After three years, New York State Council on the Arts Mandates Full Time Director for Funding

This will be my last “Fran’s Forum”
article as Executive Director of
Yates County Arts Center. As of
April 1st I will be retiring from this
part-time position at the arts center but hope to remain an active
member and volunteer with the
organization. You may recall that at the last annual
meeting I announced that YCAC needed to hire a
full-time executive director. This is required in order
to maintain our NYSCA recognition and financial
support. NYSCA allows an organization three years
with a part time director followed by a board commitment to the long term success of the organization by the hiring of a full time executive to lead the
organization. The posting for this position is included in this issue of Perspectives and will be in
appropriate internet job banks and other media.
It has been my extreme pleasure to have been on a
thrilling journey with Yates County Arts Center
since 1999, first as a gallery volunteer and since
2007 as your Executive Director. These have been
exciting years of growth for the organization. Some
of our accomplishments during this decade include:
•
Instead of one or two workshops per year
for adults, we now have year round
programming of workshops for the very young
through the very old. Each season we offer a
whole new array of art opportunities.
•· We also offer art instruction for
underserved children through a variety of grant
opportunities we have explored. For the past
three years or so we have provided art
instruction for students at St. Michael’s School
and for the homeschooled school-aged
community.
•·
Another recent grant enabled YCAC to
provide painting and art & memoir writing
instruction for home-bound seniors.
•· Each November we provide a live
professional theater experience for elementary
students at Penn Yan Elementary, Dundee
Elementary, and St. Michael’s. The Hampstead
State Co. comes to town and gives
performances at each of the three schools of a
classic literary work.
•· We have had summer Musical Theater
Workshops for the youth of the community
which culminated in a performance.
•· Last year our Celebrate Art-Family Fun Day
provided art activities and entertainment free of
charge to families in the community and visitors
to the area
•· Our renovated Gallery space provides six to
eight excellent exhibits annually featuring local,
national and international artists specializing in
a variety of media and techniques.
•· All three Yates County middle and high
schools exhibit their artwork each spring.
Students from the 29th Congressional District
enter an Art Competition each year and we
host an exhibit of their work.
•· The walls of the County Office Building are
adorned with art work by local artists thanks to
the partnership between YCAC and members
of the Legislature. The Village Office rooftop
features a metal work by a local sculpture artist
obtained through another YCAC Call for Artists.
•· The Arts Center provides opportunities for
local and regional artists to exhibit and sell their
work
•· The founding of the Finger Lakes Chamber

I am grateful for all the support I
have received throughout this decade from the many dedicated volunteers, instructors, members, businesses, grantors, schools and government officials. You have enabled
Yates County Arts Center to carry
out its mission to “enrich the lives of
residents, artists, and visitors of
Yates County through participation
and education in the arts.
There are three individuals who
have been extremely influential and
have walked with me along this journey during this past decade. First, I
would like to express my thanks to
the late Norma Pealer for being the
first to introduce me to Yates County
Arts Center by recruiting me as a
gallery volunteer. We owe Norma
much gratitude for helping to keep
the arts alive in the community during a difficult era in the ‘90’s.
Message from the President
Yates County Arts Center was
founded in 1975 by a group of interested people that wanted to support
artists of any discipline in the development of new creative work. It is
incredible to conceive of the 35
years, the leadership and the volunteers who have create a place for
artists and the community to come
together so well.
Yates County Arts Center is extremely grateful to Fran Bliek for her
dedicated service in a critical position at a critical time. Her leadership
and vision were indispensable to our
organization as it confronted a wave

Second, I would like to thank Bonnie Barney, whose vision and
dedicated service have been instrumental in the growth of YCAC.
She is the arts center’s biggest
cheerleader and has brought
many new volunteers into the organization. I treasure her friendship and advice throughout the
years.
Thirdly, I would like to thank Peter
Loughnane who has been there
for YCAC since the 90’s providing
technical expertise and service. I
thank him for his patience and assistance even while on a job in the
state of Washington.
There are so many who have volunteered their time, talent, and
treasure to make Yates County
Arts Center what it is today. Thank
you! Your contributions and support have been greatly appreciated. The arts are alive and well in
Yates County and YCAC is a vital
part of that wellness and will continue to positively impact the lives
of all residents, artists, and visitors. I know you will welcome the
new director and continue to support YCAC and its mission. Fare-

Lynette Blake says, “My current work is an effort to integrate three facets which jointly help
us to experience this sense of the infinite: first,
that which we call real, the world experienced
through our senses, captured by the depiction
of objects; second, what is commonly included
in the concept of intellectual, expressed by the
use of geometric shapes and patterns; and finally, connecting and embracing the first two,
the cosmic, expressing that which we can intuit
as though things were unbounded by space

Lynette is a native Rochesterian. In addition to
her painting, Lynette is a serious amateur

The pictures
that are on
show are my photographic interpretations of
Sam Castner’s sculptures. The first time that
I saw his work I knew immediately that it could
be a fantastic opportunity for visual creations
which would translate the feeling of curve and
movement that emanates from it.”
Native to France, Crozet retired to Keuka
Park after a 30 year career with Xerox. He
finds digital photography has opened new
creative doors. When not experimenting with
pictures, he enjoys cooking.
Sam Castner, sculptor, designer, fabricator, builder; his
medium of choice is reclaimed scrap and recycled metals,
finding inspiration from nuts, bolts and remnant plumbing
fittings found in landfills or scrap heaps. At his Ironvine Studio, he has worked on commissions for Wendell Castle and
Albert Paley. His pieces can be found in local homes, wineries and the Geneva home built for the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Sam returned to his native Keuka to raise his family after
teaching at the University of California at Davis.

American independence will be celebrated
July 3rd with an all-American picnic dinner
and concert at the Glenn H. Curtis Museum
in Hammondsport, in the shadow of “The
America”, Curtiss’ 1914 flying boat.
A string quartet will perform along with a
special guest musician, playing THE SAW,
the renown Natalia Paruz. She is shown
here with Zubin Mehta, after a performance
with the Israel Philharmonic. Garisson Keillor, of Prairie Home Companion, calls her

Executive Director Search
Yates County Arts Center is seeking an exceptional leader to shape the next phase of our rich
history. The Executive Director will provide inspiring and strategic leadership to the organization,
while overseeing the day-to-day operations in a
way that ensures continued mission delivery and
organizational effectiveness.
The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with
strong organizational, strategic, operational, fundraising, communication and staff management
skills. This individual must possess a true passion
for the mission and programs of the Arts Center.
We will search for someone who has a deep appreciation for, and understanding of, the artistic
process and working with artists.
Other qualifications and characteristics include:
Proven leadership skills and business management experience.
- A track record of successful resource development.
-Experience identifying and securing partnerships
to further Yates County Art’s Center strategy.
- Dynamic and charismatic style that inspires internal and external stakeholders and that motivates
increased interest and investment in the Center.
- Experience in forging new and existing, relationships with multiple constituents
- Exceptional written and oral communication - as
well as listening skills.
- Strong knowledge of budgeting, internal controls
and finance.
- A commitment to professional excellence and
integrity.

month of March to effect a smooth transition from

Beginning February 1 YCAC workshops are being held at the Penn Yan Presbyterian
Church at the corner of Main and Clinton Streets in the "Robert's Room". From the

At The Gallery
The Penn Yan Art Guild will meet at the Gallery at
7:30pm for the March and April meetings.

Currently working on a series of figurative drawings, exploring communications, Corti’s art
pushes the viewer to look beyond the obvious
and add their history to the visual story.
For the March 17th meeting, bring a painting with
considerable white or mostly green for some discussion and critiquing.
The meeting on April 21st will feature a demonstration of whimsical painting by Kit Corti from
Naples. "Using treehouses as a metaphor, I will
demonstrate innovative perspective techniques,"
said Corti. Kit brings forth an exuberance of art
Red Jacket Writers’ Group
We welcome writers every month except July
and August. We meet the third Monday of each
month from 7-9 PM at The Gallery. Dues are
$1 per month for those attending. We share
our joys and woes, successes and rejections,
and read from our current writing projects.

meet at 7:00 P.M. April 15th at the Gallery. The
program will be a display and critique of any
photographs on display in the Gallery. This is
our annual meeting. Dues are due, $5.00 for a

The March 18th meeting's
program will be a display and critique of any
photographs you have taken of snow. These
may be digital or film; prints, CDs or slides.
