Nestled well off the beaten path, the breathtaking facility is tucked into a picturesque panorama in scenic Delevan, New York, and is available for camping, conferences, and retreats. That’s why The Good News was interested in learning more about Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary, a Christian college with campuses in both Manhattan and Nyack, New York. We interviewed Nyack’s 12th President, Dr. Michael G. Scales, Ed.D. Dr. Scales brought extensive experience to his appointment as President of Nyack College in 2007. He had served as Executive Vice President and Vice President for Advancement and Enrollment, and had worked as a consultant for 50 colleges and university presidents. From those perspectives, Scales determined that Nyack College had the “most compelling story in higher education.” That seemed like a powerful conclusion, so we asked Dr. Scales to elaborate. By Pat Shea Remember the children’s story about the little blonde girl who drove three bears crazy while she tried to find a place (not to mention a chair, a bed and delicious food) that was “just right?” For individuals, church groups and families searching for a retreat center or summer camp with all the amenities that is not too big or too small, Asbury Camp & Retreat Center may be just the right fit. But first, a little history is necessary to establish the context of Scales’ response. Nyack’s founder, Dr. A.B. Simpson, was a Presbyterian pastor in New York City in the 1880’s. When his flock objected to the immigrants he brought into the church, Simpson declared he was not interested in being a “respectable Christian,” but wanted to be a radical follower of Jesus. As part of the 19th century American missionary movement, he set out to form an interdenomi- Located on the shores of Silver Lake in Western New York, Asbury Camp & Retreat Center is a non-profit retreat and conference facility that is open year round. A first step was to found the Missionary Training Institute, the first Bible College in North America and forerunner of the current Nyack College. With an apocalyptic zeal, every living room in the nation is bombarded by escalating atrocities at the hands of terrorists, political corruption and turmoil, intensifying war, tens of thousands of displaced people suffering, rampant starvation, the unmitigated proliferation of fatal diseases, moral anarchy legislated in the name of freedom, and on it goes as subtle as quicksand… And yet, marketing this madness does more than sell newscasts. While journalists are gearing up to go to work, scrutinizing current affairs, Pulitzer Prizes, and sweeps week, there are those who see it trending differently. A case in point would be Dr. Brian Albrecht, President of Global Outreach Mission (GOM). To see this headline-laden world with its endemic savagery, staggering need, and catastrophic crises through his eyes, is to see the sheer unstoppable love and grace of God in action. David Riddell, director for Asbury Camp & Retreat Center. Photo by Nyack College GOM is a missionary juggernaut passionately committed to the Great Commission with a gritty, albeit unassuming determination, that in God’s good judgment might just inspire a 29th Chapter of Acts someday. Initially christened as the “European Evangelistic Crusade,” it was established by James Stewart, a Scotsman with a passion for souls and a burden for Europe in the wake of the Second World War. In 1970, Dr. James Blackwood took the group’s helm and changed its name to Global Outreach Mission, reflecting a new focus that reached beyond Europe to the rest of the world. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.” (Psalm 105:1-2) Southern Gospel NY Brings Christians Together To Hear Southern Gospel Music By Pat Shea Bob and Joyce Spamer don’t just whistle while they work, as gospel music concert promoters for Southern Gospel NY, they sing, dance, and even clap too. According to its website, SGNY “… helps bring Christians together to hear southern Gospel Music and testimonies that encourage others to spread the Word of God to the lost.” So how do two people come up with an idea to become gospel music concert promoters without ever having done it before? Like so many things do in life, it began with a dream. The Good News Rochester In 2011, Joyce and Bob met and began dating and often enjoyed attending gospel music concerts together. Bob, an avid collector of gospel music, happened to remark to Joyce one evening that it had always been a dream of his to be a concert promoter of Southern Gospel groups. Joyce, a true go-getter, wasted no time in turning that dream into a total reality. E-mail: [email protected] “I’ve always been in event planning and hospitality so I just started calling a couple of groups that we knew and before long we were in the promotion business,” laughed Joyce. Viencek The Good News is a non-denominational, biblically-based Christian newspaper and is published bi-monthly since 2005. The newspaper is distributed to over 2,000 churches and ministries in New York State. Initially, the couple booked two gospel concerts, one that was held that year in April and one that was held in October at First Bible Baptist Church in Hilton, NY, the couple’s church at the time. Photo by SGNY Bob and Joyce Spamer with Southern Gospel legend Ed O’Neil (center), singer with the Dixie Melody Boys for over 50 years. to feel comfortable attending the concerts so having the performances at the auditorium instead of in a church was sort of like having it on neutral ground.” As word got out to musical groups about SGNY ministry and the Spamers, the couple began to work with more musical groups and changed the venue from their church to Roberts Wesleyan College auditorium located in Rochester in order to accommodate more people. As they continued to grow their ministry, the couple married. Working together, the Spamers contacted other local churches in the area and soon four churches on the Westside of Rochester and one on the Eastside of Rochester agreed to let SGNY use their facilities. “It’s been great to see how God has brought together all denominations to fellowship and hear good Christian music,” stated Joyce. “No matter what denomination a person is we encourage them to come and join us. Often they come back and usually bring other people along with them.” “The auditorium helped promote the concerts which really made it easier for us,” explained Bob. “We wanted people of all denominations Instead of two concerts a year, the Spamers now plan approximately one concert a month as well as bus trips to other gospel music venues. “God gave us a mission to give people a place that they could go to and have a good time, so we did it,” laughed Bob. Despite their busy schedules, Bob and Joyce manage the ministry with a sense of humor. “We’re supposed to be officially retired,” joked Bob, “But Joyce hasn’t retired yet from working fulltime at SGNY.” But like Joyce, Bob is also a “non-retired retiree,” working part time not only for the ministry, but he also owns and operates a small business. “It’s really Joyce who keeps everything up and running,” explains Bob. Joyce does manage to juggle a million tasks for the ministry every day, all with a smile, whether it’s securing concert venues, booking groups, creating newsletters, sending out emails or updating the SGNY website with the latest concert information and articles. It’s important to both Bob and Joyce that the website offers as much information as possible to help Continued on page A10 Special Thanks To Our Sponsors! The Good News A3 Christian Community Church Of East Williamson - Running To The Battle, Bringing Their “A-Game” To The Devil’s Doorstep By Rick Kern [email protected] The stone hurled at Goliath of Gath wasn’t very big and neither was the young shepherdboy who went up against him. Yet the boy and his stone took out a gargantuan, nine-plus-foot seasoned warrior who stood against his God and his God’s people. David may have been a youth, but he had his priorities and faith in the right place at the right time. He boldly got in the colossal Philistine champion’s face declaring, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied’” (1 Samuel 17:45). With some 80 to 100 people in attendance on a typical Sunday, Christian Community Church of East Williamson is not very big either, arguably a bit short of mega-church status. However, what the steadily growing fellowship lacks in numbers, it more than makes up for in boldness, daringness, and effectiveness under the passionate leadership of Pastor Tony Goddard. Moved by love for God and people, Goddard is a boots-on-the-ground minister whose vision and spiritual valor has him leading the charge in “…the name of the Lord Almighty” without thinking twice. He could have taken his playbook from David, “We don’t run from stuff, we run to it,” says the clergyman. “A lot of churches don’t even acknowledge the reality of the spiritual battle!” The 46 year-old father of three has been married 17 years and graduated from Elim Bible Institute in 2004. He has been in ministry for many years, however, and has a resume that embraces numerous denominations including American Baptist, Free Methodist, and Assemblies of God. Additionally, Christian Community Church (CCC), where he has served as Senior Pastor for seven years, is affiliated with Elim Fellowship, and living proof that a local church will assume the characteristics of its leadership. Among the more high-profile outreaches CCC has brought to the community, is their annual Bible Prophecy Conference. Scheduled in A wide variety of group fitness classes taught by certified Christian instructors. Fitness classes are open to adults and teens. Group Fitness Classes - Your Site or Ours Rochester, NY. 585-370-2480 www.victoryworkout.com Photo by Christian Community Church of East Williamson Pastor Tony Goddard November each year, the epic event brings in celebrated experts that are able to evaluate the trends of today’s history and apply end times prophecy to them. “Things are really ramping up fast, globally,” Goddard observes, “We want to make people aware about what the Bible says about our times.” Well attended since they began two years ago, the 2015 conference is slated to take place this November 6-7 and again promises to attract insightful speakers who understand the times. rity and are dropping their guard, but this is no time to kick back and rest on our laurels.” Not given to backing down from what he feels the Lord is leading him to do, while it grieves his heart to hear such disparaging words from a fellow minister, it’s onward and upward for him and CCC. “I’m just trying to get people to love the Bible and do what it says,” he declares resolutely. It’s a pretty simple philosophy and one that has Pastor Tony out in front of his flock running to the battle with them close behind. Interestingly, though the conference has enjoyed much favor with local clergy, it has not been embraced by his colleagues as readily as Pastor Tony had hoped or expected it to be. “I’ve had people coming against me for wanting to do a Bible prophecy conference,” he explains quizzically. “One local pastor actually screamed at me, ‘Everything you think you know about this book is going to be proven to be wrong!’” Not in Goddard’s mind, however, to him the Bible Prophecy Conference, which has become a CCC distinctive, is essential for Christians to maintain an eternal perspective. “In a day and age where there is less and less interest in what the Bible says prophetically, we’ve never been closer to the return of Christ than we are now,” he observes. “People have a false sense of secu- And according to Goddard, a battle it is! Along with Assistant Pastor, Gordon Pike, Goddard and Christian Community Church spend plenty of time in the spiritual trenches as it were. “We don’t go looking for it, it just happens and we deal with it,” he says. “We have the authority to deal with this and our job as a church is to get people free.” Among the fights he brings to the Devil’s doorstep, is a ministry of deliverance. “I don’t go looking for this,” he explains again emphatically, “God brings it to us and we try to help.” “We don’t need some newfangled thing,” he explains passionately, “that’s marketing and I’m past it. God spoke to us and our priorities are to love people, reach out, worship wholeheartedly, go to the streets, the prisons, and door to door — and that’s what we do.” And to do it, CCC puts legs on the love of God as they reach to find lost causes and embrace them with His reality. They have a food pantry, help people pay the rent at times, and minister to the homeless huddled in underground subways; bringing blankets, food, coats, Bibles, and tracts. All in addition to conducting adoring worship services and teaching parishioners how to press in to God’s call on their lives and live up to their light. “If I had to summarize our church in one word it would be ‘love,’” says Goddard, “love without compromising the truth.” He continues, “Everyone gets loved on — hugged. This ‘little church’ is the most loving, sincere, non-clicky fellowship…” With the kind of love, zeal, and combat faith blossoming at Christian Community Church, it’s not likely to stay a “little church” for very long. Scales, President Of Nyack College Continued from page A1 gelicals devoted to serving God, but it eventually became a denomination. The Alliance Theological Seminary at Nyack College is the Christian and Missionary Alliance’s seminary in the United States. And so, it is Nyack’s DNA that Scales finds so compelling. He believes the college has returned to its original purpose of reaching out to all people. “When I looked at the background of our founder who said, ‘Our Master knew no color line except the blood red cross,’ I realized this was not a johnny-come-lately institution.” Scales believes Nyack is a microcosm of our world, with 50 nations and 30 languages represented on campus. White students make up only a quarter of the student population, and this diversity is one of Nyack’s five intentional core values. He described the student body as a “salad bowl,” where everyone’s traditions, culture, and heritage are respected, even down to the food service. “If we can’t make the Kingdom of God work here, where can we?” he asked. The Good News: Nyack offers a Writing Center to help students develop writing skills for course work. How prepared for college do you see students today? Dr. Scales quickly pointed out that “preparedness has very little to do with intelligence,” and that perhaps the smartest people in the country are quarterbacks in the NFL. Yet they weren’t necessarily prepared for college. He noted that more than half of their students are eligible for Pell grants due to lower family income, and research has shown economic status is an indicator of how well one is prepared and motivated for college. “In our country’s Christian circles, we have to take seriously these people who will be leading our country, so we do our best to develop preparedness.” Photo by Nyack College Dr. Scales believes Nyack is a microcosm of our world, with 50 nations and 30 languages represented on campus. Nyack College has much to offer academically, and indeed, academic excellence is another core value. Degree options include an Accelerated Degree Completion Program, 38 baccalaureate degree majors, the Alliance Theological Seminary, masters’ degrees in organizational leadership, business, mental health counseling, and childhood education. Because the college was founded to reach all peoples for Christ, its Global Service-Learning offers the opportunity to travel around the world and study topics such as arts, history, music, Bible, theology, business, social work, nursing and intercultural studies. Being globally engaged is another core value. “The mission that prompted Dr. Simpson to long for Nyack to become a university was, and is, a global mission. It is believed that the last words spoken by our founder was a prayer for graduates working in ministries worldwide.” These core values work together and result in two other core values: exalting Christ by be- ing socially relevant and becoming personally transformed. The Good News: What would you say to someone looking for a seminary? Dr. Scales: Seminary students represent 80 different denominations. Alliance Theological Seminary (ATS) has a large Masters of Divinity program with 400 students, and their Doctor of Ministry program has over 100. “We want to be a support for all Christian people. We try to have a big tent. We’re open to any evangelical group that’s trying to build the Kingdom of God.” The Good News: As a college president today, what do you see as some of your greatest challenges? Dr. Scales acknowledged the pressure that can lock a college into a business model, but he feels a greater urgency to remain focused on Nyack’s mission. “We hire people who fit in with our mission; the right people, the right place, the right time... If you’re not careful, you get into a business model.” He added that a college’s best hope to sustain itself is adaptability. A college must be sensitive to its environment, regulations, bureaucracy, and cost, but must never lose focus of its mission. In addition to the Doctor of Ministry, they are working on a PhD on Ancient Judaism and Christian Origins, and the other being a Doctor of Psychology. “I want enough breadth in our institution so our students can leave here and create self sustaining ministries, businesses, or anything that would be of service so our students can be light and salt around the globe.” For more information call 800-33-NYACK or visit www.nyack.edu. A7 The Good News Summer Learning Tips For Parents 7. In the kitchen: Allow a child to help out by measuring ingredients and reading recipes. Ask more challenging questions such as how many pints are in a quart and how to divide ingredients. 8. Move it: Attend summer music festivals with your child and dance together. Sign up for summer swimming lessons. By Ralph Kerr Summer months are often filled with sports clinics, camps, library reading clubs, trips to a swimming pool and family vacations for many school aged children. But for other children, summer break means extra time in front of the television or computer screen. Students who do little during the summer to stimulate their minds can experience what is known as “summer slide.” No, that is not an injury or a contagious disease. It can be hurtful for a child’s academic progress however. Summer slide is when children lose academic skills, mostly in the areas of math and reading, and then experience setbacks when they return to school in the fall. Such setbacks can force teachers to spend about four to six weeks at the beginning of the schol year refreshing students and bringing them back to where they were at the end of the previous school year. The US Department of Education has reported that students’ reading skill fall behind about 25 percent each summer. The average student also loses about 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in math computation skills during the summer. Research also shows children gain weight more rapidly during summer break. What can parents do? 1. Read: Parents should read to their child every day. Children improve more quickly when an adult asks questions about the material and makes the child re-read difficult passages. 9. As a family: Plan and cook meals together, share family traditions/customs, or tell stories and reflect upon fun times. Dr. Ralph Kerr, President of the Teaching and Learning Institute. 2. On the road: Play “I Spy” with road signs for numbers, colors and shapes. Ask older children to estimate and calulate the travel time to a destination. 3. Get outdoors: Take children to parks and trails for walks or to ride bicycles, or plant a garden or flowers together. 4. In your community: Take trips to the museum or other cultural amenities during free admission days. Take children to the court house to see what happens inside a court room. 5. At the ballpark: Attend a Genesee Rapids Baseball game. (See the details in an advertisement) Teach young fans how to calulate staistics such as RBIs or ERA. 6. Volunteer: Ask a friend or relative to host a child at his or her workplace for a day, or pick up litter or volunteer at a soup kitchen or senior center. 10. Get prepared: Establish a school-night routine a couple of weeks before school starts that includes earlier bedtimes. Teenagers might be encouraged to take a part time job in order to make him or her more responsible and help understand what it’s like to have a job and earn their own money. Parents be prepared when your child says, “I’m bored!” Keep this article in a handy place and offer some suggestions. Not only will they take away the boredom they will help your child enjoy their summer more. The Salvation Army Of Greater Rochester Receives National Award Project Bundle Up helps keep children warm during the winter (Rochester, NY) - The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester was recently honored with a “Make A Difference Day” Award for its Project Bundle Up initiative. Project Bundle Up is The Salvation Army’s annual program that pairs 300 children in need with volunteers who help them shop for a new winter coat. Major Judy Hart, the Divisional Director of Shared Ministry of the Finger Lakes Region, and Lynn Mulvey, Director of Development of The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester, accepted the award on May 6 in Washington, D.C., courtesy of the “Make a Difference Day” organizers USA Today, Points of Light and Newman’s Own. Thirteen individuals and organizations from across the country were similarly honored. All awardees received a $10,000 check to further their good work. Last year’s Project Bundle Up took place on Oct. 25 as The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester, along with millions of volunteers across the nation, united with a common mission, to improve the lives of others, on “Make A Difference Day.” “Many of the children participating in Project Bundle Up have never owned a new coat before,” shared Major Judy. “The children get a new coat that they have personally selected, and they experience the compassion and generosity of the community through their interaction with volunteers and staff.” Photo by Michael J. Houghton Professors Honored As Project NExT Fellows (Houghton, NY) - Houghton College’s Dr. Jason Bintz, assistant professor of mathematics, and Dr. Brandon Bate, interim professor of mathematics, have been selected as 2015-2016 Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) Fellows. Project NExT is a national professional development program of the Mathematical Association of America for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. It began in 1994 with major funding provided by the ExxonMobil Foundation and the Dolciani-Halloran Foundation. “I am so grateful to have been selected as a Project NExT Fellow and for the college’s support of my participation,” commented Bintz. “Through this great program, I will collaborate to develop pedagogical approaches that will best serve our students at Houghton.” As part of the yearlong program, fellows attend a three-day Project NExT Workshop in Washington, D.C., a one-day workshop and the MAA Mathfest in Washington, D.C., and special events at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Seattle, Washington. Bate commented, “I feel blessed to have been accepted as a Project NExT Fellow. Kids2College is a federally funded grant administered by the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, which focuses on teaching students about the positive impact of college and how their interests and skills can be transformed into a promising and fulfilling future. The Kids2College curriculum and the campus visit serves to help sixth graders become aware of options beyond high school and see postsecondary education as a real possibility. During the campus visit, sixth graders from Cuba-Rushford, Scio, Friendship, Belfast and Wellsville school districts had an opportunity to experience college life for a day. They learned about living in campus housing; recreational opportunities afforded to college students; different areas of study; and, of course, dining at the college cafeteria. Houghton College is a liberal arts institution that challenges students to academic excellence - in the context of a relevant Christian community - and empowers them to enrich the world. These people still sing the old time Gospel hymns; you know the ones that you don’t get to hear too much any more because a lot of churches have gone to contemporary music? That’s music that tells a story. It has a message in it because the message is from the Gospel,” explained Bob. It’s the hope of both Bob and Joyce that through their efforts, people will come to enjoy Gospel music as much as they have through the years. “We know a lot of great people in the music industry now and many of them have become our friends,” explained Bob. “It’s been a blessing not only to listen to the music of groups like the Skyline Boys or the Blackwood Brothers, but it’s also been a blessing to sit down and talk to them too.” Southern Gospel NY will be hosting the musical group, Hyssong, at the Spencerport Bible Church, 1948 North Union Street in Spencerport, NY on July 18 at 7 p.m. The Jonathans will be playing at the United Methodist Church of North Chili, 2200 Westside Drive in Rochester on September 11 at 7 pm. On October 23, 4One Quartet will be playing at Aldersgate United Methodist Church at 4115 Dewey Avenue in Rochester at 7 p.m. All tickets for concerts are $12 in advance or $15 at the door and can be purchased by sending a check or money order with a self addressed stamped envelope to SGNY, 3250 Big Ridge Road, Spencerport, NY 14559. Supportive friends share with Duvall the need to turn to God for guidance and help. www.InHisWay.net An Interview With Rebecca Duvall, Author Of In His Way By Susan LeDoux with my son Michael, right before she passed away from breast cancer. Some stories need telling, and Rebecca Duvall’s is one of them. The Good News: Have you had the opportunity to tell your book’s story in public? Rebecca Duvall: I’ve had a few opportunities to share bits and pieces of my book with different groups at church. I’ve done a radio interview with Martha Smally at Plank Eyed Saint on Blogtalkradio. I’ve also done a television interview with Barb Marshall of Love Your Life Ministries. Like so many women, divorced and with two children, Duvall meets and marries the man of her dreams. Her hero is just that; first a paramedic, then a Deputy Sherriff, and now a Law Enforcement Chaplain. But also like so many people once without faith, Duvall tried to carry the world on her shoulders. She became a “volunteeraholic,” to her husband’s “workaholic,” and the two grew apart as they chased their separate dreams. Things were about to change for the Duvalls. Several other moms at her children’s school invited her to join their prayer group, Moms in Touch. Just as she was beginning to discover more about God, her world crashed when she learned of her husband’s affair. Later, serious health issues forced her husband to retire from active deputy duty. This time, rather than leave another marriage, Duvall stayed, having a new faith in God and support from his followers. Indeed, as she moved “in his way,” her marriage healed and her husband is now healthy enough to work as a Chaplain for Law Enforcement. It was during this tumultuous period that Duvall felt the Lord calling her to tell her story. The Good News: How did you begin the book amid all that turmoil, when you had no idea how things would evolve for you and your family? Rebecca Duvall: Since I had no idea how things would unfold, I decided to focus on where I wanted my story to begin, so I thought of a good starting point would be when my husband and I met. The Good News: You write about support from God and his followers, especially the prayer group Moms in Touch. Can you share your feelings about Christians reaching out to those who are in difficulty, and why you responded to the invitation extended by these women? Rebecca Duvall: I think I responded to these women when they invited me to the prayer group because I had already gotten to know them through volunteering at our children’s school. We had a commonality, wanting to help our children and their school. When I found out they were Christians, I was surprised because they hadn’t tried to shove God down my throat. At the time, I thought it was a Christian’s job to tell others they needed God because they were sinful. Now I think it’s a Christian’s job to treat others with love, grace, and mercy and not to judge, but help whenever possible, however possible. I believe this will look different for each of us because God calls us to help in different ways. The Good News: You were married in 2001 and baptized in 2009. Can you share how God led you through those eight years to faith in him? Rebecca Duvall: In the first three to four years of our marriage, I thought everything was perfect... Over the next few years my husband and I grew apart. We no longer seemed to Are You a Christian Author? Did you write a Christian Book? Advertise your new book in The Good News! The Good News: How long did it take to write In His Way and are you currently working on another book? Rebecca Duvall: About three years, and I am not currently working on another book, but I am tossing around the idea of creating a Bible study to go with the book; something that will point others to God and help them to see how God is working in their lives by pointing them to scripture. Rebecca Duvall have anything in common. During the 2007/08 school year, while the Moms in Touch prayer group was praying for me, God began to reveal the reality of my life to me and how empty it was. He helped me see and admit how lonely I was. The Good News: Based on the experiences in your book, what advice would you give your daughters about marriage? Rebecca Duvall: It takes two to make a marriage work and it takes two to let if fail. Be patient and, most importantly, talk to one another. Share your feelings, dreams, and fears. Invite God into your marriage. Let him be your guide and counselor. The Good News: Please take this opportunity to share whatever is on your heart with our readers. Rebecca Duvall: Wherever you are in life, God is there with you, even if you don’t acknowledge or believe in him. He loves you and wants what’s best for you. He’s waiting for you to seek him, so he can change your life, make you new. Your life won’t always be easy. There will be many trials, but you could walk through your trials with a peace only God can bring. I hope to see you in this life, or heaven, someday and hear how God changed your life! In His Way is available on Amazon in paperback or Kindle eBook at www.amazon.com/ author/rebeccaduvall. The Good News: You have a website and blog (www.inhisway.net/blog). Do you ever wonder what to write in your blog? Rebecca Duvall: I often wonder what to write or share on my blog. However, I pray about it regularly and trust God will reveal what it is he wishes me to share… God has faithfully given me words to write, but not on a weekly basis. The Good News: There is an exquisite quilt featured on your book and website. Who made it? Rebecca Duvall: My daughter Ashley was the photographer of the quilt. My mother Sharon made the quilt when I was pregnant Christian Author Wins Literary Award For “A Nation Under Judgment” (Katy, TX) - Richard Capriola’s book “A Nation Under Judgment” received a Reviewers Choice Award from Readers Views. The award was presented for the book’s contribution to relationships and spirituality. Capriola’s book explores our nation’s social policies from a Scriptural rather than a political point of view. “A Nation Under Judgment” examines social policies such as hunger, poverty, income equality, marriage, and the environment. It also includes a chapter on how campaign contributions rather than the Bible influence lawmakers in shaping national policies. “As we enter into another national political campaign and election cycle it’s important that every Christian examine these issues from a Scriptural rather than a political point of view” Capriola said. “Looking at our nation’s policies from God’s point of Visit us online at www.TheGoodNewsNewYork.com view rather than a political agenda will help Christian voters hold office seekers accountable for their positions which too often are opposite from God’s point of view.” Christian book reviews of “A Nation Under Judgment” have been impressive. Heather Randall, CEO of Christian Woman Affiliate said the book is “well researched and Scripturally based.” Another Christian reviewer commented “Every legislator, every believer, apologetic, preacher and evangelist needs this resource on their shelves.” Capriola believes many Christians believe our nation is moving away from God when constructing national policies. “If we continue down this road are we setting ourselves up for judgment?” he asks. “A Nation Under Judgment” is available in ebook format for $2.99 at Amazon and www.BookBaby.com. A11 The Good News Pastor Cooper Of Love Ministries Fellowship Believes Every Christian Is Called To Ministry By Susan LeDoux (Houghton, NY) - Houghton College would like to recognize local students who achieved academic excellence by earning a place on the President’s List, Dean’s Honor List, or the Dean’s List at Houghton College for the spring semester of 2015. “Can you bring together a group that can attract others with love?” That was the question God put on Lead Servant and Pastor James R. Cooper Sr.’s heart in 2006. Although at the time, straddling dual roles as a Xerox employee and an ordained minister, Cooper said “yes” to this question, and Love Ministries Fellowship formed in 2011. The congregation settled into its permanent home last year at 740 Marshall Rd. in Chili. When approached about this article, Pastor Cooper suggested The Good News meet some of the congregation because the church “isn’t about me, it’s about the people,” he said. Eddie Hammonds Jr. and his wife Sherrie Tanner Hammonds were seeking a particular church home because Sherrie is of Muslim background and often felt lost and alien in Christian churches. She was seeking balance as she tried to learn the difference between the two faiths. The Hammonds felt welcomed the first Sunday they visited, and Pastor Cooper’s preaching style was just what Sherrie was looking for. The Fellowship holds Bible study on Friday evenings. It draws about 30 people, many not even members of the church. After the main discussion, Sherrie likes the small groups where people share what the evening’s message meant to them, “because God’s Word touches people in different ways.” Sherri grinned and said, “It’s like Goldilocks and the 3 little bears. This church is just right!” Shaquan Wiggins had been attending a large church, where there was little chance for a pastor/member relationship, when his mother suggested Love Ministries Fellowship. Known and appreciated by his pastor now, Shaquan runs the sound board during worship. Arlene Brown learned hands on ministry at Zion Hill Baptist Church as she visited the sick and fed the hungry. But it was the teaching that attracted her to Love Ministries Fellowship. To earn the academic honor of the President’s List, Dean’s Honor List or the Dean’s list, Houghton College students must meet the following GPA requirements during their semester of study: President’s list, GPA of a perfect 4.0; Dean’s Honor List, GPA of 3.75 to 3.99; Dean’s List, GPA of 3.5 to 3.74. President’s List includes: Sarabeth Paine, Rexville; Bethany Rudolph, Painted Post. Photo by Love Ministries Fellowship Pastor James Cooper and members of Love Ministries Fellowship. Toastmaster, but also as a Christian so she and others can share the Gospel comfortably. As Arlene talked about her ministry, Pastor Cooper added that he believes everybody is called to ministry; it is just a matter of what that ministry is and how one uses it. He encourages his congregation to serve wherever they find their calling. Drew Miltsch and Bob Ludwig are using their talents to worship and serve God. Miltsch had been playing piano at another church but attended Praise Night at Love Ministries in 2012. He returned every Sunday thereafter because he felt God was speaking to him and he had to be there. “Not that I wasn’t hearing from him outside, but it was very clear on Sunday mornings.” Bob Ludwig plays guitar and he first visited the church to accompany Suwilanji, a female vocalist from Zambia, Africa. When he returned to promote another of her concerts, Pastor Cooper mimed strumming a guitar and suggested he always bring his guitar to church. “I brought it with me when I came back. The love here is so intense and real... it’s what keeps me here.” When Danette Campbell-Bell and her husband, Maurice, opened their home to a Chinese international student, Danette felt called to introduce the girl to Christ. Despite her past negative experience with a church, she checked the internet and discovered Love Ministries Fellowship. She walked in with trepidation, ready to flee at any moment, but they took their seats after receiving a warm greeting. That Sunday she learned about Love Ministries’ outreach to the people at the corner of Bay and Niagara streets in the city. “Wow,” she thought, “this church is actually doing something.” Pastor James Cooper Claiming the verse that tells us we can do all things in Christ who strengthens us, Arlene is one of the church’s Word Ministers. Already an outstanding Toastmaster (of Toastmasters International) she mentors others in the art of delivering sermons. Improving all aspects of communication is not only her mission as a Houghton College Recognizes Students on Honor Role It all began a few years ago when a young man had been murdered at that corner. Remix Ministries stepped in to help them heal and Love Ministries Fellowship soon joined them, bringing food, love, clothes, prayer, and music. “We don’t treat them like ‘those people,’” Pastor Cooper said. He told of a young man Christian Writers Needed who said he was ready to turn himself in to the police, after Cooper talked and prayed with him. Another man quietly pulled a knife from his pocket and dropped it into a gutter. “You think you’re doing something for others, but it has done wonders for us and our faith walk. The crack house across the street is gone. The people are respectful and talk to us,” Cooper said. A friend invited Reander Hogue to Love Ministries. “The teaching, the people loving on me, touched my heart,” she said. Now she passes that love on in her role as “gatekeeper” (greeter). Pastor Cooper spoke of Reander’s gift of discernment; she is able to warn the church or people of things that are coming, as well as give direction. Drew Miltsch said seeing this in Reander was a huge growth experience for him. “I didn’t understand prophecy but when I saw it... I wasn’t such a skeptic.” Pastor Cooper’s wife, Terri, leads the youth ministry, which has three components. The first was obvious as, downstairs, about 20 students, K-12, were busy studying with volunteers from the University of Rochester. The second is creative dance, where children perform on special occasions like New Years, Christmas and Easter. Finally, “College and Career” helps 7th to 12th graders prepare for life after high school – whether in a trade or college. By hearing stories from this close knit faith family, it became clear that here the Word is wonderfully preached, and learning takes place on every level. People are loved, valued, and empowered to be the people God created them to be. A12 The Good News Pray for the National Day Of Prayer Initiative (NDPI) Peace of Held In Rochester In May Jerusalem By Susan LeDoux PSALM 122:6 Whether it’s organizing Rochester’s National Day of Prayer Initiative that occurred on May 7th or running a Bible club, for Bishop David Singleton it’s all about raising Jesus high and bringing others to Him. On the Ark of Jesus Ministries’ 4th National Day of Prayer Initiative, over 600 people circled City Hall, and then the County Office Building, to lift our local officials in prayer. The faithful asked for divine intercession for families, religion, government, education, business, media, as well as arts and entertainment. TEN COMMANDMENTS Exodus 20: 3-17 1. You shall have no other gods before Me. 2. You shall not make for yourself any graven images. 3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 5. Honor your father and your mother. 6. You shall not murder. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. You shall not lie. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s things. Hometown Hunger Concert To Be Held At Davis College On August 29 Submitted by Davis College (Binghamton, NY) - What if you could help two groups of people at the same time? Davis College, in Johnson City, NY, is fighting Hometown Hunger while developing tomorrow’s leaders through the administering of BackPacks for Kids. BackPacks for Kids discretely provides food-insecure children with a weekend supply of food during the school year. Eligibility is determined by the school district, and the neediest children within the public school system are eligible. Each Friday, teachers discretely slip a sack of food into the students’ backpacks to take home. A typical weekend supply bag contains the following: one jar of peanut butter; tuna or chicken, two instant oatmeal breakfasts, one canned fruit, a vegetable, a can of soup, a canned meal, a dried meal such as macaroni and cheese, and two snacks. Locally, the program began in 2013 with a partnership between New Life Ministries, the Union-Endicott School District and the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. Together, these Hometown Heroes have provided over 13,000 weekend rations. To launch and fund the BackPacks for Kids program at Davis, the college will host a Hometown Hunger Concert on Saturday, August 29th featuring the band “When Oceans Rise”. Doors will open at 6:00 pm, and the concert begins at 7:00 pm. Admission is $10. During the concert, a collection will be taken for those who wish to contribute or sponsor a child. A sponsorship of $125 supplies a needy child with food for every weekend of the school year. To purchase tickets, make donations, and sponsor a child visit www.davisny. edu. To volunteer a community group for a repack, or for more information on corporate sponsorship or internships, please contact Professor Sheila Eldred at backpacks@davisny. edu. “God has been gracious,” Bishop Singleton said about the diversity of the Body of Christ. “This year the Catholic Church came on board and translated our material into Spanish,” and news of the event was carried on television and radio. “It is a national initiative and Rochester is the epicenter.” With a broad smile, he told of Apostle Arthur Wilson from Shreveport, Louisiana, who sent pictures and texts back home, exclaiming “we gotta do this!” Singleton believes as people come together for the NDPI, they will build effective relationships and accomplish more, over time, working together. The Bishop is still building his team, which meets Monday evenings, 6 p.m. at Ark of Jesus Ministries, and he welcomes anyone with a heart for this ministry. Much work remains to be done, as this will become a global initiative as well. “I’ve talked with people in Africa, India, Russia, Philippines, and Germany who have an interest in this.” For more information, call (585) 340-7027. In the same spirit of introducing Christ to others, Outreach Impact Saturday occurs annually on the third Saturday in September. “On that day, we are asking the Body of Christ globally (in the city and towns) to come outside of their worship facility, and be a conduit and presence of the Love of the Father, right on their own lawns.” “Can you imagine if, just in Rochester, even 30% of the churches that name the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, all came out on this set day?” he asked. Photo by the Ark of Jesus Ministries On the Ark of Jesus Ministries’ 4th National Day of Prayer Initiative, over 600 people circled City Hall, and then the County Office Building, to lift our local officials in prayer. month at 9 a.m. A cross section of the community (elected officials, judges, community workers. etc) listens to five or eight guests take three minutes to say who they are, what they offer, and what they are looking for. This sharing and networking has helped people and organizations “maximize in areas where previously minimized.” Over the last 14 years, the meetings facilitated linkages across the greater Rochester community, bringing resources where needed, all the while enjoying a hearty breakfast. If interested, call (585) 235-2652. Children and parents fall under the Ark of Jesus Ministries umbrella as well. Its Help Me Read Program at School #17 started in response to the poor graduation rates in the city. With 65 volunteer tutors, this separate, not-forprofit program is primarily relational, because sometimes students just need people who care about them to listen to their problems. Then, using reading as the vehicle, the program fosters critical thinking, rather than just memory and recall. Children develop skills to navigate difficult situations and make good decisions. This September, he plans to launch Help Me Soar for grades 5 and up. His enthusiasm spanning 30 years of pastoral ministry, Bishop Singleton knows the value of clergy learning from and supporting each other. Ark of Jesus Ministries will host a Kingdom Service Development Conference on August 12th through the 14th to help pastors and ministry leaders develop their calling. Call (585) 262-6420 to register. Bishop Singleton welcomes volunteer tutors who can give two hours between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM, one day per week. Tutors have support through an on-site coordinator plus a 90 minute orientation session. Like most non-profits, the program needs more funding. Because effective parenting is vital, Singleton plans to start TIPS Program (True Intervention Purposefully Successful) this September. For parents who may have struggled in school themselves, TIPS will teach them how to advocate for their children and navigate the educational system. Ark of Jesus Ministries will award $100 scholarships to four 6th graders, the money going into a trust for those college years ahead. In order to encourage minority children to enter the professions, the Ark’s Professionally Speaking Program introduces older students to multi-cultural professionals. In speaking directly with them they learn that they, too, can reach any goal. The Forbid Them Not Bible Club started with five children. It now has 40 children who meet after classes at School #17. This opportunity to share God’s Word with young children offers an alternative to what flows through television and the internet. “I believe what I do is supposed to succeed.” Singleton is full of expectation, but does have a wish list: ●People interested in being part of, or starting, the Bible Club. ●Tutors ● People to join the National Day of Prayer Initiative or Outreach Impact Sundays. Along the same line, his church offers KAMI (Kingdom Assignment Ministries International), that provides on-going insight, wisdom, and prayer for pastors. Uniting others in Kingdom work, the Ark’s Celebration of Life Community Breakfast Meetings occur on the 2nd Tuesday of the Bishop David J. Singleton Singleton believes, “We can take this city, county, region, for Christ. But it will not happen by accident. It will only happen on purpose. We’ve got to be willing to work together. Scripture says, ‘what-so-ever he does shall prosper.’ So the only thing that will prosper is what you’re doing.” (Houghton, NY) - Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, is proud to announce that the Houghton College Chapter inducted nine new members on April 23, 2015. A group of individuals, for instance, used the same stockbroker. Each lost a very significant amount of money in the stock market. For almost six years, none of these individuals had any inkling they had a legal claim to recover the money they lost. Fortunately, their new stockbroker recommended they contact me just a few months before the six year mark had passed. I say “fortunately” because a six year “eligibility rule” applied to these claims. I was able to help recover a considerable portion of the money each person lost. Like most people, these individuals assumed their losses were simply the result of a declining stock market. In fact, their losses came during one of the biggest declines in the stock market ever. What they did not realize, however, is that stock brokers, money managers, investment advisors, etc. are held to certain standards and have certain duties. Failure to adhere to these standards and carry out these duties entitles the investor harmed by the misconduct to bring a legal claim to recover investment losses. Common areas of investment misconduct are: Unsuitable Investments – your broker recommends investments that are not suitable for you given your age, financial situation, risk tolerance, etc. Example: you’re 65, retired, and the money the broker is investing is all you have; nonetheless, your broker invests you in speculative stocks. Unauthorized Trading – your broker buys or sells investments without your prior consent. Churning – your broker is “churning” your account when the broker makes an excessive number of trades and the trades generate sales commissions for the broker. Over-concentration – your account is overly concentrated in one or a limited number of investments. Overconcentration violates one of the most fundamental biblical rules of investing – diversification. Ecclesiastes 11:1-2. Conflicts of Interest/Breach of Fiduciary Duty – a professional investing your money owes you undivided loyalty and cannot recommend any investments in which the professional has a conflict of interest. Example: I have seen financial institutions (e.g., banks, trust companies) recommend investments they own (e.g., their own mutual fund) or derive a benefit from, despite the fact that the investment is not in the investor’s best interests. Margin Improprieties – your broker buys stock on “margin” (i.e., borrows the money to pay for the stock) without your permission. Negligence/Failure to Supervise – your broker/brokerage house is careless in managing or supervising your account. Example: you experience a major negative change in your financial circumstances and your broker fails to adjust your investments accordingly. Omission of Facts – your broker fails to disclose material (important) information concerning an investment. Investment misconduct is not limited to stocks and stockbrokers but involves all types of investments (mutual funds, options, etc.) and all investment advisors and money managers. Between 3200 and 8900 securities arbitration claims are filed each year. I believe significantly more claims exist; it’s just that people are largely unaware of their rights. If someone has experienced a large investment loss it would be prudent to consult with an attorney experienced in these matters. Also, of particular interest to the readers of this paper is the fact that a heightened duty of care exists when a professional is investing money for a church, ministry, or nonprofit organization. Losses in these accounts should be scrutinized very closely. About the Author: Christian attorney Mark F. Viencek has over 20 years experience. Other entertainment at the wheel includes the special NYS license plates supporting fishing, unions, the Army National Guard, the Buffalo Bills and any of a host of other possibilities. However, you will not see a license plate advocating for adoptions that shows two smiling children, with the words “Choose Life.” New York State will not allow such a plate. A ruling of the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the New York State position. It said that many people would see the plates as “patently offensive” and the judges were concerned that the plates might “engender violent discourse among drivers.” A dissenting judge, Debra Ann Livingston, said that speech is no longer free when a government official decides who may and may not speak. She also pointed out that some of the currently approved specialty plates, such as those supporting unions, are also controversial. The suit was brought against the state of New York by the Children First Foundation after New York rejected their “Choose Life” plate. Alliance Defending Freedom, which represented the foundation, sees this as a chilling effect on free speech, especially on college campuses. A case in Texas similar to this one is currently being considered by the Supreme Court. Therefore, things still could change in New York. The new term will begin June 1 and run through May 31, 2019. “Our deep appreciation to President Mullen, the administration, faculty and staff as you are present and working daily to provide the unique experience to students that is the hallmark of Houghton College,” said Bobbie Strand, chair for the Board of Trustees, in a campus-wide memo. By Joyce Spamer Are you looking for a place to go for an evening full of Gospel fellowship? Well, we have the right place for you! On July 18, 2015 at 7:00 PM, Southern Gospel NY will be bringing to the Rochester Area a family called Hyssongs. Dell, Susan and Richard Hyssong travel fulltime as the award-winning Hyssongs. Their energetic family ministry combines family vocal harmony, humor and brass instruments (Trumpet and trombone) to delight audiences with their Christ-centered message, shared through the powerful medium of music. The family’s classical music background, along with the family’s harmony and specific chord structures, lend them a unique sound that has made quite an impact on audiences. The group has been singing together as a family for more than 18 years. In that time the Hyssongs have received many accolades for their quality, inspirational Southern Gospel sound. The group was awarded Top New Trio at the 2014 Singing News Fan Awards. They have also consistently placed songs on Southern Gospel Top 40 charts, such as the 2013 single “Oh What A Name” and “Is It Just Me”. In 2014 their song “God’s In Control” was #24 and “I Was Blind, But Now I See” is #17 for the month of November on the Singing News Chart. The Hyssongs were on the cover story in an issue of Christian Voice Magazine in 2012 and have been featured in Singing News Magazine several times. The group has also been featured on Paul Heil’s “The Gospel Greats” radio program. The Hyssongs perform at more than 250 events each year throughout the United States and Canada. They minister in churches, auditoriums and on Gospel singing cruises, as well as on television and radio. The Hyssongs have had the opportunity to sing on the main stage at the Na- President Shirley Mullen Dell, Susan and Richard Hyssong travel full-time as the award-winning Hyssongs. tional Quartet Convention, perform annually at Dollywood and at Renfro Valley’s All-Night Sing. Through Compassion International, the group has also been privileged to sing in El Salvador, Central America. This past Mother’s Day, The Hyssongs released Makayla’s Heart: Moment By Moment, a book which chronicles their journey through heartaches and triumphs. On July 19, 2008, at 4:44 a.m., the Hyssongs celebrated the birth of Makayla, Richard and his wife Kelly’s newborn. That excitement quickly changed to horror three days later. The doctors discovered twenty-plus tumors in Makayla’s heart with one blocking 75 percent of the blood flow. When she was thirteen days old, masses of brain tumors were found. They were told their precious baby probably would not survive, and if she did, she would not walk, talk, or ever be like other children. Dell Hyssong relates, “Everyone who has heard about Makayla wanted us to put her story in writing. Her miraculous life has emboldened many to remain strong in their faith and gives hope to those going through difficult situations. As I wrote her story along with co-author Holly Weiss, my prayer was that many lives would change as a result of reading our story. We also wanted to give readers a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes of our itinerant ministry. Our family is just like everyone else’s: we hurt, laugh, and cry, but know that no matter what comes our way, God is always in control.” Don’t miss out on a great time of fellowship with The Hyssongs. They will be at Spencerport Bible Church 1948 N. Union Street in Spencerport, New York 14559. Tickets are only $12 in advance and $15 at the Door. You may purchase by going on line to www.sgny.net, call 585-329-3840 or send a return self-addressed envelope along with a check or money order to SGNY 3250 Big Ridge Road Spencerport, New York 14559. The Board welcomed members of the president’s cabinet and representatives from all areas of the campus community to join in its business sessions and discussions dealing with enrollment, finance, planning for a campaign, and plans for the future. The Board joins the president, administration, faculty, staff, and students in the creative thinking, planning, and actions required to equip Houghton College to carry out its historic mission. Mullen has served as president of Houghton College for nine years and was featured in 2012 in Christianity Today’s October issue as one of the “50 Women You Should Know.” More recently, Mullen was honored by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I–Olean) as a 2015 Woman of Distinction. Houghton College is a liberal arts institution that challenges students to academic excellence - in the context of a relevant Christian community - and empowers them to enrich the world. The college of 1,000 students is located in Western New York, just 65 miles from Buffalo and Rochester. For more information, please visit www.houghton.edu. A16 The Good News Devotional Corner Are You in the Right Relationship with Your Creator? Steps To Salvation 1. You Must Repent You must repent of your sin and admit to God that you are a sinner. The Bible says: “... that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.” (Acts 26:20) 2. You Must Believe You must believe with all your heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died on the cross to save you and was resurrected. “... While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) 3. You Must Ask You must pray and ask our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive your sins and save you from an eternity in hell.“ ...With the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:10) 4. You Must Receive You must pray and tell the Lord that you wish to receive the wonderful gift of eternal life. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”(Romans 6:23) 5. Turn in faith to Jesus Christ Turn in faith to Jesus Christ by praying a prayer like this: “My Heavenly Father, I come to You admitting that I am a sinner. I ask your forgiveness. I believe that Your Son, Jesus, died for my sins and was resurrected on the third day. I repent in my sins and give my life to Jesus. I receive Jesus as my Savior and ask you to give me eternal life. Amen.” with Pastor Ray Viola Koinonia Fellowship 500 Main St. East Rochester, NY 14445 (585) 385-0450 www.KoinoniaFellowship.com What’s Missing? Jesus Christ was under no delusions in His understanding of the world system. “And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19). “‘The world cannot hate you; but Me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.’ ” (John 7:7) The apostle John wrote, “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.” (1 John 5:19) Because the very nature of this world is contrary to the will and purposes of God, James wrote to the church these words of warning: “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” (James 4:4) What is missing in the world that causes it to be identified in these graphic terms? The Lord Jesus Christ dwelling in the hearts of mankind. When Jesus comes to dwell in the life of a per- son, he or she will become what Jesus calls “the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). Salt in the days of the Bible was used to preserve food to keep it from rotting. It was used as medicine to curb infection. It was even used at times as a means of paying Roman soldiers. Salt was a very important commodity in those days. Because you and I have access to salt so easily, the words of Jesus may not have the same impact upon us that it did upon His listeners who heard Him speak those words at that time. The world that we live in is just as rotten as was the world in Jesus’ days, or perhaps even to a greater degree now with the constant barrage of moral filth via the internet and other forms of technology. But God so loves the people of this world that He sent His Son Jesus to die for their sin (John 3:16-18), and He sprinkles His bride, the Church, into their lives to make an impact for Him. Impact? Indeed! When you add salt to your food, it enhances its flavor. When people come into contact with a “salty” Christian, they may indeed persecute us and say all kinds of nasty stuff (Matthew 5:10-12), but when they see us doing the things that God tells us to, there will be those who will glorify our heavenly Father (Matthew 5:16). Loving Jesus supremely is the key to being a salty Christian (Matthew 22:36, 37). Setting The Lord Jesus Christ apart in our hearts (1 Peter 3:15) is a decision that every saint must make daily if he or she purposes to be the salt of the earth. What is missing in this fallen world system? Salt. Beloved, wherever God in His divine providence sprinkles you today, it is so that you might bring Him glory in such a way that others “may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (Titus 2:10), and be drawn unto Him. Pastor Ray Joy Community Church Embraces New Pastors By Susan LeDoux Pastor James’ immediate goals are to clarify the mission, reevaluate core values, look at processing discipleship, clarify lines of communication, and engage in leadership training. When they met with Pastor Tony Martorana and the elders of Joy Community Church, James and Greta Loughlin knew immediately that this congregation shared their heart and vision for outreach. How they came to follow Pastor Tony Martorana in Rochester’s Profetta funeral-home-turned-church is part of the saga of this spirit-filled faith community. Going back to the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, during the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement (akin to the Protestant Pentecostal movement), a prayer meeting group formed. Soon the group saw a need to incorporate as a non-profit organization and, in 1982, in a do- “I’m a ‘mobilizer.’ I love ‘mobilizing’ people to effectiveness,” he said. The church already has highly effective ministries. There’s the Joy Family Medicine walkin clinic, staffed by an administrator, MD, RNs, and nurse practitioners, where anyone in need can get medical care. Pastor James and Greta Laughlin nated church in Penfield the group became the New Jerusalem Community Church, with Al Gerhardt as pastor. In 1986, Pastor Gerhardt and his flock decided to move to the city and purchased the Profetta Funeral Home at 890 Goodman Street North. The new “Joy Community Church” later bought the building next door and transformed what was once a bar into the Gerhardt Neighborhood Outreach Center. In 2004, Tony Martorana followed Al Gerhardt as pastor at Joy and the congregation continued to “enlarge their tent.” Years earlier, Greta and James met while undergraduates at Elim Bible Institute, where Pastor Tony was then the international youth leader alumnus. James began his work as an ordained pastor in 1992, when he and Greta served a church in Minnesota for over five years. When they heard through a friend that Pastor Tony was now moving on (to Tampa, Florida), they began a dialogue with Joy Church in January of 2014. It wasn’t long before the trustees and the congregation realized this joyful, enthusiastic pastor duo would be perfect for their vision. “What caught our eyes when we came (was) the effectiveness of the church in the community and it resonated with us as leaders,” James explained. Reaching people in the city is what Joy Community Church has been about for over 20 years, he said. During the recently publicized neighborhood walk, congregants of Joy and other churches joined members of the Rochester Police Department, to knock on doors and greet their city neighbors. The experience offered an opportunity to open dialogue and build trust between the residents and the police. They spoke, not only of their vision for the city, but also of how the congregation has welcomed both of them as pastors. Greta described a congregation, secure in its identity, which possesses a strong core of committed individuals who are providing stability through this transition period. Visit us online at www.TheGoodNewsNewYork.com The church’s Place of Hope Pregnancy Resource Center is just that — a place of hope, under the able direction of Kirsten Smith. Here, women and girls can obtain counseling to help them make Christ-centered decisions. The staff will walk a girl through her pregnancy, give crisis intervention care, make referrals to other agencies, and help deal with associated problems such as sexually transmitted diseases. A 24-hour helpline is maintained by dedicated volunteers. “It’s a revolving door,” Greta said, “where they care for the whole person.” The Bundles of Joy program provides free clothing for infants and children, as well as cribs and car seats. The Hope Shop, led by Matt Delmege, provides bread, produce, canned and dry goods, as well as adult clothing. They use the church’s vans to pick up donated food, and also bring people in for ministry or services. The Laughlins are excited about the Cross Cultural Youth Group, which is designed to help city residents interact with people from Joy Church. Pastor Cuevas Walker, as director, also visits schools and mentors youth. This year, they donated 144 backpacks to school children. “This church is a unifying force in the community, because many churches catch the vision and want to help in various ways,” Greta explained. The James Place Addiction Program, a 12-step Freedom in Christ program, helps people with any form of addiction. The Resource Room offers computer training, life skills training, Bible study, and instruction on cooking and home-making. James is excited about the possibility of eventually offering a GED program, and other resources such as assistance on resume and job applications, personal defense for women, and handgun safety for children. While Joy Community Church’s heart is in the city, its reach extends to Haiti as the sole support of an orphanage. This is a country where 40% of children are enslaved in some way. A church in Massena, NY had requested that BCM send a missionary to work with children in the North Country. Martha Mandaville answered the call, and immediately set up a Bible club, release time classes, and arranged youth rallies. Another missionary couple, Herb and Phyllis Spence, worked with Mandaville, and after Phyllis died, Herb carried on in her stead. In line with BCM’s ministry of evangelism, discipleship, leadership training, and teaching the Bible, the Spence’s wanted to reach even more children. They created a Christian camp for kids and a retreat center for adults in 1974, and named it after Martha Mandaville. Whether you’re six or sixty years old, Mandaville Camp and Retreat Center offers something for everyone throughout the year. From January through March, summer campers return for overnight retreats and winter fun. Emmett finds these events are a great “way to get summer campers back and follow through with them, and see how they are doing in their In the same vein, Mandaville hosts the Department of Environmental Conservation’s bow hunter/trapper education course. Through that DEC contact, the New York State Trapper Association came aboard, and sponsors its annual week-end camp at Mandaville. These events offer Emmett the opportunity to talk about who they are and what they do; invite people to take the available literature home, or ask any questions they may have about Jesus. challenged to step up and take on additional responsibilities.” After initially introducing this concept at Mandaville, a new director for this program tweaked it into an intense 3 week experience, after which many “graduates” go on to become counselors, or even camp program directors. Teens develop leadership skills, and hone their talents and spiritual gifts which they then plug into their local churches. * Exciting, Christ Centered Programs • Guys in July • Girls in August Nerf Guns, Archery, Canoeing, Climbing Tower, Airsoft, Paintball, Photography, Dance, etc. * Retreats & Weekend Events: Sept - June “It’s neat to see the fruit of that program in Continued on page B10 www.CampHickoryHill.org However, it’s the summer camp that buzzes with activity for all age groups. There is the Base Camp’s ‘Leadership Mountain’ that grew out of Emmett’s own experience in the 1980’s, when he was program director of a leadership training and development program at a Rhode Island camp. “I remember it well. Duffield Conferences” to honor Reverend J.R. Duffield of Olean, New York. The clergyman, who passed away the previous year, had been a leader in creating the conferences as a venue to minister to young people. The youth programs continued at that site until the late 1940s when a new property was evaluated for development. Sensing God’s leading, the governing Presbytery gave the move a green light and the camp found itself relocated and formally dedicated in October of the following year, though it had actually been in use the preceding summer. Accordingly, Camp Duffield has been serving campers of all ages, economic situations, and backgrounds since 1950, enabling them to appreciate the sights and sounds of God’s beautiful creation. And to this day they continue the tradition of providing a supportive Christian environment where imaginations, life skills, and a sense of community are fostered. Their stated mission is to know Jesus Christ and make Him known through nurturing individual growth in faith, strengthening family relationships, and building communities of love, care, and acceptance. In late 2007 the camp was sold to Camp Duffield Inc., an offshoot group that began running it in the summer of 2008. They are a nondenominational organization that is deeply sensitive to the convictions embraced by all Christian persuasions, and recognized as a 501(c) 3 non-profit business structure. Mrs. Mary Owens, who sat on the board some five years and was its president for three, explained that because Camp Duffield is not affiliated with or supported by a specific denomination, it has instead garnered considerable support from the love and commitment of former campers and their families. “We have no base to draw from,” Mrs. Owens explained. “People who began as campers at Camp Duffield now volunteer and CAMPMEETING 2015 July 2rd thru the 5th FREE Camp! We really appreciate that connection and want to keep it going through the generations.” One former camper’s life was so touched through their camping experiences that they recently gave a very large donation making it possible for the camp to offer a scholarship to anyone who wishes to attend. Additionally, though capably running a facility as vast as Camp Duffield demands quality, knowledgeable, and hard-working staff, compliance with a number of regulatory mandates, and just as much paperwork as footwork, they actually have just two paid staffers. Owens is brimming with gratitude as the excellence of the camping experience rises to the excellence of its people. “There are unbelievable man-hours put in to keep up the camp,” she says. “We have volunteer medical staff, cooks, and counselors, and even have an engineer, geologist, and teachers. We’re blessed with a lot of professional people and they come from very different backgrounds from all over Western New York.” Mrs. Owens, whose background as a pediatric nurse and youth director make her perfectly qualified to help lead Camp Duffield, notes that theirs is one of the few camps that accepts people over 18 years-old. “We have a lot of return campers,” she observes, “each kid has a place to go where you can be accepted, everybody’s accepted.” Duffield’s attendance continues to consistently grow with some 50-60 younger kids during the first week and 25-30 teens the second week, and on it goes. “The kids want to keep coming,” says Owens, “we do quite a program and really bring them into nature.” She continued, “Watching animals on National Geographic is great, but it’s not the same as interacting with wildlife, animals, and even insects. They get to actually experience living things — we even make a terrarium every year and then take it apart and let the creatures go.” In addition to weekends or weeks that are Free horseback rides; bounce house, slip-n-slide; volleyball or some other sport, camp fires and Heavenly Worship. It’s a fantastic introduction to the camping life! They also have “Music Camp” for 3rd through 8th Graders. While including all the usual camp activities such as campfires, swimming, and lots of games, Music Camp is a matchless experience for those who love to sing, dance, and perform. The same age-group can also take advantage of “Science and Nature Camp,” which provides an exceptional opportunity to explore nature through experiments and hands-on activities. Whether it’s new campers discovering the woods, learning about the pond from a frog’s perspective, or studying the stars, creation is viewed from a whole new perspective. Additionally, return science-campers can be found dabbling in chemistry, geology, ecology, and much more — days are spent learning about God’s world through the eyes of a scientist while, again, fitting in time for swimming, hiking, and singing. Because teenagers seem to walk in two worlds and embrace a completely alternate reality at times, Camp Duffield has created “Night Owl Camp.” Affectionately known as a teenagers dream schedule because participants stay up late and sleep in late, it includes all the standard camp amenities but jump-starts the day with late night games, hikes, and campfires. Among the more novel formats and ministry tools Camp Duffield has developed, is their “Single Parent/Blended Family Camp.” Embracing all families with arms wide open wherever they may be on the single-parent journey, the staff strives to offer love, hope, and acceptance through an exceptional camping experience geared to the unique challenges faced by Continued on page B6 B5 The Good News CAMP-Of-The-WOODS Offers Year-Round Family Fun In A Safe, Christian Environment By Pat Shea When is a camp more than just a camp? When it is CAMP-of-the-WOODS, answers Steve Tamm, vice president of operations and marketing for the Christian Family Resort and Conference Center in Speculator, New York. “CAMP-of-the-WOODS is unlike any other camp or conference center because we are a year-round multi-faceted ministry that has five different ministry arms: Summer Season, Conference Season, Tapawingo (an island camp for girls), LIFT (Leaders in Further Training), and our Missions Program,” stated Tamm. “Being nestled away in the Southern Adirondacks allows for groups to get away from everything at home and to be more in touch with what God is trying to teach them.” The resort and conference center’s mission is to “present the Biblical truths of Jesus Christ, to develop Christian leaders, to strengthen the faith of individuals and families, and to promote global evangelism.” Not to mention creating wonderful memories that will last a lifetime for attendees. CAMP-of-the-WOODS was destined to become a spiritual resort. Founder, George “Pop” Tibbitts wanted to create “a haven for spiritual refreshment,” and purchased the property in 1900. The facility operates during two distinct seasons: the summer season that runs from late June through Labor Day and the resort’s conference season that runs from Labor Day through Mid-June. During the summer season, the resort hosts 10 one-week family focused vacations. During these vacations internationally renowned Chris- Houghton College Graduates Class of 2015 (Houghton, NY) - On May 9, Houghton College celebrated the graduation of the class of 2015 along with family, friends, faculty, staff, administrators, the board of trustees and members of the Class of 1965. The morning presented with a warm sun and a perfect light breeze as 228 of the 244 graduates marched across the campus quad towards Wesley Chapel led by the rhythmic marching sounds of Andrew Hutton’s ’18 bagpipes. As these graduates enter the commencement ceremony, they will be joining the ranks of the other 22,000-plus Houghton alumni throughout the world. President Shirley Mullen ’76 addressed the crowd, “Commencement marks the occasion when our graduates move to a new stage in their journey of preparing to lead and labor effectively as agents of hope and transformation in the church and in the world in this turbulent 21st century.” Photo by CAMP-of-the-WOODS During the resort’s last conference season over 8,000 attendees participated in a host of retreats geared for families, couples, men, women and organizations. tian speakers are brought in for adults to listen to while their children concurrently go to ageappropriate Christian education (for grades kindergarten through senior year in high school). But there’s more to the vacation than just education and speakers, there are activities planned during the day, on-site and off-site, such as canoe trips, hikes, rock climbing, various competitions, weekly carnivals and much more. “Given our long history,” explains Tamm, “we are blessed to often have multi-generational families visit together at one time. It’s not unusual for us to host families of two, three, or even four generations here.” During conference season the resort acts as a venue for churches and Christian organizations to hold various retreats and conferences. During the resort’s last conference season over 8,000 attendees participated in a host of retreats geared for families, couples, men, women and organizations. Groups as small as eight or as large as 800 can be accommodated at the facility, and on most weekends the facility can host 150-350 attendees. During conference season, the designated groups utilize the resort and conference center’s lodging, conference rooms, recreational options and dining facilities, but bring their own speakers and plan their own events. It is also during conference season the resort hosts two of its most popular events: a New Year’s Eve and Presidents’ Day retreat for families or individuals to come and enjoy the facilities. The New Year’s celebration at CAMP-ofthe-WOODS, offers families and individuals a Christian alternative to celebrate the beginning of the New Year. In addition to meaningful messages, there are fun activities including horsedrawn sleigh rides, snowshoe/cross-country ski excursions, ice-skating, tubing, climbing wall, basketball, volleyball, a family game room and more! A highlight of the event is the resort’s New Year’s Eve multi-course, buffet-style fine dining. The CAMP-in-the-WOODS annual Presidents’ Day Weekend offers meaningful fellowship, worship, and fun. Attendees can enjoy all the wonderful activities offered during the New Year’s celebration, plus snowshoeing, downhill and cross-country skiing. You are moving on; the time you have had here is gone,” commented Crouch. “You do know this is not your last graduation. This is actually a rehearsal for the real graduation, the real commencement, the real beginning… live everything, discovering in your joys and your loss, achievement and failures… keep on doing the things you have learned, heard and seen… and the God of peace will be with you.” The class gift of a living Christmas tree was presented by Luke Lauer ’15 on behalf of the class of 2015. President Mullen then presented the Houghton Medal to Dr. Paul Pang, a 1964 Houghton graduate. President Mullen remarked that the Houghton Medal is presented at Commencement to a person who “has lived the kind of life that we as Houghton alumni are called to live in the world. Everyone truly becomes like a big family.” Asbury Camp & Retreat Center - The Right Place For The Genuine Christian Hospitality! Continued from page A1 As part of the Upper New York Camp and Retreat Ministries, which has six camp and retreat centers throughout New York State, Asbury Camp is owned and operated by the Upper New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, which is comprised of over 900 churches in Upstate New York with 168,000 members. “One of the hallmarks of Asbury is the genuine Christian hospitality that we offer to every individual that steps foot on the property,” stated David Riddell, director for Asbury Camp & Retreat Center, and marketing coordinator for the UNY Camp & Retreat Ministries. “Whether it’s a day meeting, an evening event, an overnight retreat or a week-long program, we believe in making every moment count for each person.” Photo by Camp Duffield And finally, one of the most distinctive expressions of God’s love, is their “Challenge Camp.” Designed expressly for developmentally disabled adults, Camp Duffield’s experienced staff provides an unrivaled camping experience for mentally handicapped adults. While centering on the usual camping pursuits, the program for these very special people offers an unusual activity roster that includes campfire sing-a-longs, swimming, fishing, bingo, theatre in the woods, crafts, camp Olympics, and a talent show. In short, it is a rare and wonderful weeks’ worth of grand and unusual experiences. Asbury offers something for all ages and groups of all sizes. Once thought of primarily as a summer camp, Asbury is proud of the strides that it has made in the past few years to partner with churches and organizations and turn the facility into a premier retreat and conference center destination. “In 2010, our board and leadership made a strategic decision to power down our traditional summer camp program and instead focus on providing more spaces for our churches and groups to host their meetings and retreats,” stated Riddell. “That transition was a hard transition for families, but with camper numbers declining over the previous decade by over 70 percent, we had to shift our focus.” That shift to hosting more conferences and retreats proved to be a wise one. In 2014, Asbury served over 135 different groups, over 5,000 people and over 13,000 plates of food. Over 80 percent of the revenue generated for the camp now comes from guest groups; 10 percent is generated from programs that Asbury runs; and 10 percent is generated by donations. Photo by Camp Duffield “They just steal your heart,” Owens says, “the hard work and volunteers are just amazing.” On top of the conventional summer camp schedule, Camp Duffield also offers men’s and women’s retreats as well as an alumni reunion retreat. “I believe that Camp Duffield is a very special place,” says Mrs. Owens. “It’s a place where children can be children and families can come together. People find a space that takes them out of our hurried world.” For more information visit www.campduffield.net or call (716) 877-0581. We typically host two-to-three small groups of 20 – 25 guests at a time. This allows us to focus on each group individually.” To help prepare for guests, Asbury has a guest services team that works hard in making sure that every group has a successful program. “We believe that this team is unique,” explained Riddell. “We don’t simply book a group initially and then talk with them when they arrive on site. We remain in constant communication leading up to the retreat, and even after, to ensure that everything was what they had expected and needed.” Sue Russell, the assistant director for As- Photo by Asbury Camp & Retreat Center David Riddell, director for Asbury Camp & Retreat Center with his wife and daughter. bury and a Deacon in the United Methodist Church, works with local retreat facilitators to develop unique programs that appeal to a wide audience. Just a few of the retreats running for Summer 2015 include: “Together Time, a family retreat” scheduled for July 13-15; “Reach Out: Community Mission Experience,” scheduled for July 19-23; and the Asbury Express summer camp programs scheduled for July 2629 for ages 7-9 and 10-12, and August 2-5 for ages 13-19. nine team members. In the summer months the staff expands to include eight to 10 summer ministry team members that are comprised mainly of college-age students. Although Asbury is operated by the United Methodist Church, all of the center’s programs and events are open to the public. There are also seven seasonal summer cabins, ideal for summer camp programs, youth or college retreats. Each cabin has a bathroom inside and offers dormitory bunk style accommodations with a total overnight sleeping capacity of 150. “It is our hope to continue to develop new programs and events for individuals and groups to strengthen their relationship with God through a retreat experience,” stated Riddell. “That is why Asbury works hard to provide unique experiences, whether it is a women’s retreat, family retreat or a specialty retreat like photography or a contemplative prayer retreat.” The retreat programs are planned out approximately two years in advance and include a wide variety of activities as well as lodging and hearty meals. “Our staff strives to make each meal delicious and in the summer months we offer local produce options and serve a lot of fresh and healthy options,” stated Riddell. “An example for breakfast this past weekend included buckwheat blueberry pancakes and buttermilk pancakes, served with our fresh maple syrup processed from our own maple trees on the property, along with a fresh fruit salad with honey and lime, oatmeal, yogurt and fresh berries. For dinner we served a roasted turkey with red roasted mashed potatoes, homemade country style stuffing and honey glazed carrots and chocolate cheesecake shooters for dessert!” For guests with dietary needs or restrictions, Asbury’s food service team and manager work together with the guest to make sure their needs are met throughout their stay. “We serve many guests who are vegan, vegetarian, lactose/ dairy-free and gluten-free or have allergies,” explained Riddell. In addition to the food service team and guest services team, Asbury has a year round staff of In regards to lodging, Asbury offers two retreat lodges that have motel-style accommodations to sleep up to 70 guests, meeting rooms, WiFi throughout the facility, high-speed internet access, flat screen televisions and audio/video equipment. Activities are plentiful at Ashbury. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the facility offers an outdoor heated swimming pool, complete with water activities such as a water slide, and basketball, and lounge furniture for guests to enjoy. Basketball, Soccer, 4 Square, Tetherball and many other outdoor sport activities are also available. For guests that enjoy the water, Asbury waterfront hosts a large sundeck that goes out over Silver Lake, a favorite spot for worship, bible study and meditation. There is also kayaking, canoeing, water tubing and fishing. Looking toward the future, Riddell has plans to create more spaces and places on the property for guests to explore and enjoy nature. This summer, in addition to the outdoor gazebo and gardens, an outdoor prayer labyrinth will be added for guests to enjoy. “While we strive to have a premier retreat facility we also want to offer opportunities for guests to encounter God in new ways that they may not have experienced before,” stated Riddell. “God has continued to bless our staff and ministry in the work that we do. We have faced many challenges over the past couple of years in developing Asbury into a premier Christian retreat center, and without God’s help, we would have not been able to accomplish these great things.” For more information on Asbury Camp & Retreat Center or to view a complete listing of upcoming retreats, visit www.asburyuny.org. Back in 1787, the framers of the U.S. Constitution foresaw the need to establish a contingency plan in the event of a sitting president’s death, disability, or resignation, and thus the office of the vice president was born. This time-tested succession plan helps preserve leadership, provide stability, and ensure continued governance. Your company deserves the same security. All business owners need to address continuation because death is inevitable, disability is possible, and retirement is desirable. On the occasion of any of these events, a business succession plan provides your co-owners, management team, employees, and family members a blueprint for continuing operations. With a business succession plan, you can help secure the future of your business, minimize estate taxes, and maximize the wealth passed on to the next generation. To be successful, you need to examine your immediate, intermediate, and longterm goals for both your family and your business. Developing an Exit Strategy One of the first planning steps is deciding on a successor. If you wish to keep ownership and control of your business within your family, you will need to assess your family members’ interests and qualifications in light of your company’s needs to determine who will participate and in what capacity. Business owners often must decide how to fairly compensate those who will work for the company, as well as nonparticipating family members. If you expect unrelated parties to carry on the business, you will need to meet with the key people for in-depth discussions about the company and its future. Communication is essential. Everyone involved from family to management should have a clear understanding of the transition process and the time frame involved. With a timeline in place, it is possible to finetune your plan based on the level of involvement you wish to have in the company and the future you envision for your business. Because it may have taken years or decades for you to build your company to its current level of success, your successor will most likely need time to get up to speed. To teach the next generation, many owners foster mentoring relationships that immerse successors in the day-to-day operations. Valuating Your Business When you have a sense of direction for your business, it’s time to develop the appropriate tax and financial strategies for both the short and long term. One important planning step will be valuating your business—essentially estimating the value of your company. There are many valuation methods, and depending on your situation, one technique may be more appropriate than another. The common goal for business owners who are selling their businesses is to reach a valuation that fairly compensates the owner for his or her interest, while making the price attractive to the potential buyer. Profit may be less of a concern for owners who are passing a business to children. For income, estate, and gift tax purposes, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is interested in having the business fairly priced. This is especially important if a related party is at the other end of the transaction. When considering valuations, the IRS generally looks at the nature and history of the business, the economic outlook for the business’s industry, how assets and earnings are being valued, the existence of intangible assets, and the selling price of comparable businesses using, if possible, industry formulas. Consider Your Transfer Options Owners have a variety of options to transfer ownership, and the right strategy for you depends on your specific situation, considering factors such as your personal financial and tax situation, your business’s current form of ownership (sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, etc.), and the future owners (family, employees, third party, etc.). There are succession tools and techniques that can help make passing the torch both financially rewarding and tax efficient. Some of the possibilities include selling the business outright, making gifts of business interest over time, establishing a family limited partnership (FLP), creating a trust, or transferring ownership to employees. One planning tool for arranging the disposition of an owner’s business interest is a buy-sell agreement. This is a contract between two or more parties, whereupon a triggering event such as death, disability, or retirement, one party has an obligation to buy an interest in the company while the other party has an obligation to sell. It obligates the owner’s estate to sell his or her shares for a predetermined price to partners or shareholders (a cross-purchase agreement), to the business itself (an entity agreement), or to both (a hybrid agreement). Although a buy-sell agreement can help ensure that your business will remain with your family or business partners, it is essential that sufficient funds are available to fulfill the commitments of the agreement. There are a variety of options for funding buy-sells, from employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) to life insurance, and again, the best choice will depend on the parties involved. Successful continuation is a challenge for small businesses. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA, 2010 at http:// www.sba.gov/gopher/Business-Development/ Success-Series/Vol7/success.txt), 70% of familyrun businesses fail to survive in the second generation. Only 15% succeed into the third generation. For scheduled departures such as retirement, a succession plan can help ensure smooth operations during the time of transition, as well as facilitate the transfer of ownership. In times of crisis, it can be the foundation for continued success. Rick Krempin is a Registered Representative and Life Insurance Professional. B10 The Good News Camp Mandaville Offering Bible-Based Camping And Retreats Continued from page B3 the lives of these young people,” Emmett said. Among the various on site camps, the Pioneer Boys Camp is one of Emmett’s favorites. Boys from 5th to 8th grade, spend a week in a wilderness area. They gain outdoor living skills and complete projects, such as constructing Adirondack lean-tos, or building bridges over creeks. Because they use real tools, three to four staff members work closely with 10-12 campers. This Summer, Niagara Shores Is All About Making Connections! By Tom Turley Niagara Shores summer programming is organized to connect three aspects of ministry at once. The Sunday Night Services offer Christians a time to gather, learn from pastors, and worship God in fellowship. The Family Fireworks Nights lets the public see the campus, meet new people, and see the love of Christ in a causal atmosphere. Both of these programs are family-friendly and are a great option for parents and kids to kick back, relax, and enjoy time together in a free and safe environment. They’re also an opportunity to invite your friends and neighbors for a fun-filled evening this summer! Connecting with other Christians Sunday Night Services provide Christians with an opportunity for fellowship with Christians who attend other churches. By doing this Niagara Shores hopes to broaden the Church body, as well as develop relationships and community between local churches and congregations. Photo by Mandaville Camp First through third graders attend Primary Summer Camp. It’s a shorter week, Monday through Thursday, for these kids who are “supercharged, full of energy and just want to have fun.” The camper to staff ratio is 3:1, as the kids sleep in dorms and enjoy cookouts. When asked if there were problems with homesickness, Emmett said the parents seem to have a harder time leaving their children than children missing home. “We have to do more to keep them busy. If done right, we will see them come back... It’s fun to see the younger age group move up through the ranks.” Among the on site facilities, the Creation Center evolved from a just having a tarp cover to its current 24 by 32 foot structure. A local taxidermist once donated specimens such as a white-tailed deer, a turkey, beaver, and coyote to the Center. “It’s like walking into a North Country woods,” Emmett said. Campers study the animals and note their observations. They go on rambles to the near-by swamp, visit a beaver lodge, and study how God’s creatures do what they do. It’s easy to hear Emmett’s enthusiasm as he describes his life. Although he had never gone to camp as a child, God redirected him when he came to know Jesus at age 23. Always athletic, with a love for the outdoors, he applied to a Christina Liberal Arts school in Rhode Island to major in recreation. When he felt God wanted him to help kids avoid some of the traps he had fallen into, Emmett transferred to Houghton College, narrowing his focus to outdoor recreation. He met his wife when he worked at a wilderness therapeutic camp in North Carolina. In February 2001, Mandaville faced closure because the Spence’s, in their 80s, could no longer manage the camp full time. The Emmetts were planning a mission trip to Sri Lanka when BCM’s offered them the directorship of the camp. They moved in a month later. While Mandaville Camp is now going strong, Emmett believes “the key to our effectiveness is to come along side local, Bible-believing churches,” although many are small and struggling. To build relationships and show the value of the camp and retreat experience, Emmett visits a church outside their immediate area once a month. Over the next five years, they hope to establish relationships with five to ten new churches, and expand their reach to a 100 mile radius. For more information about Mandaville Camp and Retreat Center, go to www.mandaville.org. Photo by Niagara Shores Niagara Shores Lake Front RV & Tent sites. is to provide Christians with an opportunity to minister to non-Christians in their lives by developing meaningful friendships. A lot can happen during a game of mini-golf! Connecting to the Family School might be out, but busy family schedules don’t stop. Summer time offers many recreation-al activities, but few are as important and as special as family time. The simple act of fishing, camping, or just sitting by a fire completely unplugged and focused on each other is one of the most wonderful life experiences. The staff at Niagara Shores loves to see families connecting and having adventures together. Actually, a common theme of the summer programing is family: Family Fireworks nights, A Vendor/Craft Fair with bounce house and other games, Family Camp, Lake Front RV and Tent camping, and even Sunday Night services. Niagara Shores is all about connecting families to fun, fellowship, and ultimately to the Lord. Why are Connections Important? Creating a place for fellowship and community is not only a biblical principal, but also a response to a current issue in society. As society becomes more plugged in people become less personally connected. This leaves many individuals searching for a place to belong and have authentic rela-tionships. Connecting the Community Summer time also provides an ideal time for community outreach ministry since most people are ready to unplug, unwind, and enjoy nature after a long winter. Niagara Shores’ location on Lake Ontario combined with the local community’s fireworks programing gives them the opportunity to reach an audience that is usually hard to reach. During the fireworks, when the hamlet is crowded, Niagara Shores offers lake front seating as well as free family activities before the fireworks start. Come on out! Join us as we show the love of Christ to everyone we meet. The Family Fireworks nights are a great opportunity to invite friends, family, neighbors, anyone to have fun and to see an example of Christ love and Christian life. While on campus, they will have a chance to see other fun programs as well as youth and family camps. One of the goals of these weekly family nights The Gospel offers eternal hope, but also immediate hope and friendship. The Church body pro-vides safety, love, encouragement, and honest fun. The opportunity to belong and develop au-thentic relationships in the Church family is special and unique. Niagara Shores desires to open the doors this summer to make new connections within local churches, within the community, and within families. So What Are These Events?! Join us Sunday nights by the Lake to enjoy great preaching and music! Services begin at 6:30 PM. Free child care service is available. Come early and bring a picnic or enjoy a game of mini-golf! Parker Jonathan To Perform In Rochester On September 11 By Joyce Spamer A lot of you may remember Parker Jonathan and if you don’t remember him you will want to hear him in Concert on Friday night September 11, 2015. Parker grow up in the Indiana reservation of Tuscarora but now resides in Bremen, Ga. Twenty years ago Kingsmen Quartet hired him as their new member and he sang next to Tim Surrett, Randy Miller and Ray Dean Reese. He is now married to his beautiful wife Paula and they now sing together in the group called The Jonathan Trio. You say “Trio”? Yes The Jonathan Trio consists of Parker, his wife and lead/tenor singer Eric Dunson. Keyboardist Jacob Pitts and Eric’s brother Chris Dunson is sound engineer for the group. Eric and Jacob both attend the same church as the Jonathans and are also married with families. Parker says Paula sang with her twin sister during the early 90’s but it was a total surprise to him to learn of her vocal talent. The Jonathan Trio Together they embark on a musical journey that is more than just great harmonies and wonderful songs. The message in the songs are what drive these four to sacrifice time from home in spreading the good news. Parker says, “It doesn’t matter if we sing on the largest concert stages or the biggest churches in the country. Our priority is that someone is encouraged and blessed, and ultimately that someone might come to know personally this Savior we sing about. First of all Parker would like to make it clear that he is not back on the road full time. Their trio venture is strictly a part-time, weekend thing, which somewhat limits the travel op- Visit us online at www.TheGoodNewsNewYork.com portunities. Parker has worked in a television production studio to driving tour buses for various artists. He has driven for artists such as Carrie Underwood, Wayne Newton and Jusas Priest. Experts tell us that most people will have at least 10 different careers in their lifetime. Parker realized it was time to move on to another stage in his life. “Our weekends are open for ministry opportunities and right now that is where we feel God wants us.” Paula Jonathan is also employed with an attorney in midtown Atlanta. When Parker left the Kingsmen, which was actually Carolina Boys at that time, he says he was burned out. “I disliked always having to feel like we had to be better than the group that just came off stage. It was tough what we had to follow groups like the McKamey’s or the Dove Brothers and many others. SGNY is proud to bring The Jonathan Trio to United Methodist in North Chili at 2200 Westside Drive Rochester, New York 14624. The concert will begin at 7:00 PM and tickets are only $12 in advance or $15 at the door. MJ16 Houghton College Education Students Immerse Themselves Into Buffalo’s Urban Public Schools (Houghton, NY) - Houghton College students, in partnership with Urban Advocacy, engaged in service-learning projects at four key sites across the city of Buffalo, N.Y., on May 16, during their two-week immersion experience in the urban schools of Buffalo. Many of these projects involved assisting ministries that support refugees. Each May, Houghton College sophomorelevel education students engage in the twoweek experience through a Mayterm course called Teaching in Urban America taught by Dr. Cathy Freytag, Associate Dean for Education at Houghton College. During this time, students devote eight days to assisting teachers in public and charter schools in the heart of the city and spend their evenings engaged in seminar discussions with professors, peers and urban educators on topics such as culture, race, poverty and diversity. “It was exciting for me to see just how much this immersion experience in the city stretched these future teachers. In just a few short days, they were challenged to dissect their own biases and preconceived notions about urban poverty, diverse student populations and cultural differ- ence,” commented Freytag. “Each student in the course demonstrated a willingness and responsivity to be the kind of teacher, and community member, that will reach out and connect with each learner or neighbor right where they are. Encountering difference has enhanced these young teachers in remarkable ways!” In recent years, Buffalo has drawn thousands of refugees from across the globe, and numerous faith-based agencies have come to the aid of these new immigrants. Houghton alumni Steve and Ruth (Woolsey) Strand, who now serve with Urban Advocacy, a ministry of the Western New York District of the Wesleyan Church, helped to orchestrate the service opportunities at four sites across the city. At Vive La Casa, under the direction of Jericho Road Ministries, students learned about the challenges faced by families seeking asylum from persecution and oppression in their home countries as they shared a meal with the residents and helped to clean and organize closets and playrooms. We Need Your Help! Among their more recent pursuits is an effort to plant churches throughout the United States and Canada. To date the strategy has spawned several new fellowships thriving throughout Pennsylvania, Florida, Kansas, and Western New York with their number expected to increase as the Lord leads. This First World thrust, with its domestic investment, reflects Dr. Albrecht and GOM’s passion for America and Canada to be supported in their unique call and role in the Great Commission. “The base is eroding,” observes Albrecht, “and if we don’t strengthen the base, there won’t be any missions.” Thus, in its two inaugural nations, both divinely gifted with unprecedented abundance, GOM’s establishment of churches dedicated to sending and supporting missionaries has become the fulcrum of the group’s latest visionary thrust and missionary strategy. Additionally, Global Outreach Mission has merged with the Niagara Bible Conference, a 35 acre campground located in Olcott, New York. And while the facility’s name is soon to become Niagara Shores, its use as a ministry tool will continue to grow as it is engaged for conferences, discipleship programs, lodging missionaries, and much more… Global Outreach Mission’s expansion into its home turf is really nothing more than the ministry being true to itself and its calling. “We’ve always Photo by Global Outreach Mission With more than 30 years serving GOM, Dr. Albrecht assumed its presidency in 2003 upon Dr. Blackwood’s departure, and continues to help expand its vision to connect Christians with their calling. been into evangelism and church planting,” observes Dr. Albrecht, it’s our basic spiritual DNA.” If there is an axis that GOM’s evangelistic world turns on, however, it is practical altruistic endeavors that express the love of God and make its message more than words. “Humanitarian projects are the best ways to open doors,” says Albrecht. Consequently, the group has a long, storied history of constructing churches, housing, schools; they do medical work in 10-15 countries, set up dental clinics, and more… And they do it all through people — vulnerable, loving, and committed Christian missionaries who become God’s hands that reach, feet that go, and His voice that calls as they pour themselves out to fulfill Christ’s mandate to, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15). Supporting short and long term projects, GOM is getting the job done. “Believers in Western New York have been a great help,” says Albrecht. “They’ve traveled overseas, done medical projects, helped with well projects, and trained kids in schools.” However, the need is always there just as Jesus said it would be, “The poor you always have with you,” (Matthew 26:11). Consequently, GOM is always looking for ways and resources to help meet it. “We’re looking for partners,” Dr. Albrecht explains, “for people to come along side with us to get the Gospel out and plant churches and help those who need help.” GOM attracts and cultivates people and projects with an eternal perspective, anchoring their earthly efforts in an everlasting outcome. And while they invest a substantial percentage of their material resources to meet human need, they do so with their eye on the prize of a heavenly return on that investment. It’s a twoedged sword that expresses love in a tangible manner to serve others while doing so in a way that points people to the ultimate expression of God’s love — Christ dying for the salvation of their souls. “Statistics tell us that the average believer here invests roughly 2.5 percent of their money for Christian purposes,” Albrecht notes. Visit us online at www.TheGoodNewsNewYork.com “And with that 2.5 percent a lot of really important stuff happens.” And that “stuff” is a big deal! Sometimes it is the “stuff” found on GOM sponsored radio broadcasts that reaches literally thousands of people. Sometimes it’s the “stuff” found streaming from the eyes of tribal chiefs who have heard the Gospel for the first time at the dedication of the GOM sponsored well standing in the center of their village. They look on in awe completely humbled that a group of men came thousands of miles to give them a source of fresh water in the name of Jesus, and then explain that they can freely receive living water. Other times it is the “stuff” taught in a village school freely constructed for some 300 students but now making room for one thousand kids, eager to learn. And whether it is the “stuff” necessary to set up dental and medical clinics, dig wells, construct schools, translate the Bible, or feed children, it is the “stuff” of dreams for untold hungry hearts and impoverished people that God loves. Dr. Albrecht continues, “Suppose that 2.5 percent of Christian income donated for God’s work was 10 percent; we would have four times the impact around the world and magnify the reach of the Gospel four times more than it is.” For Brian Albrecht and the team at Global Outreach Mission, the Great Commission is more than theology. It is a sacrificial, yet enriching lifestyle that lives out the Lord’s dream to overcome the world’s nightmares. Building treasure in heaven isn’t a poetic metaphor or spiritual concept for GOM — it is a very present eternal reality walked out in the love of God. “I enjoy my work,” says Albrecht, “I enjoy seeing people come to Christ. We want to do the best we can with the time we have left to serve the Lord Jesus.” For more information about Global Outreach Mission, visit www.missiongo.org, or call their office at (716) 688-5048.
