Foto Fanfare is the official publication of N4C, the
Northern California Council of Camera Clubs, a federation of 11 Camera Clubs located in the greater Bay Area.
Its goals are to hold monthly competitions among member clubs and present special

75th Anniversary Conference
Prints will be mounted and no larger than 16 x
20”. There are no restrictions on smaller sizes, but
I would suggest not going below 8 1/2 x 11” including the mount.
Electronic images are not due until August 1
since they do not need hand transmission.
About two weeks ago, all print winners in the
N4C Annual Competition were asked by email to
submit their winning prints to their clubs for collection. In addition, anyone wishing to submit any
other prints may do so as long as they have not
been accepted in past FotoClave competitions. In
fact, you may submit as many prints and electronic
images as you wish. The back of the prints
should have the division, the print title, your
name, camera, club and council prominently
displayed in the upper left corner. Subject
matter should conform to the current PSA definitions. There will also be forms available at your
club for image submission which need to be
turned in with the prints.
Information about how to submit electronic images will be available shortly.
When the prints are turned in on July 13, they
will be distributed for judging to limit the acceptances in each division to 20. No more than two
can be accepted from any one entrant. The prints
will be redistributed at the July 13th meeting to the
following clubs whose job it is to reduce the number of entries to a total of 20:

Color Prints - Marin
Creative Prints - Peninsula
Nature Prints - Livermore Valley
This needs to be completed before the September N4C board meeting. These accepted prints will
go on to a special meeting and will be redistributed to the three councils involved.
N4C will be responsible for the final awards
judging for both color and monochrome prints.

In honor of its 75th Anniversary, the Photographic Society of America will hold its annual conference in Yellowstone National Park. the conference are really
remarkable this year.
PSA has set up the presentations so that a registrant
can go on one to several of daily tours being hosted by
PSA to many of the best known spots throughout the
park.
In addition, there will be special tours by Don Lyon,
Gary Stanley, John Dykstra/Ed Post and, perhaps, Art
Wolfe.
Special presenters include Art Wolfe, Julianne Kost,
George Lepp, John and Barbara Gerlach, and Barry
Wilkins and Jll Sneesby.

FotoClave Programs
Are Announced
October 30 - November 1
Doubletree Hotel, Modesto, CA
The 2009 FotoClave will be hosted this year by SJVCCC and will
be held in Modesto over Halloween weekend, October 30, 31 and
November 1.
What is FotoClave? FotoClave is the not-tobe-missed event for
serious photographers. FotoClave is the premier photography
forum for Central and Northern California. It draws the finest amateur film and digital photographers for a weekend of learning, meeting, and sharing. FotoClave is the San
Joaquin Valley Camera Club Council, SJVCCC; Northern California Council of Camera Clubs, N4C; and CentralCoast Counties Camera Club Council, 6C.
FotoClave features seminars and great speakers covering interesting subjects and techniques in photography. The Friday evening program will feature Annette Bottaro-Walklet and Keith S. Walklet. The Saturday
evening conference Keynote Speaker will be George Lepp, one of North America’s best-known outdoor and
nature photographers.
There will be a FotoClave Competition which will be open to all N4C, 6C, and SJVCCCl members. The 2009
FotoClave will be held at Modesto’s Doubletree Hotel where attendee rooms are priced at $99 plus tax.
Saturday seminars will feature Richard Menzies, Writer, Photographer, Comedian; Marilyn Newton, Photojournalist; Doug Keister, Master Book Publisher; Charles W.Guildner, Master Portrait Maker; and Peter Lang,
Environmentalist and Educator.
Registration for FotoClave is priced at $50 for individuals and $75 for couples. Reservations can also be
made for the Saturday evening dinner and keynote program for $50 and will include a choice of Asiago
Chicken or Herb Crusted Roast (Prime Rib of Beef.)

We have a new delegate from Diablo Valley Camera
Club - Michael Espinoza.
Treasurer’s Report: All clubs have paid dues. Palo Alto
and Photochrome have opted for N4C membership only
and will not compete. Our budget for 2009 predicts a
$2000 shortfall which we will try to make up by running
a fundraising seminar. Our current balance is $9132.81 as
of April 30.
Judges Chair: Although absent, Joe clarified by email
that to receive the most updated Judges List, he should be
emailed with the request ([email protected]) and the List
will be sent via email. It is not located on our website for
privacy reasons.
Competition Committee:
Prints: Gene Morita is having difficulty gettiing judges.
Robin Braunfeld was added to the interclub judges list
and was judging at the May prints competition. Gene suggested that perhaps we weren’t paying the judges
enough. Many clubs pay $35 - $50, while N4C offers $25
for the judging.
Electronic Images Coordinator (Gene Albright) - a
24” monitor, a HP 2475, has been purchased for the
digital competitions and would be used for the first time
at the May judge’s house. The cost was under $600. This is
in lieu of using a projector., The concept is that the images
will be clearer on the monitor and since so few visitors
come to the competitions, a big screen monitor would be
sufficient for viewing.
Most of the clubs have offered to pay for the use of the
Competition Manager program v. 2 written by Larry
Salveson. Contra Costa is using its own program.
Judges Seminar Discussion: - It has been requested
again that we hold a Judges Seminar to train prospective
judges and refresh the ideas of current ones. It was reiterated that most of the material for learning to become a
judge is available on the http://www.n4c.org/N4C%20Comp%20Classes/n4c_definitions.htm website as a
Judges Manual. This is highly recommended for anyone
interested in judging to read; it is also highly recom-
mended that current judges review this material.
It was brought to the Board’s attention that Berkeley
had offered a Judges Class given by Ann Baldwin, an
art teacher. She is planning another one in September.
Perhaps we can open it up to all clubs. Gene A. will look
into that.
Gene is now producing certificates showing the winning photo on each one. He says he has the task automated. This has been met with very positive feedback.
Foto Fanfare: Joan will begin a new feature asking the
makers how some of their winning images were created.
Website(s): Clubs are urged to send information about
seminars, field trips, workshops, etc. that could be open to
a wider membership to our two webmasters for inclusion
on the websites, possibly in the form of a calendar.
FotoClave: We need a director to organize the collection and judging of prints and electronic images for the
FotoClave competition. (Because of the short time line for
prints, Joan took it on as acting Director, working from
the 2007 information submitted by Jan DeLano and
Susan Glasgow. -see page 12). Gene Albright and Gene
Morita offered to help.
Upgrading N4C
Mission Statement: A mission statement was approved by the Board and will be submitted to the clubs as
a separate item.
A short discussion of N4C sponsoring field trips or special workshops ensued. The problem is trying to find the
manpower to handle these. One of the Marin club members would be asked if he would be willing to do this.
Dues Hike
The Board approved a dues hike beginning in 2010 of
$50 for general membership and $25 each for participation in prints and electronic images competitions
Spring 2010 Fundraiser: Probably in May or June. Several names were suggested - Nancy Rotenberg, Charles
Glassner, Brenda Tharpe were mentioned. In addition, we
need to find a better venue that is not too expensive. The
following were suggested and need follow-up:
Mercy High School, Lowell High School, both in San
Francisco, Lesher Center in Walnut Creek, Willows Theater
in Concord and the Rossmoor Auditorium.
There were some problems with the definition of Sequences. Since they are also used in Nature and Journalism electronic images, the definition didn’t seem
adequate or appropriate. A committee consisting of Walt
Braun, Amory Donaldson and Joe Hearst will come up
with a revision, if necessary.

change is very noticeable in the final print. I also burned
the clouds and mist belt to darken them slightly, and add
the final bit of snap to the image.
And there you have the final image. It captured my
original vision for the photograph as well as the emotional impact that I felt that morning.
I would like to end by offering a word of caution. There
are may filters and plug-ins available for Photoshop and
they offer the artist a wonderful variety of tools. However,
they are only tools. I have seen many images on the Internet where photographers have simply applied the filter or
plug-in without having any artistic vision of what the
final image should look like. Initially the results are often
astonishing to a photographer who is used to photo-realistic images. However, if you come back to the image
later you will probably find that it is lacking in vision and
originality. Use these tools wisely to create images that
are original and express your emotions. Only then can
you be considered to be an artist.

Taken at sunset from Mt.Tam in the Observatory parking lot (there are several places on the way to the lot as
well as the one in the lot itself where you can capture this
view)
Two HDR images stitched together using Stitcher Express by Realviz and then cropped to remove trees in the
foreground. I cropped about half off the bottom of the
original two image pano.
Each of the HDR images was created in Photomatix
from eight underlying images shot one stop apart starting at so overexposed the histogram is bunched to the
right to so underexposed hardly anything is visible (histo
is equally bunched to the left). I do very little adjustment in Photoshop after the pano
is stitched -- levels and curves only.
This process tends to lead to garish colors, which
worked this this case ... but doesn't always!
Chilean Naval Officer Braves the Dangerous Ocean
Current to Retrieve Drowning Victim by Tim Szumowski (page 8)
My wife and I were in Vina del Mar, Chili visiting our
daughter who was studying there for a college semester.
On April 6th I was walking back to our hotel after taking
early morning shots of buildings on an abandoned pier
when I noticed a number of police cars parked along the
ocean near this renovated Castle. I ventured out behind
the castle on a paved lookout over the water and saw a
handful of people watching the body of a man floating in
turbulent surf between several huge rocks. As we watched
the current eventually carried the body away from the
rocks into open water closer to shore. Seeing this the
naval officer took of his shoes, emptied his pockets and
ran into the surf to retrieve the victim right under where I
was standing. I took over 40 shots of the ordeal. I chose
this one because it was action oriented, not too graphic
and best conveyed the unfortunate story of what was taking place. I used my Canon 40D with a Canon EF24-105
F4L IS lens. The focal length was 40mm, F/16 at 1/100 sec
with a 200 ISO.

Last October, I went on a Photo tour of Myanmar (Burma) led
by photographer, Nevada Wier. We spent 3 nights at Inle Lake.

Compositionally I loved the photo although it was a bit
dull and lacking in contrast due to the morning light. I always wanted to come back to this photo and try to do
something more interesting with it.
My husband Mark, in addition to being a photographer
is also a member of the East Bay Artists Guild and has
been attempting to find ways to integrate photography
into the more traditional art forms. As a result, we have
been experimenting with a variety of filters and plug-ins
for Photoshop. One of the more intriguing plug-ins is
called Fractalius produced by a company called Redfield.
They make 20 different plug-ins for Photoshop. I decided
to give Fractalius a try for modifying my Misty Morn
photo.
My first decision was what I wanted the final image to
look like. I was actually planning to use this photo to put
on the wall of our living room, replacing an old Impressionist style print that had been hanging there for the past
8 years. Thus, I was looking for a soft, dreamy, semi-abstract look.
The process for producing Misty Morn sounds straight
forward but in reality required many hours of work in Photoshop to tweak the image to give the exact result I was
looking for. I opened the image in Photoshop and duplicated the layer, and then opened Fractalius. When you
open Fractalius you are faced with a preview and 11 slid-
This figure captured the feel of what I wanted to express. However, too much detail had been lost and the sky
was washed out. To bring back some of the detail I applied a layer mask and partially masked out the hiker,
sand, salt water pump house, sky and mist belt. The result
is seen in Figure 3.
At this point the image was starting to come to life but
was still dull. Using Hue/Saturation and Brightness/Contrast layers I was able to make the image pop as shown in
Figure 4 (top of next page).
The image was nearing completion at this point. However, the clouds were blah. I wanted more color, so using
a dappled paint brush set for a very low opacity I painted
some pink into the clouds and mist belt. The difference
may be very hard to see in this reproduction but the subtle

We are trying to get some more information out to
our readers about how some of the first place photographs in the N4C monthly competition were taken.
Korean War Memorial, Washington by Walt

This photo was taken by shooting at a highly polished granite surface that was etched with "memories" of the Korean War. It is directly across a path and
field where about two dozen bronze GI's were placed
as if they were on a scouting mission. and their images are reflected in the image as well.
The Korean War Memorial, in Washington, is located directly across the park from the Vietnam Memorial and just down the path from the WWII
Memorial. All very inspiring.

Sven Nyquist was Ingmar Bergman's cinematographer in several of his movies . He also worked with the
Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky. He did beautiful
moody work and my shot was an attempt at something like his work. I wanted the secondary woman to
add mystery and a touch of sadness to the shot, and
make the viewer wonder about their relationship and
what moment was captured in the image. It was
taken in a designer home in Marin. The primary subject is an artist who does mural painting and trompe
l'oeil touches to housing interiors. The other woman
was helping her and I was there to document some of
their work and also to take some shots of them that I
wanted to - like this one. In keeping with the Bergman
feel, I thought B&W was appropriate for the shot.

In the summer of 2007 my husband Mark and I took
a wonderful trip to Alaska. We spent 4 days in Juneau
and then traveled by train to Denali National Park.
The things that we saw during that trip were awesome. One of my favorite experiences was visiting
Treadwell Mines along Gastineau Channel, adjacent
to Juneau.
We visited the mines early one misty morning.
There were mountains in the background along with
a heavy mist draping across the mountains and channel. In one location there was a clear view of the

outboard motor) down a waterway leading out of the lake to visit
a Pa-O tribe village. We had to obtain a special permit and take a
Pa-O guide with us.
One of our stops was at the Tharkong Pagoda. We were immediately surrounded and followed by a group of children. When we
reached the Reclining Buddha another woman and myself
motioned the children to kneel and pray at the statue. The
children did not speak English and we did not speak their language. I had hoped for one to turn around, but there was no
way to explain that. I have many photos of varying numbers
of children turning around to see what we were doing. I got
lucky when only one turned and quickly snapped the photo.
