“ Living in God’s Kingdom”
Attending Gospel Road were Stephanie Durbin, Felicity Crawford, Danny Warner (and Mary Lauter not pictured), and adult
chaperone Patty Warner.
Gospel Road is an annual event sponsored by the diocese in
which Catholic teens in grades 9-12 participate in a five-day,
mission-focused community service camp. This year’s Gospel
Road was held July 13-17 in London, Ohio, and had about 200
participants from around the diocese. Home base was St. Patrick Elementary School in London.
Gospel Road began on a Sunday evening, with Fr. Josh
Wagner, a Gospel Road alumnus, speaking to the group. He set
the tone for the week, explaining that at Mass we receive the
Eucharist and then are sent forth to proclaim the Gospel by how
we live our lives. We are Christians by how we love one another. We are all made in the image and likeness of God, and we
should see Jesus in the faces of those in need. In our service to
them, we are serving Him.
The kids were divided into work groups with a chaperone as
the group leader. Each day began with everyone gathering in
the school cafeteria for a big breakfast, then work groups were
assigned to a location each day in which they would perform the
task at hand; for example, painting an old dance studio that was
being converted to a thrift store, clearing overgrown landscaping for a disabled homeowner, or helping with deliveries for the
Meals-on-Wheels program. The work sites were locations in
and around London and nearby cities. After a hard day’s work,
the groups returned by late afternoon for a hearty dinner and an
evening activity.
One evening, the group went to Sports Ohio and enjoyed
putt-putt golf, go-cart racing, and batting cages. The following
evening the group went to Choctaw Lake in Plain City for
swimming and a cook-out.
“...where God is king on earth and in eternal life,
Mary is queen, and Jesus is the Prince of Peace.”
The students worked on crafts
that reinforced concepts of what
it means to be a part of God’s
kingdom.
The kids played hopscotch and other games
to burn off some energy!
Katie Ketcham
taught the
students some
of their favorite praise and
worship songs.
At the end of the week, the evening activity was a penance
service at St. Patrick Church in London, and on the final day of
Gospel Road after the conclusion of the work day, the group
attended Mass together.
The people who were helped by Gospel Road were very appreciative and the kids learned that mission work is not only
something that is done in foreign countries. People in need can
be found right in our own communities.

what they learned.
Sally Carlson, Marilyn

Holy Days are important days on the Church’s liturgical calendar in which we
honor the mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints, and the
Church obligates us, as the Body of Christ, to participate in the celebration of the Mass.
The Church has defined ten Holy Days; however, with the prior approval of the
Apostolic See, the conference of bishops can suppress some of the holy days of
obligation or transfer them to a Sunday.
Thus different countries celebrate different holy days of obligation (apart from
Sunday, which they all celebrate). In the United States, the Holy Days are:




Mary, Mother of God - January 1
Ascension - Thursday of the sixth week of Easter (in most areas of the U.S,
this is transferred to the following Sunday)
