Niels H. Nielsen Barbara Hupfer Dawn McEvoy Andrea Nielsen WORSHIP SCHEDULE SUNDAY SCHOOL (Pre-K – Grade 12)…… REGULAR WORSHIP SERVICE…………........ COFFEE FELLOWSHIP…………………………. REGULAR WORSHIP SERVICE…………........ (Holy Communion: 1st & 3rd Sundays) 9:00 AM 9:00 AM 10:00 AM 10:30 AM Pastor’s Page Stories of Faith “Stories of hope” has been a common theme in the last several months. It was used at our 2014 Synod Assembly, our Vacation Bible Camp, Counselor in Training program, our High Adventure trip as well as a number of sermons, Bible Studies and discussion groups. The Bible speaks to us about Faith and Hope in many places. Here is one. Faith in Action Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see… By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. ~ Hebrew 11: 1 & 3 Faith and hope are interwoven in a partnership that provides the groundwork for living in a relationship with Jesus. Faith and hope are important tools for us to have as we go through each day. Hope becomes especially important when we face difficult trials. In my time as pastor of this congregation, we have been through some difficult times. For example, recently we have been going through a time of some financial turbulent waters. It is not terrible, but it makes the leadership of the congregation focus on questions like “are we doing something wrong” or “is there is some special thing we need to do to even-out our offerings and expenses.” At the same time we continue to have dreams such as constructing an outdoor pavilion to increase our ability to do ministry. I was helped through this time by a story of hope that comes right out of our own ministry. Many years ago, we were just beginning to grow our Sunday school. We were starting to get more and more children. We got to a point where one of the teachers said to me “Pastor, where are we going to get more teachers if these children continue to come?” I raced through my brain and came up with this simple word of hope for her and for me. “The Lord will provide.” She looked at me with some questioning thought on her mind and then said, “Ok, if that’s the way you want to go, we will see.” The next week, after asking in church, we got 4 new teachers. The story of hope here is that the Lord will provide. A pastoral friend of mine went to a church where they had a large endowment fund. The pastor wanted to do some community work, open the church up to some new programs and generally expand their ministry. The leadership said those are all good ideas but we do not have the resources. He looked at them and said, “what about the endowment money?” Their reply was, “Oh pastor, we are saving that for a rainy day!” The pastor replied with a question, “Do you think that the Lord would not provide for a rainy day if it comes?” After some discussion, they voted to spend some endowment money on new programs, since they were certain that the Lord would provide for a rainy day. The leadership came to understand that they could hope in things unseen, namely a God who promises to provide for us abundantly. While we may not see God we live by faith and create stories of hope by stepping out into life, knowing in our hearts that God is with us. We should be assured that God is with us in the rough seas and calm harbors. As we grow in our faith and create our own stories of hope we are all the more ready to share with others our stories and help them find their faith. Living by Faith, Pastor Niel Chaplains in the Parks ~ Pennsylvania Council of Churches A Non-Denominational Worship Service at the Promised Land Amphitheater will be held every Saturday evening at 5:00 PM. Our own Robert Laughlin is leading in worship, all are invited to attend and participate. Pantry Ponderings What we see will last only a short time, but what we cannot see will last forever. – 2 Corinthians 4:18 Some of you have shouldered burdens that few of us could ever carry. You bid farewell to life-long partners. You have been robbed of life-long dreams. You have been given bodies that can’t sustain your spirit. You have bills that outnumber the paychecks and challenges that outweigh the strength. And you are tired. The desire to pull over to the side of the road and get out entices you. You want to go on but some days the road seems so long…. God never said that the journey would be easy but he did say that the arrival would be worthwhile.” ~ From Max Lucado – In the Eye of the Storm I read this one morning after talking with some of our clients. The burdens they have and the stories they are willing to share make my problems seem so small. There are many times that you just want to give up and throw in the towel. There are times when it feels like it is not worth the battle. There was a woman who came to the pantry and she told me of her struggles. She tries to keep things upbeat around her home in spite of her husband being unable to find work, not being able to afford to put food on the table for her children. She has medical issues of her own but tries to stay positive for her family. Sometimes it gets overwhelming and she just sat with me and cried. Sometimes it takes a good cry to pick yourself up and get back on the road. I pray that she gets the medical attention that she so desperately needs so that she can continue to be a positive force in lives of her family and others. I pray also for everyone that has felt like giving up because the burdens they are carrying seem so overwhelming. I pray that God will guide them and let them know that though the journey may be difficult now, He makes it all worth it in the end.
