PREFACE
5
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear medical doctors and scientists,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you all in Leipzig for the Second International Symposium addressing HPV infection in Head
and Neck Cancer on behalf of the European Head and Neck
Society (EHNS). We feel very honoured that you chose our city
for your European conference and hope that you will spend a
pleasant and impressive time in Leipzig. As mayor of this fast growing, young and shining city and host of the city hall, your conference place, I would like to give you a brief introduction to the
interesting history of this building. Owing to Leipzig’s increasing
importance both politically and administratively, our administration was in need of a new and more spacious infrastructure. The
architect and city building director of Leipzig, Hugo Licht, was
charged with the design of the new city hall. Inaugurated in 1905,
the city hall is often considered as one of the most important city
halls in Germany and is particularly well known for its historicist
style and ornamental façade. Today, this building is definitely in
the heart of Leipzig and will be an ideal accommodation for your
Mayor City of Leipzig
conference. Regarding your topic and recognizing the severity
Burkhard Jung
and complexity of head and neck cancer, I would like to emphasize the success the ENT department and Cancer Centre (UCCL)
of our University has achieved in attracting patients, students, doctors and scientists nationwide thanks to their well-recognized strong
fight against head and neck cancer. It is interesting to learn that
HPV infection plays an increasing role in development of this type
of cancer. Therefore I can understand that questions like vaccination beside life style conditions have to be proven for future prevention strategies. This is why I am especially grateful for this important stimulus you are providing Leipzig, a city which has recently
experienced a strong growth in scientific and educational structures. I would like once again to extend to you all my gratitude
for your participation and my wishes for particularly fruitful hours
of lectures and debates. I am looking forward to welcoming you
in Leipzig again soon and I hope that we will be successful in captivating you with our city’s charming and international atmosphere.
We corsially welcome you in November,
sincerely yours, Burkhard Jung, Mayor City of Leipzig
