Welcome to the September edition of Live Wire and it is great to see the warmer weather returning, the rain staying away and hopefully people travelling in taxis more and more. In fact I recently heard that domestic occupancy rates are improving in hotels around the country and that has to be a positive thing for all of us. But that might not be enough…so Live TaxiEpay is trying to do more! How I hear you ask… This month there are several great initiatives that are being tested in 2 different states that add more value to our customers. In Sydney we have commenced the next stage of Live Loyalty, our own in house rewards program. We now have a great initiative that allows our customers to save 5% off their shopping, fuel, electronic goods and a wide range of other products. Imagine how much you spend each year on these items and now you save 5%! That could be worth over $1,000 per year and there are no hidden catches. Then in Melbourne we have helped launch the 3 cents per litre off LPG deal with United Petroleum. This is a great offer that again is free…no catch… no fine print…and all you have to do is come to the West Melbourne office and the team can provide you with a pre-completed form to sign and have your card ready for collection within a few days. Both of these programs are aimed at delivering more value for doing nothing more than being a customer of Live TaxiEpay and using your terminal. These are great initiatives that if you take full advantage of you really save you thousands of dollars per year. Talk to one of our team about these offers and if you have any other ideas please let us know and we will try to find a way to bring them to market. Good luck and happy driving… BUDGET PETROL CAMPSIE Publisher Live Payments Pty Ltd 1053 Bourke St, Waterloo NSW Tel: 1300 726 894 Email: [email protected] www.livepayments.com.au The opinions expressed by the contributors to this magazine are not necessarily shared by the publishers. State News State News Victoria Victoria Mr Katsiabanis said he would demand the VTD provide documentation proving the cameras met the strict criteria required. If not, he planned to arrange independent tests to confirm if the cameras were up to the task. $2800 Camera Fails Cabbies are demanding answers after the hi-tech camera in murdered driver Stephen Seymour’s taxi had to be sent overseas to try to retrieve images of his killer. Mr Seymour, 56, was stabbed to death in Mount Waverley last Wednesday. His cab was found crashed and burned out 4km away. Police on Friday said CCTV footage had not been destroyed, but just 24 hours later were told the manufacturer was “unable to access the footage”. VerifEye Technologies hopes specialists at its company headquarters in Canada will be able to extract the images, which would help identify the passenger thought to be responsible for Mr Seymour’s death. It is believed the killer was incinerated after he stole the taxi and crashed it into a power pole. Taxi industry heavyweights are demanding to know why the $2800 camera - compulsory in Victorian cabs - failed. At least one taxi operator will call the Victorian Taxi Directorate today demanding the return of more than $500,000 spent on security cameras for his 170-strong taxi fleet. Taxilink director Harry Katsiabanis said the cameras were supposed to be able withstand everything from fire to prolonged immersion in salt water. He said it was outrageous that one of the cameras had apparently failed when it was needed most. 8 GRANDFINAL WEEK TAC CUP Location: Etihad Stadium, Melbourne Date: 23rd September Time: 2:15pm BROWNLOW LIVE Auskick where the kids enjoy activities and meet the players and stars from the NAB AFL Rising Star program #2. What are your thoughts on a portable alert on a lanyard, like those worn by the service station attendants or the elderly? Recent attacks have seen our drivers pulled, dragged or taken from their vehicles and the M13 button is the only place an alert device is fitted, so once out of the car what help do our drivers have? Do you think the M13 button in cabs is a good option for a distress function in cars? Details to be advised The TAC Cup is an under 18’s AFL representative competition held in Victoria. It’s one of the primary sources of recruitment for AFL clubs. The TAC Cup provides an opportunity for regional players to participate in a high standard competition without having to relocate too far from home. Victorian Taxi association spokesman David Samuel said he hoped the images could still be saved. You may have seen me at the airport last month in my rain coat handing over flyers regarding our “Refer A Friend” promotion. We could hardly talk properly as you had to quickly run to your car or close your windows to avoid the rain. Well…… let me tell you, I suffered a cold and flu for a week! I’m so glad that we live in WA with great weather, and it looks like we are going to have an early Spring. Perfect weather to head out for a drink or two, watch a movie or enjoy the festivities around town. This is great news for taxi drivers as there are plenty of passengers out and about and it’s business as usual. Time to make money again! Remember, our “Refer A Friend” promotion will be on until the end of September. For example: If you introduce 10 friends you will make $300 for yourself and each of your friends will receive $30 each. Check the details on the flyers I handed out or page 35, for more information. It all depends on the details the customers give me whether I can track the item down or not. On Friday I received an email from a distressed customer who had left his bank card in the taxi just after paying. With the terminal ID I was able to find the drivers records but alas, I couldn’t get through on his phone number. I emailed the driver instead and got the following response: “Hi, I at once called the Westpac number on the back of the card and cancelled it. The banker who was on the other end of the line said that she will call the card owner and then cancel it. I guessed that this must be their protocol. The customers are always well protected when using Live. I am proud to be a good Samaritan member of the Live family.” 18 Thursday.....................9:30pm - 5:00am New Auburn Cashing Centre! Inside, I showed him the cards for dads and told him to pick one. Upon opening it, Dad read this message: “You’ve been like a father to me.” He looked at Ryan, puzzled. “No,” he replied. “I’m looking for one with money in it.” “Well, Dad,” Ryan tried to explain, “it was either that or the card that said, ‘Now that I’m a father too!’” TRADITIONAL PIZZA & CAN OF COKE $10 The Right Choice My 16-year-old brother, Ryan, was out late with friends one night. Suddenly he realised it was Father’s Day and he had neglected to buy a card for our dad. Selecting one, he brought it home and, somewhat sheepishly, presented it to our father. .00 When I looked back, Tyler was picking up one card after another, opening them up and quickly shoving them back into slots, every which way. “Tyler, what are you doing?” I asked. “Haven’t you found a nice card for Daddy yet?” Submitted by Terri Cook Submitted by Anne Carlson * EACH PICKUP Domino’s Spring Hill 1300 366 466 24 Cnr Boundary & Little Edwards Streets, Spring Hill QLD Voucher code sailaja. Many drivers have asked about the reports on TV in relation to the Fels recommendations in Victoria and if they would have an effect in South Australia. The taxi industry is regulated by State Governments and there are significant differences in each State which generally determines the efficiency in each State. All other states and territory governments have become taxi licence holders, with the exception of Queensland and South Australia, and lease out licences in competition to the private taxi plate owners and investors. In fact, in most states the Governments are the largest owners of taxi plates. However this has not assisted in keeping down cost in registration and insurance. Cost of registration in South Australia has now increased at Cost14% of registration in South Australia has now 13 and over the last two years and now sits at increased at 13 and 14% over the last two years $6,400pa, and now sits at $6,400pa not to mention the camera cost of $2,850 per car. On a bright note it was good news to hear that we were included to use the new bus lanes in Currie and Grenfell streets in the city. This has provided quicker and more efficient transport for taxi users and drivers, not getting tied up in the congestion, it is possible that this may lead to more bus and taxi lanes in the future. Two new managed ranks opened in July. We now have 6 managed ranks in the city and one at the ever popular tourist spot at Glenelg. The ranks have CCTV and there will be additional foot patrols by transit police assisting customer service. The King William street rank will have its layoff on the NAB rank and the customer service officer will be calling up cars when required. The East terrace, King William street, North tce, Pultney street and Morphett street ranks will operate from 11pm. Taxis picked up more than 258,000 passengers from these ranks last year which was an increase of 27% on previous year. Passengers have been pleased with the security aspect knowing that by waiting in line in an orderly fashion they will be given the next available cab. Fatigue is a general term used to describe the experience of being ‘sleepy’, ‘tired’ or ‘exhausted’. Fatigue is both a physiological and a psychological experience. Driver fatigue can severely impair judgement. Causes of Fatigue Inadequate amount or quality of sleep over an extended period How To Prevent Fatigue: For Drivers In-vehicle fatigue management strategies: Sustained mental or physical effort Use air conditioning to increase driver comfort and reduce the effects of carbon monoxide Disruption of the normal cycles of daytime activity and night sleep Take short breaks Environmental stresses during sleep (such as light, heat and noise) Medication (some medications cause drowsiness) Diagnosed or undiagnosed sleep disorders (sleep apnoea) Obesity/bad dietary habits Night work (causes sleep implications as daytime sleep is less restorative than nocturnal sleep) Workload and lifestyle choices (illness, childcare, sport, socialising, studying) How To Identify Fatigue Loss of attentiveness Slower reaction times Impaired judgement Feelings of drowsiness or tiredness Reduced alertness Repeated yawning Sore, red and tired eyes Wandering, disconnected thoughts Mood swings (feeling irritable and restless) Daydreaming Countermeasure fatigue with regular healthy food and drink. (Avoid excessive consumption of fatty, high calorie food which can cause sleepiness) How To Prevent Fatigue: For Operators General fatigue management strategies for your staff: Control and monitor shifts to minimise taxi driver fatigue. (Working in excess of 14 hours creates a significant safety risk) Reduce or eliminate irregular shift patterns. The impact of fatigue is greater for employees with irregular shift patterns Incorporate short breaks in shifts Arrange the driver’s roster to maximise the opportunity to recover from the effects or onset of fatigue Encourage health and fitness of drivers Provide information to promote driver health Carry plenty of drinking water Be aware if drivers have a second job Play the radio Does the driver’s lifestyle contribute to fatigue (sporting commitments, student, new parent, illness)? Wear sunglasses to minimise glare General fatigue management strategies: Stress management (work related and personal) Ensure adequate sleep (minimum six consecutive hours in a single 24 hour period, however the average required on a sustained basis is about seven to eight hours) Set up conditions at home so you can get as much sleep as possible. (Reduce noise, light and disturbances) Enlist family support for a peaceful environment when sleeping (particularly when sleeping in daylight) Improve general health and fitness. Exercise. Avoid being overweight Have regular health checks. Ensure that you do not have a sleep disorder or other medical conditions that could affect your driving ability The Prostate Awareness Foundation - Offers information, support and education about the treatment options available to those with prostate cancer - The object is to lessen the trauma, impact, problems and the depression associated with the disease - To encourage proactive responsibility for one’s own healing - We also offer information to those with a family history of prostate cancer who wish to take a preventative approach to the disease. A new smartphone application called ZabKab launched earlier this week that allows users to hail a yellow taxicab using their smartphone. ZabKab was developed by Flatiron Apps, a New York City based company, and while they launched their app in NYC, the company plans to roll out the application to other U.S. cities and international cities, according to their website Basically, Basically, the theapp appallows allowsusers userstotobroadcast broadcasttheir their GPS GPSlocation locationto totaxi taxidrivers driverswho whoare arealso alsousing usingthe the application. application. ZabKab is free for those trying to find a taxi and is available on the iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices. (A version for the BlackBerry will be available soon.) Users tap the ‘hail’ button on the app, which sends out their location, and then the cabs in the area will begin to appear on the map in the application for users to view. ZabKab users can also opt to include additional information to send to the cab driver, like how many people are in their party and if they need a cab that is wheelchair accessible. While Zabkab isn’t the first car service app, While Zabkab isn’t the first car service app, it isit is significant significantbecause becauseititallows allowsusers usersto tohail hailNYC NYCyellow taxicabs. (Other(Other car service apps apps like Uber, use yellow taxicabs. car service like Uber, useprivate privatecars carstotoprovide provideservice servicetotocustomers.) customers.) Developing an application for NYC yellow taxi cabs is a little bit tricky because of Taxi & Limousine Commission regulations (TLC) The TLC requires Medallion taxi drivers to only pick up hailing passengers. The drivers cannot be a part of a dispatch system or pre-arrange taxi services. So naturally, this presents a little bit of a challenge when trying to create an app that is supposed to make it easier to find a cab. ZabKab, however, does not offer a pre-arranged service, but rather allows taxis to see where customers are. The TLC also prohibits the Medallion taxi drivers from using a mobile device while they are driving a passenger, but the new application addresses this by only allowing the driver to view the app display when the car is at a standstill. When the cab starts to move the app display fades away. 40 Taxi Service For Dogs Rachel Leigh 11th August KALAMAZOO, MI (WFLX) - A unique business in michigan is getting a lot of attention. The meeting was called after Gail Beck-Souter, general manager of Beck Taxi, emailed several city officials and police to ask why some drivers have been given as many as 10 tickets at a time for bylaw infractions, which she says creates “bad relations between cab drivers and Toronto police.” For example, one Beck Taxi driver received nine For example, Beck Taxi 28, driver received tickets totalingone $975 on July including $65nine owed tickets totaling $975 on July 28, including $65 for not having change for a $20 bill, copiesowed of for not having change for a $20 bill, copies of tickets show. tickets show. She said the driver had to wait four hours while a police officer wrote the tickets, missing time from work. “No one says that cab drivers should get away with breaking the law. We’re just looking to hopefully get a better understanding between the two groups, between the drivers and police. Some of these tickets do look a little offside.” After cab drivers working at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport’s passenger transfer facility were briefly banned from washrooms last month, some cabbies who often work there started their own organization. Adegibite, the Billy Bishop Toronto Drivers’ Society’s spokesperson, says serial ticketing is a problem at the transfer facility because there isn’t enough space for drivers. It’s one of the group’s main issues, and he plans to attend Tuesday’s meeting. Often, Beck-Souter said, drivers will be lined up to pick up passengers from flights. If there aren’t enough drivers, more will be called in. “Then there’s too many and then they get tickets,” she said, calling it a catch-22 situation. The Toronto Port Authority is building a corral specifically for cabbies that may help the overcrowding. Licensing and standards officers have laid 293 charges for bylaw infractions by taxi drivers so far this year. Last year, they laid 519 charges, down from 1,463 in 2010. Police were unable to provide the number of Police were given unable provide tickets they’ve toto taxi drivers.the number of tickets they’ve given to taxi drivers. Const. Wendy Drummond said police don’t intentionally target cabbies when handing out tickets. While “there are definitely some people who do receive multiple tickets for a number of different infractions,” she suggested situations where drivers receive 10 tickets at a time are rare and isolated. 41 Puzzles Puzzles SUDOKU WORD FIND Win Muffin Break Vouchers! Similar to surviving in the wild, the key to survive in an uncertain economy is by being resourceful. Speaking from my own experience as a student with limited budget, the saying “it’s not what you earn that matters but how you spend” speaks the truth. So here are some practical daily tips to make the best out of your hard-earned dollars. Don’t buy the hypes: Always look for bargains: Herding behaviour is a very common human psychology. When hottest new item (usually electronics) is out in the market, there will be potential buyers lining up to get it on launch day. Sellers know this all too well and they practice what is called price-skimming, which means they set the price high the moment the product is released and reduce the price overtime. Unless the purchase relates to life and safety, there is no reason to buy the hypes. This is also applicable for anything seasonal; for instance, it’s better to buy winter clothes during summer when demand is low and retailers are forced to cut prices to clear their stock Whenever you need to buy new appliances, clothes, or anything really... Shop around to find the best deals! The Internet is an amazing tool for this exercise and competition has driven retailers into price warfare, which benefits us as consumers. For apparels in particular, non-branded items have at least the same quality as branded items and are sold at more reasonable prices since most of them are supplied from the same sources. There are a lot of hidden bargains at traditional markets (e.g. Victoria Market) and, unlike shopping in malls, you actually get to haggle! Homemade full-sized meals cost as low as $3/ meal while eating out costs at least $7/meal (and that’s for a fast food). That is a difference of $4/ meal, $12/day, or $84/week, and I am only using conservative figures for comparison but I am sure you can imagine how much can be potentially saved. Perth Cruise Ship Schedule N/A for September – Cruise Ship arrivals commence from Oct 2012 into Fremantle Stay healthy and productive: By not taking care of our health, we are actually doing a disservice to our personal finance. If we got sick, we would end up with medical bills and even if we had access to health benefits, we would still suffer from loss of productivity and potential income. And no amount of money can replace our health. So the best approach is to minimise the chance of getting sick at the first place.
