P4SC: Collaborative Design Presentation for Juniper Well Ranch
P4SC: Collaborative Design Presentation for Juniper Well Ranch Prescott College, Winter Block 2016 Systems and Context for Permaculture Design at Juniper Well Ranch By Leo and Shona http://juniperwellranch.com/v2/the-grounds/ The Biosphere • The thin, life supporting outermost section of the earth in which all biological activity (life) takes place • Influenced by the hydrosphere (water), lithosphere (rock surface, soil), and atmosphere. The cycling of nutrients and elements across these spheres provides the exchange necessary for life. http://www.stockholmresilience.org/21/research/research-programmes/planetary-boundaries.html Systemic Considerations Resilience in a rapidly changing, unpredictable climate. Regaining consciousness of environmental inputs (waste/pollution/toxicity). Reclaiming and remediating waste and toxins. • • • • • • • • • Fire Water Energy and resource use/conservation Human resources Community relationships (within and beyond JWR) Invasive species? Soil regeneration Animals On property food production We live in an age of unprecedented uncertainty. Life on earth is perilously poised at the precipice of extinction. Never before has man possessed the destructive resources to commit global suicide -Bernard Lown and Evjueni Chazov “The natural world is subject as well as object. The natural world is the maternal source of our being as earthlings and life-giving nourishment of our physical, emotional, aesthetic, moral and religious existence. The natural world is the larger sacred community to which we belong. To be alienated from this community is to become destitute in all that makes us human. To damage this community is to diminish our own existence.” -Thomas Berry, The Dream of the Earth Sustainability http://markhensonart.com/all-art-gallery-shop/new-pioneers Seven Generations • Considering how our actions today will affect future generations who will inherit the responsibility of being caretakers of the land. Acting with intention and forethought so that we are only adding to the vitality of our community, rather than harming it. • This informs design and choices about what is done at JWR Five Core Principles of Sustainability http://dreamstreamart.com Permaculture Ethics and Principles http://permacultureprinciples.com http://www.undergrowth.org/the_permaculture_flower Creating Regenerative Futures: Beyond Sustainability To meet the systemic challenges the earth is facing now, we must move beyond “sustaining” old, broken ways and into a philosophy and action of regeneration. “We must find our way back to true nature. We must set ourselves to the task of revitalizing the earth. Regreening the earth, sowing seeds in the desert- that is the path society must follow.” “I believe that a revolution can begin from this one strand of straw. Seen at a glance, this rice straw may appear light and insignificant. Hardly anyone would believe that it could start a revolution. But I have come to realize the weight and power of this straw. For me, this revolution is very real.” -Masanobu Fukuoka The Vision For Juniper Well Ranch By: Erica & Shannon “Juniper Well Ranch is a holistic healing and educational institute that is working to model a regenerative and thriving community of plants, animals, and humans that contributes to a positive world influence. By honoring and learning from the natural systems around us, we can become more strategic about caring for the land in a way that it will also care for us. This is a place where visions are aligned and community can come together in creation and actualization of dreams. We draw inspiration from Permaculture ethics and design in all that we do at Juniper Well Ranch. We invite you to come join us in celebration and co-creation at this exquisite human experience.” Our Process Results Healing Positive environmental Impact Education Community Involvement Now the design group will show how the implementations unfolded in the current model of the design.` Juniper Well Site Design WATER SLOW IT. Our strategic recommendations were based on three pivotal considerations; achievability, flexibility and return on investment. We asked the following questions when considering each goal: How achievable is it? How flexible is the goal? What is the return of investment? With this in mind, we came together and started brainstorming steps you can take in order to achieve everything that you envision for Juniper Well Ranch.
