CORALQ CREEK C LUB U UARTERLY PDATE W W W. C O R A L C R E E K C L U B . C O M • W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 INSIDE • • • NEW WEBSITE DESIGN UPCOMING EVENTS GOLF COURSE UPDATE A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT DEAR CORAL CREEK CLUB MEMBERS, 2015 is off to a great start at the Club! The golf course is in fantastic condition, the tournaments and social events this season have been tremendous and the staff continues to go above and beyond to ensure that you and your guests have an exceptional personalized experience each and every time you are at the Club. As I write this letter, I am home in Marblehead, Massachusetts digging out from “The Blizzard of 2015” and the almost three feet of snow we Michael Zmetrovich President & received over a couple day period and wishing I was at Coral Creek. It is Managing Partner during times like this that I am reminded of how fortunate we all are to be able to get out of the harsh winter and enjoy the surrounds of such a tropical paradise! We recently held our annual National Club Championship where CCC members bring their Head Golf Professional and two members from another Club (usually in the North) that he or she belongs to. This year I brought a new team from Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio (which also has a magnificent and highly ranked Tom Fazio designed golf course). Just like every time I bring someone to experience Coral Creek for the first time, they all fell in love with the golf course, the tournament and the Club. It is very rewarding to expose new people to our wonderful Club! I am also happy to share with you that several of the Golf Professionals that have been playing in this tournament for years and years said that they thought the golf course was in the best condition they have every seen it and that it was the best tournament experience from the food to the tee gift of all the years they have been coming! I believe that being fortunate also brings the opportunity and responsibility to give back. Golf has been very good to me and I try and give back to the game through my involvement over the years with the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, the AJGA, junior golf, amateur golf and promoting the game. I would like to recognize and thank CC Member Jeff Tinervin for what he does to give back to the game through the Tinervin Cup and everything else he is involved in. For those members that have played with kids from Illinois or Illinois State or attended the Friday evening dinner over the years you know what Jeff and Madalyn Tinervin do for these kids. For those that have not had the chance to be a part of this unique event, Jeff and Madalyn generously underwrite the entire event where these kids get the opportunity to meet and play with CCC members, stand up and answer questions from the audience after the dinner but more importantly have a special experience in which hopefully someday makes them want to do something to give back to the game. I look forward to the rest of the season and staying out of the brutal winter weather as much as possible! I know you are going to enjoy your time at the Club and get the same rewarding feeling when you share our Club with someone new. We will do everything we can to make sure you do! Sincerely, Michael Zmetrovich President & Managing Partner MEMBERSHIP Being a Coral Creek member means different things to different people, yet universally, the pristine conditions and natural beauty of the golf course provide a first and lasting impression Karen Conroy for all who visit. Day one weather was reminiscent of a fall day up north, cool and cloudy, however, that did not cool down the competition within each match. After the first two nine hole matches the men’s teams were tied at eight points each. The third match format brought much success to the Islander team, as they took the lead and never looked back, winning this year’s Battle for the Bridge 23 ½ to 16 ½. In the ladies competition, the Islander team came out with guns blazing winning all four morning matches. They stretched out their lead after day one to six, which proved to be the catalyst in their quest of retaining the title, winning 11 ½ to 9 ½. Thank you to all participants who played in this year’s Battle for the Bridge making it a great event! Men’s Champions – Islanders Womens’ Champions – Islanders FAMILY HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT The holidays bring a lot of families down to southwest Florida for a little fun in the sun and there was plenty of that to be found at Coral Creek Club. The Family holiday tournament once again proved to be a great day for Coral Creek members and their families to enjoy time together at the Club. The skills challenges of hitting Fred and Wilma Flinstone on the range or working on your punch shot to hit a watermelon were both a hit. The results are as follows from all the flights: Nora Lea and Ed Reefe with Jeff, Michael, Donna, Ben and Lauren Childress St. Nick Flight: 9 Hole Better Ball of Two 1st place – David & Thomas Hull – 35 Kris Kringle Flight: 18 Hole Better Ball of Two 1st place – Nora Lea Reefe & Michael Childress – 63 2nd place – Ardie & Robbie Westerfield – 64 Rudolph Flight: 6 Hole Scramble 1st place – Maddie & Jane Banta – 39 Snowman Flight: 18 Hole Scramble 1st place – Jeff & Ben Childress – 61 2nd place – John & Will Westerfield – 66 The Hull Family – Sarah, David, Jillian, Thomas, Jamie, Marilyn and Julia ~8~ GOLF EVENTS We had ten returning teams and three new teams from different parts of the country rounding out this year’s field competing in the ninth annual Coral Creek National Club Championship. The new teams were Briggs Ranch GC, San Antonio, TX, The Peninsula Golf & Country Club, Millsboro, DE, and Spring Valley Country Club, Sharon, MA. Day one started out with a chill in the air, but as the day warmed up so did the competition. Team Peninsula took the lead in the gross division and Team Medinah was the leader in the net division. Day two, often considered “moving day”, had a format of two better balls of four converted to stable ford points. Team Peninsula continued their strong play to win the gross division with 78 points. In the net division, it was Spring Valley that played extremely well posting 53 points which vaulted them into the lead of the net division with 90 points. Congratulations to this year’s winners and thank you all for a great event! ILLINOIS STATE The number one ranked fighting Illini team brought their “A” game to this year’s Tinervin Cup, while battling fierce winds and cold temperatures. The morning four ball matches teed off at 8:30 shortly after the last raindrops fell from a cold front that moved through. This did not affect the play of Illinois, especially future Walker Cup player Charlie Danielson, who birdied 5 holes in a row on the front nine. After the morning matches Illinois jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the afternoon medal play matches. Illinois State came out ready to play taking early leads in a few of the matches, but the steady play of Illinois proved to be too much for the Redbirds. Illinois won this year’s Tinervin Cup in very tough conditions 8-1. Congratulations to all the student athletes from both teams and good luck this season! NATIVE BIRD BOXES We are very excited about the addition of hand crafted native bird boxes throughout the golf course that encourage the natural nesting habits of some of the beautiful birds found in our area. These birdhouses are Audubon sensitive habitats and house such species as Eastern Bluebirds, Wood Ducks, Purple Marlins and Carolina Wrens. The Club will be offering a limited number of wildlife and birding tours this season. A complete description and the locations of each bird box are available. As we make our way through the 2015 season I can’t help but think back to the dark and Jackson Reiswig, Golf Course chilly days of last winter – a stark Superintendent contrast to our current season. The summer drought left us at 15 inches below our annual average, which was a shocking 35 inches below the previous year! The early forecasts for this season predicted below average temperatures and above average rain, which raised concerns after such a brutal summer. But apparently our little area didn’t get the memo because this has been an AWESOME season. Beautiful sunshine, warm temperatures, and lots and lots of golf! The density of our bermudagrass turf has never been this good during these peak months for us. Coming in to this year we were very confident in our agronomic plan, the only unknown was the weather, which had been uncharacteristically extreme, in both directions, for far too long. The stability and warmth of these past few months has been exactly what we were looking for. Being able to continue growing grass throughout our winter months has put us in fantastic condition. We’ve seen great results from our greens and collar programs, and we have opened up many native areas. The addition of our native bird houses have been a lot of fun, and we’re excited for the tours we have planned in the upcoming weeks. I’ve had the opportunity to play golf at many wonderful places, often times alongside some of you. It’s always fun to see different features, new routings and beautiful designs. But still, after more than 12 years at the Club, I’ve yet to find it’s equal. The amazing part is that there’s no one thing you can point to that gives us our ambiance. The purity of the playing conditions. The seamless transition from course to nature. The impeccable service. The beautiful facilities and the warmth of our staff. The commitment to excel. It’s the combination of those attributes that make up the soul of Coral Creek Club. We welcome the opportunity to deliver you such beauty and happiness. It’s an absolute pleasure being part of Coral Creek Club, and I believe you feel the same way. As we continue to grow as a club, I want all of you to know that we grow as a family. The interactions between members, guests and staff here are exemplary, and I can’t contain my excitement for the future. The maturation of our club is a wonderful process, and I couldn’t be more confident in our commitment to excellence. There’s still a lot of golf to play, with plenty of season ahead, and I encourage you to take a moment or two on your next round to look around and reaffirm your decision to be part of Coral Creek Club. It’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it? ~ 11 ~ S TA F F D I R E C T O RY CORAL CREEK AMBASSADORS CLUB Special thanks to the members of The Coral Creek Ambassadors Club that have introduced their friends and family to the benefits of membership in the area’s finest club.
