FOUNDATION kettering parks Newsletter Improving the Quality of Life. www.ketteringparksfoundation.org W I N T E R 2 0 1 2 Reach for the Sky Campaign Nearing Completion to create the Reach for the Sky permanent fund, and the interest earned from that fund will be used to provide financial assistance to youth and families in the City of Kettering. In early 2011, the Kettering Parks Foundation (KPF) made the strategic decision to enter into its first ever capital campaign to raise $115,000 for a permanent fund. The fund will provide financial assistance for individuals and families in our community who are unable to afford the cultural, recreational and educational enrichment programs offered by Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department (PRCA). To date, the Reach for the Sky campaign has secured in excess of $73,000 in pledges and gifts towards this goal. These contributions have been committed from businesses, service clubs, city council members and many individuals who believe strongly in the mission of the KPF. The gifts have enabled the KPF In the previous KPF newsletter, we reported about the historic donations made by all four of the service clubs in the Kettering area. Combined, they donated $34,350 to the permanent fund. In addition to these wonderful pledges, the Kettering Rotary has decided to name KPF as beneficiary of the proceeds raised from their August 2013 festival entitled “Chalk About It.” The festival will be held at Lincoln Park Civic Commons and will feature chalk artists, many of whom will be creating threedimensional drawings. There will be lessons and free drawing sessions as well as a corporate challenge. This event will be a nice addition to the fund-raising efforts of the Reach for the Sky campaign, but it will not complete the campaign. The finish line is drawing closer and we will need the collective efforts of all our friends and supporters to make this dream a reality. $115,000 $73,000 $0 Please make a gift today to the Reach for the Sky campaign, and help us permanently ensure that all Kettering families will have access to quality programing. Like many businesses and nonprofits, the Kettering Parks Foundation (KPF) periodically reviews its practices to ensure it is operating in the most cost-effective manner possible. This is a necessary step to guarantee that the majority of every dollar donated to the Foundation is spent on mission critical programs and not operational overhead. Furthermore, due to the fact that a major directive of the Foundation is to support the parks, it has become apparent that we need to operate with as little environmental impact as possible. These thoughts were the driving force behind the KPF’s decision to “Go Green” by providing all correspondence and newsletters in an email format that will arrive directly to your mailbox. The new electronic newsletters will allow for substantial savings on the cost of printing and postage each year and will mean less use of paper products. Overall, the changes will allow the KPF to maximize every dollar donated. While this is an important change for the KPF, it does require some effort on your part. We are asking that you please provide the KPF with an email address where you would like to receive further correspondence. We will only use this email address for approved KPF correspondence, and the email will not be shared or sold to any third party vendors. To provide us with your email address, please send an email to [email protected] with Go Green in the subject line or return the attached Going Green card. We appreciate your assistance in this matter and are looking forward to a greener future! Kettering Parks Foundation Grant Support Each year the Kettering Parks Foundation (KPF) researches and applies for grants from local businesses, foundations and governmental agencies to help provide vital financial support to projects throughout Kettering. Previous grant awards have helped supply vans for the Charles I. Lathrem Senior Center, renovations for Pondview Park, fiscal support for Camp Funtastic and much more. On a yearly basis, the KPF reviews the pressing needs of the Kettering community and attempts to find grant opportunities to help fill those needs. The top priority for most of 2011 was the construction of The Habitat Environmental Center. Since late 2010, the existing structure at Southdale Park has been undergoing construction to create a new nature center. The Habitat is primarily designed to provide hands-on environmental programs for kindergarten through fifth grade students as well as being available for summer camps, workshops, retreats and family programming. The building will house native animals and an extensive collection of natural elements including feathers, shells and more. The majority of The Habitat was funded through the 2008 Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts bond levy; however, the KPF applied to several local businesses and foundations to help with construction of several interactive learning centers that will teach about environmental responsibility, sustainability, recycling and green practices. The KPF was also able to secure partial funding for an outdoor playground near The Habitat. The grant funding for these projects c a m e f r o m Wa s t e Management, Vectren, The Community Foundation for Kettering and the Kiwanis Club and totaled $37,500. The KPF is very appreciative of these wonderful gifts, and we are looking forward to the opening of The Habitat. Veterans Plaza|Charles F.
