We began in January with the release of 28 sea turtles into the warm and welcoming waters of the Gulf of Mexico. These cold-stunned turtles were rehabilitated here at Audubon thanks to your support of Audubon’s rescue and rehabilitation initiatives. As the year drew to a close, you celebrated with us as Audubon Zoo’s endangered orangutans took up residence in their new exhibit, with From the President 2 features for climbing, swinging, children could ever see on an exploring and watching the electronic screen. world from one of the tallest points in the Zoo. The Zoo’s Bird Department staff hand-raised the little chick as the parents were inexperienced and unable to properly care for it. CONSERVATION 8 Conservation Field Projects Audubon animal experts traveled the world for conservation causes, including managing endangered iguanas in Jamacia and protecting endangered Pacific birds on the Marianas Islands. Today’s conservation is dynamic, bursting with ideas splashed throughout the world via social media platforms, games and mobile phone apps. Audubon Nature Institute dives into all of is right along In 2015, Audubon collaborated on conservation projects with: • African Wild Dog Conservation Network • Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance with you. • Zoo Conservation Outreach Group Together, we are leaders in conservation programs effecting • Fauna and Flora International meaningful change, fighting to • Giant Armadillo Project secure the future of wildlife. • Giraffe Conservation Foundation From efforts right here in New Orleans to projects on the ground • Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program (and in the water) in far-flung corners • Gopher Frog Conservation of our globe, Audubon leads and • Hornbill Research Foundation—Nest Adoptions in Thailand challenges others (including you!) to do the same, giving back through web-based and hands-on initiatives, bringing Louisiana and the world together through the generosity of friends and supporters like you. These projects make a tangible difference for wildlife and give us hope. • Hutan Palm Oil Initiative • International Elephant Foundation • Lemur Conservation Program • Louisiana Pine Snake Program 9 Audubon Nature Institute Annual Report 2015 There’s just something about our local culture—it’s unlike any you’ll find anywhere else in the world. And, it has quite a bit to do with our inherent natural wonders, our fascinating wildlife, and our incredible seafood. Audubon Nature Institute made conservation fun and tasty with Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries (G.U.L.F.). A new app helps you find the freshest, most sustainable seafood to keep our Gulf fisheries thriving. Restaurant partners multiplied in 2015 as G.U.L.F. recruited more New Orleans eateries to serve and support sustainable seafood, while an intimate dinner at the Aquarium showcased G.U.L.F. partner chefs and featured the best sustainable seafood the Gulf of Mexico has to offer. These dinners are set to continue and expand in 2016. CONSERVATION 10 Audubon Zoo veterinary staff released a brown pelican into the wild after treating the bird for exposure to an oily substance it encountered in the Gulf of Mexico. The Zoo’s orangutans celebrated Orangutan Caring Week in their new, expanded exhibit featuring a waterfall and a 45-foot climbing pole to take in the world. Flippers flapping, an endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle swam back into the sea near Grand Isle after being rehabilitated by Audubon Nature Institute. Six endangered Mississippi sandhill cranes hatched at Audubon Nature Institute and were released at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge in Gautier, MS. 11 Audubon Nature Institute Annual Report 2015 “When I see kids get excited about animals, it is a moment of deep satisfaction. If they’re excited, that means there’s a chance for animals.” Joe Forys, Audubon Zoo Curator of Large Mammals CONSERVATION 12 Animals are the heart of Audubon Audubon's Animals Nature Institute. When you encounter the wonder of a newlyhatched penguin or newborn baby colobus monkey, or vote on a name for the Aquarium’s new resident white alligator (Chompitoulas, overwhelmingly!), you know your Audubon Nature Institute's collection includes mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Mammals Fish partnership with Audubon is doing great things. Birds Reptiles Together we reminisce about how many of us grew up with the animals at the Zoo and the Aquarium. Amphibians Invertebrates Today, we all delight in watching our children and grandchildren Insects develop that same sense of joy and stewardship. The animals who call Audubon home are ambassadors to the next generation of naturalists. The gentle flutter of a butterfly and the incredible brilliance of Conservation Project Highlights • 28 Kemp’s ridley sea turtles— rehabilitation and release youngest conservationists, inspiring • Ongoing manatee monitoring in cooperation with government agencies confidence that our work together • Stranded dolphin rehabilitation has delivered the planet’s future to • Mississippi sandhill cranes— hatched and released into refuge the world’s frogs fascinate our excellent hands. • Pelican rehabilitation and release • Wetlands conservation education through Toast for the Coast, a partnership with the New Orleans Pelicans 13 Audubon Nature Institute Annual Report 2015 “The fun times, wonderful people, and the love and care we are shown is something a person with the misfortune of health problems longs for and it is so appreciated.” Mandie Miller, participant in Red Carpet Day event for teen cancer survivors at the Aquarium COMMUNITY 14 The Audubon family of donors and supporters moves our community forward. This community is made of partnerships and programs, but it also encompasses picnics in Audubon Park or festivals at Woldenberg Riverfront Park. Our community is up-close penguin encounters for youngsters with special challenges and a day just for Mom with Irma Thomas at the Zoo. Community at Audubon means relaxing concerts, challenging runs, and volunteering. It means partying with a purpose at the elegant Whitney Zoo-To-Do and family-oriented Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Tulane Pediatrics—or strolling in the evening breeze along the riverfront enjoying Scales & Ales and Toast for the Coast. Community includes volunteer experiences for youngsters that could easily lead to an entire lifetime of service volunteering at Audubon or elsewhere in the community. These events and initiatives weave the fabric of our unique family, speaking to the essence of who we are, and how we will shape our future. It’s all thanks to you. 15 Audubon Nature Institute Annual Report 2015 The Aquarium Turns 25 “Happy 25th birthday Audubon Aquarium of the Americas! And that can only happen by taking a small child to the Zoo and letting them be fascinated by the flamingos.” George Trumbull, Trumbull Family Foundation OUR FUTURE 18 Thanks to your partnership, there will be a lot of activity at Audubon attractions and facilities continuing through the coming years. Together, we’ll set the stage for decades of growth and progress for our families, our visitors, our cherished wildlife and the incomparable natural wonders that make our home so special. Audubon is the source of powerful memories for many people, and I’m grateful when they are shared with me.” Maria Kohls, Intern and Volunteer Supervisor This Annual Report listing is composed of donors who supported Audubon Nature Institute in 2015. With such a list, an occasional oversight might occur. If your name has been omitted or there is an error in the listing, we apologize and ask that you notify us at (504) 861-5107. 31 Audubon Nature Institute Annual Report 2015 Audubon Nature Institute is grateful to all donors, members and visitors who support our vision of creating an outstanding family of museums and parks dedicated to nature. Audubon receives virtually no city, state or federal funding for operations, relying instead on front gate admission, concessions and gift shop sales, facility rentals and the generous gifts from friends who help provide world-class adventures to more than 2 million visitors each year.
