If you want happiness for a lifetime, Help someone in need” I have witnessed my mother following what she said, and surrounded by the happiness. I also witnessed my father and elder brother working hard and leading a selfless life and happy with what they had. With that Inspiration from my family, I always dreamed about doing something to the needy children when I grow as an adult. I turned my childhood dream into reality when I was 29 years old by starting “Bighelp For Education” in the year 2002 with the help of my friends. In August 2002 I visited India and visited several public schools, talked to many teachers and children to understand their needs and issues. That visit had really helped me deep dive into the public education system in India, and recognize the challenges and struggles with many issues related to enrolment, retention and quality of education in public schools. So I decided to make Bighelp organization as catalyst to address these issues and introduced the programs ‘Sponsor A Child’, Adopt A School and Merit awards. Sponsor a Child program helps to address the issues related to enrolment and retention. Adopt a school and Merit awards programs help to address the issues related to quality of education in public schools. In August 2002, during my visit to India, I formed the first volunteer team in Nagarjuna Sagar, comprising of teachers philanthropists to run the local project for Bighelp. Initially 20 students have been sponsored, 2 schools were adopted and 2 merit awards were setup under the first project. An office was setup in Hyderabad to manage projects and expand Bighelp activities. Mrs. Sarojini Maturi & Mr. Jawahar Rambarki have joined their hands as volunteers in India and took up the roles as Executive Director and Assistant executive director for Projects, respectively. In 2004, Mr. Seshagiri Rao, A retired engineer, has joined as a volunteer in India and assumed the role of Assistant Executive Director for Administration. I am proud to say these 3 individuals continue to serve Bighelp organization till today as volunteers and continue to contribute endless hours of time and energy. My friends and family supported me at every stage of Bighelp. Without support from my all of my friends and my wife Hameeda, I could have not done anything. My kids are obsessed with Bighelp and always look for opportunities to participate in Bighelp’s activities. My friends and volunteers are the heart of Bighelp. They stand with me to run this organization and reach many underprivileged children in need. -Chand Pasha Shaik, Founder, Bighelp For Education Program List Continued… Sr# 24 Item Name/Type/Lead Description Kautvam - Classical Dance - Vasanthi Mannava Bharatanatyam classical Kautvam item on Mahishasura Mardini choreographed by world renowned classical dancer Rama Vaidyanathan 25 Creative performance from movie songs from India - Film Dance - Anuradha Rajagopal 26 27 28 29 Bollywood/Tollywood Mix - Film Dance - Sahiti,Basani Bhangra Medley -Bollywood dance - Madhavi Suddala Grafton Rocking stars dancing for Hit Film song from Indian language with creative props and ideas. Merit Awards Sponsor A Child The objective of ‘Sponsor A child’ program is to fund and sponsor the education of children in India who are at risk of discontinuing their studies due to very impoverished circumstances. The goal of this program is to prevent the dropouts by orphans or financially backward children. Through this program, a donor can sponsor the education of an underprivileged child for the period of one year. Donor will be provided with the details of their sponsoring children through our website. Donor can communicate with their sponsoring children through mails or personally meet them by visiting the project site on project monthly meeting day. It takes $11 per month to sponsor the education of a needy child. Adopt A School The objective of ‘Adopt A School’ program is to strengthen Government schools that are providing formal education in rural areas in India. The goal of this program is to make Government schools an interesting place to learn, increase the student enrolment & retention rate, incorporate good teaching and learning techniques in government schools and ensure that the education that the children receive is effective. Usually most of the students studying in Government schools come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Donors can visit these schools for monitoring the progress of their project. Merit Awards The objective of ‘Merit Awards program’ is to create a competitive spirit among students studying in different schools located in certain selected region. The Donor can establish the funds on their name or their loved ones (Mother, father or anyone), distribute the interest of the funds for giving the scholarships or awards or sponsoring the education of the children. The principle amount will be deposited into Bighelp’s account, then the bank interest will be paid as award every year for the award winner. Award is defined based on certain criteria and interests of the donor. Usually the criterion is the marks received by the students in 10th standard or 7th standard. The award criteria can be different for each award. The award criteria is pre-defined and announced in all schools in a selected region. Having recognized the problems associated with literacy in India, Bighelp strive to be a catalyst for spreading the awareness of literacy and achieve 100% literacy in India by directly funding and sponsoring education for children. Bighelp believes that children's education is one of the most effective development investments that a country can make. We constantly expect to make people appreciate the gravity of the need and try to send a wake up call to many Indians to do something to their motherland. By mobilizing the funds Bighelp is helping underprivileged children in India to step in the march towards change, self-reliance by providing basic and formal education, there by raise economic productivity of the country, improve the educational prospects of the next generation, promote sound management of environmental resources and reduce poverty. In spite of remarkable expansion of the elementary education in the last few decades in India, a large number of children continue to be out of school. According to the latest survey by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in June 2008, the literacy rate among the population with age 7 and above was 72%. In spite of all the recent development in India, unfortunately India still currently has the largest illiterate population of any nation on earth. The children in remote villages of India continue to suffer from the lack of access to good education and especially girl children are being discouraged to go to school. At Bighelp we try to go to the root of their problem and trying to solve the situation by sponsoring the education these children and hope to see a better world. 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 Children Schools 20 2 45 6 80 8 120 11 160 14 200 16 255 17 300 19 343 23 369 50 476 100 Merit Awards 2 3 3 4 4 4 5 17 23 26 29 “God sends children to enlarge our hearts, and make us unselfish and full of kindly sympathies and affections. “ -- Mary Howitt Celebrating 10 years of service to the needy children “Children keep us in check.
