Assets of Napoles, 3
senators should be
seized – Cayetano
By HANNAH L. TORREGOZA
Senate Majority Leader Alan
Peter S. Cayetano yesterday said
the government should now initiate forfeiture proceedings against
alleged “pork barrel” fund scam
mastermind Janet L. Napoles and
her cohorts.
Cayetano made the proposal
after the Ombudsman rejected
Napoles’ appeal for immunity in
favor of whistleblower Benhur
Luy and the other witnesses in
the R10-billion pork barrel fund
controversy.
The Ombudsman has also rejected the motion for reconsideration filed by Senators Juan
Ponce-Enrile, Jose “Jinggoy” E.
Estrada, and Ramon “Bong” B.
Revilla Jr. who have been charged
for plunder and graft for their alleged involvement in the Priority Development Assistance Fund
(PDAF) scam.
“Tama ang desisyon ng Ombudsman to side with the whistleblowers,” Cayetano said. “This will give
them the assurance na magpalit
man ng administrasyon, protektado pa rin sila. I laud the Ombudsman for her decision,” he said.
Citing Republics Act 6770 and
1379, Cayetano said the Ombudsman has the power to conduct a
preliminary investigation on civil
forfeiture upon a complaint filed
by a citizen taxpayer.
“Kapag nakita mo na hindi
proportional ang pera ng isang
public official dun sa kanyang kita
ay pwede ng kunin ng gobyerno
ang properties na ito,” the senator said.
“Ang tanong ko nga, meron na
ba tayong na-file na forfeiture
cases sa mga senador? Easier ito
sa graft at plunder; ito mas mabilis,” Cayetano said.
Earlier, a Manila court issued a
freeze order on the bank accounts
and properties of Napoles following
the petition for civil forfeiture of assets filed by the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) in February.
Napoles’
reportedly
owns
diamond necklaces and tennis
bracelets, necklaces and bracelets with South Sea pearls, and
other pieces of jewelry with big
precious stones.
It was also reported that Napoles has shares of stocks in
several corporations, and holds
memberships in exclusive clubs.
Likewise, Cayetano said it has
been reported that the businesswoman owns a Ritz Carlton Residences condominium unit in Los
Angeles, a residential lot and preschool in California, and 20 other
vehicles, all of which are yet to be
included in the freeze order.
Cayetano stressed the freeze
order should cover all her properties, including the pricey jewelry
collection she purchased using
pork barrel funds intended for
Filipino families.
He also said that the Aquino
administration should provide
more incentives and protection
to whistleblowers to encourage
them to step forward and expose
corruption in government.
“There is a need to finally pass
the Whistleblowers Act and expand and strengthen our Witness
Protection Program to protect
witnesses from threats and make
sure that their role in exposing
anomalies will not harm their
family’s safety and livelihood,” the
senator said.
Bong welcomes filing of charges
Beleaguered Sen. Ramon “Bong’’ B. Revilla Jr. said
yesterday that he welcomes the impending filing of
plunder charges against him and more than 30 others,
including his two colleagues – Jinggoy Estrada and
Juan Ponce-Enrile – by the Ombudsman before the
Sandiganbayan because he sees the trial court as a
fair venue to defend himself.
“Nakita naman natin kung ano and sinapit namin
sa NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) at DoJ
(Department of Justice) dahil sa kami talaga ang
puntirya, wala silang pakialam sa mga paliwanag
namin na hindi namin alam ang ibinibintang nilang
kaso,’’ Revilla said.
In a press statement, Revilla said he has accepted
the decision of the Ombudsman rejecting their motion
for reconsideration last Thursday “dahil wala naman
kaming mahihita at ni hindi man lamang nila binabasa
ang aming apela.”
Revilla said he had long expected the impending
filing of the plunder charges against them
after the Ombudsman rejected their motion for
reconsideration.
The three senators, numerous past and present
members of the House of Representatives, government
officials, and private persons have been accused of the
non-bailable crime of plunder before the Ombudsman
arising from the controversial R10-billion “pork barrel”
or Priority Development Assistance Fund scam.
The respondents included businesswoman Janet
L. Napoles, alleged brains behind the pork barrel
scam.
Like Estrada, Revilla accused the Aquino
administration of engaging in “selective justice’’
as there were supposed allies of President Aquino
allegedly linked to the scam but were being
protected.
Revilla said even Ombudsman Conchita CarpioMorales has shown her one-sidedness in the handling
of the case when she said that the pieces of evidence
against the three senators are strong and “this is not
right (hindi naman nararapat).”
The three lawmakers were linked to the pork barrel
fund scam by principal whistleblower Benhur Luy, a
cousin and former confidant of Napoles.
Napoles is being detained at a tightly-guarded
detention center in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna after she
had been accused by Luy of serious illegal detention,
a non-bailable crime. (Mario B. Casayuran)

Chinese ships
in disputed
waters – Japan
TOKYO – Chinese ships sailed
into disputed waters off Japanadministered islands in the East
China Sea yesterday, officials
said, after G7 leaders cautioned
against “ntimidation’’ in territorial
disputes.
The Japanese coastguard said
two vessels entered the 12nautical-mile band of territorial
waters around one of the Senkaku
islands, which China also claims
and calls the Diaoyus, at 10 a.m.
(0100 GMT).
“The two ships were initially
spotted about 27 kilometers
(17 miles) west of Uotsurijima,
but they have now entered the
Japanese territorial waters,’’ a
coast guard official said.
For over a year after Tokyo
nationalized some of the islands in
September 2012, Chinese vessels
and aircraft regularly approached,
playing cat and mouse with the
Japanese coastguard.
There has been a marked
decrease in incidents this year
– Friday’s was only the 13th –
although each episode has tended
to come in apparent response to
events in the larger relationship.
The Chinese move came after
leaders of the Group of Seven, who
met in Brussels, warned against
any use of force in the East and
South China Sea, where Beijing is
involved in disputes with several
countries.
“We are deeply concerned by
tensions in the East and South
China Sea,’’ the leaders said in a
statement at the end of a first day
of talks in the Belgian capital.
“We oppose any unilateral
attempt by any party to assert
its territorial or maritime claims
through the use of intimidation,
coercion, or force.’’
The statement, which did not
mention any country by name,
called on all countries to follow
international law in resolving
competing claims. (AFP)

Junta detains anti-coup leader
BANGKOK – Thailand’s junta said yesterday that it had captured a fugitive
anti-coup leader facing possible imprisonment, as the ruling generals seek to
stamp out any criticism of their seizure of power.
Sombat Boonngamanong, who
spearheaded an online campaign
to stage illegal flashmob rallies
against the military takeover,
was arrested late Thursday in
eastern Chonburi province, army
spokeswoman Sirichan Ngathong
said.
“We have a team who tracked
him through the Internet,’’ she
told AFP.
“He faces initial charges of
violating an order to report to the
junta,’’ she said, a charge that
carries a possible punishment of
two years in prison.
Sombat was one of several
hundred people – including
politicians, activists, academics,
and journalists – summoned by
the military following its May 22
coup.
Those who attended were
detained in secret locations for
up to a week and ordered to cease
political activities.
Sombat, a prominent prodemocracy activist, refused to
turn himself in, instead posting
a message on Facebook saying:
“Catch me if you can.’’
S i n c e t h e n h e h a s u rg e d
followers to stage peaceful public
demonstrations, flashing the threefinger salute from the “Hunger
Games’’ films that has become
a symbol of defiance against the
junta.
Sombat is the leader of a faction
of the “Red Shirts’’ movement,
which broadly supports fugitive
former premier Thaksin Shinawatra
and his sister Yingluck, who was
deposed as prime minister last
month.
A former minister in Yingluck’s
ousted cabinet who also refused
to answer the summons was
detained by soldiers in a dramatic
swoop on a press conference late
last month, and faces trial in a
military court.
The junta has imposed martial
law, media censorship, and a
night-time curfew as part of what
it says is an attempt to end political
bloodshed.
It mounted a show of military
strength over the weekend,
deploying soldiers to deter small
but defiant anti-coup rallies that
popped up outside shopping
malls and near train stations in
Bangkok.
Critics see the coup as a pretext
for a long-planned power grab
by the military-backed royalist
establishment to purge politics
of the influence of Thaksin, who
was himself ousted by the army
in 2006.
The billionaire tycoon-turnedpopulist politician lives in Dubai
to avoid jail for a corruption
conviction. Thaksin or his allies
have won every election in more
than a decade, helped by strong
support in the northern half of the
country.
The junta has said elections are
not expected to be held for at least
a year to allow political ‘’reforms,’’
including the drafting of a new
constitution. (AFP)
Student disarms Seattle gunman
SEATTLE – A lone gunman
armed with a shotgun and
knife opened fire Thursday in
a building at a small Seattle
university, fatally wounding
one person before a student
subdued him with pepper spray
as he tried to reload, police
said.
A student building monitor
at Seattle Pacific University
disarmed the gunman after he
entered the foyer at Otto Miller
Hall, and several other students
jumped on top of him and
pinned him down until police
officers arrived, police said.
A 19-year-old man died at
Harborview Medical Center.
Three other people were
hospitalized. A critically injured
20-year-old woman was taken to
surgery, hospital spokeswoman
Susan Gregg said. A 24-yearold man and a 22-year-old man
were in satisfactory condition.
Gregg says one of those two
men was not shot.
N o n e o f t h e v i c t i m s wa s
immediately identified.
At a news conference Thursday
night, Assistant Police Chief Paul
McDonagh said the suspect
in custody was a white male
“approximately 26 years of age’’
who was not a student at the
school. McDonagh said his name
would not be released until he’s
booked into jail for investigation
of murder.
The afternoon shooting came
a week before the end of the
school year, and the situation
was particularly tense when
police initially reported that they
were searching for a second
suspect. They later said no one
else was involved.
The university locked down its
campus for several hours, and
it alerted students and staff to
stay inside. Some students were
taking finals in the same building
that the shooter entered. (AP)
PARIS – In her new book, former
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham
Clinton says she pushed President
Barack Obama to lift or ease the
decades-long US embargo on Cuba
because it was no longer useful to
American interests or promoting
change on the communist island.
In excerpts of the book “Hard
Choices’’ obtained by The
Associated Press ahead of its
release next week, Clinton writes
that the embargo has given
communist leaders Fidel and Raul
Castro an excuse not to enact
democratic reforms. And she says
opposition from some in Congress
to normalizing relations – “to keep
Cuba in a deep freeze’’ – has hurt
both the United States and the
Cuban people.
She says the 2009 arrest by Cuba
of USAID contractor Alan Gross
and Havana’s refusal to release
him on humanitarian grounds is a
“tragedy’’ for improving ties.
“Since 1960, the United States
had maintained an embargo
against the island in hopes of
squeezing Castro from power, but
it only succeeded in giving him a
foil to blame for Cuba’s economic
woes,’’ she writes.
She says her husband, former
President Bill Clinton, tried to
improve relations with Cuba in the
1990s, but the Castro government
did not respond to the easing in
some sanctions. Nonetheless,
Obama was determined to continue
the effort, she writes.
She says that late in her term
in office, she urged Obama to
reconsider the US embargo. “It
wasn’t achieving its goals,’’ she
writes, “and it was holding back
our broader agenda across Latin
America. ... I thought we should
shift the onus onto the Castros
to explain why they remained
undemocratic and abusive.’’ (AP)

Hundreds
feared dead
in new Boko
Haram attack
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Hundreds
of people are feared dead in a
suspected Boko Haram attack on
four villages in northeast Nigeria,
in the latest upsurge in violence
claiming increasing numbers of
civilian lives.
Some community leaders put the
death toll from the Tuesday attacks
in the Gwoza district of Borno state
as high as 400 to 500, although there
was no independent verification
because of poor communications in
the remote area.
If confirmed, the attacks in
the villages of Goshe, Attagara,
Agapalwa, and Aganjara would be
among the deadliest in the Islamists’
five-year insurgency and top the
more than 300 who were killed on
May 5 in nearby Gamboru Ngala.
“The killings are massive but
nobody can give a toll for now
because nobody has been able to go
to that place because the insurgents
are still there. They have taken over
the whole area,’’ lawmaker Peter
Biye told AFP.
“There are bodies littered over
the whole area and people have
fled,’’ added Biye, who represents
Gwoza in Nigeria’s lower chamber
of parliament, the House of
Representatives.
Boko Haram’s bloody reign of
terror in northeast Nigeria is forcing
800 people to flee from their homes
every day and has claimed more
than 3,000 lives in the past year, the
Geneva-based Internal Displacement
Monitoring Center (IDMC) said.
Another 45 people were killed
when suspected Boko Haram
gunmen pretending to be itinerant
preachers opened fire on a crowd
in the village of Barderi near the
Borno state capital, Maiduguri, on
Wednesday evening. (AFP)

Cops solve killing
The killing of a 55-year-old barangay administrator in Quezon City
last week is considered solved following the arrest Wednesday night
of the alleged gunman. Chief Supt. Richard A. Albano, Quezon City
Police District (QCPD) director, identified the suspect as Ramon Quillo
Jr., alias “Bunso,” 41, a fish vendor, of 31 Golden Shower St., Barangay
Payatas, Quezon City. Albano said Quillo was nabbed at about 11 p.m.
by barangay watchmen and was taken to the Batasan Police Station
6 shortly after he reportedly fired his gun and created trouble at a
group of teenagers on Morning Star St., Barangay Payatas. Further
investigation by the QCPD Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit
(CIDU) showed that Quillo was tagged behind the killing of Vivien
Yap-de Castro, administrator of Barangay Payatas-A, Quezon City.
Three witnesses, who was with the victim when she was shot dead,
positively identified Quillo as the gunman when he was taken to
the CIDU. (Francis T. Wakefield with Christine Fel Viernes,

LPA spotted near Batanes
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA) spotted a low-pressure area (LPA) 450
kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes yesterday. Weather forecaster
Chris Perez said the LPA has a minimal chance of becoming a tropical
depression but will bring light to moderate rains over the Ilocos
region and Batanes, Calayan, and Babuyan islands. He noted that the
presence of the LPA may pave the way for the southwest monsoon or
“hanging habagat.” “Dahil may LPA na maaaring ito na yung humatak
o magpalakas sa habagat pero hindi pa ito ganun magpapaulan,” Perez
explained. The presence of the southwest monsoon, Perez said, may
officially be the end of summer anytime next week. However, PAGASA
has yet to declare the onset of rainy season as there are conditions
that have to be met. (Chito A. Chavez)
Freelance worker robbed
A 22-year-old freelance worker lost close to R450,000 in cash and
valuables during a robbery-holdup incident while she was on board
a taxi last Wednesday in Quezon City. Reports reaching the Quezon
City Police District (QCPD) Station 9 in Anonas identified the victim
as Camille Georgia Uy, single, of 336 A. San Rafael St., Barangay
San Miguel, Manila. Police said the items taken from the victim
were a Samsung S4 cellphone (R36,000), R400,000 cash, and a red
Seagate backup plus hard drive (R3,000). Investigation disclosed that
the incident happened between 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Katipunan
Extension, Barangay Loyola Heights. (Francis T. Wakefield with

Korean loses R100,000
A 15-year-old Korean lost R100,000 in cash, passports, and credit
cards to thieves while he was buying food at a bakeshop inside a
popular mall in Quezon City last Wednesday. Belated reports reaching
the Quezon City Police District-Criminal Investigation and Detection
Unit (QCPD-CIDU) in Camp Karingal identified the victim as Lee Ryong
Jae, single, student, of Filinvest Village, Quezon City. Police said the
incident reportedly transpired while the victim was inside the SM City
North EDSA annex building on EDSA, Quezon City. It was learned that
the victim was buying food in the bakeshop when four unidentified
persons managed to take his bag. According to the victim, in his bag
were R100,000 cash, $500 cash, three Korean passports, and credit
cards. (Francis T. Wakefield)
For calling Pinoys idiots,
Ghanaian faces deportation
An ill-tempered Ghanaian national is facing deportation for calling “Filipinos
are idiots.”
The angry Benjamin Akomeah
made the unsavory remarks to
an immigration officer at the
Ninoy Aquino Internal Airport
(NAIA) who questioned his travel
documents for Vancouver, Canada
over the weekend.
The 30-year-old alien apparently
resented the delay as he was
traveling with his pregnant Filipina
wife, Kristine Maceda Alingod,
despite being given priority
processing at the BI counter.
When Ma. Lourdes Quidangen,
supervisor of BI’s travel control
and enforcement unit, discovered
that Alingod was not actually his
supposed wife and sponsor for his
temporary resident visa, Akomeah
flared up.
“I even asked if his supposed
wife needed a wheelchair to which
he replied loudly that his wife is
pregnant,” Quidangen said.
Qui d a ng e n s a i d A ko m e a h
grabbed the phone she was
using to verify information on the
foreigner’s immigration status.
“Who are you calling,
Malacañang? Don’t you know who
I am? Do you know who you’re
dealing with?” the Ghanaian was
quoted as saying angrily.
Akomeah reportedly refused
to calm down despite the arrival
of other BI personnel and airport
police officers.
The incident led to Akomeah’s
offloading while his companion
Alingod also voluntarily cancelled
her flight.
BI Commissioner Siegfred B. Mison
assured that “maximum tolerance”
is to be observed by BI officers
and stressed that handcuffing
shall be employed in exceptional
circumstances where an unruly
foreigner tends to become violent
and disruptive of operations.
For verbally assaulting
Quidangen, airport operations
acting chief Ma. Carmelita Vitan
recommended the cancellation of
the temporary resident visa and
blacklisting of Akomeah.
However, a lawyer of Akomeah
claimed that Quidangen and an
unidentified immigration officer
“show abused of their authority
needless to state their malicious
imputation of crime against our
client.”
In a two-page letter to Mison,
the counsel explained that the acts
are clear manifestation that “they
are incompetent to discharge the
functions of their office and thus,
will tarnish the good reputation of
the bureau.”
However, the BI also filed a
complaint for direct assault against
Akomeah before the Pasay City
Prosecutor’s Office for resisting
and intimidating the immigration
officer. (Jun Ramirez)
Zoren denies being a tax cheat
Actor-director Zoren Legaspi
yesterday refuted the allegations
of the Bureau of Internal Revenue
(BIR) that he misdeclared his
taxes in 2010 and 2012, thus
incurring a R4.45-million tax
deficiency.
Legaspi, who directs
GMA television shows like
“Fantastikids,” “Fantastic Man,”
“Wag Kukurap,” and “Atlantika,”
appeared before the Department
of Justice (DoJ) with his lawyer
Ricardo Ribo and submitted
his reply to the charges of the
BIR.
But without admitting any
liability, the actor expressed his
willingness to pay the alleged
unpaid taxes that the BIR are
claiming.
“If there was a mistake on
the part of the respondent in
providing data therefore, there
never was any fraudulent attempt
to deceive or an intentional
commission of fraud,” Legaspi
said in his nine-page counteraffidavit.
In a complaint filed last May 8,
BIR Commissioner Kim Henares
said that his misdeclaration
of income was in violation of
Sections 254 and 255 of the
National Internal Revenue Code
of 1997 or Tax Code as amended.

54 NPA rebels yield in Bukidnon
CAMP BANCASI, Butuan City – Fifty-four New People’s Army rebels
surrendered with their firearms to government troops on Thursday at
Camp Osito Bahian in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon province.
According to Major Christian C. Uy, spokesman of the Army’s 4th
Infantry (Diamond) Division (4th ID), said the rebel returnees belong
to the Guerilla-Front Committee 34 of the CPP-NPA North-Central
Mindanao Party Committee under certain Emboy Casal Gayaw, aka
“Rixan”.
Uy said the surrenderees used to operate in the boundaries of Agusan, Bukidnon and Davao provinces.
The rebels’ surrender was made possible through the efforts of the
ground troops of the 8th Infantry “Dependable” Battalion (8th IB)
under Lt. Col. Raymund Landingin.
The surrenderees brought with them a Thompson, three US M1
Carbine, a US M1 Garand rifle, a US Springfield M1, three .22-caliber

Protesting cops shave heads
CAMP GENERAL SIMEON OLA, Legazpi City – Members of Monreal
Municipal Police Station shaved their heads on Thursday as a show
of protest after the electricity supply to their post was cut off allegedly upon the order of the town mayor.
A report reaching the office of Chief Superintendent Victor P. Deona, Bicol Police director, said that Monreal Mayor Ben Espiloy cut
off the power supply to the Monreal Police Station after its chief,
Police Senior Inspector Ignacio Suarilla III, refused to grant the local executive’s request to detain an arrested drug pusher in an airconditioned room.
On May 28, Monreal police arrested one Aproniano Escorel Jr., 36,
a habal-habal driver, for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002.
It was learned that Suarilla granted the mayor’s request on the
first day but not on the second day of detention since the suspect
must be committed to the municipal jail as per order of the court.
As a result of Surilla’s refusal, Espiloy reportedly ordered the disconnection of the power supply to the town’s municipal police station. This forced the policemen to hold their office in a nipa hut on
a lot owned by Philippine National Police.
According to Malu Calubaquib, Bicol police spokesperson, the
electricity bill of the police station is being paid by the local government.
In an interview, Deona said that he has already called the attention of Suarilla to report immediately to his office and bring all
necessary documents and evidence regarding the arrest.
According to Deona, a case will be filed soon against Mayor Espiloy for obstruction of justice.
“It’s just like the police don’t exist in that town, so better we will
withdraw the deputation,” Deona said. (Niño Luces)

Tobacco trader,
helper shot dead
CURRIMAO, Ilocos Norte – A tobacco businessman and his helper
were gunned down early yesterday morning by motorcycle-riding
armed men along national highway
in Barangay Lang-ayan, Currimao
town.
Senior Superintendent Antonio
Mendoza Jr., Ilocos Norte police
director, identified the slain victims
as Norbert Arce, 34, a trader from
Vigan City, and his helper Elmar
Agdeppa, a resident of Barangay
Rang-ay, Sinait, Ilocos Sur.
Police investigation showed that
the victims, aboard a 4x4 vehicle,
had just delivered tobacco to a
warehouse in Barangay Billoca,
Batac City, when they were fired
upon by unidentified armed men
at about 3 a.m. yesterday
Arce died on the spot while Agdeppa was declared dead upon
reaching the hospital.
Mendoza said that Scene of the
Crime Operatives (SOCO) recovered at the crime scene eight spent
shells from .45-caliber pistol.
The police official said that investigators have already established a
lead that would identify the suspects but he did not elaborate
pending the result of validation of
the footages culled from the CCTV
camera installed near the warehouse where the victims delivered
the tobacco product.
Before the incident, it was reported that there were motorcycleriding men observing the movement of the victims while inside the
warehouse.
Police said robbery could be the
motive behind the shooting incident
as large amount of cash believed
to the cost of the tobacco product
delivered by the victims was missing. (Freddie G. Lazaro)
Probe sought over DJ’s
death in water falls accident
GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The
family of a 22-year-old FM disc
jockey and former beauty queen
who died after a stone fell on her
head while taking pictures of the
scenic Lake Sebu water falls in
South Cotabato last Wednesday,
has asked for an investigation of
the freak accident.
Ayana Grico, DJ of Kiss FM and
2011 Miss General Santos first runner-up, died after she was hit on
the head by a stone that fell from
the Seven Falls at the Lake Sebu.
Shandee Mae Pagco, who was
with the victim during the incident,
said they encroached into the restricted area of the water falls for
picture taking session.
While they were taking pictures,
she noticed that some rocks were
falling from the top of the water
falls.
“I heard a loud impact and saw
Ayana with blood oozing from her
head as she fell into the waters,”
Pagco said.
Resort guests tried to rescue
the victim who was declared dead
while on the way to Lake Sebu municipal hospital.
Ruth Grico, the victim’s mother,
said the management of Lake
Sebu Seven Falls, one of the leading tourist destinations in South
Cotabato, should be held liable for
the freak accident which led to her
daughter’s death.
The resort management is said
to be under the provincial tourism
office of South Cotabato.
“There could be some negligence
on the part of the management
which failed to ensure the safety
of the people who visit the resort,”
Grico said.
South Cotabato police director
Jose Briones said the freak incident
should serve as an eye opener for
the resort management and stakeholders to ensure the safety of local
and foreign tourists who visit the
scenic falls and zip line in the area.
He said the management should
put warning signs in areas which
are restricted to visitors. (Joseph

rebel group Thursday in Maguindanao.
Col. Dickson Hermoso, the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID)
spokesman, said soldiers from
the 45th Infantry Battalion (45IB)
were passing by Barangay Maitumaig in Datu Unsay town, Maguindanao around 12:45 p.m. when a
roadside bomb exploded.
The blast hit the soldiers’ vehicle, resulting in one killed in action
(KIA) and injuring three others.
A pursuit operation was immedi-
ately launched against a group of
BIFF men believed to have set off
the roadside bomb.
At about 5 p.m., the government
troops caught up with the BIFF
rebels led by one alias “Bongos”
at the vicinity of Barangay Meta,
Datu Unsay.
Hermoso said an hour-long
firefight ensued before the rebels
fled. Two BIFF gunmen were killed
in the clash.
The 6ID spokesman added,
barangay officials are still verifying the identities of the slain BIFF
men. (Elena L. Aben)

Music vs rumor
HERE we were, the graying concert-going generation, milling
about the lobby of Francisco Santiago
Hall, every one wondering when the
miracle had come about and why no
one could give us any information,
none whatsoever. Two days of sleuthing later, there was still no way to
break the secret. Why would BDO or
its employees refuse to divulge any
news about the renovation of an auditorium that in its used and overused
state over many years had caused
concert goers, performers, and critics
so much grief and hand-wringing?
Finally, the answer came from the
most obvious source, the one hiding in
plain sight, the musician-businessman
who had provided, in the first place,
the piano and “imported” the pianist
from Russia. The spanking new Santiago Hall in BDO’s Makati headquarters, according to flutist Rey Sison (he
is exclusive distributor of Europeanmade pianos, the more exclusive the
better), has been spanking new since
2012. Oh my, and no one in our circle
had known about the renovation for
two years? Was it the power of a vicious rumor that had kept us away,
the rumor that said the shabbiest
auditorium – creaking chairs, uneven
floor, peeling paint, unladylike ladies’
room – was doomed to give way to a
canteen because the new owners had
no musical sense?
How happy we were to prove the
rumormongers wrong! Although two
years “old,” the newly refurbished hall
is now almost unrecognizable. Bright
lights and airy spacing, newly reupholstered chairs, the wooden floor
scraped clean of grime and refinished,
carpets overhauled, airconditioner totally functioning, a glass cube of an
elevator for senior citizens’ comfort
and convenience – what more could
we ask? Even the piano, manufactured by a little-known family bearing
the Kayersburg brand and designed
by the legendary Swiss-German Lothar Thomma, was a heavensent that
night as it gleamed perfectly under the
lights and enhanced the flawless, effortless playing by Sofya Gulyak.
Without a playbill, I recognized only
the first number, Wagner-Liszt’s Pilgrims’ Chorus from Tannheuser, but
it didn’t matter. My heart was singing
the rest of the evening, and so were
my friends’, now that we know musicians have another home, a handsome
and worthy one, to provide us melody,
meditation, and enchantment.

New mechanisms
to protect seafarers
MENDMENTS to the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) adopted by the
International Labour Organization (ILO) on February 7, 2006 were developed
by a Joint Working Group formed by ILO and International Maritime Organization to
review MLC 2006. The proposals were adopted by over 300 representatives of the
tripartite maritime groups – seafarers, shipowners, and governments – and would be
sent for approval to the ILO International Labour Conference in May, 2014.
By adopting new mechanisms, the tripartite body built on the success of MLC
2006 and enhanced its provisions to ensure a level playing field for quality shipping
worldwide. Steps were institutionalized to protect abandoned seafarers and provide
for funding to pay parties in cases of death and disability from occupational injury
or hazard.
ILO assured relief and peace of mind to abandoned seafarers and their families
wherever they may be, citing that the latest step to tackle crew abandonment is a
significant and inspiring move. As of March, 2014, ILO’s Abandonment of Seafarers
Database listed 159 unresolved abandoned merchant ships, some dating back to
2006. The new measures will guarantee that seafarers are not abandoned, alone and
legally adrift for months on end, without pay, adequate food and water, and away
from home. Ships are required to carry certificates or other documents to establish
financial security to provide seafarers with outstanding wages while working on board
as well as repatriation and other costs until they arrive home. Failure to provide this
protection may mean that a ship can be detained in a port.
MLC 2006 came into force on August 20, 2013, to ensure the protection and
welfare of 1.2 million world’s seafarers, including the 400,000 Filipino workers in
international and domestic shipping. Adopted during the 94th ILO Convention in
Geneva, Switzerland, on February 7, 2006, it is an international agreement under
which countries and territories, including employers, observe, protect, and promote
the standards of seafarers’ working condition. To date, 57 ILO Member-States,
representing over 80% of world’s gross tonnage of ships, have ratified MLC 2006.
The Philippines was the 30th ILO member-state that ratified it on August 20, 2012,
through adoption by Malacañang and concurrence by Philippine Senate. Filipino
seafarers comprise 30% of 1.2 million seafarers worldwide. They man ships at sea
– from luxury cruise ships to giant oil tankers and rigs and container ships.

Dear Manay Gina
Gina de Venecia
Love hurts
Dear Manay Gina,
I think I’m finally in love. My
man has a strong personality
but he is responsible and can
be very lovable. The only thing
going against him is his bad
temper. Every time he is feeling
insecure, depressed, or upset
about something, he takes it out
on me. Well, maybe because I
am the one who is always with
him. Do you think he will still
change? He’s 35. What should
I do?
Lolit
Dear Lolit,
You should take violence, verbal
or otherwise, very seriously. It is
extremely dangerous to place
yourself at the whim of another
person’s mood because you
constantly have to think about
how you can please him. That is
not fair, and you deserve more.
So, address this issue, once and
for all. And if he will not reform,
leave him and take the time to
love yourself. Real love does
not wish to hurt. In the Bible,
the book of Corinthians, chapter
13, verses 4 to 7 say that “Love
is patient, love is kind. It does
not envy, it does not boast, it is
not proud. It does not dishonor
others, it is not self-seeking, it is
not easily angered, and it keeps
no record of wrongs. Love does
not delight in evil but rejoices
with the truth. It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, and
always perseveres.”
Real love is anything but pain!
Affectionately,
Manay Gina

France – Veterans and Normandy residents are paying
tribute to the thousands who
gave their lives in the D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied France
70 years ago.
As the Sun rose Friday over
Omaha Beach, flags flew at
half-staff. Hundreds of people
gathered to remember the largest amphibious invasion in history, on June 6, 1944.
Veterans joined soldiers serv-

By 2020, roughly, the metro
area is predicted to reach 30M
people. Expect toxic garbage,
traffic, crime, floods, grime and
dangerous levels in the air our
children will breathe. Thank
God, politicians will inhale the
same pollution! This will also
result, like this class opening, to additional water closets turned into classrooms?
Exploding student enrollees
hence – recalibrating student
to class ratio? Teacher to student ratio? Accommodating
morning, afternoon, evening
slots for classes, if not 3 day
classes? On the national level
regarding K to 12 (basic education – kindergarten plus 12
years of grade school with Junior and Senior High School),
the late former Vice President
Salvador Laurel always had a
saying when I was working
for him, “When the kitchen is
on fire, you do not have the
luxury to choose what’s for
dinner”. The government bit
more than it could chew on
what may be a commendable
program. Did we not (and
still do) have a huge problem
with the lack of classrooms
and teachers nationwide? We
debated about the priority of
whether to spend the small
budgetary pie on first fixing
the back-log on classrooms,
or teachers. I chose the latter. Solve the requirement
for teachers nationwide, then
even like Christ under a tree,
our children will learn. Classrooms to follow. K-12 may be
shoe-horned later on. Here in
Negros Oriental listening to a
popular radio program, majority of reactors (text and mostly by phone) were dissident
with K-12. “If the middle class
is even complaining about the
added cost, how about majority of the marginalized in our
society?”
It is this disciple who
testifies to these things and
has written them, and we
know that his testimony is
true. There are also many
other things that Jesus did,
but if these were to be
described individually, I do
not think the whole world
would contain the books that
would be written.
Reflections
LORD, WHAT ABOUT HIM?
Peter asks what will happen
to the Beloved Disciple.
Peter has been warned of
his suffering.
Will John experience the
same fate? Jesus replies by
telling Peter to focus on his
own discipleship.
I n J o h n ’s c o m m u n i t y, i t
was perhaps believed that
Jesus would soon return and
find the Beloved Disciple
still alive. But by the time
the gospel was written, the
Beloved Disciple must have
already died. And so the
e va n g e l i s t c l a r i f i e s : J e s u s
did not say that the disciple
would not die.
The Gospel concludes with
the author’s declaration that
there are many other things
that Jesus did that are not
included in the book, an
echo of the first ending (cf Jn
20:30-31). But what is written
is enough to solicit faith that
Jesus is the Messiah, the Son
of God, and the end result of
this faith is eternal life.
Hence, John’s gospel is not
strictly a biography of Jesus,
but a proclamation of faith in
him intended to awaken faith
in other people. It is a record
of testimonies of those who
came to know Jesus. Above
all this, it is the witness of
the Beloved Disciple.
* * *
Jesus continues to speak
and be present to us
through the gospels.
Let us believe the gospels
and make them our
guide to eternal life.

Marian also has one or two

Then there's a thousand and

Does Marian have the time to

Well, Marian manages to find

A few hours of rest and sleep

PROMOTED AS DIRECTOR:
After surviving a near fatal attack on
his life by a disgruntled lover, former
actor Ricky Rivero considers himself
semi-retired in the game of lost and
found love, and lust.
More focused on his career this
time, Ricky is finally promoted to
full-fledged director status via revived
TV series, "Ipaglaban Mo," which
premieres on ABS-CBN on June 7
(Saturday) after "Showtime."
At the program's media launch
held recently, Ricky was introduced
formally as one of four directors
handling the legal drama series. He
joins a list that also includes veteran
directors Eric Quizon, Lino Cayetano,
Erik Salud, and Rechie del Carmen.
Ricky is thankful that his time as a
TV director has finally come. Before
"Ipaglaban Mo," he served as second
unit director to many an established
TV director, whom he considers his
mentors.
"Ipaglaban Mo" also marks the
return of Lino Cayetano, now a
congressman representing Taguig,
as a director. Cayetano says he can't
say no to the comebacking show for
sentimental reasons. He cut his milk
teeth as a TV director on the show.
"Ipaglaban's" maiden episode on
BEA Alonzo as Emmanuelle Romero (left) and Rose Buenavista
its return narrates how a young boy
aCCidentally kills his nanny after firing
a gun. Atty. Jose Sison is joined by his
son Atty. Jopet, in hosting the show,
which ran for a long time between the
late 80s and early 90s on Channel 2.

BY THE WAY ... Bea Alonzo was
close to levitating at the presscon of
her new series, "Sana Bukas Pa ang
Kahapon."
Two of her co-stars, Susan Roces
and Dina Bonnevie, professed their
admiration for the actress whose
career, they said, they followed
closely.
"I never missed any of her films,"
said Dina.
For her part, Susan said Bea is
admirable for doing the most decent
of kissing scenes. The actress couldn't
believe what she was hearing, but
nonetheless said afterwards that
that's just the way she does it, even
RICKY Rivero
off-screen?
Meanwhile, the media
department of ABS-CBN declared
Bea a movie queen. Susan agreed
wholeheartedly.
"Sana Bukas Pa ang Kahapon," set
to premiere on June 16, stars Albert
Martinez, Paulo Avelino, Eddie Garcia,
among others.
Liam Payne sorry for leaked video
ONE Direction's Liam Payne recently took to Twitter to express
regret over the leaked video showing Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlison
allegedly smoking marijuana.
"I love my boys and maybe things have gone a little sideways 1
apologize for that," Payne wrote on Sunday in a series of tweets.
He reasoned, "We are only in our 20's we all do stupid things
at this age."
Although he added that he and his band mates "all have a lot
of growing up to do in an extreme circumstance," he pointed out
that it's not an "excuse."
Payne hopes that they will get over the debacle in time.
He made clear that they're not taking their celeb status "for

this."
Payne thanked everyone who continue to support the band
saying, " ...just know that we love you guys for it and it means the
world." (Pau Aguilera/mb.com.ph)

Cayabyab mounts benefit concert
to rebuild typhoon-hit churches
“MUSIC heals. It heals the hurt, the sadness and
loss of loved ones. Music rebuilds confidence, as
well as rebuilds our places of worship destroyed
by nature’s wrath.” These were the resounding
words of Maestro Ryan Cayabyab to herald his
forthcoming benefit concert featuring sacred music for the reconstruction of churches and chapels
in Yolanda-hit Samar and Leyte.
Papal awardee Cayabyab, in
partnership with Caritas Manila,
is set to hold “Rise! Rebuilding
from the Ruins” which aims
to collect around R20 million
to reconstruct 20 churches in
the two Visayan provinces that
were gravely hit by Yolanda last
year.
Both celebrating 60 years of
life, Cayabyab and Caritas Manila will collaborate with the
country’s leading orchestras,
choirs, and renowned vocalists
on the concert set June 11 at
the newly-renovated and reopened Manila Cathedral with
participation of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal
Tagle.
The concert will feature Basil Valdez, Dulce, Jed Madela, Mezzo-Soprano Clarissa
Ocampo, and Ervin Lumauag
together with seven Philippinebased choirs, Voices of Aloha
from the University of Hawaii
and the Philippine Philharmonic
Orchestra.
According to Esther Santos,
president of the PLDT-Smart
Foundation, in a media press
conference Tuesday, the Maestro came up with the benefit
performance in February over
lunch of “sinigang” in return
for all the blessings he received
including the Papal Award Pro
Ecclesia et Pontifice for his sacred works.
The event will also serve as
a fulfillment of the Maestro’s
dream to have a 100-member
orchestra. “It was a dream of
mine, that one day, I would
have about a 100-voice choir

ABS-CBN wins Grand Stevie Award
ABS-CBN recently bagged a
Grand Stevie Award at the prestigious Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards,
making it the only Filipino company to receive the highest honor
out of five companies in the region
during its gala awards banquet in
Seoul, South Korea.
The Grand Stevie Award not

the most entries this year. Other
Grand Stevie Award winners were
companies from Australia, Indonesia, South Korea, and Singapore.
The Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards
recognized ABS-CBN’s business
achievements in the past year,
most especially its efforts to provide public service to Filipinos by
launching the “Tulong Na, Tabang
Na, Tayo Na” campaign that included initiatives such as the sell-
ing of Tulong shirts, star-studded
Tulong fund-raising concerts to
help the victims of typhoon Yolanda, and conducting relief and rehabilitation efforts for the victims
of typhoon Pablo, Zamboanga crisis, and Bohol quake.
At the banquet, Santos-Concio
also personally received the Gold

Beastie Boys
wins $1.7
million in
copyright case
vs Monster
Beverage
BEASTIE Boys’ fight for their right to not let Monster Beverage Corp use the hip-hop group’s music
without their permission resulted in a verdict of $1.7
million on Thursday.
A federal jury in Manhattan issued the verdict on
the eighth day of trial in a copyright dispute between
members of the Brooklyn-born band and the energy
drink maker over songs the band says Monster used
without a license in a 2012 promotional video.
The Beastie Boys had sought up to $2.5 million for
copyright infringement and false endorsement.
Monster countered that it owed no more than
$125,000, calling the case “illogical” and saying an
employee had mistakenly believed the company had
permission to use the music.
Beastie Boys members Adam Horovitz, or “AdRock,” and Michael Diamond, or “Mike D,” attended
much of the trial and both testified. After the verdict
was read, Horovitz hugged his wife, musician Kathleen Hanna.
“We’re happy,” Horovitz said after the hearing. “We
just want to thank the jury.”
Reid Kahn, a lawyer for Monster, said the company
would appeal.
Filed in August 2012, the lawsuit centered on an
online video promoting an annual snowboarding
competition the company organizes and sponsors in
Canada called “Ruckus in the Rockies.”
The video, which Monster uploaded to YouTube,
featured the competition and an after-party attended
by DJs, including Z-Trip. It included a remix by ZTrip of Beastie Boys songs, including “Sabotage,” “So
Watcha Want” and “Make Some Noise.” (Reuters)

Fine start by Lefty
MEMPHIS (AFP) – Phil Mickelson,
building momentum for next week’s
US Open, birdied three of his last
four holes Thursday to fire a threeunder par 67 at the storm-hit PGA
St. Jude Classic.
The 43-year-old American lefthander, a five-time major champion,
can complete a career grand slam
with a victory in next week’s major
championship at Pinehurst.
But Mickelson has a history of
heartache at the event, having finished second a record six times, the
first of those coming at Pinehurst in
1999.
That’s why Mickelson, who began
his round off the 10th tee, was so
happy with his finishing flourish.
“Finishing the round the way I did,
it’s what I needed to do,’’ Mickelson
said. “It’s the kind of momentum I

American Ben Crane held the

Peter Malnati was in the clubhouse

Retief Goosen of South Africa on 66

Among 60 players unable to complete the round, the low score belonged to American Billy Horschel,
who was five-under with two holes
to finish.
Australian Stuart Appleby was on
four-under with one hole remaining, with Zach Johnson on the same
spot with three holes to play and
Jason Bohn also at four-under with
four holes to finish.
Mickelson birdied the par-5 16th

a bogey, rolling a putt 10 feet past

“That was a touch issue and it’s
something I’ll have to work on to

He followed a bogey at the second with a birdie at the par-5 third,
but then responded with a five-foot
birdie putt at the sixth, a seven-footer at the par-3 eighth and a closing
12-footer at the par-4 ninth.
Goosen, another major winner
warming up the week before Pinehurst, began on the back nine and
ran off three birdies in a row starting at 13. He added another at 17
after sticking a second shot from
the right rough five feet from the

Sharapova
storms into
French final
PARIS (AP) – Might be
easier said than done. Still,
Maria Sharapova offered a tidy
aphorism to sum up the formula
that’s carried her to a third
consecutive French Open final.
“It’s not how you finish a first
set,” Sharapova said, “it’s how
you finish the last set.”
Right now, no one is a better
closer than she is on clay. Nearing
a second championship at Roland
Garros, and fifth Grand Slam
trophy overall, Sharapova gritted
her way to yet another comeback
victory, beating 18th-seeded
Eugenie Bouchard of Canada
4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals
Thursday.
“If some things are not working
out, I don’t just want to quit in
the middle. Because when you
lose the first set or a few games
or you’re down a break, that’s
not the end of the match,”
Sharapova said. “That’s the type
of philosophy that I play with.”
She famously described herself
years ago as feeling like a “cow
on ice” on clay, but Sharapova
now has won her past 19 matches
that went to three sets on the
demanding surface.
In Saturday’s final, the No. 7seeded Sharapova will face No.
4 Simona Halep, a 22-year-old
Romanian who never before had
been past the quarterfinals at a
major. Halep turned in a much
more straightforward victory
than Sharapova, eliminating No.
28 Andrea Petkovic of Germany
6-2, 7-6 (4).
“I have a lot of confidence in
myself now,” said Halep, who a
year ago was ranked only 57th
and lost in the first round in Paris
for the third time since 2010. “I
played really well here; a few
good matches. But next round
will be very tough. I know Maria.
She’s a great champion.”
She is 0-3 against Sharapova.
But Halep has claimed seven
titles since the start of last season
— “Impressive 12 months,” she
called it — and used her smooth
movement and smart angles to
win all 12 sets she’s played these
two weeks.
Sharapova took a more difficult
route to her ninth Grand Slam
final.
In the fourth round against
2011 U.S. Open champion
Samantha Stosur, Sharapova
trailed 6-3, 4-3, then won the
last nine games.
In the quarterfinals against
20-year-old Garbine Muguruza,
the woman who stunned Serena
Williams last week, Sharapova
trailed 6-1, 5-4, then won nine
of the last 10 games.
That pattern continued against
another 20-year-old, Bouchard.
After dropping the first set, then
standing two games from defeat
at 5-all in the second, Sharapova
won eight of the last 10 games.
She did it by playing aggressively
in crunch time, risking more but
also coming through more. After
Bouchard’s ability to take the ball
early helped her build a 13-8
edge in winners in the first set,
Sharapova had a 25-16 edge in
that category over the last two,
celebrating most by shaking her
left fist and crying, “Come on!”
“She kind of elevated her
game a little bit,” said Bouchard,
who had been 9-0 in Grand
Slam matches when winning the
opening set.
This was only Bouchard’s fifth
major tournament, her second in
a row reaching the semifinals.
Less than two years ago,
Bouchard was at the junior
level, winning the Wimbledon
girls’ title.
“She is literally just scratching
the surface,” said Nick Saviano,
Bouchard’s coach. “She can play
a much, much higher level as
she goes along. She’s going to
get faster. She’s going to get
stronger.”
The 27-year-old Sharapova
already owns a career Grand
Slam, with titles at Wimbledon in
2004, the U.S. Open in 2006, the
Australian Open in 2008, and the
French Open two years ago.
And for someone who used to
have a hard time on clay, she is
53-4 with six titles on it since
the start of 2012; three of those
losses came against Williams,
including in the 2013 French
Open final.
RUSSIA’S Maria Sharapova celebrates winning the semifinal match of the French Open tennis
tournament against Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard at the Roland Garros stadium, in Paris, France,
Thursday, June 5, 2014. Sharapova won in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. (AP)
“Sharapova does a good job
of trying to stay in the moment,”
Saviano said. “She’s got a lot of
experience and a lot of fight. And
she’s been around a long time.”
Sharapova put aside various
problems she had Thursday,
including nine double-faults, two
that wasted set points at 5-3 in
the second. She showed terrific
defense and court coverage
when it counted most, forcing
Bouchard to hit extra shots.
Most important, at 2-1 in
both the second and third sets,
Bouchard raced to 40-love leads
on her serve, only to have
Sharapova steel herself and wind
up breaking.
“I didn’t feel that I was playing
my best,” Sharapova said. “I
fought, I scrambled, and I found
a way to win.”
Strikes peril
holding of
World Cup
SAO PAULO (AP) – World Cup
organizers have fretted for a year
over the possibility that a resurgence of mass anti-government
protests could mar soccer’s premiere event.
Yet in recent weeks Brazil’s public sector has become the main
worry. A series of strikes by public
transport workers, police, teachers and others across the country
is proving more disruptive than
protests, and some fear they could
cause chaos during the tournament that begins in a week.
On Thursday, subway and commuter train operators went on
strike in Sao Paulo, just one week
before Brazil’s biggest city hosts
the World Cup’s opening match.
Authorities are counting on the
subway to be main way that soccer fans get to Itaquerao stadium
for the game.
Striking teachers in Rio de Janeiro blocked main roads during
the evening rush hour, snarling
traffic in that city.
If such strikes continue, “there
will be chaos during the World
Cup,’’ said Carla Dieguez, a sociologist at Sao Paulo University’s
School of Sociology and Politics.
“What we don’t know is how
long the strike will last and if
workers in others cities where
games will be held will also go on
strike,’’ she said about the subway
and train strike.
A two-day walkout in April by
state police officers in the northeastern World Cup host city of
Salvador led to a spike in homicides and robberies. One week
earlier a police strike in the city of
Fortaleza, also a World Cup host,
brought widespread looting during two days.
Last month, a 48-hour strike
by Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro
bus drivers left hundreds of thousands of people unable to get to
and from work, while civil police
in 14 states went on a 24-hour
work stoppage demanding higher
wages.
The police strike affected at
least six cities that will host World
Cup games: Rio de Janeiro, Sao
Paulo, Salvador, Manaus, Recife
and Belo Horizonte.
Federal police agents, who
oversee immigration at international airports, and state police officers responsible for keeping order on the streets have said they

The authorities and courts
haven’t shown any ability to force
public workers in services essential to the World Cup to show up
for their jobs.
Late Wednesday a judge had
ordered Sao Paulo’s train operators to work at full capacity during rush hours and at 70 percent capacity in off hours. Union
members voted to go ahead with
the strike anyway, disdaining the
judge’s order that the union be
fined $44,000 each day it ignores
the ruling.
The union said on its website
the strike would continue until officials met its demand for a pay

The potential trouble from

health system and public transit
have widespread problems.

Triathletes train in Portugal Wie ties
Four senior triathletes are
scheduled for an intense onemonth training in Rio Major, Portugal in preparation for the 17th

Triathletes Claire Adorna, Kim
Mangrobang, Nikko Huelgas and
John Chicano will enter a 31-day
training camp from Aug. 20 to
Sept. 21 where they will be supervised by Portuguese coach Sergio
Santos, a renowned International
Triathlon Union (ITU) coach.
While the Asian Games will
formally open on Sept. 19, the
triathlon event is scheduled from
Sept. 25 to 26, giving them extra
time to prepare. From Portugal,
they will fly directly to Incheon
for the competition.
Aside from Santos, the four
triathletes will also be mentored
by local coach George Vilog during their stay in Portugal. Former
national team member and now
coach Ani De Leon Brown will join
the PH squad in Incheon.
“This is the same camp and
coach that we used for the training of the Youth Olympic Games
aspirants recently,” said Triathlon Association of the Philippines
(TRAP) president Tom Carrasco.
The triathlon team will have
a busy schedule in the coming months leading to the Asian
Games.
Prior to the Portugal training,
the team is scheduled to compete
in the Taipei Triathlon in Taiwan
on June 14, and the Singapore
International Triathlon on July 6
to 7. They will train locally after
15
the Singapore race before flying
to Portugal and joining Santos.
Carrasco said Portugal is the
best place for the team’s preparation because aside from training
under a high performance coach
in Santos, the weather is also
similar to that of Incheon when
the race starts.
“By that time, summer na sa
Korea, so wala tayong problema

said Carrasco.
Carrasco said the team aims to

Asian Games, knowing fully well
the competitiveness of the sport

Violent clashes between young

Park began a bogey-free stroll

Heat no problem for Spurs

SAN ANTONIO (AP) – The San
Antonio Spurs handled the Heat,
and the heat, during a sweltering
start to the NBA Finals.
Tim Duncan had 21 points and
10 rebounds, and the Spurs beat
Miami 110-95 on Thursday night
in Game 1 inside a steamy AT&T
Center.
With an air conditioning failure
making it feel like basketball in a
sauna and causing LeBron James
to battle cramps that knocked
him out of the game’s decisive
stretch, the Spurs pulled away to
win the opener of the first finals
rematch since 1998.
Manu Ginobili had 16 points
and 11 assists, and Tony Parker
added 19 points and eight assists
for the Spurs, who shot 59 percent and improved to 6 for 6 in
NBA Finals Game 1s.
They host Game 2 on Sunday
– likely in cooler conditions.
James finished with 25 points
but played only 33 minutes, and
Miami was outscored 36-17 in the
fourth quarter.
Dwyane Wade scored 19 points
and Chris Bosh had 18 for the
Heat, who wilted in temperatures
that soared to 90 degrees in the
second half.
“It was tough on both teams,’’
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
“They were pretty dead. We tried
to get guys in and out. ... It was
really hot out there.’’
James, who had cramping issues two years ago in the finals,
had to ask for a break in the
fourth quarter and was getting
treatment during a 15-4 Spurs run
that turned around the game.
“It felt like a punch in the gut
when you see your leader limping
to bench like that. But we still had
a chance after that,’’ Heat coach
Erik Spoelstra said.
James came back in and made
a basket that cut it to two points
with about 4 minutes left, but
couldn’t even run back on defense, promptly putting his hand
up and lingering at the baseline
until help arrived to take him off
for good.
Danny Green followed with 3pointer to trigger what became a
16-3 run to end the game.
“You could see the heat was
getting to a lot of guys. If I
played as many minutes as he
did, I’d probably be cramping up, too,’’ said Green, who
scored 11 of his 13 points in the
final quarter.
The crowd chanted ‘’Beat the
Heat! Beat the Heat!’’ late in the
game, which was just what the
fans themselves were trying to
do.
The Spurs said an electrical
failure for the power that runs
the air conditioning system had
occurred. They apologized for the
inconvenience but also seemed
to poke fun of it, playing songs
with ‘’hot’’ in the lyrics over the
sound system.
Fans were trying to cool themselves on the hot night, a reminder of what it was like in the old
Boston Garden when the Celtics
and Lakers got together.
The Heat are the first team since
those Celtics of 1984-87 to get to
four straight finals. They are wellrested after a relatively easy roll
through the Eastern Conference
playoffs, a key to keeping Wade
healthy entering the finals.
James was the MVP of the series last year when the Heat rallied from five points down in the
final half-minute of regulation to
win Game 6 in overtime, then
won a Game 7 that was close
the whole way for their second
straight championship.
A rematch was widely anticipated and was close almost throughout. The Heat led 86-79 after
Bosh’s four-point play with 9:38
remaining in the game, but it was
all San Antonio from there.
The Spurs ended up extending
their NBA-record straight to eight
straight home playoff wins by 15
or more points.
Bosh, scoreless in Game 7 last
year, scored Miami’s first five
points in the Heat’s 7-2 start. But
Ginobili came off the bench firing,
making consecutive 3-pointers for
an 18-13 lead.
Wade and James combined for
six straight points before Ginobili
made another 3, and Patty Mills
added one to close the first-quarter scoring and give the Spurs a
26-20 advantage.
The Spurs committed nine
turnovers while managing only
20 points in the third quarter, and
Miami led 78-74 heading to the
fourth.
Notes: James joined Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as the only players with
4,000 points and 1,000 assists in the postseason. ...
Ray Allen moved past Bryant
and Derek Fisher into second
place on the career list with
49 3-pointers in the NBA Finals. Robert Horry, a former
Spurs forward, is the leader
with 56.
