Dear Friends,
Living in New York City is energizing and invigorating: the constant hum of people gathering for work,
for events, for cultural stimulation charges those of us who have chosen to live here. To walk the streets
amid folk speaking dozens of languages, pursuing all manner of lifestyles and labor, is to be enveloped
in the array of human possibilities. Nothing seems static here: buildings rise only to be renovated and
reconstructed, neighborhoods change as economic forces and opportunities bring new businesses and new
residents, and one result is an exciting sense of things moving ever forward.
Another result, however, can be an discouraging sense of transience, of a world that is fast moving beyond
us, slipping through our grasp. The hubbub of the news cycle, the loss of friends to relocation or changing
life circumstances or death, the upending of familiar places as new developments take them over – such
constant change can leave us feeling disconnected, alienated, and alone. Our collect today reminds us
that while we do live in a world of things “passing away,” we can find connection and stability and hope
by focusing on what we believe has endured and always will endure: the love of God in the person of the
risen Jesus Christ.

Website Launch Party

Last spring, St. James’ embarked on the exciting project of
redesigning our website in the hopes of creating an easily-navigated,
comprehensive, and engaging tool for newcomers and members alike.
We’ll finally celebrate the fruits of our labors with the launch of our
“new” www.stjames.org! Communications Committee members will
be available at Coffee Hour to answer questions and run-through
some new features that we believe will help our community of faith
grow together in knowing and sharing the love of Christ.

The Rev. Craig Townsend will examine the opening of Matthew’s

Music Notes
The Boys’ & Girls’ Choir sings the rousing poem by George Herbert
‘Praise,’ set to music by George Dyson. At 11:15 a.m., the choirs
sing the haunting William Blake poem “Little Lamb,” set to music
by the Orthodox composer John Tavener.

informal conversation with the Rector on one of three topics: Why Now?, Why Here?, Why Us? No advance planning is necessary; simply meet next to the bell at the back corner of the church.
Essential Christianity
Sundays, Oct. 14 - Nov. 18 . 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
A six-week course led by St. James’ clergy intended to equip the faithful, the curious, and the skeptical with helpful
information, vocabulary, and concepts for exploring Christian faith. Parishioners, newcomers, and inquirers are
welcome, especially those considering baptism, confirmation, or reception. Visit our online calendar to register or

The Way
Beginning in January...
An eight-week small-group exploration of the Baptismal Covenant and a rich opportunity to get to know your fellow travelers at St. James’, including committed lay leaders of diverse backgrounds and perspectives. How are you

Holy Eucharist Rite I
Wed. 8:00 - 8:35 a.m.
A 30-minute Eucharist in traditional language with a short sermon,
followed by optional Bible Study.
We Love to Sing & Drama on Thursdays
Thu. 4:00 p.m.
Children ages 4-6 get an introduction to role play and improvisation
that leads to acting out basic Bible stories. Kids 0-4 share the joy of

Readings for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost:
Numbers 11:4-6,10-16,24-29, Psalm 19:7-14, James 5:13-20, 7-8,
Mark 9:38-50
Music: When Jesus says, “For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a
cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ
will by no means lose the reward,” we see parallels between
the Old and New Testaments. So it is with Psalm 145, sung
to Jean Berger’s setting, “The eyes of all wait upon thee, and
thou givest them their meat in due season.”
Children’s Eucharist
9:10 a.m.
We welcome our youngest parishioners with an age-appropriate sermon, music by the Children’s Choirs, and Communion. Normally
the first Sunday of the month, it has been rescheduled due to Columbus Day. Bring friends and family.
Adult Education Forum
10:30 a.m.
Dr. Deirdre Goode, Professor of New Testament at the General
Theological Seminary will provide an overview of the Gospel of Matthew with a focus on Sermon on the Mount.
Morning Prayer & Communion
11:15 a.m.
Morning Prayer provides for some of the finest prayers and music
in the Anglican tradition; Communion is the sacrament Christians
have gathered to celebrate on Sundays since the earliest days of the
Church. Why choose? An abbreviated version of Morning Prayer will
continue at 11:15 on the last Sunday of every month, but now we
will also have Communion together every Sunday.
Malawi Mission Presentation
12:30 p.m.
Patrick Kidd and Madeline Schroth, co-chairs of our Partners in
Mission - Africa Committee share their summer visit to the Anglican
Diocese of Southern Malawi, an update on past projects, and a
discussion of new directions for our partnership.
Evening Prayer & Candlelight Communion
6:00 p.m.
We are also introducing a contemporary setting of the traditional
service of Evening Prayer (also known as Evensong) into our 6:00
p.m. service on the last Sunday of every month. Most months it will
be sung by the congregation, but occasionally our choirs will join us.
