Welcome to ADIFF 2014!
Welcome to the world of the African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF). In
our reality, people of diverse origins, nationalities, orientations and backgrounds come
together to celebrate the world of images and ideas that depict the human experience of
people of color all over the world.
The international Black communities—whether in Europe, Latin America or Africa – continue to play a disproportionately marginal role in the art of cinema. Further, many creative
and visionary films lay languid, collecting dust without the light of a screening due to the
lack of distribution structures or movie theaters in the hands of more sensitive programmers. Stereotypical images, myths and persistent bad taste characterize many of the films
that pass for “good movies” in the name of a “numbers” game that determines whose
world will get to be shown and whose won’t.
By placing the spotlight on innovative films that otherwise would be ignored, ADIFF has
created a privileged platform for many of these films. The list of titles that have found a
distribution deal thanks to their participation in the festival is long and still growing.
We thank filmmakers, ADIFF’s old and new family of cinephiles, the theaters, ADIFF’s
former and current staff and all those who, against all odds, have helped us for the last
twenty two years in our mission to enhance the cultural DNA of New York City and beyond.
We thank you all and wish you a wonderful ADIFF 2014!

SOUTH AFRICA: 20 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY program
Keynote speaker
Dr. Molefi Kete Asante
Founder and President of the Molefi Kete Asante Institute
Founded on the basis of the Afrocentric philosophy articulated in the
more than seventy five books of Molefi Kete Asante, the Institute is
devoted to studying, researching, and investigating all issues from
the standpoint of African people as agents and subjects of human experience, not as on
the margins of any other culture. The experts ask the question, “How do African people
see this event, experience, or condition with their own eyes?” Such a perspective provides remarkably new interpretations of human phenomena in the African world. Thus,
the scholars who serve as experts in the Institute are highly educated, well-trained researchers and published authors who attempt in a non-partisan manner to provide their
best insight into topics and themes covered by the Institute.

BOUND: AFRICANS VS. AFRICAN AMERICANS

of the African Americans I
was encountering cared
about
Africa and its “booty
scratchers”.
I approached an African
American student whom I

was swiftly told, “I am not
African, you people
sold us.” I was shocked.’
-Peres Owino

addresses the little known tension that exists between Africans and
African Americans. The documentary uses personal testimonials to
expose this rift, then goes the historical experiences of Africans and
African Americans. By exploring these experience, Peres illuminates
the moments that divide and those that bind Africans and African
American. Directed by Peres Owino, 2014, 90 min., USA,

SOUTH AFRICA: 20 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY
It’s been 20 years since the first universal elections took place in South Africa
resulting in the election of Nelson Mandela. To celebrate 20 years of democracy,
ADIFF - in collaboration with the South African Department of Arts and Culture,
the NFVF and the Kwazulu-Natal Film Commissionis - is pleased to present 14
films that look at the past, present and future of South Africa.
Three of the films in the program illustrate life in South Africa during apartheid
and introduce us to little known individuals who contributed to the struggle for
the end of that regime: Come Back Africa secretly filmed in 1959 and featuring
Miriam Makeba, Letters to Zhora about the untold story of Ahmed Kathrada,
a freedom fighter who spent 26 years in prison in Robben Island with Nelson
Mandela and The Vula Connection a thrilling documentary about Tim Jenkin,
an unlikely revolutionary who decided, unusually for a white South African, to
fight against his own government in the 1970’s.
Otelo Burning offers a raw and emotionally precise account of the political
violence that occurred during the transition to democracy. Nothing But the
Truth, Last Doorman Standing and I, Afrikaner are works highlighting the
need to examine and understand the changes that took place in post-apartheid
South Africa and how peoples’ lives changed - or did not change - as a result.
The Wooden Camera, The Two of Us, The Manicurist and Life in Progress
depict stories of young people and the ups and downs of their lives in the new
South Africa.
The comedy Material about an Indian Muslim comedian and his rigid father and
the up-market Game Lodge set dramedy Between Friends are two entertaining
films that have been very successful in South Africa and are very good
examples of the evolution of the film industry in that country today.
Finally, as South Africa celebrates 20 years of democracy, The State is a
science fiction short that looks 20 years ahead to a terrifying future.
While this selection of film is by no means a definitive selection of South African
cinema - as South Africa is one of the most prolific African nations in terms of
cinematic production – we trust that it will provide an opportunity for discovery
and dialog with the many guest filmmakers in attendance for the screenings.
