Everyone knows that reading is important, but have you ever asked yourself why? Here are some reasons why it is important to read: 1. 2. 3. 4. Getting a bigger vocabulary. A bigger vocabulary leads to bigger knowledge, which leads to getting into a good college! If you're someone who doesn’t read, you have a very rare chance of getting into a college. Expanding creativity and imagination. If you read, your creativity is greatly expanded. You get many good ideas from reading. Getting a job. You can’t start or work at a business if you don’t know a wide variety of words. How do you expect to talk to your costumers with a vocabulary of a 10-year-old?! Understanding the world. Through reading, you begin to understand the world more. Reading gives you a better understanding of anything and everything. You become a more well-rounded person, and you are able to relate to and talk to a wide variety of people. how can reading be enjoyable? It’s important to pick books from genres you like. If you don’t find any interest in your book within around 20 pages, maybe you should choose a new book. If that one doesn’t seem to work out too well for you either, just keep trying to find a new book until you find one that sparks your interest. Another way to find out about good books is to ask your friends, classmates, librarian, or teacher. There are also websites (like Goodreads, Amazon, and whatshouldireadnext.com) that give good recommendations. here are some books we SUGGEST you try. We both love these BOOKS even though they don’t receive the recognition they deserve! by Alyssa S. & Samara W. One, the rebel in the book, was killed in Malaysia. Two, the brainiac, was killed in London. Three, the man living in a safari, was killed in Kenya. Number Four, known as John Smith, was one of the children selected to go to Earth with eight of the Garde from his planet. They need to keep their enemies from destroying the world. He knows he’s on a life saving mission and that he must stay hidden because he knows that he is being hunted down. After being exposed in Florida, he and his Cèpan, Henri, move quickly to Ohio where Four encounters many new experiences: his first love, his first best friend, first legacies, and his first time being a hero. I recommend this book because it’s a page turner that will keep you engaged until the end. It will also leave you dying to know what happens next. Pittacus Lore, the author, also incorporates himself into the story and uses different characters’ perspectives. This makes the story more interesting and engaging. This is the first book in the Heroes of Olympus series. In this book Leo, Jason, and Piper go on a quest to try to save Hera (a captured God) and keep Gaea (the evil Mother Earth) from waking up and destroying the world. During their quest, the three encounter many problems that get in the way of completing their mission. What they don’t know is that this is just the beginning. This book has an amazing plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page. Rick Riordan is able to incorporate humor into the most intense moments, and it will leave you wondering what will happen next. 3 West Salem Middle School Student Newsletter This book is about two teenagers, Sam and Grace. Grace has spent years watching “her” wolf from the safety of her house. Sam lives two lives. One’s filled with winter snow in the forest and his pack. The other is filled with the heat of the summer and the precious months he has as a human. Grace meets a face with familiar eyes, the eyes of her wolf. Sam must fight the change that is sure to come with winter, or he’ll lose Grace and his life as a human forever. This book is filled with twists and turns as you follow Grace and Sam who face the challenges that come with temperature change and a new relationship. This is about two damaged teens, Trevor and Everly. Trevor recently came out of a coma after a bad car accident. He spends his summer recovering from his TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). On top of that, he has to study for a make up government test he missed. He needs to pass in order to graduate high school. His tutor, a girl named Everly, seems to have it all. But, her family is more damaged than it looks. Needless to say, the summer has some unexpected events and Trevor and Everly will find themselves sharing things with each other that they never share with anyone else. In the process they will grow closer than they thought they would. December 2015/January 2016 This is a heartwrenching story that takes place during Hurricane Katrina on the Lower Ninth Ward, a mostly African-American community. It was hit especially hard during the storm. Armani, a 10-year-old who lives in the community, takes you on a journey through the emotional struggles of losing practically everything you have right before your eyes. She also takes you through her feelings during a life-risking event. Author Julie T. Lamana will grasp your heart and emotions as soon as your eyes land on the first page. Kady Grant's day has gone great. First off, she broke up with her boyfriend. Second, her planet has been invaded by two mega-corporations. Two exes, forced to fight, are thrust into this civil war. With the enemy approaching fast, there is little the surviving crew can do but prepare for combat. What's worse — a deadly virus has broken out and hits the main ship which damaged the Artificial Intelligence. Follow Kady and Ezra into this intergalactic thriller told through a series of hacked documents; it’s the first in a trilogy. Drawing created by Yana G. Inspired by “I’ll pack my bags!” 4 West Salem Middle School Student Newsletter December 2015/January 2016 Encore Classes Students take three classes known as Encore classes at WSMS. WEB leaders help welcome the 6th graders to the middle school. We want them to have a good and fun time in the middle school. Cans For A Cause Since students are now offered juices and beverages in the cafeteria, Student Council members were concerned about recycling the cans. Each Student Council member wrote Mr. Wopat a letter about the benefits of having a can collection area. Mr. Wopat now allows us to have a chain link fence collection area behind the dumpsters by the bike racks. We will get a sign to hang on the fence!! After it is full we will donate the money to a local charity. 8 West Salem Middle School Student Newsletter December 2015/January 2016 Bantam Hockey by Jackson O. Bantam hockey is the fourth and last level in youth hockey until high school. Bantam is a big step up from Pee-Wee hockey for one reason— checking. Checking in hockey is when a player tries to remove an opposing player from the puck using physical contact. Checking can be dangerous because hockey is a very fast sport. For example, some people in the NHL go over forty miles an hour! That’s the speed limit on some roads! This year, I am one of seven 1st year Bantam players. So that means this year, the seven of us will be playing a faster more physical game. Our coach, Ashley, is a great coach. She makes us do about 45 minutes of conditioning every practice. Some conditioning activities are suicides where you have to skate to the blue line and back, red line and back, far blue line and back, goal line and back. Now the real kicker is that we have to do that around the rink and then do the same route around the goal. This conditioning activity takes about 3-5 minutes, and if you don't go 100%, you have to do it over. Bantams have three practices a week. Usually we practice until 9:30, but some nights we get done at 9:15. So, practices are really late and really tiring. We do a very wide variety of drills. One of the best drills is doing the meat grinder. In the meat grinder, everyone on the team lines up around half of the rink about three feet off the boards. Then the person on the end skates all the way down the ice along the boards and lets everyone on the team check him. Let me tell you, it isn't fun when it comes to being checked by Sawyer S. Another drill we do is called tennis balls. It’s pretty straight forward. One of the coaches takes any kind of shot on you, including a slapshot (some slapshots in the NHL have been clocked at 109 mph). But, instead of using a puck, the coach uses a tennis ball. This way it won’t hurt. The object of this drill is to make you not scared of the puck. So, all in all, hopefully with all of this hard work, our hockey team will make it to state. West Salem Boys’ Basketball by David L. The first thing that happens during a practice is stretching. We do multiple stretches, usually mobile or stationary ones. After stretching, we go into layup lines, and as a team try to achieve our goal of 40 lay ups in two minutes. We also work on passing during the layup lines. Then we start to do drills and split up into four groups. There are four main drills we do: defending, shooting lay ups (The Miken Drill), working on our form, and two ball dribbling. When we are finished with the drills we run our plays. After that we usually do free throws and water (one partner shoots two free throws while the other gets a quick drink). Every once in a while we will do other drills or run sprints. Games are made up of four quarters, and each quarter is 7:00 minutes. We have an A and a B team. 8th Grade Coaches: Mr. Running & Mr. Jensen 7th Grade Coaches: Mrs. Jehn & Ms. Beld 8th graders: David L, Josh H, Mathias D, Liam S, Austin S, Brandon L, Keegan K, Wyndsor G, Parker A, Gavin G, Dawson H, Nathan B, Ethan G, Therrick R. 7th graders: Cooper B, Alan C, Evan D, Collin D Noah F, Maxwell G, Adam G, Ethan H, Gavin H, Donovan J, Kaleb K, Caleb K, Charles M, Carson M, Brady N, Brennon O, Josh S, Ian S, Skyler W, Kellen W 9 West Salem Middle School Student Newsletter December 2015/January 2016 West Salem/Bangor Wrestling by Tristan S. & Blake S. When we first begin practice we jog around the circle in the mat room for five minutes. Then we do our stretches. We have 7-10 stretches that we do in the beginning of practice. After we are done with stretches we practice the moves we learned the day before. Then we learn and practice new wrestling moves and skills that would be helpful in a wrestling match. We also scrimmage against our partners. After scrimmaging, we sometimes do a little game, like dodgeball, for example. During every practice we lie down on the mat in a circle. One person is chosen to jump over the person next to him. This continues this around the cirlce until everyone has a turn to jump over everyone in the circle. When we finish this, one person is chosen to say “WHO ARE WE?” and everyone responds, “WB” three times. After we say “WB” three times, we all say, “oooooooooo.” We do these chants to build comradery. On November 30, 2015 our school added a new feature to the school day — Nutrition Break. This new addition gives students a chance to purchase nutritional snacks in order to remain awake and alert throughout the long school day. After a week of getting used to this new break we asked students around the middle school for their thoughts and impressions. It should be noted that everyone surveyed wished to remain anonymous. Almost all of the students thought the nutritional break was a good idea. Most students have had a snack at least once. A particular student saw the nutritional benefits in the break saying, “It’s a great opportunity to get a second chance at breakfast.” Another student observed simply, “I like food.“ Not all of the replies were so enthusiastic. One student claimed, “It is a time to socialize,“ meaning that he thinks the break is being misused as a time to socialize. Overall, the reviews were mostly positive. How long and how well will this new “break” be implemented? Only time will tell. Nutrition Break items are purchased in the cafeteria and eaten in the student’s next class. By Garrett S. and Ethan A. This is the age old question: Are video games bad for you? In this article you will find out. Video games can be good and bad. Short spurts of video games increase hand eye coordination, social skills, and promote puzzle solving and thinking skills. Video games help you think quicker, and analyze faster. Another thing is they can distract people from physical and emotional pain. On the other hand, if you play video games for too long it can become addictive and lead to other problems. Some of these problems include: promoting violence (in certain games) and increasing obesity since many of the games aren't active. In conclusion, video games can be good unless they are used to access. They can be good because they they can improve hand eye coordination, social skills, puzzle solving, thinking skills and speed, and easing pain. But, they can be bad because if you play them too long they can become addictive, promote violence (certain games), and contribute to obesity. Formed in 2001, Canadian musical foursome Marianas Trench has been growing in popularity. The biggest announcement? The release of their newest album, Astoria. The band’s frontman Josh Ramsay shared in a behind-the-scenes video specific details about how the album came to be. “I had been in a depression for the past two years,” Ramsay shares. “I was engaged to the love of my life.We were growing and growing together as a band. Everything was just perfect. But then, things quickly went downhill. The wedding was cancelled, and my mother became very ill… I had writer’s block. I couldn’t write. I couldn’t write… anything. And, in January [2015], I was diagnosed with gallstones and pancreatitis, and so I was hospitalized for several months. But then, while I was in the hospital, suddenly, all of the ideas for the album came to me at once. I started writing and writing and I was almost afraid that I wouldn’t be able to write everything down. It was as if my slump had been broken. I decided to base the whole album off of [19]80’s movie soundtracks, and my favorite [80’s] movie from my childhood was The Goonies, and The Goonies took place in Astoria, and so that’s how I got the name, Astoria. And so, since the whole album was based off the 80’s, I asked myself how I would’ve approached the concept if it was the 80’s. We only used instruments that are from the 80’s or older, and we only used recording equipment that would’ve been available in the 80’s.” Bandmates Mike Ayley, Ian Cassleman, and Matt Webb backed up the idea, and worked together on the album with Josh’s input. “He’s a real artist,” Ayley says. “I’ve never met a man with as muh determination as him.” Matt also shares his thoughts about Josh. “It it wasn’t for Josh, we wouldn’t be where we are today.” Ramsay recorded the entire album in his apartment and toured despite his health issues. Astoria was released October 23 of this year, and the boys are going on the “Hey You Guys!! Tour” this November. Their music is available on iTunes, spotify, and Pandora. 15 West Salem Middle School Student Newsletter December 2015/January 2016 School Guidance Counselor: Mr. Lang By, Samantha K. Would you consider yourself as the “Vice Principal?” Sometimes, but no. Why did you become a guidance counselor? I wanted to become an engineer, but one of my former high school teachers said I should become a guidance counselor. Since you’re the guidance counselor, who do you go to for advice? I talk to myself because I give myself the best advice. When is your birthday? 10-17-68 Where did you grow up? Fond du Lac, Wisconsin What is your favorite color? clear What type of cereal would you be and why? Fruity Pebbles because I’m crazy… Who do you like better, Tom or Jerry? What is the strangest thing you have eaten? A cannibal sandwich (raw meat). What was the last picture you took? A selfie of my Batman mustache. 16 West Salem Middle School Student Newsletter December 2015/January 2016 Water by Kara G. Did you know water is about 60% of your body weight? Water is so important that every system of your body depends on it. Water flushes out bad toxins in your major organs and it also keeps your bowels functioning efficiently. Water is so important that you would only survive about three days without it. Also, keep in mind that on some days you might have to drink more water than on others. For example, when you are sick, when you are going to be doing intense exercises, and when it is a hot/humid day. In conclusion, water is a VERY crucial necessity to all forms of life. Survey Question: We asked the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders this question: On an average school day (from when you wake up until you go to bed) how much water do you drink? Use this bottle (see picture) as a reference.
