ABOUT PRICKLE PRESS
Prickle Press is a design and letterpress
studio based in Brixton, London and
founded by Rachel Stanners. Rachel
trained and worked as a designer for dance
and theatre while pursuing a hobby in
letterpress. After successfully designing
and selling her first collection of letterpress
greetings cards to a small bookshop in
Copenhagen, Rachel decided to establish
Prickle Press as a limited company in 2010.
Since then Rachel has developed a thriving
bespoke design and letterpress business
for clients including Manolo Blahnik and
Vogue. She has also sold her previous
greetings card collections to small and large
UK retailers including Tate Britain and
Anthropologie EU.
NEW COLLECTION
This year Rachel has drawn from a long period of research and development and will be
launching a brand new and expanding range of stationery including, greetings cards,
notebooks and gift wrap. In addition, Rachel has worked in collaboration with illustrator
Katharine Cooke to create a new collection of children’s stationery called Little Prickle,
which currently includes birthday cards, party invitations and thank you cards. All of the
stationery in this catalogue is brand new and hasn’t been seen or sold before at retailers in
the UK or abroad.

DESIGN & LETTERPRESS
Rachel’s aim is to create beautiful, lively
and tactile stationery that inspires and
encourages the age-old traditions of putting
pen to paper, sending letters, writing in
journals, and gift giving.
All of Prickle Press’ designs are created by
Rachel and begin as pen, ink or watercolour
sketches. Rachel enjoys creating abstract,
colourful shapes, designs and compositions.
The designs are either digitally reproduced
or turned into polymer plates for
letterpressing.
Letterpress dates back to the fifteenth century. It is an old, tactile craft that requires time,
focus and skill to design and typeset faultlessly, master the machinery and produce a
perfect print. Each piece of card is fed through the press, piled, cut and enveloped by hand.
The result is something you will instantly want to stroke, collect, frame or gift away.
Letterpress is a craft and therefore each print, the impression, ink colour and coverage
can vary so that each one is unique. Any slight imperfections are part of the charm of the
letterpress process.

These wash cards started as watercolour experiments and have been developed into
a bright and emotive range of greetings cards. Rachel has matched the mood of the
watercolours to the message on the card to create a meaningful and moving card. The
watercolour washes have been scanned and digitally printed and the lettering has been
letterpressed.

Both the notebooks and gift wrap designs began as
watercolour illustrations before being scanned and digtally
printed. The notebook designs cover the front and back
of the notebooks, are glue-bound and come with 70 blank
pages inside. A watercolour and letterpress bookmark
comes inside each notebook as a little extra gift.

ABOUT
K AT H A R I N E + R A C H E L
Prickle Press is excited to be launching a new collection of
children’s stationery called ‘Little Prickle’; a collaboration
between Rachel Stanners, designer and letterpress
printer, and illustrator Katharine Cooke. Rachel and
Katharine are cousins who spent their childhood summer
holidays dreaming up projects together and letting their
imaginations run free. They both now enjoy juggling their
respective creative careers and raising their own young
families. Since becoming mothers they have been inspired
to pool their talents and create a stationery for children
that captures the spirit of fun and creativity they remember
from their own childhoods. They see immense potential
in the Little Prickle collection and have lots of ideas in
development for how to expand the collection to encompass
a variety of products, age groups and events.
PROCESS
The collaboration between Katharine and Rachel began about a year ago. Since then
they have worked closely together to come up with the ideas, ethos and direction of Little
Prickle. Together they have developed Katharine’s illustrations into a collection part of
which has then been letterpressed by Rachel.

These six birthday cards were created in collaboration with
Katharine Cooke who provided the illustrations. Each card
has been fed through the press, piled and packaged by
hand. In between every colour the press is cleaned and reset before starting the next colour. The effect can be clearly
seen in the finished product with the deep impressions and
uneven ink coverage adding to the finish and character of
these little cards.
