TOUCHMARK AT ALL SAINTS December 2012 | page 4 (cont.) BRAIN BUILDERS Try this brain activity with friends and family during the holidays. Sit in a circle. Ask each participant to think of one accomplishment (e.g., helping a grandchild learn to read, raising their kids, serving in the military, etc.). Pick a person to start. This individual will state his/her name and accomplishment. Working clockwise, the next person will repeat the first person’s name and accomplishment and then state his/her own name and achievement. The third person must then repeat the information from the first two before adding his/her own. Continue in this fashion around the circle. During a recent birthday night, everyone enjoyed the fun classic—pizza! Executive Director Angie Rabon serves pizza to Dots Klinger. You can try the game again with a new topic, like naming your favorite food or movie. Start with a different person and change direction. Growing. Learning. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million people in the United States have Alzheimer’s disease. As part of National Alzheimer’s Month, team members took advantage of educational opportunities to expand their knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementia. Five different professionals in specific fields related to dementia taught the classes. The following people completed Dementia Care Specialists Level 2: Angela DeVries, Dawn Mulloy, Carla Johnson, Miranda Bakley, Wayne Harwood, and Theresa Baldwin. These team members completed Dementia Care Specialists Level 3: Patricia Alsgaard; Tisha Ganske, Karla Capell, Jesse VanderWeide, Dawn Mulloy, Angela DeVries, and Robin Stevens. During the recent Thanksgiving celebration, the Touchmark Food Services team baked 18 turkeys (25 pounds each) for the Thanksgiving Buffet … totaling 450 pound of turkey! Marge Coalman, EdD Vice President of Wellness & Programs Celebrations redefined “Pay attention to what has heart and meaning.” – Angeles Arrien, PhD, cultural anthropologist and author Celebrations tend to be memorable—and personal— events. A baby’s christening, a 60th wedding anniversary, a high school graduation for a young person with significant disabilities … these are all landmark celebrations—onetime markers in the lives of the celebrants and those invited to share the moment. There’s also an enhanced opportunity to celebrate the spirit of our lives through community outreach events and interactions with a wider audience of recipients and their families and friends. This has been a year of several devastating events. Most recently, Hurricane Sandy claimed dozens of lives in Canada and the U.S., and thousands are still feeling the storm’s effects. What can anyone do to mitigate the pain, suffering, and losses of so many? There are many ways to reach out to neighbors, friends, and even strangers, and these efforts do make a difference. Globally, prayers, donations, and gifts of time and skills to charities of choice benefit everyone, including the giver. The essence of all these efforts is to move beyond one’s self and care for and support others. In the model of whole-person wellness, it has been widely demonstrated that individuals who give back and expand their network of support to others benefit in ways that are hard to tie back to one specific marker, e.g., lower blood pressure, better heart health, TOUCHMARK AT ALL SAINTS 111 W 17th Street • Sioux Falls, SD 57104 605-335-1117 • Touchmark.com © 2011 Touchmark Living Centers, Inc., all rights reserved reduced risk of depression, etc. However, the overall impact of selflessness and giving back— the power of generosity—leads to enhanced quality of life, connectedness, mutual respect, and gratitude. In studies done by Harvard (Mother Theresa effect) and Duke University (Helper’s High), and the study on 2,700 Tecumseh, Michigan, volunteers, death rates were two-and-a-half times lower than for those who didn’t volunteer, and this was after all other variables screened What better way to celebrate the holiday season than by giving time, talents, skills, and resources to the Touchmark Full Life volunteer programs. For information, contact a member of the Life Enrichment/Wellness team. Thank you in advance for sharing and caring. And during this season—and throughout 2013, be grateful for all that we have, and cherish each day.
