You have helped the School fulfill its commitment to promoting the arts, teaching and changing lives! Thank you for your past and continued support. The Baum School offers unique and tremendously valuable opportunities for students of all ages to discover and pursue their talents and interest in the visual arts. Mission Statement The Baum School of Art is a community school dedicated to providing instruction, guidance and encouragement for children, adults, and those who wish to pursue college level studies to reach their highest level of technical, physical, spiritual, creative, and emotional 2005-2006 Enrollment children 1,741 adult 1,522 total 3,263 potential through the study of the visual arts. The School values the diversity of its population, including, but not limited to, gender, creed, social status or race. This mission is deeply rooted in service to the community. 2 What began eighty years ago, with Walter Emerson Baum instructing 20 public school art teachers on the third floor of the old Franklin Firehouse, has grown into a thriving visual arts school with 28 instructors and over 3,200 enrollments per year meeting in a 25,000 square foot, state of the art facility. 3 CHILDREN’S CLASSES 158 classes for children and teens offered comprehensive instruction for beginner through advanced level students to foster and develop a keen interest in the visual arts. Year-round classes were offered on weekdays, evenings and Saturdays in five sessions: fall, winter, spring, post and summer. The summer is divided into four sessions - a Mini Camp for one week at the end of June and three, two week sessions that run from early July to midAugust. Rhode Island tape mural artist Anthony Oesch visited the Baum School of Art and created a “tape art mural” on the east and south sides of the building. Courses offered for credit to Penn State LV students were Painting I, Drawing I and Photography I. Penn State LV enrollment for the 2005-2006 school year was 46 students. State of Pennsylvania Five Baum School Scholarship and Community Programs for children and teens have been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Community Digital Photography and Economic Development for the Educational Multi Media Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC). This program Cerealism Workshop (w/Michael Albert) The Art of Collage Sculpture 6 Educational Partners offers tax credits to eligible businesses contributing to education improvement or scholarship organizations (including pre-kindergarten). 7 SCHOLARSHIP & FINANCIAL AID Pursuant of its mission, Linny’s Kids an important element in the Baum School’s operations has been the Scholarship and Financial Assistance Program. In The Baum School offers a special tuition assistance program designed to offer children, whose addition to supporting meritorious achievement, the School believes that no student should be deprived of studying families cannot afford the cost of tuition, an opportunity to attend classes. Financial Aid & Meritorious Scholarships Adult 108 Children 534 Star Program The Star Program (Senior Tuition Assistance Relief), established by Fredda and Bruce Fischman, benefits senior citizens who need assistance in paying tuition for art classes. Teenage Scholarship Program Established in 1965, the Baum School’s Teenage Scholarship Program annually invites area Junior Community and Scholarship Programs Teenage Scholarship program* 34 Inner City/Neighborhood Scholarship program* 169 Allentown Catholic School program 67 Outreach for Teens in Allentown * 40 High and Middle School teachers to recommend talented eighth grade students for Baum School scholarship classes that promote technical and creative development. 34 students participated in the program in 2005-2006. Neighborhood Scholarship Program For the sixteenth year, The Baum School of Art invited ten inner-city Allentown elementary schools to recommend third, fourth and fifth grade students to attend this full scholarship 10-week program. 169 students participated in 2005-2006. Special Needs Programs Access to the Arts (Adult mental health consumers) 32 Classes for Allentown Catholic Schools Good Shepherd Residents 12 Students from Holy Spirit and Our Lady Help of Christians elementary schools attended classes Mercy Special Learning Center 10 at the Baum School throughout the entire school year to compensate for the lack of art in their school curriculums. 67 students attended. Outreach for Teens in Allentown This afterschool program offered drawing, painting, sculpture and various craft techniques classes Total students receiving assistance 1006 for teens from Casa Guadalupe and on Lehigh County Probation. Receptions and exhibits of the students’ works were held at the culmination of the programs. * EITC approved program 8 9 PA RT N E R S H I P S The annual Baum School of Art Open House was held on Sunday afternoon, March 12, 2006, highlighting the art created by children who attended Spring classes. Family and friends were invited to meet faculty and view classrooms and teen demonstrations. Over 300 people attended and more than 50 students were recognized with the meritorious scholarships. The Art Walk The Art Walk was held on April 20 & 21, 2006 with the theme of Mozart’s 125th Birthday Celebration. Approximately 500 third grade students from the Allentown School District participated in this program, visiting Allentown Symphony Hall, The Baum School of Art and The Allentown Art Museum. City Arts Cultural Camp for Kids Planning spanned the 2005-2006 fiscal year for City Arts Camp, which ran in August 2006. Approximately 30 students had a culturally diverse experience C h i l d r e n ’s March 6 – March 18, 2006 exhibition Exhibition & Open House working with the Allentown Art Museum, Allentown Symphony, The Baum School of Art, Community Music School, Civic Theatre of Allentown, and Repertory Dance Theatre. Mayfair The Baum School ran Mayfair’s Art Works program again this year. This program offers educational projects in art for children and families who visit the festival. Da Vinci Discovery Center Baum School faculty members were invited to the Da Vinci Discovery Center in Allentown to offer visual art experiences to children and families who visited the Center during the Christmas holiday and Spring Break. Rodale Gallery with an opening reception and book signing. One of Pennsylvania’s most famous artists, his drawings often have a satirical tone that evokes both humor and thought. Johnson’s workshop and visit to Wm. Allen High School’s Arts Academy included 50 students and was made possible by a grant from the Dexter and Dorothy Baker educational and government clients. The CPC inventory includes works of regional painters such as Walter E. Baum, John Berninger, Mel Stark, Ann Yost Whitesell, Richard Peter Hoffman, Lee Everett, Conrad Roland, Jerry Quier and many others. The School has been mindful of the goodwill we have afforded to many city groups by allowing their gratis use of the room. 12 13 EVENTS DONORS Annual Scholarship Gala The 2005 Baum School of Art Scholarship Gala on November 12, 2005 honored Linny and Beall Thank you to our generous donors Gifts received between 7/1/05 - 6/30/06. Fowler. Not only was the couple honored as stars in the philanthropic community, but Linny was also honored as an artist. Two-hundred stained glass stars, created by Linny Fowler and Octavio Pena, hung from the ceiling of the David E. Rodale Gallery, creating the image of a glittering $50,000 + starry night. Individuals who contributed to the School’s Scholarship Fund received a stained Dr. and Mrs. Beall Fowler glass star and had their name displayed as a star in the gallery. The cocktail hour was held on the third floor, the Fowler Family Room, in which a large Andy Warhol-like, computer generated image of Linny hung on the wall. Dinner was held on the first floor and catered by Karen Hunter. Over 120 attended the very special event, which raised $27,782 for the Baum School Scholarship Fund. $20,000 + The Century Fund Harry C.
