The designer Yvonne Colacion of Colacion Studio in Long Beach, California, was commissioned by a young, internationally-operating businessman to fully furnish and decorate his 1000 m2, two-storey penthouse in Messilah. It enjoys panoramic views of the Persian Gulf. The client has explicit tastes regarding art and design. He has always been attracted by the elegance and sophistication of the twenties and thirties. Colacion has underpinned his preferences by creating a contemporary yet sumptuous Art Deco-inspired home that combines the owner’s Middle Eastern roots with international influences. It has turned into a comfortable dwelling, in which the owner’s passion for entertaining can be enjoyed to the full. In her creation, Yvonne Colacion combines the formal elements of Art Deco in terms of furniture and its setting, with objects that have been made along traditional lines. She asked craftsmen from all over the world to create something and add a contemporary element to the Art Deco ambience. "For instance, she worked with Atelier Charles Jouffre, Lesage and J.Robert Scott on the project.". They made bespoke furniture, which is found throughout the house. In addition, various classical Deco pieces were reproduced, including the Ruhlmann-inspired table made by Frank Pollaro and the elegant chairs sourced from Anne Hauck Art Deco. The design has been executed with great care, as were the exotic fabrics and high-gloss finishes. "Not only did Yvonne Colacion select the items of furniture, she also worked closely with the client to curate the art collection for the penthouse. She carefully choreographed the placement of pieces, by regional emerging artists, throughout the home." “Here, in this Art Deco penthouse on the Arabian peninsula, East meets West in a fascinating setting”, as the designer puts it. 4 OBJEKT OBJEKT 5
