HEADING FOR BILBAO
Situated on the Cantabrian coast, Bilbao is the most
thriving economic city of the north of Spain and the
Atlantic Arc. The city has been put back on the world
map as a model of urban regeneration and the
Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, is one of its most
outstanding and emblematic landmarks. It was in
2010 when the city received the Lee Kuan Yew World
City Prize which is considered to be “the Nobel prize
for cities”, and the “Citta D'acqua” special recognition
awarded by the Venice Architecture Bienniale.
Tradition and modernity plus a number of highly
attractive cultural, leisure and commercial options
have transformed the city into what is nowadays an
essential destination in terms of tourism and business.

G A S T R O N O M Y:
THE MAIN COURSE
Bilbao's international
airport named “La
Paloma” (the dove) was
designed by architect
Santiago Calatrava and
is very near the city
centre. It offers direct
flights to Spain's main
cities and several
European capitals with
connections to airports
all over the world.
It is the most important
airport in the North of
Spain in terms of
passengers and
economic impact.
An extensive, diverse
and top-quality range of
hotels. Three, four and
five-star establishments
with more than 4,000
rooms, all situated
within the metropolitan
area of Bilbao.
Several of them are
landmark buildings
thanks to their avantgarde architecture and
design, executed by top
names such as Miró,
Mariscal or Legorreta.
Bilbao always leaves a
good taste. It is here where
you will come across some
of the world's finest
restaurants. From Michelin
star winners, such as the
Etxanobe restaurant at the
Euskalduna Conference
Centre to restaurants
focused on design,
traditional or international
cuisine, cider bars and
many places where the
famous “pintxos” are served.
There are just not enough
days to properly savour all
the food this city has to
offer gastronomy lovers.
THE LAST VESSEL
ABOARD THE EUSKALDUNA
Elected World's Best Congress
Centre by the International
Association of Convention
Centres (AIPC) in 2003
The Euskalduna Conference Centre
set sail in 1999. Its impressive profile
symbolises the last vessel ever to be built
at the shipyard after which the building
was named. It is one of the most
emblematic venues that has set the course
for a new Bilbao, a city now open to the
rest of the world.
BACKGROUND
ARCHITECTURE
The building stands on the Nervión
riverbank exactly where the “Euskalduna
Shipyard” was located in the past. In their
designs, architects Federico Soriano and
Dolores Palacios made it resemble a ship
under construction, the last vessel ever
to be built at the nowadays extinct shipyard
as a tribute to the steel making and
shipbuilding tradition in operation along
the river banks in Bilbao and to the company
that once worked there for decades.
This impressive building is a landmark of
contemporary architecture. It was awarded
the Enric Miralles prize in 2001 at the 6th
Spanish Architecture Biennial.
In 2012, the facilities were enlarged by
adding on more versatile and open-floor
space to supplement the extensive range of
rooms already available at the Euskalduna
Conference Centre. A 58,200 m2 multipurpose venue offering a large number of
options for meetings, conferences and shows.
