Remember Zacchaeus the rich tax collector in the gospel of Luke? Remember how excited he was to catch a glimpse of Jesus as he passed through his town. Jesus stops and summons Zacchaeus down from the tree he was in to have dinner at his home. During dinner, Zacchaeus proclaims to the Lord and his guest that he will no longer extort money from the people or if he does overcharge them he will give them back four times as much. Does Zacchaeus continue his conversion of following Christ and his teachings after he leaves for another town? I'd like to first offer each and every one of you a HAPPY, yet belated, THANKSGIVING. Thanks so much to all of you ladies and gentlemen who joined us for our Memorial Mass on Monday, November 25. A special thanks goes out to Fr. Clint for celebrating Mass with us. I'm happy to say that "The Knight's Chalice: Beer Festival and Homebrew Competition" has been given the date of Saturday, April 26, 2014. While this will be the inaugural year, with good planning, promotion and execution, this event will hopefully become a staple annual event for 2917, allowing us to continue to increase our donations to Catholic education and the other charities we support. Other highlights of the festival will include live music, best-dressed Bavarian costume contest, and best sauerkraut and sausage competition. The event is still in the planning stages, so if you have ANY SUGGESTIONS, please, please, please let me know. We want this to be as successful as possible and we can only do this with your support. We are especially seeking suggestions from some of the ladies out there. That is the question we have to ask ourselves each day. Am I continuing the work of Christ now that the pressures of this life are collapsing in on me? Will I go above and beyond that which I am expected to do as a follower of Christ to help others? How hard do I work to forgive myself as well as others in the same way Christ has forgiven each of us? What has to happen for our hearts and spirits to continue to grow in the light of Christ? Work hard each day to remain in the light of Christ. Never take a day off from the conversion that Christ has started in your life. Continue to work hard and pray harder long after the feel good moment of your conversion has left. If you’re looking for a good place to celebrate the New Year, come join us at Council 2917 on December 31. Mark Halata and Texavia will be providing some good music so be sure to make your reservations. I want to wish everyone a very Merry and Blessed Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year! Brett Owens, Knight of the month for October. Doug & Pat Wendt, Family of the month for October. NorthSide Columbus Club John Buck, President As it stands now, the NSCC is just completing all of their major work projects. We do however, still need volunteers for the regular monthly maintenance—yard maintenance and building cleaning and maintenance. The NSCC is looking for part-time employees to clean and set up the hall before and after rentals. The duties of this job are cleaning the tables and chairs, sweeping and mopping the floor, setting up and taking down tables and chairs for the different occasions, cleaning the rest rooms and taking out the trash cans. This job does require some strength in moving the tables, but the tables are plastic so they are lightweight. The hours required for this job are after Bingo on Friday nights for 2 to 3 hours and on Sunday after party rentals for 3 to 4 hours. If you are interested in this job, call Mickie Wendt at the Hall for more details on times and pay. Our November workers were: John Buck, Jimmy Dziedzic, Billy Hoffart, James Urbanovsky, Ben Kaminski—about half of our usual 3rd Saturday work day. Our regular week day workers were: James Urbanovksy, Joe Pavlik and John Buck. We did get a new week day worker—he is newly retired and ready to volunteer more of his time at the hall for maintenance— his name is Bennie Bronikowski. We need to give Brother Bennie a thank you for going from working for a living to volunteering some of his retirement time to us. Bennie is now assisting James Urbanovsky in cleaning and cutting the ditch on Whitney St. With this one man assisting James, James has been able to cut the time that it takes to clean the ditches in half. The more help that we receive on our volunteer maintenance, the faster the work will get done and less of a burden on a certain few men. DOMINO RESULTS Moon Tournament Winners for Nov. 4 1st place: 2nd place: Ron Wendt Angie Heinrich and George Mendel Next Moon Tournament is December 2 The Supreme Council supported a youth movement by encouraging councils to sponsor a Columbian Squire Circle composed of boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who were really Junior Knights of Columbus. A Charter was granted in April, 1964 to Bishop Claude M. Dubuis Circle 1732 in memory of the second Bishop of the State of Texas. Prior to the Squires, our council sponsored Boy Scout Troop 917 which is no longer active. A Scout House was built for the troop, but since we no longer have a troop, the building was renamed the “Youth Building.” It has recently been renamed Eaton Hall, after our council’s first Grand Knight. Several Squires have joined our council after becoming 18 years of age. Brother Criss Cole, a Texas Legislator and judge, was the ranking member of our state legislature and since the Governor and Lieutenant Governor were both out of the state on January 10, 1970, Brother Cole was sworn in as governor for a day. A large delegation from our council journeyed to Austin with their wives for the swearing in ceremonies. We can say that we had a Governor of Texas in our council, even if it was for only a day. Brother Cole had also been a state advocate. As time marched on and many of our members had reached retirement, a movement was started to organize a senior members group. Some of our older members couldn’t drive at night and as a result, had lost contact with the council and most of our activities. The Senior Members Club of Bishop Odin Council 2917, composed of retired members and their wives, held its first meeting on November 10, 1964. Brother Ed Walton was the president. A luncheon is held at 12:30 p.m. on the Tuesday after the first council meeting of the month. A short business meeting is held after lunch. The club had sponsored a bus trip for its members every year, including one to the Grand Ole Opry. Deadline for the January newsletter is Dec. 16. The John Halick Memorial Athletic Field was dedicated in June, 1973, to the memory of Brother John Halick, an outstanding member of our council and a Catholic gentleman in every sense of the word. On the day of the dedication, the widow of Brother John unveiled a memorial tablet in his memory which was erected at the backstop on the softball field. Please pray for our sick: Joseph B. Our Faithful Navigator has invited Fr. Brendon Cahill to be our guest speaker. Sir Knights are asked to dress in their tuxedos, social baldrics, and lovely ladies in their Sunday best. Please plan to attend this enjoyable and festive party. Sir Knights, you will have an opportunity to sharpen your sword handling skills on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the annual district color guard training. Just like last year, the training will be in Council 2917’s Odin Hall starting at 8:00 a.m. Please be sure to bring your complete regalia and sword. The purpose of this training is for improvement of the professional image displayed by the Color Guard at our many turnouts. The bi-annual First District of Texas meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2014 in Council 2917’s Odin hall. Further details will follow closer to the date but this would be a good time for Fourth Degree Sir Knights to reserve this day on their calendar of events. The Fourth Degree holds their district meetings once every two years. While only delegates voted by the assembly membership to serve will be eligible to vote on issues, the meeting is open to any Fourth Degree Sir Knight in good standing with a current 3rd Degree and 4th Degree travel card. If you have never attended a Fourth Degree District meeting here is your opportunity to do so in our very own council hall. With the spring Fourth Degree exemplification scheduled for Saturday May 10, 2014 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Humble, Texas we are encouraging all Council 2917 3rd Degree Brother Knights in good standing to consider participating in the highest degree of the Order. We currently have 498 on the active Council 2917 membership roster with only 43 Fourth Degree Sir Knights. This is a mere 8.6% of our total membership and the lowest percentage of the 12 councils that comprise the Msgr. Wilhelm Assembly. It is our goal to improve Council 2917’s membership in the Fourth Section at least to the District goal of 20%. You are asked to contact myself at 713-861-6347 with any informational questions and for enrollment forms. James Urbanovsky, PFN Msgr. George A. While most children are looking forward to Santa, I am looking forward to a little time off. Our Christmas Party will be on Sunday December 8th. Dinner will be served at 5:00 pm. Doors will open about 3:00 pm with Social Hour from 3 to 5:00. Dinner is being catered so we must have an accurate count. If you haven’t already RSVP’d to Kathy Bronikowski, please do so by Dec. 3rd. The Knights are asking all wives and Ladies Auxiliary members to please bring a dessert to the party. The Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting the Mini-Raffle again this year. A big thank you to Doris Henderson for being in charge of this for us. We voted at the November meeting to provide the electronic gifts for 2 families that have special needs children. While one family asked for only one tablet and would share between the 2 autistic children, we voted to get each child a tablet. We also purchased 2 laptops for one family of 5 to be able to use for school work. I am pleased to report that our Casino Bus trip was a success! While we only took one bus this time we still made $545. Everyone wanted to know when we were going again. We have scheduled 2 more trips for the beginning of next year. The first one will be January 25th. If you are interested in going, please let us know by Jan. 15. We will then be having a Mardi Gras bus on March 1st. This is the last Saturday before Lent starts. Please make reservations for this trip by Feb. 19th. We discussed options on spending the money that Kathy and her wonderful ladies make each Friday in the Bingo kitchen. Part of this money was voted to spend on the Christmas gifts above. We also voted that any child’s name that was left on the board after Thanksgiving, we would make sure they received their gifts as well. I will let you know if we did this in the January Newsletter. Please support our advertisers. If you would like to advertise in our newsletter, please contact Kathy Bronikowski at 281-356-3535 or [email protected] Here are a few other charities that we voted to give some monies to. Living Hope Wheelchair Assoc. will be given $500 to assist those who are struggling to live a productive life. This group was formed when assistance from the government was stopped a few years ago. We will give $500 to www.pray4holyspirit.org to sponsor their pro-life billboard. One of the “Take my hand Not my life” billboards is located right outside of the Planned Parenthood office on the Gulf Frwy. An additional $500 will be given to Houston Coalition for Life to help fund their Mobile Crisis Pregnancy Unit bus that sits outside of the office. The bus offers counseling and ultrasounds in hopes of stopping abortions. If you have any ideas or suggestions on charities we might consider helping, please let Kathy or myself know. We will be discussing where to give the remaining monies at the meeting on January 15th. Thank you to the following ladies who worked the Bingo kitchen in October: Dorothy Urbanovsky, Theresa Burkett, Angie Heinrich, Wanda Kainer, Earline Orkuhlik, Janie Okonski, Delores Tobola, Kathy Bronikowski. Thanks to our dessert providers: Janie Okonski, Sandra Rekieta, Judy Wendt, Allie King, Earline Okruhlik, Dorothy Urbanovsky, Gladys Tobias, Rita Sicola, Kathy Bronikowski.
