Be prepared to catch a glimpse, step aboard or set sail on some of the grandest ships of yore. However you choose to experience the Tall Ships® Duluth, I’m sure you will thoroughly enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime event. For these few remarkable summer days, our harbor is home to some of the most renowned sailing ships in the world today – all with their own story to tell. The festival kicks off with a Parade of Sail and Opening Ceremonies, and within the festival grounds you’ll find musical entertainment, great food, family activities, educational opportunities and unique vendors. What really makes an event like Tall Ships® Duluth 2013 so unique is hosting it in a destination like Duluth – on the shores of the world’s greatest lake. Lake Superior is what makes Duluth tick and is undoubtedly the focal point of our visitor experience. Take a moment to spend time near our everchanging lake this weekend. For fresh starts and refreshing perspectives, nothing beats gazing out over this vast expanse. You’ll surely be enriched by its beauty and power and find special memories to take with you. As you make your way around Duluth, you’ll find each of our neighborhoods unique in its own way. Get a room with a view virtually anywhere from Canal Park and downtown to the Munger Trail and Spirit Mountain, or in our mansion district’s bed-and-breakfast inns. Find that special something in our diverse choice of shops. And whet virtually any appetite from classic American to Japanese, and everything in between. Don’t forget to check out Duluth’s craft breweries: suds, songs and stories are in abundant supply up and down Superior Street and all across town. Yes, Duluth really does have it all. Especially if you like it with a freshwater twist. Once again, welcome to Duluth and Tall Ships® Duluth 2013. I have swashbuckled my way through various parties, graduations, weddings, fairs, festivals, boat cruises and parades. I first came upon the lovely port of Duluth at the Tall Ships® Festival in 2010. I had so much fun that I returned a year later to the Maritime Festival in 2011. It is with great honor and privilege that I come before you now once again at Tall Ships® 2013. It is my intention to commandeer one of the ships, take you as some of me crew, raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer my weasely black guts out. Okay, maybe not that last part. I don’t think anyone wants to see that, savvy? If you are waiting for that opportune moment to snap a photo with said pirate, I can accommodate you. I will be at the Official Merchandise Tent in Bayfront Festival Park each day 10-11 a.m. & 2-3 p.m. You can also find me roaming about the festival, though, I may be busy rescuing certain distressing damsels or, rather, damsels in distress … or trying to find the rum, treasure or my jar of dirt. It is my solemn vow, however, to make sure you have a splendid time while you are in port. Fair winds to you all as you board and perhaps even set sail upon these magnificent vessels! Now, bring me that horizon… .
