10 Point Plan - Getting the
most from your bearings
Although every bearing has a pre-calculated service life, research has shown that many
bearings fall short of this for a variety of reasons. ERIKS have devised a logical 10
point plan to help our customers get the most from their bearings. For more details

1.
Select the Correct Bearing
Choosing the right bearing at the design stage
is critical to the safe, consistent, efficient running of your machine. It’s important to consider
all the operating parameters such as space,
speed, load direction as well as material, lubrication and shock-load.
2.
Get What you Paid For
Counterfeit bearings are unfortunately on the
rise, making it more important than ever to
deal with authorised sources in the purchasing
stage. Counterfeit bearing can be difficult to
spot but the implications can be extensive and
result in catastrophic failure; costing money.

Store Bearings Correctly
Remember to keep bearings in their original
and unopened package until mounting, to
help prevent corrosion and the ingress of
contaminants. Also beware of the shelf-life of
pre-greased bearings which can range from
3-5 years. Your supplier will be able to advise
you on this if you are unsure.

Prepare for Installation
When removing the existing bearings take
care, as damage to components can significantly delay the fitting and, the performance
of the new ones. Also check that you have
the right equipment to hand and select the
correct fitting method, before you begin.

Fit and Align
16% of premature failures result from incorrect
fitting, damage from hammer blows for example
can ruin the bearings, before they even run.
Adhere to correct fitting practices and you
can help extend the bearing’s service life and
reduce costs over time.

Correct Sealing Arrangement
A correct seal can reduce premature failures
by 14%. Even a tiny amount of contamination can adversely affect the operating life
of a bearing which is why adequate sealing
arrangements are key. Speak to your supplier
for advice.
7.
Maintain Lubrication
Despite the availability of ‘sealed for life’ bearings, 36% of premature bearing failures occur
as a result of incorrect specification and the
inadequate application of lubricant. Getting the
right lubricant, in the right quantity and at the
correct interval levels is therefore essential.
8.
Monitor Bearing Condition
Regular interval checks for bearing are ideal,
even if it’s just visual, temperature and noise
checks. Condition monitoring techniques
such as vibration analysis can also be used to
determine bearing status, enabling companies to address any issues early on and
before any downtime occurs.
9.
Plan for Replacement
No matter how much you care for your bearings, they will need to be replaced at some
point or another and condition monitoring
can help you to plan for that replacement.
That means you can plan for the right people,
components and tools to be available when you
need them.
10.
Upgrade for Savings
When it comes to replacement, don’t just settle
for like-for-like replacements; consider upgrades to sealing, materials or different fittings
- all of which can help you improve performance
further.

SKF high temperature bearings
Solid Oil bearings
SKF high temperature bearings are designed to operate
without any need for relubrication in
low speed applications at temperatures
up to 250 °C (480 °F). SKF high
temperature bearings are filled with a
dry lubricant based on graphite. The
dry lubricant is injected into the free
space of the bearing and cured until
it solidifies. A thin film of dry lubricant
is maintained on the raceways and
rolling elements to avoid metal-to-metal
contact.
Where accessibility to the
bearing for relubrication is
impractical. Solid Oil is an
excellent solution. Solid Oil is
an oil-saturated, polymer matrix
that fills the entire free space
in the bearing, protecting
both the rolling elements and
cage(s) (sealed spherical roller
bearings). Solid Oil bearings
may operate in temperatures
of up to 85°C (185°F) and at
low speeds. Virtually any SKF
spherical roller bearing can be
supplied as a Solid Oil bearing.

Maintenance-free, corrosion-resistant SKF Food Line
Y-bearing units withstand frequent high-pressure washdowns
High pressure washdowns are necessary to ensure hygienic conditions,
but can quickly destroy mounted bearings. Thanks to the highly effective
2RF seal, SKF Food Line Y-bearing units do not allow water to enter
bearings, eliminating the need for re-greasing after washdowns to “purge”
water and contaminants. This common practice can damage the seal,
enabling water ingress that causes bearing failure in as little as six months.
Engineered to withstand high pressure
washdowns, SKF Food Line Y-bearing
units feature a non-porous surface with
no cavities to reduce risk of bacteria
accumulation.
Pre-lubricated with NSF food-grade grease, these units are available in a
full range of housing shapes in corrosion resistant composite material or
stainless steel, with stainless steel and zinc-coated bearing inserts. Units
have no grease nipples since no re-lubrication is required.
The resulting benefits can be many, from reduced maintenance costs and a
safer workplace to elimination of re-lubrication and – as a result – reduced
environmental impact.

Design and Construction
Timken offers split plummer block housings that can be built
with either tapered bore bearings with adapters for mounting
on straight shafts or cylindrical bore bearings for assembly on
shouldered shafts.
Timken uses a system of dowelling caps and bases together
at an early stage of manufacturing, so that they remain a single
unit during machining. They are not interchangeable as separate
parts and become precisely mated components, helping to
ensure a precise fit. Timken supplies plummer block housings
for mounting with two or four bolts.

there is no need to pre-wash the bearings before mounting.
The global packaging has the following features:

nVPI (Vapour Phase Inhibitor) impregnated into the nylon polyethylene
laminated bag. This gives extra corrosion protection
nBearing vacuum packed and heat-sealed for added protection from the
outside environment. This same packaging method is used for factory
greased bearings and all sealed bearings. So there is no need to pre-clean
the bearings before mounting.
