President’s Message
Sisterhood of quilters
Sisterhood, I love that word! As the new
president of this guild, I get a better sense
of what Sandra Detrixhe meant in her
book “Zen and the art of quilting,
exploring memory and meaning in
Patchwork” : “(…) join a sisterhood of
quilters, attend quilt retreats” I read her
book in 2008, during my vacations, the
year that I had become a member in May,
after I had seen my very first quilt show
(the Common Thread’s quilt show). So I
went to my very first retreat, not really
knowing what to expect. I quickly got
stung by the excitement through the
various activities organised by our guild…
Our sisterhood.
Now that summer is finally here, and we
take a short break from our meetings and
activities. I’ll go back to my very first
sisterhood in my yearly vacation with my
Chantale Richard
3 sisters (no kids, no
pets, no spouse) in a
quiet Quebec Cottage,
where we quilt together
and enjoy each other’s
company, sitting around
the fireplace and
complaining about bugs
and how fast the years
fly by. Then we each go back to our
homes and families.
This summer, I also plan to go to quilt
show and explore new quilt shops. I hope
that each of you enjoy summertime and
come back in September for another year
of quilting sisterhood. I’ll see you then
and am already eager to see all the quilts
that you bring to “show and tell”.
Regards,
Chantale Richard

COMMON THREAD QUILT GUILD
Library
At the June meeting we will be
having our annual used book and
magazine sale. Some are older
books from the library and many
are donations.
You may take books and
magazines out for the summer if
you have a membership for 20152016. Reservations for
June can be made by e-mail to
[email protected].
I need some volunteers for next
year starting in September. This
involves coming an hour before
the meeting and helping take
books in, stamping books out
and putting the books back in
the cupboard. It is also a chance
Liz Villeneuve
to meet other members as they
use the library. Please e-mail
me at the above address or
come and speak with me in the
library in June. All help is
appreciated and helps make
our library a success.
See you in the library
Clever Tips from clever
quilters:
1. Place a picture of the quilt
you are working on to the top
of a storage box. Cut leftover
fabric and put in the box and
soon you will have enough for
another quilt.
2. Use a bead storage
container or pill box to store
your sewing machine needles,
labeling each section for the
size of the needle.
3. Use leftover blocks as
pockets for a tote or gift bag.

Summer Contest 2015
Summer Contest 2015
Reduce! Reuse! Return!
The contest is all about using up
scraps in general and strips in
particular. How to participate:
Reduce our stash! Sign out a
bag of Guild scraps. These
must be used up in the
project. Add whatever you
like to reduce your own
stash.
Reuse! Your Guild pattern
book is available on our
website. Use a design based
on strips: Rail Fence, Log
Cabin, etc. Or use any of
the hundreds of strip
patterns available to you on
the internet.

Five members of the group are participating
in a sale of their new and gently used items
on June 6. Janet will be selling her superbly
finished bags, purses and clothing. She enhances her work using colour and various surface treatments, with a special passion for fine machine embroidery. Shirley will be selling her hand-crafted jewellery made from distinctive semi-precious stones and unique inclusions. Frances will have her pieced fleece
