February 2016 Newsletter
Seaside View http://www.pdclipart.org/albums/Plants__Flowers/basket_pretty_flowers.png February 2016 Newsletter for the Seaside Quilters Guild Pacific Beach, CA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I may be a little early, but I know Spring is around the corner and that means cleaning (for some of us). It is time for getting into that stack of UFOs in the closet and brightening up the lives of those who receive our creations of comfort and joy. With as little as twenty minutes a day (usually all I have after getting home from work), there could be a wonderful quilt top completed within a few sessions. There is inspiration in magazines, websites, books, and even in fabric. Just a block or two will soon multiply into the needed numbers for a full quilt top. The bigger the block, the fewer the number required for a top! Easy blocks typically have straight lines, but more interest is created by including triangles. A challenge comes to mind to get creative and learn a technique or to actually sew up a demonstrated technique seen repeatedly. So what if the block ends up an orphan – the attempt was made and could become a favorite or a focal point of an orphan quilt or sampler top. As one of our former speakers showed us, even if they don’t match, those little orphans could become a quilt top by using a bold unifying color as size unifying sashing. Or join them into a placemat set, table runner, or mug rug – something perfect for the auction later this year! When cleaning out the space, consider all those tools or those pieces of fabric screaming “What was I thinking?” and consider including them in a basket as long as they are still in great condition. I won a terrific basket filled with silks. Road to California will be history, I was eager to find a couple of items and get some new ideas from the quilts presented. By February (definitely by March!), Christmas should be packed up and my focus will turn to several projects needing completion, including the ones hot off the LAQ now that hubby is into the groove of this aspect of quilting! (He also had some specific items on his search list while attending “Road”.) There are so many offerings and wonderful opportunities that fill our lives with meaning and inspiration whether it is in quilting or in other areas. I am continually intrigued by the new fabrics, patterns, and the techniques I see and can learn. There are so many good websites, YouTube videos, retailers, and tutorials available. I frequently take notes (that I can’t understand later), and return to the source for additional information and refreshing. I trust we will all be inspired and find new patterns or color combinations with the presentations from our speaker. Remember to check out the Facebook website for postings as well. See you at the general meeting! Stitchingly, Lois ccsa COMFORT AND JOY The staff and volunteers at CCSA extend their thanks to all of you for the various donations. We delivered over 300 items collected over the holidays. They were especially thrilled with the socks and being able to restock the canned pantry after the holiday depletion. With all the rain, they have been running low on soups and ramen items as well. Donations will be collected at the meeting – look for a table near the back lot (south) exit door! Thanks again, Lois Nothing new to report. I guess our joy is that everyone is doing well! Please contact me if you want your good news or your sad news to go in the newsletter. ~~ Rebecca Johnson COMMUNITY SERVICE Seasiders are generous Project Linus Yarn For Ernie This is a reminder that Ernie can always use more yarn. It’s better if it is not wool so it’s washable. He makes blankets out of donated yarn and gives them to Project Linus. You can give me any yarn you are willing to part with. Small balls are fine, they make nice stripes. Thank you in advance. ~~Ruth Simons Kennel Comforters Thanks to everyone who turned in finished quilts at the January Guild meeting. The basket of blankets to be quilted was empty after our meeting. Yahoo!!! Can’t wait to see the finished products. We will be able to donate 15 quilts this month as soon as we get labels on. Upcoming dates for Linus workshops are Monday February 1 and Tuesday February 16 Thanks to everyone who works on Linus throughout the year. ~~Linda Duggan I’ll happily accept your batting scraps to make dog and kitty beds for animals in county shelters. All materials they use must be washable, so they can be reused when animals find their forever home. Thank you for your continued support! ~~ Audrey Noonan February Meeting: Tuesday, February 2, 6:30 p.m. Social; 7:00 p.m. meeting. ***************************************************************** HOW TO BRING A GUEST All members are encouraged to invite guests to our guild meetings. San Diego, CA 92109 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SEASIDE CHALLENGE PARTICIPATION A Hundred Years Ago Today Nominations will be coming soon! Let the board know if you are interested in a particular position. The guild is only as good as YOUR inputs. We will be tapping shoulders, so please take the taps seriously! The theme for this year’s Challenge Quilt is “100 Years Ago.” Your challenge is to make a quilt or a block based on something from 1916. It may be based on 1916 quilt designs or events or people or things that started in 1916. It can be simple or complex. It can be any size or shape. BLOCK OF THE MONTH If you are looking for ideas, you might check out one of the first quilting books, "Quilts; Their Story and How to Make Them,” by Marie D. Webster, which was published in 1916. You can read the book online at: http://www.gutenberg.org/zipcat2.php/24682/24682h/24682-h.htm. The blocks in January were won by Barbara Perez. Quite a few people forgot either to make their block or bring it with understandably as it was to be made over the holiday season … too much sherry drunk to even remember where you put the block!! If you can get the BOM made please bring it to the February meeting and give it to Barbara. The new BOM designed by Marny is due in February and will make a lovely quilt. Please write your name on the paper provided and put it in the tin to make sure you have a chance of winning. ~~Gillian and the BOM girls. The book contains several illustrations, including quilts made by Marie D. Webster. Or, perhaps, you might be inspired by popular colors for 1916. Or by one of the popular songs of 1916 -- "Pretty Baby," which you can listen to on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMpOE_wMADI For more ideas, you can check out Seaside Quilters community facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/Seaside-Quilters110905575667120/, where I will posting images and ideas from 1916 in the coming months. The quilts or blocks will be due at the June 2016 meeting when they will be shared. I hope many of you choose to participate and have fun with this project. ~~ Patt Seitas 4 OPPORTUNITY OF THE MONTH CHIT CHAT If you met up with your 'new friend' through chit chat and want to share the experience please do at the February meeting. ~~Gillian Hello Seaside Quilters!
