Fashion publicist Ed Filipowski (standing) and Barneys New York CEO Mark Lee in the living room of their
Manhattan penthouse with their French beagles, Sam and Dudley.
Renovated by architect Mark Janson of Janson Goldstein, the couple’s apartment broadcasts a rugged
sense of chic. In the living room, the vintage Jens Risom chair and ottoman at right are upholstered in
gray flannel, the Erwin-Lambeth sofas are from Noho Modern and clad in Ultrasuede by KnollTextiles, and
the 1970s cube chairs are dressed in parrot-green velvet. A David Hicks–designed rug from Stark Carpet
covers the floor.
The cocktail tables, two made from slabs of selenite from Blackman Cruz, one made of teak, feature
chrome bases.
A vintage Knoll bench sits in a corner of the living room, beneath a fanciful painting of a formal parterre,
and a ’70s metal-studded work from Galerie Camoin Demachy; the abstract canvas is ’50s French.
Bookshelves by Janson Goldstein in the library frame a view of the living room. The ’40s Italian cocktail
table was found at Mondo Cane, and the flooring is stained European oak.
Also in the library, a Susan Derges photograph is displayed against a Hicks for Lee Jofa wall covering;
the Hans J. Wegner sofa is accented by pillows made of Holly Hunt velvets.
The kitchen cabinets are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Gettysburg Gray, while Sherwin-Williams’s
Ethereal Mood coats the walls. The backsplash is by Artistic Tile, the nickel hardware is by Nanz, and the
light fixture is vintage Moroccan.
Flanking the table in the breakfast area are a sofa covered in a cotton by Holly Hunt and Jules Wabbes
chairs.
The study, with a 1955 Martin Eisler lounge chair; the painting at right is by Stephen Sprouse.
The master bedroom curtains are made of a Holland & Sherry wool felt; the Hicks rug is from Stark
Carpet.
Antique doors were joined to make the headboard.
Marble from Ann Sacks lines Filipowski’s bath, which has a Waterworks sink and fittings and is painted
in Drab by Farrow & Ball.
Lee’s bath is sheathed in Ann Sacks marble and mosaic tiles.
Janson helped his clients reconfigure their penthouse into a generously scaled one-bedroom apartment,
with French doors opening onto the wraparound terrace and the outdoor dining area on the south-facing
side.
