Fr. Fessio chats with one of our favorite novelists, Michael D. O’Brien
Do You Ever Read Novels?
That’s a Yes or No question. Here are some thoughts
on each possible answer:
No? Well, you should. Or if that sounds too moralistic: reading good novels can make you a better, happier
person, a “new self and nobler me” (Hopkins).
Really? Why? The reasons are many and space is too
short so I’ll give just one. You can call it an argument
from authority. (I’ll omit bad reasons for reading even
good novels.)
Who was the world’s greatest teacher? How did he
teach? He sometimes held outdoor conferences, gave
sermons—even an occasional homily—and did use the
method of the world’s second greatest teacher (Greek;
name begins with “S”). But he taught “with authority”
which means, among other things, that he was an “author” And mainly, he told stories.
God’s eternal Word became Incarnate in Jesus Christ.
And Jesus incarnated his teaching in stories we call
parables. He knew that was the best way for us to learn,
to grasp the non-successive (eternal truth) in the successive (temporal plot).
Every good story is an incarnation of truth, beauty,
and goodness—a participation in the Incarnate Word’s
incarnate words. That does not mean that a story, to be
good, has to be by or about Catholics. And, of course, it
can be good artistically without being good in the deepest sense.
But the stories that transform us as Jesus’ stories
transformed his disciples have to arise from an imagination steeped in Truth. (There’s a reason why the Catholic
Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings is the greatest story of the 20th
century.)
These are the kinds of stories that Ignatius Press seeks
to publish. We think you’ll enjoy them because they are
well told. We hope they will enrich you in a way only
stories can.
Yes? Then you should read good ones. See above for
an explanation.

Sacred Scripture and Catholic teaching more
fully, including the deep links between the two.”

BEST-SELLER
It’s already one of our best-selling titles. Discover The Didache Bible for yourself: Why
another Bible version and what does The Didache Bible mean?
First, this is not a new Bible translation. The Didache Bible uses the RSV 2nd CE translation of
the Bible (same as in the Ignatius Bible). It is called The Didache Bible because this version of
the Bible has extensive footnotes based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a feature that
is unique to this new Bible edition. This Bible is a collaborative effort between Ignatius Press
and the Midwest Theological Forum, publishers of the Didache Series.
Besides extensive footnotes, The Didache Bible includes full color biblical maps, 106
apologetical explanations to common questions, a comprehensive glossary and topical
index, and two ribbon markers.

Who Designed the Designer? E
The Noonday Devil
T
T
Acedia, the Unnamed Evil of Our Times
Jean-Charles Nault, O.S.B.
A Rediscovered Path to God’s Existence
Michael Augros
he “New Atheists” are pulling no punches.
If the world of nature needs a designer, they
ask, then why wouldn’t the designer itself need a
designer, too? Or if it can exist without any designer behind it, then why can’t we just say the same
for the universe and wash our hands of a designer
altogether?
Rising to these and similar challenges, philosopher Michael Augros poses rarely asked questions
that enable his readers to find out for themselves:
• The impossibility of a “universe without a
cause”
• Why nature must be the offspring of intelligence
• Why an undesigned designer is not only a
possibility, but a necessity
• Why the first cause of all things must be the
most perfect being
Here is essential reading for all people who care
about contemplating God, not exclusively as a bestexplanation for the findings of science, but also as
the surprising-yet-inevitable implication of our
commonsense contact with reality.
he “noonday devil” is the demon of acedia, a
gloomy combination of weariness, sadness, and
a lack of purposefulness. It robs a person of his joy.
Abbot Nault says that acedia is the most oppressive of demons. Although its name harkens back to
antiquity and the Middle Ages, and seems to have
been largely forgotten, acedia is experienced by
countless modern people who describe their condition as depression, melancholy, burn-out, or even
mid-life crisis. He shows how acedia afflicts persons
in all states of life— priests, religious, and married
or single laymen. He details not only the symptoms
and effects of acedia, but also remedies for it.
“A must-read book! It offers most helpful and
encouraging insights on a long-overdue topic.”
—Johnnette Benkovic,
Founder, Women of Grace®
“A revelation, a modern-day treatise on an ancient
and yet familiar foe. This book can transform your
spiritual life!”
—Vinny Flynn, Author, 7 Secrets of the Eucharist
“The simple, direct style of this work makes the
reader feel involved and challenged to consider
anew what is essential in his existence.”
— Marc Cardinal Ouellet,
Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops (Rome)
“This is, quite simply, the single best book I have
ever read on what most of us would regard as
the single most important question of philosophy:
Does God exist? It will inevitably become a classic.”
—Peter Kreeft, PhD.
Professor of Philosophy, Boston College
“A must read for anyone who takes the spiritual
life seriously. Christ’s passion and death on the
cross is the most perfect answer to the terrible evil
that tells man his very existence is meaningless.”
—Mother Dolores Hart, OSB,
Author, The Ear of the Heart
“Though many sound books have been written
about the ‘first cause/mover’ proof of Aristotle and
St. Thomas, this is the most accessible and illustrative rendition I have encountered. ”
—Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J.,
Author, New Proofs for the Existence of God
Michael Augros, Ph.D. teaches at Thomas Aquinas
College in Santa Paula, California. His writing
has appeared in such journals as The Thomist,
Angelicum, and National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly.
Dom Jean-Charles Nault, O.S.B., has been the
abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Wandrille
in France, since 2009. He entered the monastery in
1988, and received from Pope Benedict XVI, then
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, the first Henri de Lubac
Prize for his doctoral thesis on acedia.

Finding True Happiness E
Redeemed by Grace E
Satisfying Our Restless Hearts
Robert Spitzer, S.J., PhD.
A Catholic Woman’s Journey to Planned
Parenthood and Back
Ramona Treviño with Roxane Salonen
O
ne of the hottest topics in contemporary culture is happiness—so much so that the United
Nations declared an International Happiness Day
in response to the immense popularity of Pharrell
Williams’ song “Happy”. The explanation for this
current fixation seems to lie in the contrary phenomenon—unhappiness. Despite the fact that we
have tremendous access to every imaginable form
of entertainment, we experience a pervading sense
of insecurity, emptiness, and malaise amid sporadic
peak experiences.
Finding True Happiness attempts to provide a way
out of this personal and cultural vacuum by helping
people to identify and then reach for happiness. As
Aristotle noted 2,400 years ago, happiness is the one
thing we can choose for its own sake—everything
else is chosen for the sake of happiness.
Finding True Happiness is both a philosophical
itinerary and a practical guidebook for life’s most
important journey—from the mundane and the
meaningless to transcendent fulfillment No other
book currently available combines such breadth of
practical advice and such depth of philosophical,
psychological, and spiritual wisdom.
P
regnant at 16, Ramona Treviño entered an abusive marriage, which ended in divorce. Wanting
to help girls in similar tough situations, she took
a job as the manager of a Planned Parenthood
facility. However, Ramona began to grapple with
whether she was doing women more harm than
good, setting her on a path to seek the truth, no
matter where it might lead. This compelling story
tells of Ramona’s struggle to reconcile her identity
as a daughter of God with a world that sends conflicting messages concerning the source of our dignity. It is the honest, heartfelt account of a woman
who, with the help of grace, overcame the wounds
of her own past while becoming an agent of healing for others.
“A riveting story. A powerful tale that offers important insights on the fight for life in the modern age.”
—Jennifer Fulwiler,
Author, Something Other Than God
“A must-read book! It shows us that no matter how
far we stray from God, his mercy can always bring
us back.”
—Shawn Carney,
National Director, 40 Days for Life
“With reason, with the logic of both the mind and
the heart, Robert Spitzer not only convinces us
that happiness is within everyone’s grasp but also
shows us how to seize it. This is an intelligent,
warm, and life-changing book.”
—Dean Koontz,
#1 New York Times best-selling author
“An enthralling, page-turning memoir. You won’t
want to put this book down!”
— Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle,
EWTN TV Host
“A book you won’t be able to put down! It’s a powerful and painfully true story you won’t forget.”
—Teresa Tomeo,
Radio Host, Author of Extreme Makeover
“All who are interested in true happiness—and
finding it—will find this book a very valuable contribution to their search.”

Communion with Christ E

When is Marriage Null?
According to St. Teresa
Benedicta of the Cross
Sister M. Regina van den Berg
Guide to the Grounds of Matrimonial
Nullity for Pastors, Counselors, and
Lay Faithful
Paolo Bianchi
S
aint John Paul II declared that the great challenge
for Christians today is to become “the home and
school of communion.” St. Teresa Benedicta (Edith
Stein) is a sure guide to attaining the communion for
which every human heart longs. This beautiful indepth work examines St. Teresa’s life and writings
in the context of the “spirituality of communion”,
providing wonderful insights to help us grow in
communion with Christ.
Dr. Alice von Hildebrand, in the foreword, says
Edith Stein’s message “is above her time” and that
the author “is well qualified to write such a book.”
Sister Regina explores in detail Edith Stein’s theory
of empathy as developed in her doctoral dissertation, as well as her theory of community. Sister
Regina has also used a number of Edith Stein’s
writings which, until this work, have not yet been
available in English translation.
M
any marriages are “ended” by separation or
divorce, but for the baptized Christian they
remain valid marriages forever.
There are, however, cases in which a Christian
marriage can be recognized as null, i.e. it never
existed.
This book, written by a specialist with a gift for
clarity on a complicated, sensitive issue, is a guide
for a first approach to the problems related to the
conditions for eventually declaring the nullity of a
canonical Christian marriage.
This work is an indispensable aid for the pastors
of souls, for Catholic counselors, and can be very
useful also for anyone who has serious questions
about the validity of his own marriage.
The primary purpose of this work is to provide
clear, well-founded information in sufficient quantity to parish priests and to all who will act as counselors in these matters, either in formally organized
parochial counseling services, or in other possible
forms of collaboration with the parish priest, or else
in the ecclesiastical tribunals themselves as a step
previous to the possible introduction of the case.
Among the areas he covers are: Violation of the
freedom of consent; Error about a person; Exclusion
of offspring; Exclusion of fidelity; Incapacity to
consent; Incapacity to assume the essential obligations of marriage; Conditional consent.
“A clear, careful study that reveals the depth and
breadth of the thought of philosopher and martyr
Edith Stein, as relevant today as ever.”
—Colleen Carroll Campbell,
Author, My Sisters the Saints
“An ideal introduction for anyone wishing to learn
how one of the greatest saints of our time envisioned and lived the ‘science of the Cross.’ “
—Dawn Eden, Author, My Peace I Give You
“Van den Berg penetrates to the heart of Stein’s
teaching, presenting it with a single minded focus
and accuracy, which allows Stein’s transformative
concept of communion to fully emerge“
—Dr. Elizabeth A. Mitchell, S.C.D., author of
Artist and Image: Artistic Creativity and Personal
Formation in the Thought of Edith Stein
Paolo Bianchi, born in Milan, Italy in 1954, holds a
degree in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian
University and is judicial vicar for the ecclesiastical region of Lombardy. He is the author of many
articles on matrimonial law.
Sister M. Regina van den Berg, F.S.G.M., obtained
her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Catholic
University of America. She has served in various
apostolates for her religious community and currently resides in Rome.

hese three novellas from acclaimed German writer Gertrud von le
Fort display her mastery as a dramatist of ideas. The Wife of Pilate
imagines the slow, arduous transformation of an aristocratic woman,
mentioned in the New Testament, from a pagan into a Christian saint, as
she is honored in the Byzantine Church. Plus Ultra takes us into the high
politics of early sixteenth-century Europe, and into the soul of a lonely
young lady at court who knows she has attracted the intoxicating but
dangerous attention of the Emperor Charles V. At the Gate of Heaven takes
the clash between astronomical discoveries and the Roman Inquisition
trial of Galileo as the backdrop for harrowing reflections about man’s
place in the cosmos.

From the Kippah to the Cross E
Radical Discipleship E
F
W
Consecrated Life and the Call to Holiness
Cardinal Francis Arinze
ith 2015 deemed the “Year of the Consecrated
Life” by Pope Francis, this work is a very
timely one—for this year, or anytime. This book is
a beautiful way for Catholics to participate in this
Church-wide celebration by coming to a deeper
understanding of the consecrated life.
Radical Discipleship illuminates the vocation and
the consecrated state in the Body of Christ, beginning with a look at the origins of the consecrated life
in scripture and among the early Christians. It then
reflects upon:
• The different forms this radical life takes
• The vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience
• Community life as it pertains to consecrated life
• The prophetic aspect of the consecrated life
• The impact of the consecrated state on the
Church and on society
Alongside these fascinating topics, Cardinal
Arinze addresses some of the problems faced by
consecrated people, and how these difficulties have
led some to abandon this vocation. In examining
the struggles specific to the consecrated state, the
Cardinal seeks to encourage other consecrated persons to persevere in their vocation. He further calls
the entire Church to support the consecrated life
and those who have dedicated themselves to Christ
in this way.
Although filled with substantive information,
even the most involved sections are presented in an
engaging, readable and reflective style. The book is
not, as the Cardinal explains, “a dissertation based
on deep research on the theology and canon law on
the consecrated life”. Radical Discipleship is rather
a reflection, written for consecrated people, other
laity and clergy alike, and offers wonderful material
for thought and prayer. It is Cardinal Arinze’s hope
that his work will make the consecrated life “better
understood, loved, lived and promoted”.
A Jew’s Conversion to Catholicism
Jean-Marie Élie Setbon
rom the Kippah to the Cross tells the moving
conversion story of Jean-Marie Élie Setbon (née
Jean-Marc Setbon). Raised in a non-observant Jewish
family, Jean-Marie first encountered Jesus Christ on
a crucifix at the age of eight. He felt an inexplicable
attraction to Christ on the cross and would spend
hours contemplating Him and began to develop a
deeply personal relationship with Christ. Finally, at
fifteen, unable to bear his double-life any longer,
Jean-Marie resolved to convert to Catholicism in
spite of the scandal it would cause. But God had
other plans.
Instead, Jean-Marie ended up delving deeper
into the faith of his ancestors, moving to Israel
to pursue rabbinical formation and returning to
France eight years later as an ultra-Orthodox Jew.
There he found work at a Jewish school and synagogue, married and had seven children. But, in
spite of his sincere dedication to his Jewish faith,
Jean-Marie’s love and attraction to Jesus remained,
becoming the source of a long and difficult internal
struggle. Jean-Marie’s conversion is a story about
the ties of identity, about the battle between reason
and the desires of the heart, but above all it is a love
story between Christ, the lover—the relentless yet
patient pursuer—and man, his beloved.
“A gripping, unspeakably beautiful account of a
human soul intensely seeking God, and a God who is
intensely in love with us. It shows how the Catholic
Church is the ultimate fulfillment of Judaism’s love
for, and longing for, the Messiah—Jesus.”
—Roy Schoeman, Author, Salvation is from the Jews
“An absolutely riveting story! Filled with twists and
turns, it will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is
no exaggeration to state that this book would make
for an epic film!” —Fr. Donald Calloway, M.I.C.,

—available LATE APRIL 2015—
The Coup at Catholic University
Daily Reflections for the Lenten Season
Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C.
The 1968 Revolution in American
Catholic Education
Peter M. Mitchell
M
“An extraordinarily rich and detailed account of
what was perhaps the crucial event in modern
American Catholic higher education. It should be
on every short list of indispensable historical studies of the post-Vatican II Church in America.”
—James Hitchcock, PhD., St. Louis University
“This beautiful work draws on a lifetime of spiritual wisdom of a holy Abbess, and the richness
of her many years leading her community. She
teaches us how to pray well. She guides us into
what was once familiar territory but now becomes
new treasures of grace.”
—Mother Dolores Hart, OSB,
Author, The Ear of the Heart
T
he year 1968 witnessed perhaps the greatest revolution in the history of the Catholic Church in
the United States. It was led by Fr. Charles Curran,
professor of Theology at the Catholic University of
America in Washington, with more than 500 theologians who signed a “Statement of Dissent” that
declared Catholics were not bound in conscience
to follow the Church’s teaching in the encyclical of
Pope Paul VI, Humanae Vitae.
This book uses never-before published material
from the personal papers of the key players at CUA
to tell the inside story of the dramatic events that
unfolded there. Beginning with the 1967 faculty-led
strike in support of Curran, this book reveals the
content of the internal discussions between the key
bishops on the CUA Board of Trustees.
This work attempts to disprove both the standard “liberal” and “conservative” interpretation of
the events of 1968, suggesting that the culture of
dissent was a direct fruit of the excessive legalism
and authoritarianism which marked the Church in
the years preceding Vatican II. The polarization in
1968 has continued to define the experience of many
American Catholics and has had an ongoing effect
on Catholic education.
Fr. Peter Mitchell is a priest of the of the Diocese
of Green Bay. He received his doctorate in Church
History from the Pontifical Gregorian University,
Rome, in 2009. He has spent much of his priesthood
working in Catholic education.
other Mary Francis, abbess of a Poor Clare
Monastery for over forty years, left an enduring legacy in her writings and in the conferences
she gave to her spiritual daughters. In this work she
presents beautiful meditations on the liturgical season of Lent, revealing the treasures of the liturgy to
Christians in all walks of life. Her insight into Holy
Scripture and her poet’s heart engendered reflections that illuminate the daily Mass readings in a
fresh and attractive way.
These meditations enlighten the reader to see
conversion as positive and enriching, and help us
to understand that the generous embrace of Lenten
penance has a purpose and brings a wondrous
reward: deeper union with God. She was a true
daughter of Saint Francis of Assisi, who found perfect joy by turning away from self to God.
As a spiritual guide, Mother Mary Francis excels
in the art of persuasion, aware that the human heart
cannot be forced but only gently led to holiness. She
makes this goal attractive and desirable by tirelessly
explaining why striving for holiness is the happiest
and wisest way to live. This book provides a wealth
of material for plundering the riches of the Lenten
season and for deepening one’s spiritual life. Her
meditations are profound and timeless, not changing from year to year, thus providing a lifetime of
Lenten meditations in this one volume.

“Many years ago, Fr. de Lubac showed me his
handwritten Carnets du Concile and said, with a
twinkle in his eye: ‘Here’s what really happened at
the Council.’ He then recounted some of the more
bizarre conversations he had witnessed. This was
before Ignatius Press was even a twinkle in my eye.
I’m delighted we can now publish this.”

Vatican Council Notebooks E
Volume One • Henri de Lubac
S
urprising news!” With these words, Fr. Henri de
Lubac,S.J., whose orthodoxy had been so vigorously attacked, responded to the announcement
of his selection to participate in the 2nd Vatican
Council. His participation as a theologian and expert
would make a lasting impact on the Council, and
his insights and comments are recorded in this longawaited volume.
De Lubac does not hesitate to express clearly
what he thinks of the theologians around him, of
the new concepts appearing because of the Council,
or of the problems he judges to be most serious for
the Christian faith. These Notebooks invite us to a
greater historical and theological understanding of
the Council.
Besides information about the numerous aspects
of the conciliar assembly, what makes the testimony
of these notebooks so captivating is the strongly
rendered presence of men and their psychology.
De Lubac excels in sketching the portrait of the
participants with only a few words. Among the
many interesting encounters, he tells of deepening
his acquaintance with Josef Ratzinger, whom he
describes as a “theologian as peaceable and kindly
as he is competent”. In the same way, during the
long discussion over the drafting of the constitution Gaudium et Spes, he observed the assertiveness
of Karol Wojtyła, whose interventions struck him
because of the seriousness, the rigor, and the solidity of his faith, which created in him a lively sense of
spiritual friendship, which was reciprocated.

NEW IGNATIUS CRITICAL EDITIONS
T
The Ignatius Critical Editions
he Ignatius Critical Editions present a tradition-oriented approach to reading Western classics. While
many critical editions view literature through the lens of modernism and post-modernism, this series
offers critical examinations informed by the Judeo-Christian heritage as passed down through the ages—
the same heritage that provided the crucible in which the great authors formed these classic works.
Edited by acclaimed literary biographer Joseph Pearce, the Ignatius Critical Editions provide essays and
footnotes that analyze works in light of the Western tradition, allowing the reader to meet the authors in
their element.

Jane Eyre E
Charlotte Brontë • Edited by Jill Kriegel
ne of the finest novels ever written, Jane Eyre is also one of the most
misunderstood masterpieces of world literature. Whereas most modern
teaching of the text misreads or misinterprets Charlotte Brontë’s devout
and profoundly ingrained Christian faith and intentions, this critical edition
emphasizes the semi-autobiographical dimension of the novel, exposing
feminist critiques of the work as being woefully awry and illustrating Brontë’s
belief in the hard-earned, hard-learned blessings of sanctity and reverence.

hat are two sisters of uncertain fortunes to do when the death of their
father exiles their family to live in the countryside of southwestern
England? Why, fall in love, of course! Through her deft unraveling of the
dramatically different romantic fates of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, Jane
Austen displays her singular mastery of the English language and her equally
masterful invention of colorful and realistic characters. The author’s appreciation of what it is to be human, grounded in her deeply convicted Christianity,
illuminates the tale with special wisdom. In this, her first published novel, we
see the sense and sensibility of Miss Austen herself, which combine to form
the brilliance that shines forth in all of her works—a brilliance enlivened by
her remarkable sense of humor and the affectionate kindness that could only
be born of a gracious Christian spirit.

Othello E
William Shakespeare • Edited by Joseph Pearce
ne of the four great tragedies—alongside Hamlet, King Lear, and
Macbeth—Othello is among the darkest of Shakespeare’s plays, illumining the shadows of the gloomiest recesses of the human psyche and serving
as a damning indictment of the world in which it was written. A cautionary tale of the destructiveness of sin and the ruinous consequences of bad
philosophy, Othello seems to express Shakespeare’s rage at the cynicism and
brutality of the age in which he lived. From the Machiavellian menace of
Iago to the blind and prideful jealousy of Othello, this classic of world literature shows us the shadow falling over a society that has turned its back on
the light and life of virtue.

The Romantic Poets: Blake, Wordsworth and Coleridge
Edited by Robert Asch and Joseph Pearce
he word “romantic” has so many varied meanings that C. S. Lewis
quipped it should be deleted from our vocabulary. Yet, from the perspective of English literature, “romantic” is associated, first and foremost,
with the poetry of Romanticism, the movement that accentuated the
aesthetic value of emotion, human experience, and the majesty of nature.
In this volume the finest works of the first generation of Romantic Poets—
Blake, Wordsworth, and Coleridge—are assembled in an accessible and yet
scholarly manner, together with a selection of contemporary criticism by
tradition-oriented experts, in order to introduce these poets to a new generation of readers.

Redimida por la gracia El camino de una mujer católica
hacia Planned Parenthood y su regreso E
Ramona Treviño con Roxane Salonen
A

Andrew Apostoli, C.F.R.
A

PETER KREEFT’S BOOK PICKS
READ THE BOOKS THAT INSPIRED
PETER KREEFT!
One of our favorite writers is Peter Kreeft (seen here visiting Ignatius Press). A beloved professor and prolific author,
Peter has inspire multiple generations of Catholics with
his books and teaching. We asked him to share some of his
favorite Ignatius Press books, and here’s what he wrote:
The very best and clearest
introduction I have ever
read to a difficult and controversial subject, mysticism, especially its distinctively Christian form in St.
John of the Cross and the
Carmelites. Dubay shows
how Christian mysticism
lights up scripture as nothing else does.
A rare opportunity to find
a wonderfully profound
teacher and scholar writing

I’m never bored with these.
Their characters are as real

Augros is the clearest new

Not God’s Type An Atheist Academic Lays Down Her Arms E
Holly Ordway
This is the story of a glorious defeat. Ordway, an atheist academic, was
convinced that faith was superstitious nonsense. As a well-educated
college English professor, she saw no need for just-so stories about God.
Secure in her fortress of atheism, she was safe (or so she thought) from
any assault by irrational faith.
But then something happened... How did she come to “lay down her
arms” in surrender to Christ—and then, a few years later, enter into the
Catholic Church?
This is the moving account of her unusual journey.
“Holly Ordway manages to dig into meaty intellectual topics without
losing the personal, relatable elements of her story. The result is a book
that has the rare combination of being both deeply intellectual and
deeply human.”

THE HOBBIT PARTY
E
The Vision of Freedom That Tolkien Got, and the West Forgot
Jonathan Witt and Jay W. Richards
Anyone who has read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings can gather that
their author hated tyranny, but few know that the novelist who once
described himself as a hobbit “in all but size” was—even by hobbit standards—a zealous proponent of economic freedom and small government. At a time when many are concerned that the West is sliding into
political, economic, and moral bankruptcy, authors Jonathan Witt and
Jay W. Richards show us how J. R. R. Tolkien has, in his beloved novels
of Middle-Earth, drawn us a map to freedom.
“Witt and Richards brilliantly delve into the most profound depths of
Tolkien’s endlessly fascinating soul. This work offers us a true feast: the
feast of nobility, truth, goodness, and beauty.”

Essential Principles of a Just Society and Humane Culture
Sheila Liaugminas
In their founding documents, the United States and the United Nations
recognized the principles that all men have inherent dignity and that
they deserve equal rights. They both have declared those principles the
conditions fundamental to freedom, justice, and peace. Yet both the United
States and the United Nations have within them powerful political forces
passing laws or resolutions that violate first principles and put at risk
the most vulnerable populations. This book goes beyond the politics of
pragmatism and cultural relativism to reacquaint the reader with first
principles. It demonstrates what the Church has to say about the most
important issues of our time and why.

IGNATIUS PRESS NOVELS
WHY NOVELS? It’s sometimes easy to forget
the importance of storytelling. But it’s a vital
and central part of how humans communicate
with one another, as well as how the Church
communicates. Think of the Gospels: when
Jesus wants to teach his disciples, he uses
parables—stories—to illustrate the teaching.
And in our liturgy, the words used in the consecration of the Eucharist are part of a narrative.
The novels we publish at Ignatius Press are
chosen because they express certain truths;
not in a didactic way, but in page-turning narratives that illustrate the truth of what being
human is truly about.

Theology and Sanity E
“Theology and Sanity is simply one of the best books on the
Catholic faith ever written. Period. It offers clear thinking (sanity) when it comes to God and what he has created (everything
else). Frank Sheed was, like C.S. Lewis, a master of lucidity. It was
Sheed who first led me to think seriously about Catholicism.”

blogosphere caricature.) The Glory of the Lord is the best place to start. It’s a large volume, and
profound. But the 126 page Introduction is quite readable and presents an excellent overview
of his masterful trilogy. ‘Beauty is the word that shall be our first.’”

Love Alone Is Credible E
Hans Urs von Balthasar
In this book, von Balthasar
delves deeper into his exploration of what love means, what
makes the divine love of God,
and how we must become lovers of God in the footsteps of
saints like Francis de Sales, John
of the Cross and Therese of
Lisieux. Based in the theological aesthetic form, Love Alone is
Credible brings a fresh perspective on an oft-explored subject. A deeply insightful
and profound theological meditation.

Engagement With God
Hans Urs von Balthasar
Balthasar writes about God’s
involvement with man and
man’s
involvement
with
God in the Old and the New
Testaments. He shows how that
interaction of the divine with
the human reveals the meaning
of true freedom, and shows that
God’s free revelation of himself
in Christ is an invitation to enter
into the realm of absolute and
divine freedom, in which alone human freedom can
be fully realized.

The Splendor
of the Church E
Henri de Lubac
Considered by many the bright
jewel among the many enriching books of de Lubac, this is
a hymn to the beauty of the
Church at whose hands he had
unjustly suffered. De Lubac’s
profound insights significantly contributed to Vatican II’s
Dogmatic Constitution on the
Church, Lumen Gentium, especially in its treatment on the Church as mystery and
as the Sacrament of Christ.

Contemplation, Who Is a
‘‘Mature Christian’’?, Love, The
Form of the Christian Life, How
Should a Christian Serve the
World—and How Not?, and
Prayer, Hope, and the Profane.

Catholicism Christ and
the Common Destiny of Man
Henri de Lubac
De Lubac gathers from throughout the breadth of Catholic tradition elements which he synthesizes to show the essentially
social and historical character of
the Catholic Church, and how
the Church is the fulfillment of
the person within society.
“For me, the encounter with
this book became an essential
milestone on my theological journey.”

Louis Bouyer
How does the Church perceive
herself? Fr. Louis Bouyer sets
out to answer that question, in
light of Tradition and theological reflection through the centuries, but especially by drawing
on the teachings of Vatican II.

thorough synthesis of ecclesiology after the Council and offers
a foundation for sound ecumenical discussion about the nature of the Church.

Adrienne von Speyr
Von Speyr had a deep communion with the saints and would
see them while in a state of mystical prayer. She was able to put
herself in the place of various
individuals to see and describe
their prayer, their whole attitude
before God. Among the long list
of saints in this book are St. John
the Apostle, St. Augustine, St.
Francis, St. Thomas Aquinas, St.
Ignatius of Loyola, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the

We Have Found Mercy E
Cardinal Christoph Schönborn
The message of Divine Mercy
as communicated through
Sister Faustina is both a starting
point and a recurring theme for
Cardinal Schönborn’s discussion of God’s merciful love. He
explores the presence of God’s
great mercy in the Scriptures,
Tradition, the life of Christ, and
the sacraments and works of the
Church, while raising important
questions along the way, such as, “What is the relationship between mercy and justice?”

Mary E
The Church at the Source
Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI)
and Hans Urs von Balthasar
Two great theologians endeavor to recover the centrality of
Marian doctrine and devotion for the contemporary
Church, offering a spiritually
rich approach to Mariology
that brings into new relief the
Marian contours of ecclesial
faith. Ratzinger and von Balthasar show that Mary is
both the embodiment of the Church, and the mother
who co-operates in giving birth to the Church in the
souls of believers.

Adrienne von Speyr
As always, von Speyr here draws
from the abundance of her own
contemplation which keeps continually in view the harmonious unity of Christian dogmatic
truth; she gives to others what
has been offered to her in contemplation, without exegetical
notes or any attempt at scholarship. Since she is speaking to
novices, the train of thought is
simple and practical, yet rich in depth. As one reads
through this book, he will find in it a kind of synthesis
of Adrienne von Speyr’s spirituality.

Christ the Ideal
of the Priest
Bl. Columba Marmion
The great spiritual writer, Fr.
Columba Marmion, wrote this
classic work on the priesthood
to show the holiness that priests
are called to, and how that
holiness can only be attained
through close union with, and
imitation of, Jesus Christ. While
aimed at the clergy, this profound spiritual work will also
be of immense inspiration for laity in coming to a
deeper understanding of the true nature and calling
of the priesthood.

Faustina Apostle of Divine Mercy
This award-winning movie is a beautiful film on the mystical
life of St. Faustina, and the revelations she received from
Jesus about his Divine Mercy. It will inspire you with the
amazing story of her mystical experiences as a nun living in
a convent in Poland in the early 20th century, about Jesus’
requests for her to spread this devotion to his Mercy, and how
she overcame the great opposition she faced in accomplishing her mission. Jesus asked her to have an image painted
and venerated of him and his Divine Mercy, that special
prayers be said to invoke his great mercy, and that a feast
day be established to honor his Divine Mercy.
This unique movie is based on her own writings from
her acclaimed “Diary”, which has become a worldwide bestselling spiritual work. Neglected for decades, her revelations
and mission were championed and approved by Pope John
Paull II, who canonized Faustina in 2000 as the first saint of
the new millennium. Actress Dorota Segda received great
acclaim by European film critics for her portrayal of Faustina.
This special DVD has many extras, including a 30 min. feature on the “Making Of” the movie, a documentary on the places where Faustina received her revelations, historical images,
and more. In Polish with English and Spanish subtitles.

The Life and Message of
Blessed John Henry Newman
An influential teacher, a distinguished theologian, a convert to
Catholicism, a man who endured many trials, and a father of
souls—Blessed John Henry Newman (1801 - 1890)—remains
as fresh and relevant today as he was during his lifetime.
Among his many devotees is Pope Benedict XVI, who personally travelled to England to beatify Newman, whom he
considers one of his own greatest teachers.
This engaging film, shot on location in England, presents the
inspiring story of Newman’s life and visits all the places where
he lived and worked. Beautifully photographed, from London
to Oxford, and Littlemore to Birmingham, each setting reveals
an important stage of Newman’s life and holiness. Along the
way we explore his writings and teachings, his pastoral zeal for
his students and parishioners, his journey of conversion to the
Catholic faith, and his enduring message for Christians of today.

The Jewish Cardinal: The
extraordinary true story
of Jean-Marie Lustiger—a
Jewish convert to Catholicism at 13, half-orphaned
by the Holocaust, who
became archbishop of
Paris under Pope John Paul
II—is brought to life in
this remarkable film. Like
St. Edith Stein, Lustiger
insisted on religious dual
citizenship, embracing
Christ without repudiating his Jewish heritage. A
fascinating exploration of
his struggles.
Sophie Scholl: The Final
Days: Not many films
make moral goodness and
courage as compelling as
this riveting, fact-based catand-mouse drama pitting
a bright young German
college student against a
canny Nazi interrogator regarding her involvement in
an underground resistance
movement, the White Rose.
Throughout her ordeal,
Sophie’s Christian faith
remains the cornerstone of
her moral strength and her
critique of Nazi ideology.
Of Gods and Men: I could
count on one hand the
films about which I could
say, “You want to know
what being a Christian
means? Watch this.” This is
one. A fact-based story of
French Trappist monks in
Algeria living harmoniously with Muslim neighbors
but harassed by Islamist
militants, it’s a wholly
positive yet credible portrait of the Christian ideal
at its most winsome.

The Scarlet and the Black:
Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer are excellent
in this gripping, factbased WWII-era thriller,
also known as The Scarlet
Pimpernel of the Vatican.
It’s a battle of wits and
nerves between SS officer
Herbert Kappler, tasked
with maintaining order in
Nazi-occupied Rome, and
Vatican official Msgr. Hugh
O’Flaherty, who does his
best to help fugitive Allied
POWs avoid recapture.
Miracle of St. Thérèse: The
best cinematic exploration
of St. Therese’s spirituality is this pious but
little-known French film.
Not to be confused with
the arty, minimalist 1986
Alain Cavalier film or the
2004 biopic by Leonardo
DeFilippis, this film offers
real insights not only into
the details of the Little
Flower’s life, but the heart
of her “Little Way” of
spiritual childhood.
Prince of Egypt: Ambitious, epic and emotionally
satisfying, this is among
the very best retellings of
the Moses story, bringing more awe than any
other screen version to the
burning bush and the Red
Sea. Val Kilmer and Ralph
Fiennes lead a stellar voice
cast. The small-screen
sequel Joseph: King of

Prince of Egypt /

The film vividly captures the essence of Mary’s profound faith

the Mother of the Messiah, her compassionate humanity and concern for others, and the deep love that she and Jesus shared for
one another. This movie underscores her special role in God’s plan
for our redemption, her unique relationship with Christ, and the tremendous suffering that she endured in union with his passion and
death, as well as her serene joy at his Resurrection.

Campiotti (Bakhita, St. Giuseppe Moscati) and written by
Francesco Arlanch (Restless Heart, Pope John Paul II). Also starring Andreas Pietschmann as Jesus, Luca Marinelli as Joseph,
