Francis J. McBride Principal 2016-2017 SCHOOL LUNCH PRICES The Federal Healthy and Hungry Kids Free Act requires local school districts to set lunch prices based on a Federal formula. To comply with the law, we are forced to increase our school lunch prices next year. The School Board and School District recognize that this price increase impacts families. If the School District does not increase lunch prices, we would be out-of-compliance with Federal regulations and could jeopardize food service funding. The School Board has approved the following pricing for lunches for next school year. $2.45 Maple Avenue & Bartlett Elementary Schools $2.70 Mountain View Middle School $2.95 Goffstown High School This price will continue to include an entrée, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain rich breads and milk. I am available to speak with and assist any family that may be interested in submitting an application for free or reduced meal pricing. Please feel free to visit the website at http://goffstown.k12.nh.us under the Resources area to learn more, or feel free to contact me directly at 660-5311 or [email protected] This process is confidential and no personal or financial information is shared with the school or staff other than myself. We look forward to continuing to serve your children. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Rocco Caradonna’s metal sculpture, “CONTEMPLATION” won top honors giving first place to Goffstown High School. The sculpture was on display in NHIA’s French Building Gallery located at 148 Concord Street, Manchester for the month of March. The piece is a welded, recycled metal sculpture. If you purchased any of these Star Wars themed cups at WalMart since November 2015, then you have bought an item designed by GHS class of ‘89 alumni Bill Kerner. Bill is the senior designer at American Greetings in Ohio where he works on special projects for themed product lines such as the Star Wars cups and Godzilla holiday ornaments. Do you know an alumni or staff member with an achievement, feat or accomplishment that is newsworthy, or that would be great to share with the GHS community? If so, send the information along to Lynn Cavagnaro, Principal’s Administrative Assistant, at: [email protected]. Be sure to include the year of graduation. Share your achievements with others. Brag a little. The recognition and support of those around you is nurturing.” ~Rosemarie Rossetti~ SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION Scholarships: Each year the greater GHS community recognizes and celebrates our seniors by awarding them scholarships at our annual Scholarship Night. This year we will be recognizing members of the Class of 2016 on June 9th at 7 pm in the Hieber Auditorium. Over 50 scholarships will be awarded through the generosity of local families, organizations and businesses. On behalf of our students, we would like to express our gratitude at being part of such a generous community. Please join us on June 9th as we recognize the college bound members of the Class of 2016. CREDIT RECOVERY SCHEDULING UPDATE The master schedule for 2016-17 is being created. We anticipate distributing schedules to juniors, sophomores and freshmen prior to exam week. Student can meet with their counselor between June 13th and the close of the academic year in order to make any necessary schedule changes. Counselors will be in their offices through June 21st and are expected to return from summer break on August 26th. The school counseling office will be open on a reduced schedule with limited staff throughout the summer. Schedule changes will be made in situations where students received a course they have already taken, failed to receive a requested course that is required for graduation, etc. Students should request schedule changes from their counselor prior to June 21st or after August 26th to ensure that changes in the students schedule do not impact progress toward graduation or specific pre-requisites that are part of the student’s individual 4-year plan. Schedules will be distributed to current 8th graders during the week of June 13th. Credit Recovery: Students who have failed classes (or who are in danger of doing so) should see their counselors NOW in order to explore the options available over the summer. In our experience, the sooner a student is able to make up required credit, the greater the chance for success the following year. If students don’t address credit recovery needs as they occur, they often become discouraged and fall farther behind. Courses will be offered at the high school this summer through the Goffstown Adult Program (GAP). Classes will be offered Monday-Thursday beginning July 5th. Sessions are from 8:30-10:00 or 10:15-11:45. Registration forms can be found on page 11 of the GRIZZ and are available in both the School Counseling Office and the Main Office. Classes are approved to run based on registration numbers, so consider signing up early. We hope that our students, whether they have spent the entire school year or just a semester in the art program, will have gained a new way to look at creativity and innovation and see that creative problem solving skills can have a positive effect on all career choices and life in general. For students just completing their first high school level art course, continuing to experience creativity and artistic exploration as they make their elective choices will add to their understanding of art’s role in society and why it is so important to civilized cultures throughout history. Research shows that the arts are a critical link in student success. Arts education is linked to higher test scores across all subjects and to lower dropout rates. Arts education fosters creativity, innovation and collaboration; hallmarks of careers in the 21st century. ART CLUB Join a fun, social and active club in the 2016-17 school year! Art Club Meets Tuesdays from 2:45-4:30PM in A-01 First fall meeting September 20th Arts education helps prepare our students for the expectations of the twenty-first century workforce, including the ability to innovate, communicate and collaborate. Students who will take their first art classes in the fall can look forward to diverse thinking opportunities and learning that there can be multiple solutions to the same problem. Originality and risk-taking are encouraged and celebrated in art. Senior Joseph Murphy with his still-life pencil drawing, which was one of the artworks selected by the art educators to represent GHS at the regional art exhibition in Concord. This exhibition is held annually in March to celebrate National Youth Art Month. Some of our students currently have work in the annual Congressional Art Competition and Exhibition. On Tuesday, May 3rd the awards reception was held by Congressman Guinta at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester. The students with work in the show are seniors: Sydney Brey and Kelli Towsley; juniors: Morgan Chase, Karissa Cloutier, Anna Duval, Samantha Kimball and Allison Lavallee. The senior Art Honors students Sydney Brey, Jaina Neri, and Kelli Towsley have worked extremely hard for the past year under the direction of their individual mentor designing, planning and creating artwork in a variety of 2 and 3-D mediums. Their work spans a wide breadth of genre and styles. The three Art Honors students will hold their year end culminating exhibition on Tuesday, May 17th from 3:30pm-5pm in the GHS Arts Lobby. This event is open to the public. Come celebrate their successful year of work while viewing their artwork and enjoying some light refreshments. We look forward to meeting all of the incoming ninth grade students who will be taking art classes next year. “We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.” ~JK Rowling 12 A R T S & AC T I V I T I E S This exhibition opening reception celebrates a year of highly focused work with a commitment to excellence that is not often seen at the high school level. These three young people will be exhibiting the wide scope and depth of work that they explored and mastered during the past year. It will also show their ability to take responsibility for their own learning and their passion for their work. The artists will be on site during the event to talk about their work and refreshments will be served. VANS CUSTOM CULTURE SHOE DESIGN COMPETITION Four students were recently selected by their teacher, Ava-lyn Lane, to become the first GHS team to enter the 7th annual Vans Custom Culture Shoe Design Competition, a national contest designed to give high school students a platform to embrace creative expression while joining a movement to support arts education. Students were provided with four pairs of blank Vans shoes and were challenged to create designs that represent the four themes of the Vans’ “Off The Wall” lifestyle: action sports, arts, music, and local flavor. Although the team made it into the pool of 3,000 schools selected to participate, they did not make it to the final 50. From this group, a final five are selected via a public vote. The five top teams then travel to Los Angeles in June, where the Vans design team selects the first place school and awards that art department $50,000. The runner-up schools each receive $4,000. Each team receives up to $20,000 to cover the trip and scholarships are also awarded. Some of the shoe designs are selected for production. Since our team made up of seniors: Sydney Brey and Kelli Towsley; and juniors: Anna Duval and Samantha Kimball learned so much from the program process this year, we will definitely be putting a 2017 competition team together! See their amazing two minute video about their shoe designing process on youtube. And yes, that shoe does actually play music! Go to: http://youtu.be/UwRhbukLxtA. There will be challenges and instead of hiding in a shell, you have to go out and meet them.” ~ Ruth Westheimer~ STUDENT COUNCIL Although we are nearing the end of the school year, the GHS Student Council’s incessant work ethic is very much alive, with members continuing to serve their school and community. The Student Council hosted the annual Spring District Meeting on April 6. As a Council, having people with different strengths that can work well together benefits everyone, from the school to the community and, because of this, the theme we chose to focus on was Synergy. By comparing and contrasting competitive games versus cooperative games, we discovered that it can be more fun and helpful to work together as a team. However, in our discussions, we touched upon the need to have an individual mind and perseverance, while being open to compromise. Overall it was an exciting day, and with help from Maddie Carlson, we donated dozens of stuffed animals to help comfort children battling cancer. Also, the junior class has been working hard to plan prom for the last few months. They have been working on designing decorations, invitations, and prom court ballots. Also, they have met with people at the Radisson about the food and setup, spoke with the DJ about song selections and have contacted a photo booth company for their services. They will be selling prom tickets from May 2nd to May 13th. Prom is set for May 21st and the junior council will be setting up that morning. Finally, the Student Council elections for the 2016-2017 school year are approaching. Not only are all those interested filling out applications by May 13th and writing speeches for the elections on May 18th, but upcoming juniors and seniors are working on their speeches for the Executive Board to lead student council next year. Also as the year comes to a close, Student Council will do its annual senior sendoff to thank the graduating seniors, Alexia Gorton, Jose Martinez, Alyson Cote, Samantha Woodward, Sierra Blondeau, Zachary Comeau, Timothy Comeau, Ayla Wamser and David Temeng for their participation in Council at GHS. It has been another successful year for the GHS Student Council, and although we are soon to say goodbye to some fantastic members, we will soon greet new members and welcome them into the Council. As the StuCo Reporters, we have been honored to report for you the happenings of Student Council this year, and we wish you all a great summer vacation! Both baseball teams will play their home games at Lions Club Field on West Union Street in Goffstown. Both softball teams will play their games on campus. The varsity and junior varsity lacrosse teams will play their home games behind GHS on the stadium field. Finally, our tennis teams will play their home matches at Barnard Park. Schedules With the crazy weather we are experiencing once again this spring, you can get updated game schedules by checking the GHS Athletics website (www.goffstown.k12.nh.us) and clicking on the team schedule you would like to view in the season dropdown menu. You can also visit the NHIAA website (www.NHIAA.org). To get up to date scores, alerts on game postponements and cancellations, create a fan account online at (www.goffstownhighschool.bigteams.com). I hope to see you at one of our many spring sporting events. GHS Athletics FAQ Question: I have passing grades and no incompletes in all of my classes for the semester. Will I be eligible to play a sport in the upcoming season? Answer: Any student must have passed at least FIVE credit courses the previous QUARTER. Eligibility is not assessed on semester grades but previous quarter grades. (This is a common mistake made by individuals seeking athletic eligibility.) Furthermore, a student ineligible under Goffstown High School rules, but eligible under the NHIAA guidelines, may apply for a waiver hearing to determine, on a case by case basis, if a student should be granted eligibility. This can only happen once during a student-athlete’s high school career and is subject to approval by the Principal. Parents and Sportsmanship It takes an ongoing effort to make sure that Goffstown Athletic teams demonstrate their best behavior both on and off the field/courts of play. In the process of doing this, it has been apparent to me that sportsmanship doesn’t end on the fields/courts but extends into the stands, which by and large are populated with parents and family members of our student athletes. In an effort to bring more awareness to sportsmanship, I’m asking each parent of an athlete at Goffstown High School to take a minute to view the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZXfxxTLyUE Senior Athletic Banquet and Hall of Fame Dinner: Save the date: Wednesday, May 25st at 6:30pm in the Main Gymnasium. Come celebrate the culmination of our senior athletes fouryear athletic experience, and recognize our newly inducted hall of fame members. The evening includes a meal and awards will be presented. Senior athlete parents can expect to receive their invitations in the mail in the next week or so. If you have any questions please contact Bridget Lambert at 660-5319 or [email protected]. Spring Sports Awards Please inquire with your team’s coach for information on your student athletes team awards ceremony. Welcome 8th Grade Families It is my distinct pleasure to welcome all the new GRIZZLIES to GHS! We are excited to get to know each and every one of our new cubs! Parents and student athletes alike are asked to sign up on the new GHS Athletics website by adding a “FAN ACCOUNT” which will enable you to receive notifications/alerts from the Athletic Department along with any and all teams you desire to receive information from. You can do this by going to http://www.goffstownhighschool.bigteams.com and creating your fan account today! We look forward to working with you. GO GRIZZLIES! Fall Sports In an effort to allow for more effective summer planning, there are several dates that I would like to highlight for all potential all athletes. The first day of football and fall spirit practice will be Wednesday, August 10th, while the first date of practice for the remaining fall sports will be Monday, August 15th. All tryouts will last no less than three days and practice will pick up right after tryouts. We will print the times and sites for the individual sports in the Goffstown News. Information can also be found on the GHS website throughout the summer. If you have not yet done so, please go to the GHS Athletics website and create a fan account and follow the athletic department along with any and all other teams you wish you receive notifications from. Please look for announcements on the GHS Athletics website. Your student athlete will need to have an updated physical on file with the nurse’s or AD’s office. All incoming freshmen and athletes that are new to our school must have proof of an up to date (within 1 year of their sports starting date) physical on file in the nurses or Athletic Directors office, before practice begins. Pleas drop them off at the main office at your earliest convenience throughout the summer. If you have any questions, or would like information, please call the Athletic office at 660-5313. 2016- 2017 SCHOOL CAL E NDAR SAU#19 SCHOOL DISTRICT CALENDAR (180 days) Goffstown School District 2016 - 2017 School Year JULY M T W TH 4 11 18 25 5 12 19 26 6 13 20 27 7 14 21 28 F 1 8 15 22 29 TH 6 13 20 27 F 7 14 21 28 W 4 11 18 25 TH 5 12 19 26 F 6 13 20 27 W 5 12 19 X TH 6 13 20 X F 7 14 21 X OCTOBER (21) M 3 10 17 24 31 T 4 11 18 25 W 5 12 19 26 JANUARY (21) M 2 9 H 23 30 T 3 10 17 24 31 APRIL (15) M 3 10 17 X T 4 11 18 X AUGUST M 1 8 15 22 29 T 2 9 16 23 30 W 3 10 17 24 31 TH 4 11 18 25 F 5 12 19 26 TH 3 10 17 H F 4 H 18 X W 1 8 15 22 TH 2 9 16 23 F 3 10 17 24 W 3 10 17 24 31 TH 4 11 18 25 F 5 12 19 26 NOVEMBER (18) M 7 14 21 28 T 1 X 15 22 29 W 2 9 16 ER 30 FEBRUARY (18) M T 6 13 20 X 7 14 21 X MAY (22) M 1 8 15 22 H T 2 9 16 23 30 SEPTEMBER (18) M T W H 12 19 26 6 TW 20 27 7 14 21 28 DECEMBER (16) TH TW 8 15 22 29 F X 9 16 23 30 F 2 TW 16 ER X M T W 5 12 19 X 6 13 20 X 7 14 21 X TH 1 8 15 22 X W X 8 15 22 29 TH X 9 16 23 30 F X 10 17 24 31 TH 1 8 15 22 29 F 2 9 ER 23 30 MARCH (19) M T 6 13 20 27 7 TW 21 28 JUNE (12) M T W 5 12 19 26 6 13 20 27 7 14 21 28 180 Days for Instruction (Required by RSA 189:1 and Ed 306.18).
