Today`s Thought... - Bellevue Church of Christ
SUNDAY, MAY 11, 2014 MVP Moment Today’s Thought... “ I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death...” Philippians 3:10 ELDERS: BOBBY FERRELL MERLE GRIZZELL FRANK HARRELL JIM NEELLEY KEN PETTY RON WHITE NELSON WHITFIELD FRED WOLFE BRUCE ZUPA If you’re into NBA basketball, you probably saw at least a portion of Kevin Durant’s MVP acceptance speech. It was a remarkable display of gratitude. Much of the time talking through tears, he thanked his teammates by name and told personal stories about how each one had impacted his life. He thanked his coaches by name, describing the closeness of their bond. Then, he came to his mother, Wanda, calling her the “real MVP.” He went on in some detail about their early struggles: “One of the best memories I had was when we moved into our first apartment. No bed, no furniture, and we just all sat in a room and just hugged each other. We thought we’d made it.” It was a touching display of gratitude. All were watching and listening—intently. One of them was especially touched and honored: The mother of the MVP. He called her the real MVP, but I’ll say this, a son who honors his mother is of great value. Even if it isn’t broadcast on ESPN, the son or daughter who shows appreciation for his mother is more valuable than any trophy can convey. Scripture teaches in both Testaments that we are to honor our parents (Ex. 20:12; Mark 7:10). It’s the right thing to do. Those who brought us into the world by the grace of God, changed our diapers, fed us, burped us, stayed up with us at all hours of the night, went with us through all kinds of challenges—those people (our parents) deserve some honor. Our parents love us with a love that is not fully appreciated until we have children of our own. Then, suddenly we get it. Each step of the way as we walk with our own children through life, we get it. We get how much our parents loved us and sacrificed for us. One of my favorite passages on honoring parents is in John’s depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus. Only John records it because only John (of the Twelve) stayed with Jesus to the point of the cross, and only John was impacted by it in a personal way. Listen to it again: MINISTERS: TOM RILEY T OM@Bellevue-chur c h . c o m DANIEL PALK d a niel@Bellevue-chur c h . c o m BLAKE MCCASKILL b l ake@Bellevue-chur c h . c o m Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home ( John 19:25-27). Here hangs Jesus taking the sins of the world upon him. In the agony of the event, he thought of others—one of them was his mother. In one of his dying breaths, he took care of Mary. He entrusted her to his loyal friend and disciple John. All eternity will remember the moment Jesus honored his mother: “Take care of my mother, John. She’s your mother now.” Find a way to honor your mother. God will bless you for it. —Tom Riley Welcome Guests! We’re delighted that you’ve joined us today. CHILDREN’S CORNER David was a young shepherd. He never used weapons of war, and he wasn’t a trained soldier! What chance did he have against the mightiest warrior in the Philistine army? However, when someone is willing to trust God for strength, your size, age and strength don’t matter. Some may try to discourage you from doing what God wants you to do because they thing you are too young. But, as we see from David’s life, God uses whatever we have and makes up the difference. Trust God, and He will help you conquer the giants! “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12 **3rd grade communion cup pick up today** [email protected] “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” - 2 Cor. 3:18 Home Norm Basham Barbara Franz, friend of Sara Hamblen Gloria Sparkman, mother of Ron Helen Stratton Hospital Nick Berens, Vanderbilt, Metro Police officer, friend Alex Hyatt, request prayers Richard Keller, Duke Medical Ctr, awating lung transplant, friend Riley Holliday Rehab & Assisted Care Betty Anderson, West Meade, 2085 Elise Brown, Green Hills Health & Rehab, 309-B, hospice, visits welcome Charlie Cooper, Life Care Center of Hickory Woods, friend of Jane Young Jane Mayo, Chattanooga Rehab, mother of Roberta Bass, request prayers Helen Richardson, West Meade, 2058 Ned Solomon, Meadows, A36 New Prayer Requests Sammie Baker Mindy Balch Lori Corley, daughter-in-law of Elmer Dunn, pray for Greg, Lori & family, www.caringbridge.org enter Lori Corley Donald Daughrity, brother of Mary Fant Nancy Davis Wayne Elrod Frank Farley Rick Forehand, son of Charles & Brenda Roy Foster Hardy Hendon Clyde & Audrey Johnson Ron Major, friend Jack & Faye Hollands Jack Marshall Announcements: Sympathy We express our sympathy to Dot McNeil and her family in the death of her sister, Evelyn Ashley on Sunday, May 4, 2014.
