If you aren’t in my circle of friends and you have
gotten this far into this issue of Inside Citrus, you
are probably wondering – what is this all about? It’s
about Citrus County and all the wonderful things
to do, places to eat & drink, sights to see, and its
wonderful people. For years I have seen publications similar to this
in big cities, in the back of my head I’ve always
thought – I want to do this in Citrus County. So
finally one day I decided to get off my backside and figure out what it
would take to make this a reality. A couple months of hard work, tons of
phone conversations and meetings, a dozen sleepless nights, some great
advertisers, and several interviews later –viola! We’ve got a publication!
Whether you are a tourist visiting from Europe, a Duke Energy employee
here for two weeks, a snowbird, a Soccer Mom, a college student, a small
business owner, a doctor, a lawyer, a preacher, or a teacher – there is
something for everyone inside these pages. Inside Citrus is now your goto resource for all the great things going on in Citrus County. Let me share a little bit about myself with you. I’ve lived in Citrus County since elementary school. A fun factoid for
you – I actually lived at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park where
my father, Tom Linley, was the manager. I always win the 3 truths and 1
lie game because no one ever believes that I grew up with a hippopotamus
in my backyard. After graduation at Crystal River High (Go Pirates!), I went to college
at Florida State (Go NOLES!!), and then after living in the Jacksonville
Beaches for several years I managed to make my way back to Citrus
County. Why you ask? Because I love this place. I’m a single twenty/
thirty-something-ish educated professional and I made an active decision
to live here. This is an amazing place. But back to me. I love country music, football, cherry vodka, weekends
on the water, my adorable sassy talented seven year old daughter Kendall,
popcorn with just the right amount of salt and butter, my amazing friends
and family, gardening (well I haven’t really actually had a garden but
it’s top on my To-Do list), Dancing with the Stars, giving back to the
community, and writing. I hate the Florida Gators, driving in the rain, cold
weather, blow drying my hair, and when people tell me there is “nothing
to do in Citrus County”. So you combine all my likes and dislikes coupled with living here for
over 20 something years – here’s Inside Citrus. Inside Citrus will feature stories about current events and local people. It will list things to do, places to go, restaurants, bars, shopping, golf
courses, and more. I invite you to share your ideas with me – what would
you like to see? I gladly accept comments, compliments, criticisms, and
snide remarks. You can email the comments & compliments to meredith@
insidecitrus.com. You can email the criticisms and snide remarks to
someone else. Two more quick notes in this inaugural Editor’s column. First, I must thank a few people who without their guidance, advice, and
support this would not have been possible. John Coscia, Mike Kovach,
and Chase Palmes – thank you! To my best girlies – Jeanne, Megan,
Karen, Val, and Emily, thank you for putting up with my craziness (more
so than normal) the past few months and for being my sounding board
as I bounced ideas around. To my parents – thanks for your support and
encouragement. My amazing father figured out how
to be a Webmaster in an afternoon (please check out
his work – www.insidecitrus.com).
Lastly, as referenced above I’m the proud momma
of a beautiful little girl. I’m only going to apologize
this one time for the gratuitous use of her adorable face
within the pages of this publication. I mean, seriously,
could she be any cuter? Face paint courtesy of Art by
Anne Adams. - Meredith

Lollygagger’s Sports Pub Review
Nestled in the heart of Crystal
River, next to Mr. B’s carwash lies
Lollygagger’s Sports Pub which
opened in August 2011. Warm
wood floors and old fashioned
claw footed tables surround the
high gloss bar that spans the length
of the restaurant. Customers are
surrounded by high definition flat
screen televisions from every angle. Owner Chase Palmes said, “I’ve
always wanted to open a place like
this, a place where people can enjoy
good food, drinks, and be able to
watch any sport they choose.”
That’s no understatement. Boasting
one of the finest full liquor bars in
the area, Lollygaggers has a wide
Page 4
assortment of vodkas,
scotches, tequilas, and
bourbons along with craft
beers on draft and in the
bottle. Lollygaggers can play
just about any sport that’s
shown on television, from
NCAA football to Soccer to MLB
and NFL – they have it all. And it’s
available for your viewing pleasure
on any one of the 17 flat screens
inside the restaurant. Lollygaggers offers so much
more than usual pub fare. “I will
only sell Boar’s Head brand meats
because they make for such a good
sandwich,” said Palmes. The
menu also features mouth watering
burgers - arguably some
of the best around and delicious salads. Additionally Lollygaggers
features an extensive daily
special board with items
ranging from homemade
lasagna to steamed shrimp
to Italian Grinders.
Open for lunch daily at
11:00am Lollygaggers entertains
its customers well into the late
evening hours. Happy hour begins
at 2:00pm Monday through Friday
and at 4:00pm on Saturdays &
Sundays; it ends at 7:00pm every
day. Owner Palmes along with General
Manager Michele Fayette put a
great deal of effort and detail into
creating the sports pub & grill,
including hand selecting a wait
staff that is always cheerful and
attentive. The front of the menu boasts the
saying “There’s no place like this
place anywhere near this place…so
this must be the place!”. Judging
by the constant stream of new
and regular customers seen at the
restaurant it seems that is quite the
consensus. Dreamers and Doers: The Supermom Team
Editor’s Note: Citrus County is full of amazing people. Dreamers, doers, movers, and shakers. They all love Citrus County
and have high aspirations for the future of our community. Each issue of Inside Citrus will feature a person (or persons) who
are actively “Dreaming & Doing” for the good of Citrus.
Sitting at her kitchen table on a Sunday
afternoon with a hot glue gun in hand
– laboriously working on centerpieces
for a friend’s upcoming wedding – Katie
Wright admits she has a “hard time
saying no”. After a good chuckle, “I’ve
got to work on that”, she replies. Wright with friend and fellow parent
Michelle Lambo are a dynamic duo
well known all over Citrus County for
their relentless work as members of the
Lecanto Primary School Parent Teacher
Organization (LPS PTO). Wright is a
mother to four, Kaylie, 3rd grade, twins
Keegan and Kelsey, age 4, and Kole, age
3. Lambo has three children, Ashley,
5th grade, Tyler, 4th grade, and Paige,
1st grade.
Wright, the current PTO Vice
Presiden,t and Lambo, the current PTO
Donation Coordinator, contribute over
500 volunteer hours each annually to
the non-profit organization. “Some
months we may only volunteer four
hours a week,” said Lambo, “But during
a month when we have a big event, like
the ones at The Grove Downtown, it’s
easily forty hours a week”.
Lambo was referring to the three major
fundraisers the PTO has held at The
Grove Downtown. Each event had a
theme and a celebrity bartender. These
adult only events helped raise part of
the $16,000 to $20,000 that the PTO has
raised annually. The themes included a
luau theme and a black and white bash
while the bartenders have been reality
television stars and up and coming
musicians. All of the monies the PTO raises in the
year go directly back to LPS by way of
donations and events. The PTO holds
three parent nights each year including
the upcoming holiday night. They also
produce the Fall Festival and Teacher
Appreciation Day. Last year for Teacher
Appreciation Day, under a rockstar
theme, the PTO held a luncheon,
photobooth, and had each teacher’s car
washed during the school day. They
have recently replaced the sound system
in the school and this year they are
working towards purchasing a solar
powered marquee for the school.
The LPS PTO has also started a new
program
an honorable mention award from PTO
Today last year. Both women attended
the convention in Orlando to receive the
national award. Wright admits, “Many other schools
and groups have approached us to ask
for help in getting their PTO’s [and other
non-profit organizations] as successful
as ours – but when would I have time
for that?”. In addition to their devotion to the

called “Panther Pass”. In the beginning
of the school year parents are given the
opportunity to pay a flat fee and have
their child stocked wit school supplies
all year. “It is so convenient for the
parents, it takes the hassle out of the
shopping.” said Lambo. On top of all this the PTO has
contributed towards enhancing the
library, classroom repairs, landscaping,
and the purchasing of physical education
equipment. Wright and Lambo’s hard work has
paid off in more ways than one, besides
enhancing the school where their
children attend; the LPS PTO received
LPS PTO both Wright and Lambo are
very active in the annual Shop with a
Cop fundraising efforts. “We volunteer
for Deputy (Todd) Farnham. I sold the
winning Harley raffle ticket last year.”
says Wright with a smile.
“We do this for our children and for the
other 764 students at LPS.”, says Wright.
When asked what upcoming events
the PTO had in the pipeline Wright
mentioned the upcoming Holiday Book
Fair but Lambo quickly chimed in “who
knows what insane idea we will have
next”.

The Heart of Citrus: New non-profit aids veterans
Editor’s Note: Citrus County is home to hundreds of non-profit organizations. Each issue will feature a different non-profit that is active in our
community. If you have suggestions of non-profits to feature, email your idea to [email protected]
Jamey Clovis knows the struggles of disabled
veterans, he is one. Clovis, a Marine, opened
Patriot Sporting Goods in early 2012. Located
in the plaza on the corner of Hampshire and
Lecanto Hwy (Co. Rd. 491), Patriot Sporting
Goods sells a wide array of fishing rods, reels,
bait & tackle and hand guns & long arm rifles. The store however isn’t a career path or
source of income for Clovis, it’s a way to give
back. “It’s the first of its kind in the country,”
said Clovis, “All of the profits go to the parent
company Warriors Creed which helps veterans
find jobs. I have volunteered all of my time to
start this store.”
Clovis, a five year resident of Citrus County,
had a background in fishing so coupled with his
Marine and government connections it seemed
like a natural pairing for the store. “The goal is
to be able to create jobs for disabled veterans,
but we also want to provide a service for
the community too. We have top of the line
brands at the store, people can’t get these just
anywhere.” said Clovis. The fishing side of the store carries Kissler
and Quantum rods to name a few. They offer an
extensive selection of bait and tackle. Brands
like Gary Yamamoto, Attraxx, Secret Weapon,
and Roboworms can be found in both fresh
water and salt water varieties. Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Glock, and Beretta
are a few of the brands of firearms they offer
along with accessories and ammunition. For
the long arms brands like Mossberg, Windham,
and Browning are available and popular. Skip
Austin, a Marine who occasionally volunteers at
the shop with Clovis, said “Right now the small
firearms, used mainly for home protection, are
selling well.”
Patriot Sporting Goods offers the CCW/
CWP courses which are required to obtain a
concealed weapons permit. These courses are
offered right at the store, typically every other
Friday. Clovis, via the parent company Warriors
Creed, has bigger plans than just the sporting
goods shop. A few other business ventures
are in the pipeline. He has been in process of
establishing an ammunition unloading facility
and a weapons refurbishment business. “I
have a lot of connections and relationships
with businesses and people in all aspects of the
government.” said Clovis. “I’m going to be
home-basing these other businesses here, out of
Citrus, to provide more jobs for the veterans.”
Patriot Sporting Goods is located at 760 W.
Hampshire Blvd, Citrus Springs, FL 34434. It
is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00am
– 5:00pm. 352.527.1205

What’s in a Mo?
In the past few weeks men all
around Citrus County are being
spotted with scruffy faces. For the
majority of these men – there’s a
valid reason. (The other 5% is just
laziness.) It’s called Movember –
during the month of November men
are growing out moustaches to raise
awareness for men’s health issues,
specifically prostrate and testicular
cancers.
Movember is a worldwide event
and was started in 2004. Men
who participate in Movember
shave their faces clean and smooth
on November 1, they spend the
remainder of the month growing
their Mo out. Men who participate
are called “Mo Bros” (women
who support them are called “Mo
Sistas”). Mo Bros are encouraged
to have annual check-ups in hopes
of increased early cancer detection.
Besides getting an annual checkup, the Movember movement
encourages men to be aware of any
family history of cancer, and to
adopt a healthier lifestyle.
The concept was brought to Citrus
County last year - on accident. Dale McClellan, owner of M&B
Dairy and chair of the Agriculture
Alliance of Citrus County had
been on vacation with his wife in
the mountains. While on vacation,
McClellan relaxed and didn’t shave. Upon his return, while at a meeting,
a fellow businessman asked him
“Are you doing that Movember
thing?”. McClellan was unaware of
the Movember movement so he
quickly did some research and
liked the concept. He sent a quick
summary of Movember in an email
to the Agriculture Alliance. Almost
instantly he received a response
back from Dorothy Pernu with
Seven Rivers Regional Medical
Center. She was intrigued and
wanted SRRMC to partner with the
Agriculture Alliance to bring the
first Movember movement to Citrus
County. “There is a fantastic job done to
raise awareness for women’s health
issues, specifically breast cancer,
in other months of the year. This
is our attempt to bring awareness to
the issues that affect men, especially
prostrate and testicular cancer.” said
McClellan. This year is the second year
Citrus County has participated in
Movember. Under the guidance
of the Agriculture Alliance along
with the lead “Mo Sistas”, Pernu
and Theressa Foster of Superior
Residences & Sunflower Springs
Assisted Living Facility teams
all around the county have been
created. Lollygagger’s Sports Pub
& Grill, Citrus County Board of
County Commissioners, and Citrus
95.3/The Fox 96.3 are a few of the
teams. Mo Bro’s are encouraged to share
their progress on the Citrus County
Movember Facebook page – www.
facebook.com/MovemberCitrus.
After the teams have grown their
Mo’s out all month they will meet
at Burkes of Ireland Pub in Crystal
River at 6:30pm on November 29 for
a Mo Show and Finale Party. There
will be a Mo contest with Biggest,
Lamest, and Best Looking Mo’s
taking home awards. Additionally
Burkes will have a silent auction,
celebrity bartenders, and food for
sale – with all the proceeds going to
the Movember Foundation. Page 9

On November 16 & 17 for the 17th
time, the Citrus County 4-H Foundation will host the Citrus Stampede Rodeo. Held at the Citrus County Fairgrounds in Inverness, this year’s event
is sponsored by Crystal Auto Group,
BrightHouse Networks, and Spires
Contracting Corporation. The Citrus Stampede Rodeo is part
of the Professional Rodeo Circuit Association, which has over 50 shows
across the country. Riders
are competing for a spot at
the Dodge RAM National
Circuit Finals Rodeo. Calf
roping, bull riding, and barrel racing are just a few of
the numerous events spectators will get to see. Besides the rodeo events there
will be games for the children, vendors, food, and a
mechanical bull.
The event benefits the 4-H Foundation which is the umbrella organization for the Citrus County 4-H Clubs. 4-H is an organization for the youth of
county. In 4-H children develop public
speaking skills, learn different aspects
of the agriculture arena, and participate
in numerous community service activities. Gates open at 5:30pm both nights. Advance tickets can be purchased at
both Chamber offices, the County 4-H
office in Lecanto, and the Fair office in

Yvette Baldner, Crystal River I’m thankful for Mike Reed from SunTrust who 22 years
ago helped me in opening my own business, Hot Heads the Art of Hair Inc. and for my loyal
customoers and supporters who have helped make my dream of owning a successful business
a reality. Dale Merrill, Homosassa Sunshine and Warm Weather
Kym Soluri Druga, North Carolina I’m thankful for how the community has joined
together to support Josh Langston White. I have never been more proud of my hometown
than in the time since Josh’s injury for all the amazing things the county has done to help him
and his family. Anne Adams, Crystal River I’m thankful for the parents of Citrus County. My
business takes me many places, and the parents of Citrus County really get involved with
their children’s lives. This is an awesome place to raise kids.
Joe Bell and Todd
Workman got spotted
at the Citrus Builders
Association Home &
Outdoor Show. Their

up.
Tracey Ellsworth Hollis, Hernando County I’m thankful for the “home” feeling of Citrus
County. I know if I wanted to I could move home and raise my girls and they would be happy.
Elizabeth Goodale-Yerian, Homosassa I’m thankful for Sheriff Jeff Dawsy and his
organization for keeping my children safe. Our school system also rocks!
Caitlin Carmichael, Inverness I am thankful for the Cove, Little League in Whispering
Pines Park, Cooterfest, Southern Hospitality, and hot days on the river eating boiled peanuts
and heading for a swim at Three Sisters!
Joellen Collazo, Hernando I am thankful for the opportunity to teach in the Citrus County
School system. I have taught here for 25 years and have had an amazing experience.

Sheri Salton, Inverness We love all the waterways through out Citrus County. Year round
we can hop on our boat with the kid and dog and spend the day basking in the sun on the
river soaking up as much fun as we can handle. There also really isn’t a more peaceful place
than the lakes around here. You can breathe in the fresh air and the scenes are like something
out of a movie, our county is the best kept secret which helps to preserve our small town
peacefulness.
