A long-time PSA member beginning in 1975, Eleanor (Ellie) Webster, FPSA passed away on August 10 at the age of 83. She was a person who dedicated her life to furthering the art of photography through lectures and personal involvement in many photographic organizations. For PSA, she was the Travel Aides Director from 2002 – 2012 and served as Chair of the Certain Society Awards Committee (now SRA) for the year 1999 – 2000. A member of the Honors Committee from 2004 – 2008, she chaired it in 2007 – 2008. She was also in charge of the Nature Essay Competition for several years and received a Bronze Editorial Star in 2008 for articles she had written for the Journal. Ellie earned her APSA in 1994 for having promoted the arts and sciences of photography through her lectures and travel programs, serving the Society as a District Representative of the Pacific Central Zone and through administrative offices in the Peninsula Camera Club, Northern Californian Council and the Yerba Buena Chapter of PSA. Her FPSA was awarded in 2001 for, among many things, her continuing activity in photographic organizations September 2012 Page 1 of 18 in Northern California and her lectures in travel photography to many audiences. She was chair of the Yerba Buena Chapter from 1997 – 1999, remaining on the Board until 2012, and on the Board of the Northern California Council of Camera Clubs as Club Delegate and President. Her deep commitment to the Peninsula Camera Club included her period as an award winning bulletin Editor and serving four times as the club’s President. One of Ellie’s most enjoyable experiences in her photographic career was organizing 15 Safari Tours to East Africa, where she led many fellow photographers. We will greatly miss her friendly smile and greetings at the many PSA conferences she has attended, as well as her ubiquitous shirts festooned with the African animals she loved to photograph. The treasurer was asked to send a replacement. Roger Johnson is unavailable to judge prints this month. Joan volunteered to do it if her calendar is open. If not, Terry will judge with Ed present. Joan referred people to the instructions in the Judgesʼ Manual on our website. N4C policy was reiterated that one must have judged at the club level before doing so at the council level. September Judges will be John Goyer and Dan Katzman. October judge, Alison Brooks Competition Committee Chairs Prints, Dean McCoy: not present PI, Gene Albright: Re FotoClave: Geneʼs received no prints from Peninsula. DVʼs PI, not in yet. Gene will check again whether heʼs received CCʼs. Foto Fanfare: Amory Donaldson was not present, but it was reported that our newsletter won 1st place in international competition! September 2012 Page 12 of 18 FotoClave Trustee, Joan Field: Update on the Nov 2-4. 2012 Fotoclave at the Doubletree in Modesto: Key speakers are Moose Peterson and Darrell Gulin. Joan is waiting for San Juaquin Valley to put a better flyer on line. 6C is down from 6 clubs to 2 1/2 and therefore is unable to present a FotoClave. Special Programs Chair, Joan Field: We need to decide whether we need a fundraiser in 2012. (Regardless of needing funds, it would be an educational function.) Webmaster, Sam Bersin: not present Unfinished Business: The Website Content Committee will finalize all revised website content after this Board meeting and send all content to our Webmaster, Sam, for implementation. There will be 2 websites: Public: N4C.org For club members only: N4C.photoclubservices.com It was decided that every time the council makes a change to either the Rules or Definitions document, the secretary will not only record the minutes but will also update the document itself. Then the new revision is to be sent back to the council including the webmaster who will then upload the new changes to the website. It was determined that having both the Annual judging and the regular, monthly, interclub judging in January is not a problem. Teri has proposed the following four options for integrating the new PI Monochrome Special Category into our 2013 judging schedule. We will take these suggestions to our members and report their preferences at the Sept 10 council meeting. New Business: N4Cʼs new Travel definition is: A Travel image must express the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its distinctive features or culture in its natural state. There are no geographical limitations. Close-up pictures of people or objects must include distinguishable environment. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping are not permitted. All adjustments must appear natural. Conversion to monochrome is allowed. September 2012 Page 13 of 18 The italicized portion will also replace the modification restriction sentences in the Nature and Journalism definitions. It was also decided to remove the option of “flipping” in the Nature definition. N4Cʼs Tag Line for our website will be: N4C. . . “Promoting Photographic Expression and Education.” The review and voting on the updated N4C Rules document was tabled. Mary questioned whether prints which appear to be mixed media are acceptable. She was requested to bring the artist or at least an example of the work in question to the next meeting so we can decide. Mary asked for our opinion on Berkeleyʼs dilemma as to judgesʻ manipulation of images when they preview them, in order to test out various treatments to suggest to the maker during the meeting. Like the club, those at our meeting were split in our opinions and could not advise on whether manipulations should be allowed. Mary will let us know how the club resolves the issue. Meeting Adjourned at 9:48. Next Board Meeting: Monday, Sept 10th 7:30 p.m. First Methodist Church, 1600 Bancroft, San Leandro. Respectfully submitted, Helen Sweet ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Proposed updating to the N4C Competition Definitions being voted on Monday, September 10th at the N4C Board Meeting … NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COUNCIL OF CAMERA CLUBS Interclub Competition Division Definitions N4C competition definitions Last Modified August 2012 Preamble The following holds for all Competition Divisions The Northern California Council of Camera Clubs subscribes to the Ethics Statement of the Photographic Society of America. Consistent with that Ethics Statement, all images submitted for competition in both Print and Projected Image mediums, and in all Competition Divisions shall originate as photographs by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. By virtue of submitting an entry, the photographer certifies the work as his/her own. No clip art, digital art or photographs other than those made by the entrant may be used in whole or in part in any portion of the image. Images may only be manipulated as noted in individual division definitions. When graphic elements other than photographs created by the entrant are used in an image, photographic content must still predominate. Now that N4C is judging on a monitor rather than a projector, it is more imperative that members use the N4C standard resolution, a maximum of 1600 pixels in width and 1200 pixels in height so that the judges can better determine whether the focus is sharp. Pictorial (P) N4C has adopted the following definition for Pictorial (includes both color and “monochrome”) Pictorial photography is the use of the photographic medium as an art form. The emphasis is on interest, visual impact, composition, and technical excellence. Images in the Pictorial division are not confined to any particular subject, type, or style of photography. Pictorial images may be manipulated in the darkroom, on the computer or in September 2012 Page 14 of 18 the camera in a manner consistent with the standards stated in the preamble to these definitions. The term Pictorial includes color and monochrome images. A monochrome image refers to an image in black and white (grayscale), but also includes images made of tones of a single color. For example, sepia images, which display tones from light tan to dark brown, or cyanotype images (“blueprints”) are also monochrome. Printed and Projected Pictorial Images There are four Pictorial Projected competition levels: B = Basic, I = Intermediate, A = Advanced, M = Masters There are four Pictorial Print competition levels: B = Basic, I = Intermediate, A = Advanced, M = Masters Color Print entry labeling (in upper left corner): P/B, P/I, P/A, P/M Monochrome Print entry labeling (in upper left corner): M/B, M/I, M/A, M/M Creative (C) N4C has adopted the following definition for Creative Creative photography is producing an image through the use of imaginative skill or originality of thought including the altering of reality. No image should be eliminated from competition simply because it looks realistic, provided it shows originality of concept. Creative images may include modifications in the darkroom, on the computer, or in the camera, as well as unusual points of view, imaginative use of subject matter or lighting, or any other presentation that begins with the maker’s photograph or a collection of photographs. All Creative images must be consistent with the standards stated in the preamble to these definitions. In Creative image competition the title is read when showing the image. Printed and Projected Creative Images There are four Creative Projected competition levels: B = Basic, I = Intermediate, A = Advanced, M = Masters There are two Creative Print competition levels: B = Basic, A = Advanced Creative Print entry labeling (in upper left corner): C/B or C/A Travel (T) N4C has adopted the following definition for Travel A Photo Travel image must express the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its distinctive features or culture in its natural state. There are no geographical limitations. Close-up pictures of people or objects must include distinguishable environment. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping are not permitted. All adjustments must appear natural. Conversion to monochrome is allowed. The title should give the location and complement the travel story. All Travel images must be consistent with the standards stated in the preamble to these definitions. Printed and Projected Travel Images There are four Travel Projected competition levels: B = Basic, I = Intermediate, A = Advanced, M = Masters There are two Travel Print competition levels: B = Basic, A = Advanced Travel Print entry labeling (in upper left corner): T/B or T/A Journalism (J) N4C has adopted the following definition for Journalism Journalism entries shall consist of pictures with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news. Sequences in Journalism show a chronology of events or tell a story. Up to four images are permitted in a Sequence in the N4C competition definitions Journalism division, which applies to Projected Image competition only. The journalistic value of the photograph shall be considered over pictorial quality. In the interest of credibility, photographs which misrepresent the truth, such as manipulation of the image, September 2012 Page 15 of 18 or situations which are set up for the purpose of photography, are unacceptable in Journalism competition. The primary concern is to make story-telling and/or newsworthy photographs. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping are not permitted. All adjustments must appear natural. Conversion to monochrome is allowed. In competition the title is read when showing the image. Good titles are important and should add to the photostory. All Journalism images must be consistent with the standards stated in the preamble to these definitions. Printed and Projected Journalism Images There are four Journalism Projected competition levels: B = Basic, I = Intermediate, A = Advanced, M = Masters There are two Journalism Print competition levels: B = Basic, A = Advanced Journalism Print entry labeling (in upper left corner): J/B or J/A Nature (N) N4C has adopted the following definition for Nature The Nature Division is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history except anthropology and archeology in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject matter and certify as to its honest presentation. The informative or nature value of the photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality. Sequences in Nature show a chronology of events or tell a story. Up to four images are permitted in a Sequence in the Nature division, which applies to Projected Image competition only. Human elements may be present only where those human elements add to the viewers’ understanding of the nature subject’s behavior and/or habitat. This habitat may be natural or adopted. The presence of scientific bands on wild animals is acceptable. Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or animals (any plant or animal that has its appearance changed by breeding and selection by man (domesticated), mounted specimens, or obviously set arrangements) are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping are not permitted. All adjustments must appear natural. Conversion to monochrome is allowed. In Nature competition the title should be factual and descriptive and should be read when showing the image. Scientific names are encouraged but are not required. All Nature images must be consistent with the standards stated in the preamble to these definitions. Printed and Projected Nature Images There are four Nature Projected competition levels: B = Basic, I = Intermediate, A = Advanced, M = Masters There are two Nature Print competition levels: B = Basic, A = Advanced Nature Print entry labeling (in upper left corner): N/B or N/A Authentic Wildlife (W) N4C has adopted the following definition for Authentic Wildlife Authentic Wildlife is defined as one or more organisms in the animal kingdom living free and unrestrained in a natural or adopted habitat. Therefore, photographs of zoo or game farm animals are not eligible. Projected Authentic Wildlife Images Authentic Wildlife applies to Projected Images ONLY. Sequence (S) N4C has adopted the following definition for Sequence A sequence consists of a series of two or more related images. A Sequence print must have all images printed on the same sheet of paper, or matted in the same mat. A projected Sequence can be used as a single image, ONLY in the Nature and Journalism Divisions. A projected Nature or Journalism Sequence comprises two to four images. All Sequence images must be consistent with the standards stated in the preamble to these definitions.
