about the her mother’s brave
resistance to the doctors who
wanted to discontinue Terrie’s
life-support after a devastating
accident paralyzed her at the
age of 19. Like Bill and Terrie,
many others have important
stories to tell about having
been pressured to consent to
end their lives on grounds that
they would be too expensive
to maintain, too much of a
burden on their families, too
dependent upon the good will
of others. In short, they were
told that, gravely injured or
sick, their lives were no longer
va l u a b l e e n o u g h t o m e r i t
being lived.
In the coming weeks, it will
be vitally important for every
one of us to listen carefully to
people like Bill and Terrie and
to participate actively in the
growing public resistance to
p hy s i c i a n - a s s i s t e d s u i c i d e .
There is already a physicianassisted suicide bill being
placed on the agenda of the
78th Nevada Legislature.
In Belgium, just last week,
international news sources
covered the decision of an
aged and infirm couple to die
together by physician-assisted
suicide. This couple doubtless
believes that they are
exercising their rights to die
with dignity, but they just do
not care how aggressively and
consistently the die with
dignity slogan is deployed in
modern society precisely in
order ruthlessly to eliminate
the injured, the infirm, the
aged, the senile, the sick and
the depressed among us.
Cui bono? Who benefits from
p hy s i c i a n - a s s i s t e d s u i c i d e ?
P r i m a r i l y, i t i s i n s u r a n c e
companies and already
strained government services
that benefit. Healthy family
members, who are nonetheless
emotionally quite vulnerable,
can be overwhelmed by
threats of economic sanction
and loss of lifestyle into
making irreversible decisions
as surrogates. Even worse, they
can find themselves (consciously or not) giving their
loved ones the impression that
their lives are not worth living.
Who, under such circumstances, wouldn’t start thinking
that suicide could be the right
thing to do?

THE FRIAR’S PANTRY
October is here and the weather is getting colder. The pantry is in need of warm
blankets, sleeping bags, coats/jackets in all sizes to help the homeless and less
fortunate in the community. The pantry is continually in need of nonperishable
food such as: Spam, corned beef, chili, ravioli, Spaghetti-O’s, Sloppy Joe Mix,
Beans & Franks, Hamburger/Tuna Helpers, jelly/jam, boxed, canned and dry
milk and cans of fruit. Please bring in your donations on Sunday to the Sacristy
or any day to the Bookstore. Thank you for your constant generosity.
CENTERING PRAYER WORKSHOP
We would like to invite you to an Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop on Saturday,
October 25th from 9:00-2:00pm at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Carson City.
The centering prayer workshop will teach a method of silent prayer that is rooted in the
Christian contemplative heritage. It is a gentle silent method of consenting to God’s presence and healing action within us. By taking time to “rest in God” each day, we open our
awareness to the gift of God’s presence. Come learn more about this prayer method.
There will be three- 2 hour follow-up sessions thereafter (Oct.27th, Nov. 3rd and Nov. 10th)
The suggested donation $40 includes materials, Fr. Keating’s book “Open Mind Open Heart”,
refreshments during the workshop and registration for the contemplative outreach newsletter. Participants should bring a brown bag lunch. To assist in planning, please pre-register by

Saint Teresa of Jesus
Feast Day – October 15th
Known to her family as Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada, she became the reformer of
Carmel, mother of the Discalced Carmelite nuns and friars, patron of Catholic writers (from 1965) and Doctor of the Church (1970), the first woman with St Catherine
of Siena to ever receive this last title. She was born at Avila in Castile, Spain, on 28th
March 1515 and died in Alba de Tormes, near Salamanca, on 4th October 1582 (a
correction due to the Gregorian reform of the calendar that year, as the following
day was officially 15th October). She was beatified in 1614, & canonized in 1622.
Her life needs to be understood in the light of the plan which God had for her, with the great desires experienced in her heart, with the mysterious illness to which she was subject in her youth
(and with the ill health from which she suffered throughout her life), and with the "resistance" to
divine grace for which she blamed herself more than she should have. Running away from home,
she entered the Carmel of the Incarnation in Avila on 2nd November 1535. As a result, partly of the
prevailing conditions in the community and partly from her own spiritual difficulties, she had to
struggle before arriving at what she called her conversion at the age of 39. But, benefitting from
various spiritual directors, she then began to make great strides towards perfection.
In 1560, the idea first emerged of a new Carmel, where the Rule could be followed more
closely, and this was realized two years later when the monastery of St. Joseph was founded without any endowments and "following the Primitive Rule": a phrase that needs to be clearly understood because both then and later it was a notion which was more nostalgic and "heroic" than
practical. Five years later Teresa obtained from the Prior General of the Order, John Baptist Rossi,
then visiting Spain, permission to increase the number of monasteries and a license to found two
communities of contemplative Carmelite friars (later to be called Discalced) who would be the
spiritual counterparts of the nuns and, as such, able to help them. At the death of St Teresa, there
were 17 monasteries of nuns in the Reform, and the communities of friars also quickly outstripped
the original number, some founded with permission from the Prior General Rossi but others, especially those in Andalusia, established against his will, relying on the approval of the apostolic visitors, the Dominican Vargas and the young Discalced Carmelite Jerome Gracian (a close spiritual
companion of Teresa, for whom she vowed to do whatever he asked her, as long as it was not contrary to God's law).
There followed a series of unedifying quarrels, made worse by the interference of the civil authorities and other outsiders, until in 1581, the Discalced were formed into a separate Province. St
Teresa was then able to write, "Now all of us, Discalced and Calced, are at peace and nothing can
hinder us from serving the Lord".
St Teresa is among the most important figures of all time for Catholic spirituality. Her works, especially the four best known (The Life, The Way of Perfection, The Mansions and The Foundations),
together with her more historical works, contain a doctrine which encompasses the whole of the
spiritual life, from the first steps right up to intimacy with God at the centre of the Interior Castle.
Her Letters show her occupied with a great variety of everyday problems. Her doctrine on the unity
of the soul with God (a doctrine which was intimately lived by her) follows the Carmelite tradition
which had preceded her and to which she herself contributed in such a notable way, enriching it as
well as passing the tradition on, not only to her spiritual sons and daughters, but also to the whole
Church which she served so unsparingly. When she was dying, her one joy was to be able to affirm
that "I die a daughter of the Church".
