Argus 717 has been completely refurbished with a fresh, bright coat of paint and crisp new markings and is now back on its original mounting. Lab 308 has also been placed on a pad in the air park between the Argus and the T-Bird. The volunteer group from 14 Air Maintenance Squadron (AMS) cleaned the old paint and corrosion from the entire surface of the Argus and applied a new coat of paint, all done under very taxing conditions in an outdoor setting. July 10, another volunteer team from 14 AMS and 404 squadrons made slick work Dave’s Collision Works Ltd. The museum is also proud to showcase a new exhibit at the air park, the CH-113 Labrador helicopter. Lab 308 was decommissioned from 8 Wing Trenton and reassembled in 10 Hangar at 14 Wing Greenwood by another group of museum volunteers, guided by Lab veterans from IMP. July 11, the IMP team towed Lab 308 across the air field, through the main gate to its display pad next to the “new-look” Argus 717. Many displays inside the museum have been updated and staff is hoping to show off all the new exhibits to aviation and historical enthusiasts through the summer months. Navy contract would have huge reach By Sara Keddy, Managing editor, The Aurora Newspaper Ships and planes are connected. So are welders and mechanics, shop keepers and car salesmen. A t l e a s t , t h a t ’s t h e message being promoted by a wide-ranging group of Nova Scotian businesses, community organizations and levels of government. The Ships Start Here campaign is a grassroots effort Kingston Legion to see Nova Scotian shipyards land a share of the National Shipbuilding Procurement S t r a t e g y, a $ 3 0 b i l l i o n program announced in 2010 to build 20 combatant surface vessels for the Navy. Two shipyards will win the work; four are bidding. The deadline for proposals was July 7, but two yards – not Nova Scotia’s Irving Shipbuilding – were successful in getting a twoweek extension. In the meantime, efforts are afoot to have people from all walks of life in Nova Scotia check out shipsstarthere.ca. The website details the impact winning the work would have on the province, with benefits for workers, communities and the province as a whole for the life of the 30-year build. “Ships Start Here is a coalition of organizations who have come together, and the main area of focus of the Halifax bid is we’ve built 80 per cent of the fleet here,” says Sara Young of public relations firm MT&L. She points to the list of business leaders, politicians and others registering their support on the website, listing their reasons for wanting some of the work on the East coast. Irving Shipyards spokeswoman Deborah Hashey says the Navy is a “huge” customer of the company: “we’re right next door to the Navy dockyards, and we’ve done a lot of the on-going refits and builds over the years. “The Navy is a huge – and valuable – customer. Our ties are very, very close.” Hashey says those ties go beyond ship work: the shipyard’s work “supports a whole number of institutions – not only ships.” Also consider the links between a strong Navy base in Halifax and the associated operations with 14 Wing Greenwood’s air support services. “The economic spin-off is not solely centred on shipbuilding, and it is all over the province.” The project’s backers estimate the impact of Halifax work would create 11,500 jobs during peak employment, representing $500 million Sunday, 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. Regular Games - $125 • 1 Early bird - 60/40 • 2 - 60/40 • Letter H - 80/20 • 1 Lucky 7 - Progressive • 1 Bonanza - Progressive • Jackpot - 3 Chances Consolation $500 • Double Action Lic.# 35542-96 Helping you understand your PSAC severance cash-out options Join us for an exclusive learning opportunity Mimie’s 765-6888 765-2232 Date: July 26th and 27th, 2011 Specials Time: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 765-8848 Location: Community Room, Kingston Superstore Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 HMCS Halifax at Irving Shipbuilding’s Halifax Shipyard for its FELEX refit in September. I extend my heartiest congratulations to them all.” Operations planners at Canada Command Headquarters in Ottawa and at the Regional Joint Task Forces in Toronto, Halifax, Yellowknife and Edmonton have worked in close cooperation with colleagues from Canadian Heritage to ensure the logistics, transportation and ceremonial aspects of the tour have been carried out in every detail. “Since the royal couple arrived in Ottawa June 30 aboard the 437 Transport Squadron Airbus, Canadians have watched and admired our Regular and Reserve Force soldiers on parade, HMCS Montreal’s company guiding the duke and duchess down the St. Lawrence, air crews in waterbird, search and rescue and fly past operations, and our famed Snowbird air demonstration team.” “The CF is ready at all times to provide its unique capabilities in the service of our fellow Canadians, and during very special events such as this royal tour,” said Lieutenant-General Walter S e m i a n i w, c o m m a n d e r of Canada Command. “I want to add my sincere appreciation and congratulate all the women and men of the Canadian Forces who have contributed so much to making the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge such a resounding success. The Det has overcome a range of challenges to achieve stellar results, and new challenges surface daily. As the hot Sicilian summer intensifies, the temperature on the tarmac climbed toward 40 degrees Celsius on the second day of our visit as we prepared to go flying. Both aircrew and maintainers were sweat-soaked as the aircraft taxied to the runway. For our flight, we joined 405 Squadron’s Crew 4, flying their last operational mission after two months in theatre. Led by Flight Lieutenant Chris “Sprinks” Birrer, on exchange in Greenwood from Australia, the crew was a well-oiled machine, superbly employing all aircraft sensors to deliver the required operational effects. The mission was fascinating, and all three of us watched intently as the crew executed what had, by now, become routine. As Sprinks pointed out to us, experience shows them to expect the unexpected - something we saw firsthand during the latter part of the trip - and to be on guard for anything unusual or abnormal. While hanging out in the galley, the most telling sign we were deployed to Italy was the stack of pizza boxes neatly stowed in the compartment where flight meals are usually located, each bearing the name of a crew member, and an extra large pizza fixed with yellow tape to the aft work bench. As we neared off station time, the crew received news Mount Etna, an active volcano located northeast of Sigonella, had experienced an eruption (we called it a burp), its fifth since the beginning of the year, spewing volcanic ash into the atmosphere and forcing the air base at Sigonella and the airport at Catania to close overnight. With their “home plate” closed, the crew decided to recover at the Italian airbase at Trapani on the other side of Sicily, the deployment location for Canada’s CF-18s. On landing, the support the crew received from Bagotville’s 3 Mission Support Flight was outstanding, and Major Daniel Gendreau and his team pulled out all the stops to take great care of the crew. It was a very valuable trip. We saw firsthand how well the team is performing, confirmed our personnel are well taken care of and morale appeared to be great - and we passed on a couple of hugs. Just as a military member’s Military Identification Card identifies them as a Canadian Forces member, the MFID identifies you as a military family member. The MFID is recognized nationally, entitling the family to military discounts with participating businesses and allowing them entry to military activities and events. Before your loved one deploys, we strongly recommend you complete the necessary paperwork to obtain your own Military Family ID card. This card will allow you to continue to benefit from military discounts in your loved one’s absence as well as act as your ID should you have the opportunity to visit your loved one overseas. In the event of an emergency, it is best to be prepared by having an MFID. The MFID is available to immediate military family members, including spouses/ common-law partners and children aged 13 and over. The MFID is available to families of both regular and reserve force members. In Greenwood, MFID cards are issued by Ident. Section Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The forms cmay also be found at www. familyforce.ca as well as at the GMFRC front desk. For information, contact Sergeant Brigitte Martin at local 5336. Page 6 The Aurora Newspaper, 14 Wing Greenwood, NS July 18, 2011 Air team’s people: reason for success – outgoing commander By Major General Yvan Blondin, Commander 1 Cdn Air Div/ CANR I’ve been honoured to serve since 2006 at 1 Canadian Air Division/ Canadian NORAD Region Headquarters, with the last two years as your commander. As I pass the torch to Major-General Alain Parent, I’d like to share a few thoughts with you, the airmen and airwomen of Canada’s Air Force. As your operational commander, I am so incredibly impressed with the work done by our entire defence team, coast to coast and abroad. In the last couple years, we have experienced an operational tempo the Air Force hasn’t seen in generations. Overseas, we have maintained a crucial role with the air wing in Afghanistan, deployed CF-18s to Iceland for Op IGNITION, assisted the people of Haiti in Op HESTIA and we maintain a significant effort with Op MOBILE over Libya. In fact, we are in a time where virtually every fleet of operational aircraft are employed on operations. At home we supported the 2010 Olympics, the G8/ G20, and assisted with flood relief efforts and forest-fire evacuations across the country. We did all this while saving lives at home with search and rescue and keeping a tireless watch over our skies through our NORAD mission. No words can express the pride I feel from having had the privilege of serving as your commander. All of our successes are due to you, our proud airmen and airwomen, and your tireless efforts. My appreciation extends also to your families. Our collective success is due to the support we receive from our loved ones, and we must never forget that. In May, I had the honour of hosting the second annual Family Support Conference in Winnipeg. We saw the results of the Family Support Needs Assessment that captured how military families like yours perceive how their needs are being met. It is a critical step in improving how we support our loved ones, as they, too, sacrifice so much for our country. I’m proud we have made great strides in strengthening our support to our families. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing wings across the country forge ahead with delivering on commitments to the community and military families – specifically in the areas of medical care and childcare. This kind of dedicated support to each other and your families is the cornerstone of success that allows us to succeed in our missions, while ensuring we take care of our most valuable resource – our people. I thank you all for your hard work and the selfless dedication you continuously demonstrate in service to your country. I am honoured to hand command over to Major-General Parent, knowing what an incredible team he is inheriting. 1 Canadian Air Division Commander Major General Yvan Blondin was born in Montreal and started out as a pilot 29 years ago. He has earned the Canadian Forces Decoration First Clasp, Peacekeeping Medal, North American Treaty Organization Yugoslavia Medal, the Order of Military Merit and the Afghanistan Service Cross. Image Corporal Levarre McDonald Force for learning By Brigadier-General Rick Pitre, Commander, 2 Canadian Air Division When I received the mandate over two years ago to stand up the new 2 Canadian Air Division, I knew that we had our work cut out for us. We transformed the Air Force construct to create the Air Force Doctrine and Training Division in June 2009, marking a new and exciting chapter in our rich Air Force history. In less than a year, a small d e d i c a t e d g r o u p o f s t a ff came together to regroup the majority of Air Force training, education and lessons learned functions into one formation. This reorganization enabled a better focus on doctrine, training and associated support for the Air Force, while allowing 1 Canadian Air Division to enhance its focus on operations at home and abroad. This new direction for the Air Force was a fundamental step in our ability to progress as Greenwood Golf Club ½ Season Rates Go into Effect 15 July 2011 Single Adult Rates start at $375 a learning organization. In two short years, we have grown from a small headquarters at initial operating capability to a strong, lean, and agile organization. I’m proud to say 2 Canadian Air Division has made a truly valuable contribution to the Air Force in developing our doctrine and training programs, while continuing to generate forces for operations. The significant progress of this organization is largely due to the many staff dedicated to seeing the development of this formation into a reality. All over the country, Air Force personnel were committed to transforming the Air Force into a learning organization. I couldn’t be happier knowing BrigadierGeneral Galvin will be taking command of such a devoted group of personnel. As a result of your outstanding work, 2 Canadian Air Division has helped the Air Force stand out as a responsive, forwardthinking, and innovative organization. I amgrateful to all those who played a role in developing a concept into the organization that exists today. It was a pleasure to serve with you, and it is with great honour I pass command to Brigadier-General Galvin. Image Corporal Colin Aitken The Aurora Newspaper, 14 Wing Greenwood, NS July 18, 2011 Page 7 Busy weekend adds up for SAR crews By Major Scott Tromp, 413 Squadron CH 149 pilot 413 Squadron as its members completed three separate search and rescue missions on the July 8 weekend. When all was said and done, seven people had been transported to safety and the CC130 and CH149 crews had flown a total of 18 hours, most of which occurred in darkness. The first mission occurred on the evening of July 8. Rescue 908, a CH149 helicopter, was tasked to medivac an injured hiker from mountainous terrain in Cape Breton. The crew proceeded to the North River area and was able to find the individual’s signal fire using night vision goggles. The injured hiker was in a gorge at the base of a 300-foot waterfall that made rescue by the helicopter crew at night difficult. Once established, the SAR techs were lowered to the injured hiker via a 200-foot hoist. The SAR techs provided first aid, stabilized the casualty and determined recovery would be via the rescue basket. The basket was lowered, the hiker and SAR techs retrieved and the injured man was taken to Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney to receive further medical attention. The second mission occurred early July 10. Rescue 911, a CH149 helicopter, and Rescue 328, a CC130 aircraft, were tasked to proceed to the fishing vessel Bessie Wilfred, 20 nautical miles southeast of Port Hawkesbury. The vessel was taking on water and the crew was concerned it would need to abandon ship. By the time the SAR crews arrived at the squadron, they were informed the crew had indeed abandoned ship and were now afloat in their life raft. Both aircraft departed Greenwood to offer assistance. The CC130 arrived on scene first and was able to locate the life raft and drop a smoke to mark the position for the arrival of the helicopter. Once on scene, the helicopter crew assessed the situation and determined all six people on the raft would need to be hoisted to safety since no surface vessels were able to provide assistance. The CC130 climbed into the clouds and proceeded to drop illumination flares to assist the CH149 crew with the night recovery. Sergeant Norm Penny was hoisted to the raft to secure the fisherman and provide support to Master Corporal Rob Featherstone, who then completed six individual rescue sling recoveries on the hoist of the CH149. Once medical assessments of the fishermen were complete, they were taken to the Halifax International Airport by the CH149. The final SAR mission completed by 413 Squadron crews occurred at 0100 hrs July 12. The CC130 and CH 149 were both tasked to proceed to Mirimichi Bay to search for an overdue open fishing boat with two people on board. The rescue mission was hampered by severe thunderstorms en route, but both the Hercules and the Cormorant arrived on scene. Approximately one hour into the search, a Canadian Coast Guard vessel located the search object at anchor. Mechanical difficulties had left the vessel and occupants stranded to await recovery. Medical attention was not required, so the SAR aircraft were cleared to return to Greenwood. Challenged by weather and darkness, 413 Squadron crews, both air and ground, put rubber on the ramp, planes in the sky and made a difference in the life of several Atlantic Canadians and were a credit to the 14 Wing team. The RCMP Musical Ride represents a colourful Canadian tradition. The troop of 32 horses and riders perform a variety of cavalry drills choreographed to music. Working through a unique medium, they support RCMP community policing efforts throughout Canada. The Musical Ride was developed in 1876 by early members of the North-West Mounted Police to display their riding ability and entertain the local community. It has evolved over the decades into a uniquely Canadian performance, enjoyed by tens of thousands of spectators every year. Members of the Musical Ride are first and foremost police officers. They all have at least two years’ experience in active police work before volunteering for the ride. Surprisingly, most have no prior riding experience. The preschool summer camp celebrated and learned about different celebrations from around the world. Monday, our little campers celebrated Canada Day. They spent the day having fun in the sun and making life size cutouts of themselves. Tuesday was Earth Day. The campers went on a nature walk and collected some nature treasures to dive deep in the ocean, go searching for animals in a safari adventure, explore the lost tomb of a great pharaoh and head back to the high seas for a pirate adventure. Programs such as summer camp provide young children with opportunities for social interaction and learning. Games, skills and drills filled the week, starting with a full day at the Apple Bowl Monday, which included relay races, some footwork drills and a shoot out. Tuesday, we shared a chocolate treat and a rainy day movie with the French and day camps, and then headed over to the Fitness and Sports Centre for a swim indoors. A world cup soccer tournament and a fun game of soccer baseball kept Wednesday jam-packed. Thursday consisted of a variety of shooting and dribbling skills. We spent Friday demonstrating our newly-learned skills in our own tournament. This week, sports camp participants will attempt to achieve their hoop dreams as they dribble their way into basketball week, which includes a trip to Nova Scotia’s Sports Hall of Fame at the Halifax Metro Centre. Photo par Natasha Dallaire Mystery solved at GMFRC By Kim Dixon, GMFRC coordinator of child and youth services June 23, there were many sightings of local super heroes around the Morfee Centre. With capes flowing in the wind, these brave little super heroes were busy trying to solve the mystery of a hidden treasure. Using only a map and their special hero powers, 10 adventurous little boys Sudoku aged three to five participated in the GMFRC Little Boy Super Hero Party. Our little heroes had a great time solving the mystery and then enjoyed a yummy snack before decorating their own wooden map boxes to take home. Programs such as the Little Boys Super Hero Party provide Canadian Forces children the opportunity to make connections with other children, while having fun in a supervised activity. Special thanks to our GMFRC heroes, Mick Tanner and volunteer Natasha Dallard, who ensured the children had a safe and funfilled morning of adventures. Metro Crossword Solution page 14 ACROSS 1. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! The Guys and Dolls tournament was held July 10 and it was a lot of fun. Thanks to Ian and Wayne (and Sandra and Cathy) for all their work putting this tournament together. Imagine two Capers organizing a tournament, and it still went well! I am sure the ladies will take credit for keeping those Capers on the straight and narrow. Thanks also to Rose for the delicious meal. After all the counting was done, the winners (Field Low Net) were Doug Carpenter and me. I think I heard Glenn Waters say he would deliver the trophy to us sometime soon - he and Sandy won it last year! I don’t honestly think there is a trophy for this tournament - but there should be! The other winners of the day were 1st low net Scotty Cooper and Betty Saltzman, 2nd low net Eric & Margie Welin, 3rd low net Glen Waters and Sandy Adams, 4th low net Bob & Sharyn Trimm and 5th low net Ian MacKenzie and Sheila Johnson. The closest to the pin The 19 hole th prizes went to Donna Hill #8 and #11 Sharyn Trimm. Men’s prizes went to Wayne Cathcart #3 and Doug Smith picked up the extra prize (since none of the men hit the green on #13). Doug and I had the pleasure of golfing with Ian and Sheila. We certainly had a lot of laughs. It’s a good thing Sheila was there: Ian will have to invest in a company who makes golf balls or maybe get a sponsor! Here is a short recap of July 13, with 19 ladies out. We played Pinehurst - except for the three stooges who played a scramble because they didn’t understand the pinehurst and still couldn’t beat the field. You know who you are! We saw a lovely young deer on #8 green: apparently, he liked us all so much, he came back several times. The winners were 1st Margie W. & Joan D., 2nd Audrey C. & Sue O’C., 3rd Carolyn L. & Erma R., 4th Ruth H. and Laura.F. Good thing A won tonight: she may have to put her winning towards the cart sign she ran over! (Charlie the cart is OK). Cyndi is still laughing: she missed her shot and blamed it on A. Good fun had by all. The 50/ 50 was won by Sandra Cathcart. That is two she has won, her taxes may go up! Recently, several teams went to Clare for the Acadian Scramble (two-person). Although none of the teams came home with winnings, Wanda and Wendy did manage to take a few coins off the team of Scotty and Doug and the team of Paul A. and Mike Clark. It is not about the amount; it is about the bragging rights. Thanks, guys, and thank you Wanda! From the desk of Mu By Margie Dunphy Well, another sorority year has come to an end, and Mu chapter has finished its twice a month meetings until September. This past year has been a rewarding and fun-filled learning experience. Along with many in-house programs, we met a number of interesting and lively personalities.
