Youth Committee Report March 2013 Youth Weekend 29 youth, 1 parent and a scurry of boots, hats and mittens arrive at Schneider Mountain for our annual youth weekend. 9 youth were participants throughout the show season and the 20 were children that just wanted to join in on the fun as well as a few who may show in the future. They participated in team building activities as well as games, had an obstacle course and later a trail ride with Mitch Barbour, a bonfire with smores and spider dogs and finished the evening with a movie. The next day we held a mini meeting; discussing what the club was about and the board members gave a showmanship clinic. Equine Review This was quite successful for the youth but when revisiting our means of fund raising, it was a bit too substantial as one ticket sale was the norm per purchaser. Fundraising included: bake sale, tickets on mittens donated by Bernadette Fowler, tickets on fire pit donated by Craig Manufacturing, ceramic mugs, 50/50 draw and Krista and Shelley made hamburg soup and chili to sell at lunch time. Friday evening set up consisted of 3 youth and Saturday/ Sunday there were 8 youth in total to man the youth booth as well as the used tack sale. They were long days for these youth but they held up like troopers. Any extra help for the year to come would be extremely beneficial. June Show Parents and youth were invited to a mini meeting held in the arena on the Saturday night. Approximately 20 youth and 2 parents arrived. The youth that participated in the equine review had won a pizza party and they generously donated it to this meeting. We discussed guidelines to being on the Congress Youth Team as well as the August YTT. We then played minute to win it games with a lot of laughs! 11 | P a g e August Show For the YTT we had 20 youth participating. They made tie die t-shirts instead of banners and were in favor of the change. We added games to the menu as to allow youth that were not showing to be able to earn points for their team. The youth joined in for the OK Corral and music equipment was provided gratis by Gary Jamieson. The closing ceremonies for the YTT were very nice. We would really like to encourage parents, coaches to show their support to the youth by filling the stands. The youth work and play hard for this weekend!!! Congress 2 Maritime youth were joined by 2 members of the Quebec team to go to Congress to represent. MQHYA provided the entry fee, team jackets as well as a portion of the stall fee for the 2 MQHYA youth. A huge congratulation to Paget Houston! We also would like to thank Carol Houston for taking the youth advisor role for us as we were not able to attend this year. In all, it has been a fabulous first year as youth advisors and working together as a team: youth, parents, coaches and the board… it can only get better. We hope to continue growing our club which allow us to provide so much more opportunities for our youth. Thank you and we look forward to seeing all of you next year! Not only do I get to spend time doing what I love- riding horses - but I get to do it with people that I love. Riding takes up a large part of my life and I'm grateful to be part of something that allows me to pursue it. Just being part of the Youth Association is, by far one of the most positive things that has influenced my life, but to be a leader is more than I could have ever asked for. I hope everyone is as excited for 2014 as I am. Good luck. As this year’s president I would like to give a warm welcome to the new and returning Maritime Quarter Horse Youth Association Board! We have multiple new and refreshing ideas for activities and fundraisers for the coming year, I hope to see everyone at the Equine Review and the shows to participate. I am definitely looking forward to this season with my fellow youth; on and off of the show grounds. Although we aren't 100% sure of all of our events, I'm positive that they will turn out just as successfully as last year! Taylor Arsenault We are looking for more youth members. Please contact us if you are interested. Everyone is welcome. 13 | P a g e MQHYA MQHYA Membership Form 2014 Where success is not measured by ribbon and points, but by smiles and opportunities. Who would have thought 46 years after joining I would still be totally absorbed in that wonderful passion horses, or after 35 years of not showing would be going back in the ring to compete. So much credit for what I have had goes to my Mom. Her total love of animals and unending financial support made everything happen for me and provided me some amazing horses - September Dawn, Bluenoser, and The Loyalist. My first instructor, Lynda Forbes left her mark creating in me the total horseperson, always meticulous horse care and total horsemanship. I have memories of Herb Best, Derek Hanscome and John Perkins showing at the open shows when I showed as a kid. I showed on the open circuit up until my university years but career and raising a family put showing on hold. However there was always a horse in the barn where I could go every day, shovel my worries away and sing at the top of my lungs in the arena where I hope no one ever heard me. and shavings hauler, manure hauler and horse feeder. Our dining room is a tack room – really! In the fall of 2012 a health scare forced me to focus on my health and the switch to healthy eating and exercise. This and my mom’s illness and passing (she so wanted to see me ride again) and total support from Sarah and Andrew, and Melissa Hanscome training and pushing me, I started riding again. I tried western first on Bella but it “just wasn’t working” so I went back to my original roots, hunt seat on the mare from hell, Macy, who seemed to suit me just fine. We are pretty much alike! I was only brave enough at Skowhegan to try halter but by Sussex everyone encouraged me to ride and well I spent all that money on new gear and clothes so in I went and to my amazement got around in one piece, numerous times! Funniest thing was having Sarah, Andrew and Melissa all at different points around the ring and my Dad (mostly at Vonda’s canteen) supporting me. I am so lucky - not too many Moms still spend countless hours in the barn and many weekends with their 20 some year old kids. Now retired I have more time with my horses and everyone is pushing me to get back at it for next season. The saying “you’re never too old” applies to me. Looking forward to the 2014 show season! Susan is your MQHA Treasurer and is happily retired and living in Fredericton with her family. Naturally with my background I had my kids on horses as soon as they could walk, maybe earlier. I became my mother - supporting, driving to lessons and yes funding. Since purchasing our first quarter horse, Investa Cruise our stable has grown to 4. All the time being more than happy being barn mom and chief horse show groom, spending countless hours on the road to Quarter Horse shows including our dream trip for Sarah and Ripple My Zziple to the Congress. Thank God for a great husband, Jerome, who puts up with all this – hauling horses everywhere, barn repairman, hay 17 | P a g e MQHA - Classifieds The journal is a great way to advertise items that you have for sale. Our website received a behind the scenes upgrade early in 2013. The new program behind the website, Word Press, was chosen as a means of allowing myself to be able to easily update the site. It is similar to Microsoft Office Applications. Since the conversion, the page has been updated regularly and feedback confirms that the page is now used by the membership as a reference. The Equine Review site was transferred to the MQHA website and is now easily updated by myself. This fall work has been done to update the photos on the site. This is something that will continue as time allows. Our Facebook page has been a huge success this year. It has been kept fresh and up to date. I felt I saw a group of people come together and help each other out in many different areas, both inside and outside the show pen. It is wonderful to see exactly what can happen when people work together for a common goal. Your 2013 Directors worked hard to make “OUR” club a fun place to be, but with that being said it is “YOU” the membership that truly made this year a remarkable year, you laughed, you supported, you had fun at the shows, and encouraged each other, you all should be very proud!! "I think, most of the time anyway, the judges don't care what is on top of your head, they are most interested in the strength of your riding and the execution of the pattern,” she says. Hunter under saddle and equitation exhibitor Kelley Mundrick prefers the sleeker style, but understands it doesn’t outweigh safety. “I don't necessarily like the look and all the material, but safety is by far more important than vanity. There are many people who've learned the hard way and had their life changed because of it, so when it is such a simple step and way to be safe, why not?” says Mundrick. So, what does this mean for AQHA exhibitors? For youth competitors, be ready to see more and more approved helmets in classes. While the requirement goes into effect at the 2014 Youth World Championship show, exhibitors may want to get used to wearing the new style before the Brooklyn O’Brien and Denali – submitted for photo cover contest biggest show of the year. Kevin & Karen Thomas 34 | P a g e Coach’s Corner By Shandi Mitton Butterflies!!!!! We all know, as an exhibitor that preparing for a horse show is not easy. It is not easy mentally or physically. All of us work hard with our trainers, and on our own to ride and prepare, making sure that we know our horses will perform in the classes to the best of their ability. Even with all the hard work we still have to make sure that all the little things are in order. We and our horses need to look the part. If you have listened to the judges in the past they will tell you that you don't have to be all done up in sparkles but you do need to be neat and tidy. You need to make sure that your outfit is clean. Your hat needs to be properly shaped, cleaned and your boots should be spotless - which is sometimes a struggle at a rainy day show. First impressions are important you and your horse want to look well together. So speaking of your horse, he should also look the part. Your horse should be clean and have no bedding in his mane or tail. No sweat marks from yesterday's warm-up; because we all know your trainers (and you) made them sweat! Your horse should be clipped and shined up and ready to show. Now that's all the easy stuff! We can control all of those things very simply by paying attention and doing what we know we need to be prepared. The mental game on the other hand is a little different it's a little harder to prepare for! Hopefully some of these tips, that I've used, with some of my clients will help you to be a little more prepared for next show season! The mental game is completely in our heads, hence why it's called the mental game. We all play it, from rookie exhibitors to the top trainers in the world! Did I practice enough? Do I remember my pattern? Am I really ready for this? Should I go in? All those questions roll over and over in everyone's head!! We all call them butterflies in our belly, but I'm pretty sure the butterflies want to take over our brain and that's why it becomes mush!! Every trainer can tell you not to be nervous, down those butterflies. It's not going to help until you figure out how to handle it on your own! The only person in that pen on the horse is you! You're the one that needs to be prepared! Sooooooo.................... ...... If you're the kind of rider that goes in the pen and your mind goes at 100 miles an hour you need to do something to slow it down. Think of things that are monotonous, count fence posts, count people, count backwards, or spell names - anything that makes your brain slow down. This will slow down your thought process and let you relax, which makes your horse relax. That will give you a better ride. If you're the kind of rider who doesn't breathe when they go in the class, turns blue, and tries to get through it. Then another thing you can do is sing, to yourself, whistle or hum under your breath this will keep you breathing. You can't sing and not breathe!! If you are the kind of rider that loses your focus when you show, set short-term goals for yourself. Instead of trying to go all the way around the rail, only set a plan for 10 feet are 15 feet at a time. In a pattern, think about doing one maneuver at a time instead of trying to do the whole pattern in your brain at once. This way you only have to focus on the short-term goal, instead of a long-term goal. It will help you stay focused throughout the class. If you stay focused your horse will too. 35 | P a g e MQHA will be attending the: January Thaw Equine Expo 2014 Capital Exhibit Centre, Fredericton January 18th, 2014 9am -5pm We will be having a free draw! 2014 Memberships will be for sale. Drop in to our booth to say Hello! 36 | P a g e Coach’s Corner, con’t Most of the time when our horses are misbehaving in a class, and they have warmed up so well, it's because you've changed how you're riding. Most of the time this is because of nerves. Our horses love us so much, that they pay such close attention to everything we asked when we change how we ask they react. Most of the time in the wrong way but that's not their fault. They are only doing what they think is being asked of them. So remember the next time you have a bad ride blame it on the butterflies! Our horses just want to cookie at the end of the day!! Keep going in the pen! Practice makes perfect, the more you go in the easier it becomes! Remember everyone feels the same way you do! Change up your strength training workout, or start one, and add some type of cardiovascular (aerobic) activity like brisk walking, walk/jogging, elliptical or a class at the gym. I like to use circuit strength training with low weight and high repetitions to accomplish these goals. This in addition to 20-30 minutes of moderately intense aerobic exercise of your choice will accomplish a decent endurance foundation. Example of circuit training: Start with something in the lower body like lunges, squats or leg press machine. Using your own body weight, or light weight on the machine, perform 15-20 reps, or as many as it takes to feel the burn. That lactic acid you are feeling in your muscle is telling you what your threshold is, and exercising consistently will redefine when you hit the wall. By Emily J. Harrington Question: If I can’t make it to the barn to ride, what can I do at the gym to stay in shape for riding? Answer: As a rider, you are an athlete. Although nothing can replace riding for perfecting your ability in the saddle, there is a lot you can accomplish without your fourlegged friend. Ask yourself what your weaknesses are in the saddle. Is it your overall endurance or stamina? Do your legs or back become tired while you are riding? How is your balance? Are you riding centered? Regular trips to the gym can help with a lot of these issues. After you finish legs, let them recover by performing an upper body move like push-ups or chest press with lighter weight. (Note: You can use a modified push-up position with your knees down until you are strong enough to do them in plank position.) Once you accomplish 15-20 reps, or reach the point where you can no longer do the exercise in correct form, you are now ready to repeat the leg exercise again while your upper body recovers. This type of active recovery is very effective at teaching your body an increase in stamina. During this kind of workout, make sure to accomplish an allover body workout using all of your major muscles of your body. You can do your aerobic exercise for 2030 minutes before or after your circuit training … or even in the middle. There are no hard and fast rules as long as you just keep moving! Emily J.
