While its suburban location offers much in the way of high-quality, big-city amenities, the Germantown area has
worked hard to maintain its small-town, bucolic charm. The region’s distinct German heritage is reflected in all
aspects of the community—in its congenial nature, historical sites, unique shops, great restaurants and in the
clear use of traditional fachwerk architecture in many local structures.
The award-winning Germantown area has seen incredible growth, both residentially and economically, over the
last 10-plus years. Its location on Milwaukee’s northwest side appeals to suburban lifestyles, while its
preservation of natural green space and outdoor recreational areas appeal to the rural way of living. Adding to
this is the overall friendly and welcoming demeanor, making the Germantown area an attractive place for
residential life and business ventures.
Whether you live here, commute from out of town or are just visiting, the Germantown area welcomes all to
come experience everything that it has to offer—Willkommen!
While the Germantown area has effectively adapted to the present-day lifestyle, characterized by modern
amenities and a progressive local economy, it still cherishes the rich heritage that has made it what it is today.
The Village of Germantown stands as Washington County’s oldest settled town, having enticed a great number
of German settlers back in the 1840s. Many travelers had to initially set foot in the area in order to access
locations to the north and south, driving much traffic through the Germantown area. As a result of this traffic and
the settlement’s ideal locale within a day’s travel time from Milwaukee, many businesses established residence
here in order to accommodate the needs of travelers.
The Germantown area continued to develop with the welcoming of two major railroads and the discovery of
limestone formations. Germantown’s economic vitality boomed and, in turn, its population steadily increased.
Today, the Village of Germantown is a solid community of approximately 20,000 and growing. The surrounding
communities comprising Washington County continue to grow as well with a total of nearly 131,000 people
calling this region home.
Residents and visitors alike can discover the area’s history through a handful of historical sites and museums,
several of which are overseen by the Germantown Historical Society—a significant aspect of the community for
nearly four decades. Learn more about Germantown area history at www.germantownhistoricalsociety.org.
The Germantown area is a charming suburban community nestled within Washington County, approximately 30
minutes northwest of Milwaukee and two hours from Chicago, IL. This strategic location affords it easy access to
all the big-city amenities and cultural avenues of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
Miles upon miles of U.S., state and county highway networks, plus countless local roadways, provide commuters
with efficient road travel in, out and around the Germantown area. Interstates 43 and 94, U.S. Highways 41 and
45 and State Highways 144 and 33 wind throughout Washington County, offering easy access to destinations
across the U.S.
Public ground transportation is readily available for commuters in the area. Washington County offers the SharedRide Taxi Service, which offers door-to-door service for county residents (including specialized service for
disabled residents), as well as the Germantown Senior Van Service and the Washington County Commuter
Express. WCCE provides weekday bus transportation to and from the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Amtrak
passenger rail service is available nearby in Milwaukee.
Corporate and general aviation services are offered through the West Bend Municipal Airport, while commercial
air travel is afforded at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport. Noted as Wisconsin’s largest airport,
General Mitchell supplies nonstop service to more than 50 cities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
The Germantown area lies within one of the fastest- growing regions in Wisconsin and is itself experiencing
substantial growth in both the residential and economic markets. With new businesses moving into the
community, more and more employees are choosing to relocate to the community, and with its location near
downtown Milwaukee, the Germantown area has become a desirable place for commuters to reside.
Though Germantown’s population is on the rise, it has still successfully maintained that small-town essence and
has preserved much of its natural land area, giving way to a charming rural environment many take pleasure in in
this Midwestern region.
But Germantown is not rural in all senses, as it is equipped with all the significant amenities of a major city.
Outstanding healthcare, top-rate educational resources, progressive government programs and services, plenty of
shopping and dining and abundant recreation are accompanied by an excellent assortment of housing
opportunities for both buyers and renters, making Germantown the ideal community for families and retirees.
With all of this and more, it is no wonder Germantown has been recognized multiple times as one of the “Best
Places to Live” by Money magazine—most recently ranking #76 out of 100 in the 2009 listing.
A diverse mixture of quaint shops, antique and collectible markets, major department stores and a long list of
appetizing restaurants make Germantown a premier site for shopping and dining excursions.
National chain stores line County Line Road and Appleton Avenue, while many local merchants are found along
Mequon Road and Main Street. The “Old World” feel to Germantown’s Main Street district makes it quite
unique with much of the area displaying the traditional German fachwerk architecture. Mequon Road, featuring
the modern Markt Platz, is lined with charming boutiques and delicious dining establishments in a distinct
European environment.
Germantown is also home to many professional service providers including accountants, attorneys, automotive
services, business coaching, home and commercial builders, investment advisors, insurance agents, massage
therapy, pain management, music lessons, realtors, salons, shipping, printing and copying services, advertising
and marketing and banking.
A day of shopping can certainly work up an appetite. Not to worry, as Germantown is chock-full of eclectic
eateries to satisfy just about any palate. The community is within a 20-minute drive of more than 50 restaurants
and pubs, serving up everything from well-known American fare to ethnic favorites such as Italian, Chinese,
Mexican and, of course, traditional German dishes. Choose from casual atmospheres to fine dining
establishments, or grab a cup of coffee at an area coffeehouse.
Distinct attractions and museums span the Germantown area, and its location near the city of Milwaukee puts it
within close distance of a host of additional popular diversions not to be missed while in southeastern Wisconsin.
Established in 1842, the Dheinsville Historic Park is recognized as the Township’s first commercial business
district. The hamlet has retained all of its 22 original structures distinguished by the German-style framing known
as fachwerk. Within the historic 9.5-acre park, which is overseen by the Germantown Historical Society, visitors
can view the World War I Memorial, take part in a calendar of events and browse through three museums,
including the Christ Church Museum of Local History, listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the Sila
Lydia Bast Bell Museum; and the Wolf Haus Museum & Genealogy Research Center.
Located within 10 miles of Germantown, atop the highest elevation in southeastern Wisconsin, is the Holy Hill
National Shrine. The neo-Romanesque architecture of the church and the overall spiritual essence of the area
attracts more than 500,000 visitors from all over the world every year.
The Schauer Arts & Activities Center, located in Hartford, is a nonprofit, regional center for the arts, staging
professional touring performances as well as shows by Hartford City Band, Hartford Community Chorus, the
Hartford Players and the Kettle Moraine Fine Arts Guild. After extensive renovations to its building, the Schauer
Center opened in February 2001 and now boasts the 571-seat Ruth A. Knoll Theater, the Suckow Family Art
Gallery, the Lodge and Ante meeting rooms, a dance studio and Pikes Peak banquet room. The Schauer Center
also offers visual and performing arts classes for all ages.
Also positioned in Hartford is the Wisconsin Automotive Museum, the state’s largest automobile museum. The
always-expanding collection presents an array of classic automobiles, including the Kissel, and nearly 100
additional unique displays and related memorabilia. The museum also houses the Southeastern Wisconsin Short
Track Hall of Fame as well as a 250-ton locomotive exhibit.
Just north of Germantown, the City of West Bend hosts a few popular regional attractions. It is home to the
Museum of Wisconsin Art (MWA), which features a collection of Wisconsin art throughout the ages. The West
Bend Sculpture Walk is composed of more than 25 exhibits of modern sculpture, which line Downtown West
Bend’s Riverwalk. Also schedule a stop at the Old Courthouse & Jailhouse Museums (listed on the National
Register of Historic Places) and the 136-acre Lac Lawrann Conservancy.
LODGING
After a day of sightseeing, finding a comfortable place to rest is easy in the Germantown area. Both business
travelers and tourists can find high-quality, modern amenities and pleasant accommodations near many of the
area’s attractions and business centers through its local hotels/motels, including Germantown’s AmericInn Lodge
& Suites, Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, Holiday Inn Express and Super 8 Motel. A full listing of area hotels
is available in the Buyer’s Guide at the back of this book under lodging.
A wealth of meticulously maintained municipal, county and state-operated parks adorn the landscape of this
northwest suburban area, offering guests an exhaustive list of outdoor activities. From tennis and basketball
courts, trail systems and playground equipment to athletic fields, ball parks and opportunities for water sports, the
area’s park sites are favorite year-round destinations for residents and visitors alike. For a description of each
park or to learn more about the programs provided through the Germantown Park & Recreation Department, visit
the Village’s website at www.village.germantown.wi.us.
Germantown is home to two well-manicured golf courses, BlackStone Creek Golf Club and Riversbend Golf
Course. Conveniently located nearby are Kettle Hills Golf Course in Richfield and Silver Spring Country Club in
Menomonee Falls. In all, there are 45 golf courses located within a 15-mile radius from the heart of Germantown.
Washington County Fair Park is located 10 minutes north of Germantown on the most southern edge of West
Bend. In addition to the Washington County Fair bringing in nationally known entertainment, this facility is
home to events of all kinds all year round. Visit: www.visitwashingtoncounty.com for a listing of events.
For the seniors of the community, the Germantown Senior Center has recreational activities and entertainment
designed specially for them.

All of Germantown and sections of neighboring Richfield, Polk and Jackson are served by the dedicated
Germantown School District. Students receive excellent educational opportunities through the district’s six
schools, which include Amy Belle, County Line, MacArthur and Rockfield Elementary schools, Kennedy Middle
School and Germantown High School. The district’s regular curriculum, led by a treasury of knowledgeable
faculty and staff, is complemented by an array of specialized programs and co-curricular activities.
For those looking to take an alternative route for primary and secondary education, Germantown and its closely
surrounding communities offer a number of excellent private institutions to meet such needs. Additionally, busy
parents have access to first-rate childcare and early learning centers in the Germantown area.
Higher education is readily available within the Germantown area as well. Milwaukee Area Technical College
(MATC)-Mequon serves graduating seniors interested in immediate workforce entry or transfer to a four-year
institution, as well as adults looking to enhance current skills or gain new ones. Students enrolled at the Mequon
campus take advantage of a number of associate degree, diploma and professional certificate programs. Mequon
also hosts Concordia University Wisconsin, a four-year liberal arts institution.
North of Germantown, students have further access to higher learning in the City of West Bend. The community
is home to a campus of Moraine Park Technical College (MPTC), as well as the University of WisconsinWashington County (UW-WC)—a freshman-sophomore campus within the UW system offering low tuition, the
choice of more than 200 majors, flexible scheduling and transfer opportunities. The University’s partnership with
UW-Milwaukee, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville make it possible to complete a bachelor’s degree without
having to leave the Washington County campus.
Further public and private four-year educational opportunities can be found in the city of Milwaukee, a short
commute from the Germantown area.
The auspicious opportunities for new and longstanding businesses are overflowing. Its locale in a major
metropolitan area, the diversity of its entire economic environment, the availability of exceptional local and state
incentives, plus the great possibilities for business development and expansion have made the Germantown area
the best possible place for ventures of all kinds.
The Village of Germantown is home to two industrial parks—the Germantown Industrial Park and the
Germantown Business Park —each providing first-rate properties, amenities and incentives for businesses
looking to relocate to the community. Located within and around these concentrated business areas is a unique
blend of businesses ranging from locally owned merchants to large, innovative companies such as Cambridge
Major Laboratories, WAGO, Great Lakes Packaging, J.W. Speaker and Gehl Foods.
