library Board President Our Mission: Educate, Enrich, Entertain, Encourage Reading and Lifelong Learning A Positive Place to Be Trish Burns Library Director As the director of the Public Libraries of Saginaw, I am pleased to present this annual report of the library system. The challenges of the economy are reflected in the challenges of the library – less resources but more demand. We are proactively planning programming that reflects the needs of our community and expanding our technologies to meet current, and future needs of a changing population. You’ll notice that the focus of the report is on people – although times are tough, people are still our business and we strive to be the honest answer that people can trust every day. The Public Libraries of Saginaw – we’re all about you. 2010 Summer Reading Program Saginaw made a big “SPLASH” with books during our annual Summer Reading Program. Nearly 10,000 children, teens and adults registered for the program, and 6,100 completed the requirements to receive their t-shirt and have their name in a special drawing to visit and meet the DJs from WIOG. Ming the Magnificent entertains From Scheer Genius, to Ming the Magnificent, to Rick Kelley’s children at Claytor Library. Reading is FUN Beach Party, we celebrated reading with over 3,300 of you attending 71 programs at our five library locations. Our sincere thanks to all the families, child care providers, teachers and youth agencies who participated. Your enthusiasm in sharing the joy of reading made a world of difference. Special Thanks to the 2010 Summer Reading Program Sponsors: 102.5 WIOG Charter Media Friends of the Public Libraries of Saginaw NBC25 and The CW46 Mid-Michigan Rick Kelley’s Reading is FUN Beach Party was celebrated by many at Wickes Library. Summer Reading Program finishers from Arthur Eddy Academy, one of our many outreach participating program sites. 120 Years of Information for the People Where can you go to find the original 26 volumes of investigative hearings into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the events of Congress from its first session to the present day, wonderful photos documenting the history of the United States space program and much more? The Hoyt Library! Hoyt has been a Federal Depository Library from the time it opened in 1890. In commemoration of 120 years as a Federal Depository Library, a special celebration was held on August 12, 2010 at Hoyt Library. Present at the celebration was a representative from the Government Printing Office in Washington D.C., Michigan Representative Dale Kildee, Saginaw Mayor Greg Branch, and other prominent officials. Mr. Kildee presented the library with a copy of our achievement as listed in the Congressional Record of the 111th Congress on July 30, 2010. Mayor Branch read a proclamation by the City Council of Saginaw declaring Aug. 12, 2010 Federal Depository Library Program Day. Also received was a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition to mark this important date, and a Tribute from the 95th Legislature. Hoyt Library is proud to continue the tradition of the Federal Depository Program, which was established by Congress in 1813 to safeguard the public’s right to know by collecting, preserving and organizing government information and providing free access to it for all our citizens. One Book, One Community By Amy Churchill, Head of Zauel Library The goal of One Book, One Community is for the Public Libraries of Saginaw to select and promote one inspirational book for an entire year. We enthusiastically encourage our community to read and discuss this book by hosting book talks and providing free copies of the selection to numerous groups. Our grand finale is always a visit by the author of the book that we selected. We actively seek out titles with broad appeal that will foster intergenerational reading and discussion. The 2010 selection was Beautiful Boy by David Sheff. Beautiful Boy is the story of David’s son Nic’s struggle with drug addiction and how it impacted David and their family. It is a brutally honest portrayal of both the highs and lows they both went through. Normally, the library brings in only one author, but this year we had the opportunity to bring in David and his son Nic. Over 300 people gathered to hear David and Nic Sheff speak about their experiences with Nic’s drug addiction. Attendees also had the opportunity to speak to David and Nic personally during the book signing session. The response to this event was overwhelmingly positive. One Book 2010 touched the fabric of our community and linked individuals, families, and support groups with two excellent authors. Jazz on Jefferson By Kimberly White, Head of Hoyt Library Each year, the Hoyt Library participates in the Jazz on Jefferson street festival. Each year the Sasse Band sets up on the Jefferson Avenue porch and plays for passersby, but this year we offered some additional entertainment in the form of a hospitality tent featuring a variety of refreshments for event-goers of all ages. The Friends of the Library sponsored live music in the tent by Matt Corrigan and his orchestra. Proceeds from refreshment sales went to the Saginaw Public Libraries Foundation. Hundreds of people visited, and we look forward to continuing our participation in this outstanding community event for years to come. Reaching out to our Community… By Deborah Sanchez, Community Relations Coordinator This year the Public Libraries of Saginaw reached out well beyond the walls of its five branches, making our presence in the community known through participation in a variety of cultural events, festivals and neighborhood activities, as well as visiting the offices of governments, corporations and other organizations. Through these events, staff and volunteers have been able to answer questions, introduce new technology, promote monthly programming for people of all ages in our community, and share information through fun, creative, and informational displays promoting library resources. Community Resource Series By Kimberly White, Head of Hoyt Library This experimental program turned out to be a great success for the Public Libraries of Saginaw. Each month from October through May, the library partnered with a different community group to provide resources to the people of Saginaw. We were able to build a strong partnership with Legal Services of Eastern Michigan and The Saginaw County Bar Association and offer free legal seminars on a variety of topics. We also partnered with the Michigan Credit Union League on programs to help people with their finances, the Saginaw Economic Development Corporation to learn about how to get a small business loan, and with the Michigan State University Extension Office Master Gardeners to share gardening tips. We look forward to continuing to partner with these and other organizations as we introduce our patrons to the resources available right here in Saginaw. Addressing the Community’s Needs by Digging into the Past By John Sheridan, Head of Local History and Genealogy One of the fastest growing hobbies in America today is genealogy, and the Public Libraries of Saginaw has the resources to meet that need. With over 200 family histories, the obituary database, the New England Genealogy book collection and individual county birth, marriage and death records as well as databases that target genealogical research, we have had visitors from all over the U.S. and Canada. Over 200 obituary and informational requests a month are filled by LHG staff. Our archives contain unique photos, histories, and original source materials of individuals and businesses in the City of Saginaw and Saginaw County that researchers find most useful. Items from our archives have been used in displays in the library and in the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History. Genealogy programs this past year have included “Your Family and Mine”, a joint Michigan Humanities grant program in conjunction with the Castle Museum, to engage the residents in our community in genealogical research as a family hobby, and the “Genealogy Resources from Federal Documents” program, which introduces patrons to the electronic resources available online from the Government Printing Office. 235 Years of Service Two hundred and thirty-five years of service walked out the doors of the Public Libraries of Saginaw over the summer. Eight long-time employees from the Hoyt and Butman-Fish branches retired. The wealth of talent and experience the employees gave to the library system is immeasurable and they will be deeply missed. Each individual contributed something unique to the library system. Hoyt Library retirees.
