The Kennedy Center American College Theater
Festival™ 47, part of the Rubenstein Arts Access
Program, is generously funded by
David and Alice Rubenstein
This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival
(KCACTF). The aims of this national theater education program are to identify and
promote quality in college-level theater production. To this end, each production entered
is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students
and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships,
internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights,
designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels.
Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for invitation to the
KCACTF regional festival and may also be considered for national awards recognizing
outstanding achievement in production, design, direction and performance.
Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more
than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department
is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary
work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.
Cast Biographies
LaVonne Canfield is a graduate student in drama therapy at Kansas State University. She
holds a BFA in Acting from Florida International University. She has been an Expressive
Arts Facilitator for the past 8 years bringing interdisciplinary workshops to prisons in South
Florida. Acting credits include Fräulein Schnieder in Cabaret, June in Marisol, Nurse in
Romeo and Juliet, Mother in The House of Yes, and Aileen Wournos in The Last Resort,
which she also wrote and directed. She is grateful to have found a theatre family here in
Kansas.
Sandy Chastan, a retired French teacher, is pursing her master’s in theatre performance.
Last fall she was seen as Grandma Rosie in K-State’s production of The Wedding Singer.
She has portrayed many roles at the MAC, most recently Mrs. Watts in The Trip to
Bountiful. She has also performed as a Kit Kat Girl in Cabaret and as Winnie-the-Pooh
in the musical Winnie-the-Pooh, both at the Arrowhead Regional Theatre in Hibbing, MN.
She is supremely happy to be working with Jerry Jay and this amusing, amazing cast and
considers herself very fortunate to have found a niche among so many talented people in
the School of Music, Theatre and Dance.
Cat Huck is a senior majoring in theatre with an emphasis in performance. Her past roles
at Kansas State University include Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest,
Meena in Rx, Mrs. Montgomery in The Heiress, and Aniga Gringa in In The Blood. Cat
would like to thank you for filling the seats.
Sam Johnson is a senior at Kansas State University. He has participated in one show at
Kansas State University and is thankful for all of the new friends he has met in the School
of Music, Theatre, and Dance! He would like to give a shout out to all the family and
friends who have supported him throughout the years; he really appreciates it!
Daijah Porchia is a sophomore at Kansas State University and is thrilled to be a part of
this production.
Mark Young is a senior at Kansas State University majoring in theatre. Past roles include
Paul Bratter in Barefoot in the Park, Phil Gray in Rx, and Michael Novak in God of
Carnage. The funny, handsome, and charming actor loves comedy and aspires to someday
become a beloved sitcom star.
Director’s Notes
Christopher Durang was awarded the Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, New
York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk and the 2013 Tony Award for best play for
his off-Broadway and Broadway runs of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.
The New York Times review called it a “sunny new play about gloomy people.”
The script uses themes, names and familial situations found in the works of
Chekhov. While an understanding of Chekhov might heighten the appreciation
of Durang’s comedy, it is not a necessity. Durang calls it a comic homage to
Chekov’s works, not a parody and not meant to emulate any of his works directly.
How exciting for K-State Theatre to produce such a recent hit from the Big Apple.
I personally enjoy the quirky personalities of these characters and as a director of
a certain age, can appreciate Durang’s rant against modern day sensibilities while
yearning for a less technological, simpler time. I hope you enjoy this journey of
our modern day Three Sisters as they seek to mend their broken family and reclaim
their lost lives before it’s too late.
