Once again Oakhill’s Unabridged Children’s Audio list this quarter features
everything from the strange to the downright funny.
Special places is the theme running through several books. The troubled young
girl in Gwyneth Rees’s Cherry Blossom Dreams discovers the only place she can
find solace is a crumbling mansion, full of its own secrets. In Emma Carroll’s
In Darkling Wood, Alice, staying with her much-disliked grandmother while her
brother has a heart transplant, is only at peace in the nearby wood – and her
grandmother wants to cut it down! In the case of Knitbone Pepper: Ghost Dog by
Claire Barker it’s a ghostly animal who’s in danger of being evicted from his
derelict mansion.
If it’s pirates you’re after then look no further! Lyn Gardner & Ros Asquith’s
seafaring horrors continue to wreak havoc in The Ghastly McNastys: Fright in the
Night. In John Matthews’ rather more sinister Henry Hunter and the Cursed
Pirates a friend’s parents have gone missing and Henry sets off on a quest which
ends with Blackbeard himself.
A small boy with a huge voice hopes to save his classmates from a spell cast
