Saginaw Valley State University’s rich history began in the year 1963 when
Saginaw Valley College was founded. A few years later, the university’s first
official building, Wickes Hall, was built, a milestone that officially put the
school on the map. Another few short years after that, the university’s name
was changed to Saginaw Valley State College in 1974 and in 1987 the final name Saginaw Valley State University was established. Since its founding, SVSU has built ten academic buildings and six different residential facilities that range from the First Year Suites and three living centers to the
University Village and Pine Grove which serve as upperclassmen housing.
Over 2,700 of SVSU’s 9,829 students opt to live on campus due to its beauty, the quality of the facilities and the proximity to all on campus happenings.
Saginaw Valley State University is located in University Center, Michigan between
the cities of Bay City, Saginaw and Midland. It is accessible via M-84 and is just
minutes away from I-75 in either direction. The university serves as a cultural and
intellectual hot-spot for the region as many prominent and diverse on campus
events are made available to students as well as the general public. 2013 marked
Saginaw Valley’s 50 year anniversary, a huge milestone for Michigan’s youngest
public university. With such amazing growth in just 52 years as an institution of
higher learning, there is no limit to what SVSU can and will accomplish in the future.
Additionally, recognized alumni include Patrick McInnis, the CEO of Fathead,
Pamela Forbus, Vice President of Strategic Insights at Frito-Lay, and Jeff Janis, NFL Player. The Higher Learning Commission even termed SVSU “The
Midwest’s best secret.” SVSU truly is something more, something better.
The Saginaw Valley State University Residence Housing Association is the
governing body for the residential communities on campus, constructed
similarly to other schools within the Great Lakes Region. Our Executive
Board consists of six unique positions, advised by two outstanding advisors. We have a total of six different residential communities on campus. Our RHA is the second largest student organization on campus, but the largest residentially run organization.
Over the past few years SVSU’s RHA has grown tremendously with an abundance of student leaders striving to make an impact
on residential life and in the campus community. Additionally, we host
regular programs every month, take delegations to conferences at the
state level (MORHA), the regional level (GLACURH), and national level
(NACURH). SVSU has a stellar reputation winning bids, roll calls, and even
having Top Ten Programs presented at conferences. We hosted the GLACURH
No Frills 2014 Business Meeting and GLACURH 2007 successfully. Currently, SVSU hosts
four members on the state board (MORHA) who are also dedicated General Assembly members. In addition, SVSU hosted Joseph Koehn and Alexandra Straley who served on both
the regional and national board of directors. Joseph served as the GLACURH AD of NRHH
(2012-2013) and the NACURH Associate for NRHH (2013-2014). Alexandra served as the
GLACURH Director (2010-2011) and the NACURH National Executive (2011-2012). Furthermore, SVSU student Haylie Chamarro was selected as GLACURH’s 2014 Student of the Year,
along with RHA Advisor Michele Gunkelman receiving the 2014 Hallenbeck Service Award.
SVSU’s Olivia A. Lake Chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary is quickly flourishing and developing. The Olivia A. Lake Chapter received the regional honor of Outstanding Chapter of the Year at GLACURH 2014. Dedication and commitment
on both the regional and national levels, along with plans to further emphasize recognition and service on campus qualified the chapter for the award.
The chapter is still expanding, reaching out to the surrounding and residential communities, and seeking innovative ideas to implement.
In today’s world, it is easy for busy, overwhelmed students to get caught up
in the trivial details of life. Concerned about materialistic things and social media, we often forget to place emphasis on where we’ve come from and what
really matters.
That’s why GLACURH 2015 is Bringing Back Leadership.
The SVSU bid team selected 90’s Throwback: Bringing Back Leadership to take conference attendees back to where it all began. As the majority of the anticipated delegates, NCCs and NRHH CCs were born in this
decade, we are going back to the beginning. Bringing back fond childhood memories, capturing the creative energy of youth and reigniting the spark of leadership.
The theme will incorporate various forms of entertainment and cultural icons present throughout the 90’s, intertwined with leadership initiatives. To earn additional slime (spirit) points leading up to conference, delegations will be able to answer ‘90s Trivia on social media. Entertainment options incorporate the theme,
offering the chance to make dream catchers or play a game of giant twister.
Additionally, the bubbly atmosphere fostered by the theme will serve to emphasize
strengthening regional ties and pursuing leadership. In unifying the region, 90’s Throwbacks of reminiscing will establish unbreakable bonds, based on those embarrassing,
awkward, and hilarious memories. Furthermore, the setting will spark creative and innovative ideas for programs which students can implement at their host institutions.
Having the chance to host hundreds of inspired and motivated students at one
place for an entire weekend is an opportunity we don’t want to miss out on. Saginaw Valley is excited to incorporate the theme 90’s Throwback: Bringing Back Leadership to a regional conference to remind each student of their childhood and how
these memories have made a lasting impression on the people they are today.

Hometown: Marine City, MI
Year: Third
Becca is a third year student majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry,
with plans to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Currently, Becca serves
as the NRHH CC and as the RHA Executive Vice President. She enjoys drinking coffee and listening to country music. Rebecca has also been showing llama for 12 years, you could say she has this conference down no “prob-llama”.

Tiffany is a second year elementary special education major passionate about
helping others. She presently serves as the NCC and is an active member
of the Living Leadership Program. Tiffany loves all things turtles, eating and
spending time with her family and friends. She is incredibly enthusiastic about
the opportunity to showcase SVSU and work with talented student leaders!

Katie is a second year student here at SVSU from Oxford, Michigan. She has attended the
MORHA conferences for the past two years and loves the whole conference experience. She
loves getting to connect with other student leaders from universities and learning about programs to bring back to SVSU. She loves to spend time with her friends and family especially
up north out on the boat during the summer. She currently serves as the Vice President of
Programming for RHA and is a transition member into the Olivia A. Lake chapter of NRHH.

Ashley is a first year student here at SVSU from Oxford, Michigan. She attended
her first conference last fall and instantly fell in love with the whole idea. Her favorite part of the conference was the diverse programs put on by other universities.
She is passionate about reading, writing and painting. Ashley currently serves as
president of her hall council and cannot wait for the many new adventures to come!

Pedro is a marketing major with graphic design and communications minors who always
has a smile on his face. Although he is involved in many organizations around campus,
Pedro is passionate about residential life and everything it does for the students. He has
attended two past conferences and he enojyed the atmosphere in each one which makes
him eager to be a part of the dream team and create memories for so many other people.
He loves social media (follow him on twitter: @realpedromarin) and if you ever see him with
free time, he’s probably watching the TV Show Friends, so know that he’ll “be there for you”.

Mark Maliskey is an accounting major and entrepreneurship minorat SVSU. He loves being involved on campus and having a good time.

Charlie enjoys a multitude of interests and hobbies but the outdoors
and sports are his passions.
He participates in student government
and is an orientation leader on campus. As a freshman at SVSU, Charlie's goals include expanding his leadership and creating great memories!

Hailing from Pinconning, Michigan, Zachary Nine is a freshman majoring in Biology. At Saginaw Valley, Zack is serving on his community council and attended the MORHA 2015 conference to represent his university. He is an orientation
leader, was a member of the Cardinal Marching Band, and volunteers to play in
the pep band. “SVSU hosting GLACURH 2015 would show that we might not be
the biggest school in the state but we have the most heart and school spirit around.”

Andrew Jarmon is a second year accounting major, communication minor from Macomb, Michigan. He currently serves as Vice President of Records of Saginaw Valley State’s Residence Housing Association. He is also a transition member of his school’s National Residence Hall Honorary,
and will be a Resident Assistant for 2015-2016. He has been to two MORHA’s and one NACURH. A
fun fact about Andrew is that he enjoys listening to music such as country and alternative rock. A major goal for him at GLACURH 2015 is to ensure a calm and enjoyable atmosphere throughout each
program, along with growing as an individual. He is excited to get started and everything under way!

Katie Cumming is so excited to be a part of the 2015 GLACURH conference! Katie has just recently become involved in RHA and is so glad she
did. She just completed an internship with The Walt Disney World Company and plans to start her career there upon graduation. She is hoping that the leadership skills she obtains through being a part of the conference will help her in her future as she fulfills her dreams at Disney!

Shayla has been involved in a variety of leadership positions at SVSU.
She serves as a General Assembly member of RHA, and is the Purchaser for her community council. She is serving as one of the chairs
for Mass Gathering and Entertainment, and is very excited to see all
the smiling faces at GLACURH! Her passion is running marathons.

Dan has been involved in various leadership capacities at SVSU. He served as the
President of his community council his freshman year, as well as RHA President
his sophomore year. Currently, he is a General Assembly member of RHA, and a
transition member of NRHH. He is serving as one of the chairs for Mass Gathering
and Entertainment, and is most excited to entertain all of the leaders of GLACURH.
Also, his favorite movie is the Notebook, and he enjoys long walks on the beach.

Alissa likes small puppies and long walks on the beach. When she’s not saving the world
from utter destruction, she can be found behind the lens of a camera or napping. When
Alissa grows up she wants to be an athletic trainer then a physical therapist. She has a
long way to go because she’s a freshman, but she is excited to be working on her first
conference with this wonderful group of leaders. Alissa is involved in her building’s community council and a general assembly member in Residence Housing Association. She
is interested in GLACURH to become more involved on campus and meet new people.

Haley Sedlar is a Business Management Major and the Chair for Philanthropy. She
has a deep passion for the Great Lakes that started at the age of two. Ever since
then all of her summers are spent on or around water. She loves boating, jet skiing,
tubing, waterskiing, and wakeboarding. Luckily for her, all of her friends love the water too, which happens to be their favorite place to hangout. Haley is also passionate about helping others, experiencing every opportunity she can, and her family.

Mackenzie is a first year history major/spanish minor at SVSU. Upon graduating, she
plans on remaining at SVSU to receive her Masters of Arts-Administrative Science degree and hopefully work in student affairs at a university one day. She is very involved in
RHA and her hall council and is a member of Phi Sigma Sigma. Ever since starting college
this year, Mackenzie has become extremely passionate about leadership and is looking
forward to continuing to grow as a leader and a person through this amazing experience.

Michele is the Director of Residential Life at SVSU, where she graduated with a degree in
Spanish and English only to quickly move on to graduate school at Oklahoma State University to earn her master’s degree in Counseling and Student Personnel. It has been a quiet dream for her to be able to advise a group of motivated students in hosting a regional conference. RHA is where Michele got her start as a student and has devoted her
energies as a professional - developing student leaders and supporting them in their quest!
She is also a quote-aholic who loves to share inspiration and recognize accomplishments.

We are completely “thrown-back” by our community and the amount of options we have for
supporting GLACURH 2015 at SVSU. We have compiled a list of businesses in the Saginaw, Michigan area as well as a list of on-campus organizations that we hope to reach out to
for sponsorships and donations. SVSU Hosted No Frills 2014 and received a lot of support
from the local businesses and the many on-campus organizations. We anticipate the same
support for GLACURH 2015 at SVSU.
We have reached out to many of the different offices on campus and have gotten support
from all of the ones we have reached out to. The Student Affairs team is in full support of
GLACURH 2015 being hosted at SVSU. We anticipate support from Student Affairs through
volunteers and monetary donations.
The Baby Got Bank committee is a great group of dedicated individuals. The team is fully
committed to spending the time to reach out to all of the businesses and organizations necessary to help get the cost of the conference as low as possible. Everyone on the team has
already agreed to take time out of their summer plans to reach out to even more businesses
than what is on our list.

Hello,
The weekend of November 20, 21 and 22 of 2015 Saginaw Valley State University is hosting a conference for the Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls. There will be representation
from colleges and universities from all over the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Ontario, Illinois, and Indiana,
coming to Saginaw Valley. These schools will be coming to the area to network, develop leadership skills, and
vote on changes to their regional policies and to recognize other schools in the region. We are anticipating
around 550 people in attendance. Although this is a business meeting, the attendees will have time to explore
the area on Friday, November 20, 2015 and on Sunday, November 22, 2015.
In order to provide a great experience for the attendees we are asking for your help. We are currently
working on raising funds to offset the total cost of the conference. Although the attendees do pay to attend
the conference, we are looking to lower the cost in any way possible. In return of any support that your business can provide, we will be providing advertisement in showing off your company’s logo throughout the
weekend. Our staff will be wearing T-Shirts that we will put your logo on. In addition, there will be multiple
conference materials that the attendees will receive that we can put your logo and company name in. Any
donations you are able to provide will help us welcome them to Saginaw with open arms.

GLACURH conferences that this was the most efficient method.
Registration will be open September 21st and close on October 23rd at 11:59pm EST. The
current delegation cap is set at 9 student delegates and up to 2 advisors. More information is

Check In
After arriving in Saginaw, check in will take place at the Residence Inn Hotel and will be from
2:00pm to 7:00pm. Late check-in will be available as necessary.

Are you driving? Saginaw Valley State University is centrally located within the GLACURH region and is situated nicely on the I-75 corridor. The hotels are approximately 5 miles from campus, situated between the
university and the highway. Parking will be at the designated hotels and passes will be issued for on campus
parking.
Are you flying? Saginaw Valley State University is conveniently located less than 10 miles from MBS international airport, in Freeland, MI. This is the ideal location for those planning on flying but accommodation can be
made to be picked up at Flint’s Bishop Airport and Detroit Metro Airport as well. We will be running university
vans and/or mini-vans to the airports to pick up conference guests. SVSU will also be providing limited shuttle
services for those guests without vehicles to and from the hotel daily.
Parking for the weekend of the conference will be free and available in close proximity to all on-campus events
respectively. Free/visitor parking will be highlighted on the conference map, but we understand maps can get
confusing. To avoid any potential conflicts we will be issuing conference parking passes in the event someone
strays into a residential or faculty lot, to assist our campus’ parking services. Any metered or handicapped
parking spaces will be subject to ticketing, so be weary. In the event of a question our parking services can
be reached at 989-964-4140.
Saginaw Valley State University is blessed to have its very own campus Police force. They run regular patrols 24-hours a day across campus and can be reached for non-emergencies at 989-964-4141. SVSU also
has strategically placed Blue-light emergency alert kiosks across campus in the event of an emergency. The
hotel will also be staffed 24-hours a day, and conference staff will be on hand to answer any questions that
may arise.

This conference room designed for business
is in the heart of our campus. It has a conference table that sits up to twenty people.
Also equipped with technology and a projection screen this room will be ideal for the RBD
conducting business the day before the GLACURH conference.
Ott Auditorium
The Ott Auditorium is a state-of-the-art auditorium that accommodates 250 guests and
offers an attractive mezzanine adjacent to the
auditorium. This venue is located within Gilbertson Hall of SVSU. Technology needed for business will be
available as well as outlets around the whole room for NCCs and advisors.
Science East Classrooms
Classrooms conveniently located on the first and second floor of the same hallway in Science East will make
the transition from one program session to the next an easy one. A smart podium, computer, projector, as
well as whiteboards will be available for use. Trained technology staff members will be on staff and readily
available for any problems that may occur.
Gilbertson Hall 202
Located within the same building as the Ott Auditorium, where business will be taking place, this lecture hall
is where the NRHH breakout session will be. Gilbertson Hall 202 can accommodate 60 people and will have
technology ready for use.
TSAR
The Thompson Student Activities Room is where philanthropy will be taking place during lunch sessions. The
TSAR and our Marketplace dining facility are located within the same building, providing an easy transition.
This room is spacious and gives a central location for all
who will be attending.
O’Neill Arena
The 60,000 square foot facility underwent a major renovation as part of the Ryder Center Expansion Project.
In this construction project, the orientation of the court
was switched, two new wood courts were added and
there were new bleachers installed. This will be the ideal area for our opening and closing ceremonies. With
a stage and other accommodations brought in, we are
excited to transform our arena into a rockin’ space to
gather the region.
Friday Night
Friday night’s dinner will be on your own in and around Saginaw. There are many wonderful
restaurants conveniently located around the hotels and close to campus. There is surely something for every appetite!

The mornings of Saturday and Sunday a
continental breakfast will be provided at each of
the three hotels. Starting well before business
and the first programs of the day, the hotels will
surely present a variety of meal options to satisfy morning hunger.
Saturday Lunch
Lunch on Saturday will be served in our
on-campus dining facility. Upon arrival, you will
be given a ticket for one-time entry into the Marketplace at Doan. Lunch will be broken up into
three sections and you will be assigned to a
section at the time of your registration. Philanthropy will be taking place during lunch times,
so while delegations are not at lunch they will
have the opportunity to take part in those various activities.
Hospitality
On both Friday and Saturday night we
will providing a variety of hospitality options
in each of the three hotels. Pizza, snacks and
drinks will be provided. All food allergies and
concerns will be accommodated as needed.
Closing Banquet
The closing banquet will take place in the
O’Neill Arena and will be catered by Saginaw
Valley’s Conference Center Catering. Assigned
seating will be arranged and plated meals will
be served during the banquet.
GLACURH’s Laboratory is coordinating an abundance of experiments (programs)
that are focused on improving student leaders’ knowledge in diversity, community service, residence halls, personal growth and leadership team building.

We are looking at having five sessions of experiments, with around 20 experiments
per session-each lasting 50 minutes.
Experiments will be executed in the 50 minute time slot, with performances based on
the following categories and tracks:
Diversity- CatDog
Community Service- Be someone’s ‘Hercules’
Improving Residence Hall- Home Improvement
Personal Growth- A League of their Own
Leadership Team Building- Little Giants
As per GLACURH tradition, we will have a top ten experiment session following a
short break after the final session, to tally votes together. Top Ten Experiments (Programs) will be determined and based off the evaluations from attendees. The Top
Ten presenters will receive an award and recognition during the GLACURH Choice
Awards (closing ceremonies) at GLACURH 2015.

For entertainment we decided to take an
approach we believe to be unique, mixing our
activities with some aspects of education. Planning a variety of activities to fit diverse needs,
entertainment can be categorized as Active or
Laid-Back. For the active portion, we will be offering various recreation in some of the auxiliary
gyms, as well as, Giant Twister, Giant Jenga,
and 90s Zumba! For those individuals wishing
to channel their inner creativity, we will be offering four rooms of activities such as crafting,
a game room, and more. To incorporate educational aspects, we will be serving mocktails
along with some alcohol education on the side.
Additionally, fitness education and stress management tips will be featured.
Entertainment will be hosted in facilities
near the opening ceremonies. The more active programs will be taking place at the Nest.
Conveniently located just across the street, the
laid-back events will be occurring in the same
classrooms as the programming sessions.

The opening ceremonies will be taped on set (O’Neill Arena) located in the Nest (Ryder Center).
Before taking the scene, there will be ongoing spirit, cheers and regional fun. This is the first opportunity for
producers and artists to earn slime points.
The ceremony will feature updates from the Dream Team, a Welcoming Address from an SVSU Official, and a keynote speaker. The keynote speaker will focus on an aspect of leadership not typically covered, such as acceptance, diversity or overcoming challenges. We are currently in contact with numerous
individuals as possible keynote speakers, but do not yet want to limit our options. Prepare for the throwback
of a lifetime as we kick off “Bringing Back Leadership.”
The grand finale of the 90’s Throwback: Bringing Back Leadership will take place in a transformed
version of the Set. The arena will be converted to accommodate the banquet and GLACURH Choice
Awards. This will be wrapping up a decade full of fun and leadership!

Unfortunately in the ‘90s, the world wide web was limited, but now we are able to do much more. There is
currently a website under construction which will include all files and postings for GLACURH 2015. As a team,
we are all sharing our documents through Google Drive in order to have an organized system to transfer files
into the website. On our website, we hope to have bi-weekly newsletters beginning in September and monthly newsletter prior to then. The launch date for the website would be April 6th. We will also be utilizing the
Guidebook app to share conference resources in an environmentally friendly fashion.
Social media will be one of the main tools in order to raise morale and spirit before and during the conference.
We currently have a Facebook page (GLACURH 2k15), a Twitter (@GLACURH2k15), an Instagram (GLACURH2k15) and a Snapchat (GLACURH2k15). With Facebook, we hope to easily communicate with the
producers and artists of the conference in preparation for opening day. On Twitter, we hope to quickly pass
along information during the conference with updates and perhaps possible points for spirit. Twitter will be our
main platform during the conference. Snapchat and Instagram will mainly be used for contests/ spirit and to
increase morale to show the producers and artists the preparation of the conference.
Being of the Great Lakes Region,
many of us have grown up near the
water. The Great Lakes are something that many of us take pride and
joy in. Since they are our most famous natural resource we need to
work to preserve them. The mission
of the Alliance of the Great Lakes is
to conserve and restore the world's
largest freshwater resource using
policy, education and local efforts,
ensuring a healthy Great Lakes and
clean water for generations of people
and wildlife. SVSU’s goal is to raise
$500 for this charity. The Sandlot
will be making a video concerning
the importance of the Great Lakes
to the members of the delegations
that participate in the philanthropy.
The top three delegations that raise
the most money will be recognized
with plaques. The Sandlot is working
in part with the Alliance of the Great
Lakes to give thanks to all the educators who have taught and connected
their students to the importance of
the Great Lakes. During lunch people
who want to participate in the Sandlot will write their thanks to these
great educators on cards provided
by the Alliance of the Great Lakes.
The boy band manager has begun the process of scouting for the greatest talent
available to form the great volunteer boy band of 2015. The “boy band” will be our
source of volunteers throughout the conference. We will be reaching out to several
on campus organizations including, but not limited to, SVSU’s RHA and community
councils, NRHH, residential life staff, all on campus Greek letter organizations, and
those involved in the leadership and service program to devote their time to help
during GLACURH as needed. The whole campus community will be made aware of
the service opportunity through the Cardinal Volunteer Center allowing anyone who is
interested to take part. We are seeking a boy band of between 75 and 100 members
that will be “performing” in shifts. The band’s training will be done through an extensive process that will have all members choreographed to perfection in time for their
big performance--GLACURH 2015!
