PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The ride back home from the AMR fall
tour's destination in Estes Park in the back
seat of Don and Judy's Audi was as unexpected as the 89 car arriving on the back of
a flatbed truck on the street outside of my
house later that Sunday afternoon. But a
broken rocker arm and missing shaft
caused the ensuing oil leak
(a gusher) that finished our
driving experience just as
we pulled (slid) into the
evening's hotel parking lot.
We decided to face the
engine in the morning after
enjoying the evening dinner
party and watching the
awards to the winners. Yes,
once again, Peggy and I had
lost another rally, this time
to a highly prepared Ford F150 truck, expertly driven
and navigated by RMR
members Dale and Carole.
Next year, we will be back
on the road looking for that
elusive victory. Although
we are not going all out and bringing a
truck, we will be sure that our towing
insurance is paid up.
Thinking back, many of the rallies and
tours we've been on had 1or 2 Porsches
that dropped out along the road with some
sort of mechanical problem. Fortunately,
most of the rallies have a Porsche mechanic along, and this year Bill was crawling
under my car in the frosty morning air to
identify the problem and recommend the
tow home. In a nearby parking space, a
group gathered to ponder over a 928 from
New Mexico that refused to start due to an
aftermarket anti-theft system problem. It's
owner also met the tow truck driver, Bob,
who surprisingly remembers his first
Porsche tow from Estes Park in 1973, and
still carefully ties the wheels down to avoid
another stern lecture from the Porsche
dealer.
On the road or at the track Porsche club
members are always there with a spare
part, some diagnostic advice or a lift back
Dave Speights reports he is close to filling
the list of event co-chairs, and Susan
Bucknam is lining up committee chairs for
2007. The schedule is being filled with the
traditional events, and several members are
organizing new of events and socials for
next year highlighting driving our
Porsches. If you have an idea
and the energy to plan an event,
it is not too late to let Dave
know your idea. In fact, we
hope to have several unscheduled "pick-up" events next year
as members gather to make the
most of a summer day, or to participate in a charity effort.
So, whether it is putting my car
on the flatbed, or putting on the
year's events, I want to express
thanks to everyone for participating in 2006. As I look ahead
to 2007, I offer a big thank you
to those carrying the club forward.
home. Helping each other out is a part of
the club that makes it fun to be on an
event, even when something goes wrong.
And, to insure that next year goes well, we
are organizing the 2007 season and finding
the people to bring a wide range of activities and events to us again.
We have had a great response from the
membership in volunteering to lead RMR
next year. Martin Smith jumped in as the
nominee for the Board position of
Newsletter Editor. Martin and his family
regularly attend events with the silver 55
car, and he recently co-chaired the La Junta
DE. Martin will be a welcome new addition to the Board.
You too, can join in saying
thanks for 2006 and welcoming 2007 by
attending the Holiday Party December 9th.
We will be recognizing volunteers and presenting the coveted RMR awards including
Most Distinguished Driver, Most Improved
Driver (Women and Men), Porsche Patron,
Rolling Donut, Enthusiast of the Year, and
Challenge Series. The new Board will be
installed. Food, drink, conversation and
entertainment are all included as we meet
in downtown Denver at the Theater Cafe.
I'll be there, and afterwards, if my Porsche
doesn't start in the DCPA garage, I'll know
just where to find some help.

T HE E DITOR ’ S M USINGS
The driving season is almost over. The last
autocross will be history by the time you
read this. We should have the final
Challenge Series results for the next
newsletter.
In December there is the Holiday Party.
Registration is open. Go to
www.motorsportsreg.com to make you
reservation. See the article on page 16 for
details.
Don’t despair; there will be plenty to keep
us busy during the winter months. There is
the membership meeting on November 2,
at the Radisson Hotel. This is the meeting
where next year’s RMR board is elected.
At least there aren’t a bunch of campaign
ads cluttering this issue. Be sure to attend
so you can express you views. There were
two last minute candidates. Their bios are
on page 14.
January gets busy. There is the annual
membership meeting at 3-R. This is an
excellent opportunity to see lots of fast
cars in various stages of construction.
Then later in the month is Eiskhana. If
you think an autocross is tough, come up
and try driving on the ice. Where else can
you spin your car at 10 mph not worry
about going into a ditch? This is great
practice for winter driving. Speaking of
upcoming events, we are still looking for
volunteers to help out. If you would like
to learn how the club really works, contact
Dave Speights at
[email protected] or (970) 2252201. No experience required. He will be
glad to hear from you.
Elsewhere in this issue there are articles
and stories about past events and experiences of our members with Porsches in
non RMR events. Take a look.
See you at the Holiday Party.

This is not a racing school. As the name
implies, it is a driving school. But the
beauty of the PDE is that everyone, from
beginning novice to local driving instructor, can benefit. The class is limited to 24
from the Mesozoic Era, an Indian shooting
an arrow into the sky, and brilliant green
grass slopes that serve as bleachers during
feature race events. Add to that, one of the
worlds best Vintage Motorsports
Museums. But enough of that.
Aesthetics aside – there is the 16-turn, 2.38
mile, 45’ wide, 80-feet of elevation change
twisting ribbon of asphalt and concrete that
comprises the heart of Barber. Tight in
spots in wheel-to-wheel, but for the PDE,
it’s nothing short of heaven.

drivers. They are split into groups of 4.
After an initial classroom session, each
group takes a turn at a different skills
course.
Among them: on-track driving sessions with both a 997
Carrera and Carrera S, a skid
pad using the standard
Carerra (which dramatically
demonstrates the magic and
ass-saving qualities of PSM),
heel-toe exercises in a
Cayman, an autocross in a
Boxster, and an off-road
excursion in the Cayenne
S.
One of the highlights is a timed
team autocross on
the 2nd day.
The place: Barber
Motorsports Park: a
70-million dollar
facility that sits nestled on a 740 care
tract of pines just
outside Birmingham.
Dotting the landscape are bronze

Track sessions are fairly long. Just enough
to leave you wanting more. Students must
follow the group’s lead instructor – each in
their own car - and speeds are determined
by the instructor. If you’re a track novice,
it’s well within your comfort zone. If
you’re chomping at the bit to push a bit
harder – you must be patient. Top speeds
barely top 90, but getting to know the track
at slower speeds is valuable.
After baiting you for a couple of track sessions in a standard Carrera, students get to
do a session in the Carrera S. The difference between the 3.6 liter, 325 hp engine
in the standard 911 and the 3.8 liter, 355
hp “S” is noticeable. Although we never
got the cars close to speed, the S’s were
impressive, from handling and braking to
acceleration.
At the end of the 2nd day, instructors took
students for track rides in the S’s and in
Turbo Cayennes. Suffice it to say: It is a
humbling experience to ride with someone

who does it as a living.
I have focused more on the track sessions,
mainly because that’s where the skills
courses are applied. The grin factor is also
a bit higher.
The Porsche Driving Experience is fun.
Unfortunately, fun does not come cheap.
The 1-day course is $1,795 per person.
2-day course, a 4-course dinner at a golf
resort is held on the first evening.
The PDE does offer discount rates at the
Ross Bridge Resort (where they hold the
dinner), but it is about 30-40 minutes from
the track by shuttle and is still relatively
expensive.
We stayed at an inexpensive hotel in Pell
City, which was about 15 minutes
away from Barber.
At the end of the 2-day course, I
was hot, sweaty and tired. Much
like the end of a 2-day DE or
Club Race. And much like the
DE, I couldn’t wait until the next
time.
In this case, the next time is what
the PDE calls “The Master’s
Course”. No follow-the-leader,
it’s all-out solo track time – and
available to those who have done
the first session. Don’t bother me
next spring – I’ll be in

LA JUNTA DRIVERS’ ED
By Grant Remington
For one single event, it seemed almost like
two totally different worlds, the two days
at La Junta. Saturday dawned beautiful
and sunny, with a nice breeze, and the
expectant faces of 55 drivers and their
Porsches. Things started off well, with a
rousing drivers’ meeting, and Kent's waving green flag. We finished up with Beer30 at dusk, a half page spin log, and the
prospect of a fun evening to come. The
dinner was provided at the Hogs Breath,
accompanied by a double showing of
C'était un Rendezvous, a film by French
director Claude Lelouch. Sunday opened
overcast, with the Saturday's same breeze,
but decidedly chilly. We were optimistic
and set up timing anyway, but during our
first cars out in the Black group, the rain
began. The Green group following had a
notable number of spins, leading myself
and David Rossiter, the Safety Chair, to
take a quick run of the track to see just
how bad it was. We decided it was slippery, but not dangerous, and out went the
Orange group. On a personal note, thank
you Cecil for one of the most enjoyable
sessions I have driven this year. It was a
pleasure to drive with you, and as always, I
am incredibly impressed with your always
improving driving skills. Lastly came the
Blue run group, and finishing in a spectacular display of rooster-tail water sprays
from the rear wheels, we decided to call
the event before someone or something
pushed a little bit too hard.
Thank you to all the participants for this
weekend, that made it such an enjoyable
event, and all the volunteers, without
which it would have not been possible. A
special thanks also to Martin Smith, my
co-chair and an absolutely wonderful person to work with.

nominations that were too late for the
October newsletter. They are included in

Martin Smith
Over the years, my dad and I enjoyed
attending occasional car races including the
Mile High Nationals, and some vintage
sports car races at Steamboat and Second
Creek. We eventually went to a PCA DE
event as guests of Mr. Jim Fry in summer
of 2004. It was at that time a light went
off in my head: "I could actually DO this!"
OF
D IRECTORS N OMINEES
the day, my brakes started to fade and I was
forced to come off the track early on the
last run. Dave Speights heard of my plight
and volunteered to come to the track early
on Sunday to help me bleed my brakes so I
could continue to drive safely. Thus, after
my first DE, I was already indebted to several PCA people who went out of their way
to ensure I had a fun weekend.
Two years later, I was again inspired at this
year's club race in Pueblo. I watched a
team of about 10 people put an engine in a
fellow racer's car. I believe it took just 1
hour and 38 minutes to go from "no
engine" to driving the car around the paddock. I was amazed at the teamwork and
camaraderie shown by PCA folks when a
club member is in need.
done every DE possible. It was the most
fun I'd had in years. I even won Rookie of
the Race! I've been doing DE's and Club
Racing ever since. You may have seen my
red '77 911 3.0 Carrera, #441, which I use
for both DE's and Club racing. It's been an
incredibly reliable track car for the last
eight years! I also have an '02 C4S which I
picked up in Germany and drive almost
every day. Today it has 98,336 miles on it!
I've been very active, otherwise, in the
club, participating in the challenge series
events, chairing events, serving on
Challenge Series committee, and for the last
six years, I've been the program chairman,
responsible setting up programs for the club
membership meetings. I've also been helping Walt Fricke with some of the engineering issues on the new race track.
As the newsletter editor, I will have new a
way to contribute to the RMR club. I look
forward to the continuation of what I think
has been a great newsletter. Rex has set the
bar pretty high, but I know with the support
of all the great RMR club members, I can
successfully produce a newsletter that you
will enjoy reading each month.
Secretary
Rick Goncalves
So I bought a 79 SC in October 2004 and
rushed down I-25 to attend an event called
"Last Crack at the Creek". It was at that
event that I learned how great RMR club
members are. When it came time for me to
drive for the first time, my car wouldn't
start! I was devastated. Not only was I
not going to be able to drive on the track,
but I wasn't sure how I was going to get
home! My instructor, Walt Fricke, who I
had known for all of 30 minutes, let me
drive his (OK, Kathy's) 911SC race car on
the track for the first run session. As if that
wasn't enough, Walt then proceeded to
spend several hours troubleshooting and
eventually fixing my car so that I could
drive it for the next 2 sessions. The driving experience was great, but by the end of
I've been loving Porsches for over 35 years.
I remember sitting with Randy Hoch discussing Porsches in Willard Hall at the
University of Colorado back in '68, while
everyone else was discussing 442's and
Boss Mustangs. I, meanwhile, was driving
a '61 VW bug, wishing it was a Porsche.
Since '73 I have, at least, been driving

PCA Miller Motorsports
Photos & Story By Bob Polich
With great anticipation a large number of
Colorado club racers headed west to the
inaugural PCA Club Race at Miller
Motorsports outside of Salt Lake City,
Utah. The track has already hosted several
high profile pro events and the full 4.5 mile
layout was to be used for the PCA event.
Could the track live up to the hype? The
quick answer is yes as any track with bathrooms in all directions, regular trash pickup, an asphalt paddock the size of most
mall parking lots, a museum, clubhouse,
and a meeting room with a wall of windows that overlooks the full track is a little
more than our normal club race experience.
The track has 23 corners, is wider than
most tracks, has a smooth surface, and
there is a substantial amount of runoff
room.
Marni Banazek – Dart - napping
Two sprint races and an Enduro were run
for the over 100 cars in attendance. It was
unusual that almost every PCA car class
was represented, but none of the classes

make the race) is the social aspect and
families of club racers. Many of us treat
the races as a great gathering of friends
Joy Petty, Deb Polich, Geri Brannigan, Marni Banazek and I have no idea
had more than 10 cars. The Saturday
Enduro registration was capped at 99 cars.
Attrition from the practices and Fun Race
reduced the cars taking the green flag to
under 80, but this was still the record number of cars on the track at one time for the
Miller facility. The start was a sight to
behold for those watching from the balconies overlooking the track. Once the
race was underway the long track seemed
to handle the large group with ease
although the speed difference from the
fastest to slowest classes was quite dramatic. There were two groups for the Sunday
sprint races, with each group having a
morning and afternoon race. The Colorado
racers fared well in all of the races held
with numerous class podium finishes.
However, the focus of this guest write up
(our Liaison Mike Quigley, was preparing
where there happens to be a few races.
Over the last few years many of us have
traveled coast to coast with our fellow racers, family, and friends. Some in the
Colorado group are racing spouses, with
Kim and Paul Gutowski each driving at
events, Gennie and Mike Hemmingway
alternating driving at events as do Vicki
Earnshaw and Pat Moyle, and Deborah
Polich driving if her husband ever figures
out how to share the car and keep it working on her weekends. John Cooley and
Alexandra Sabados began a father /
daughter racing connection at the recent
Pueblo race.
It is the support of the spouses, family and
friends that make the club racing experience so enjoyable for the racers. Jesse

schedule allows and when it does not, she
makes sure to FedEx in the cookies and

anticipate for each event. When his young
daughter Devyn's busy schedule allows,
she brings mom Laura to the events. No
wonder it is so easy for Jess to go fast!
Kathleen Lamb has been traveling with
Bill Lamb to all of the races and they still
act like newlyweds. In Utah, Bill met his
new father in law Phil for the first time.
After the brief introduction, he put on his

Team Stribling needed a paddock of their
own with dad Richard doing the DE portion viewed by what seemed to be scores
of relatives and friends. Dave Speights is
accompanied by his dad Bob doing the
DE's at many events. Pets are part of the
family with a determination of the track
and event hotel pet policies are almost
more important than the schedule of
events. Mike Martin's parents attended
the Pueblo event and his mother was a
great help in addressing the questions we
needed to know about Mike including
what his birth weight was and what his
weight was graduating from high school.
Kathy Fricke was unable to
accompany Walt to Utah, but contacted his trailer mate Bobby
Dahlstrom to insure Walt was eating properly and taking care of
himself. Dale Tuety was in Utah
with Mary Lee who accompanies
him to all of the races.
