Cambridge & Chelmsford Working at Anglia Ruskin University www.anglia.ac.uk Contents Welcome Our Benefits Our Vision and Values General Information 1 2–5 6 7–9 Our Locations 10 Our Links with Employers 11 History 12 Facts and Figures Dear prospective applicant We realise that these days every career step has to be weighed carefully and we want you to be in full possession of the facts before you decide whether you want to come and join in our East of England adventure. We do hope you will! While our history goes back over 150 years – the Cambridge School of Art having been opened by John Ruskin in October 1858 – we are less than 20 years old as a University and therefore have the delight of adopting established university traditions as well as inventing new ones. Our history is uniquely entwined with that of our region. Indeed we have developed outreach campuses in Harlow and Peterborough and have a significant presence in Kings Lynn and Milton near Cambridge through a partnership with the College of West Anglia. We have pioneered degree-level learning in the work place with such major employers as Barclays, Boots, Specsavers, UPS, Crawfords, Ridgeons and Harrods and this will become an increasing feature of our work in the next few years. And our international partnerships go from strength to strength in countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, Malaysia and China where students study our programmes in their own countries. We are proud of our research achievements to date and have an unambiguous commitment to increase the rate of development of our research. We have set demanding targets to ensure that each and every Faculty has world recognised research and are establishing a number of exciting interdisciplinary centres which build on our existing areas of expertise. In recent years we have invested more than £180 million in new facilities and have transformed our campuses as well as establishing new University Centres in Peterborough and Harlow. If you have not visited us recently and think you know what we look like, you will be wrong! We hope that as you read this you will become infected by our enthusiasm for Anglia Ruskin University and our ambition for its regional, national and international role. We are going places and do hope that you'll want to consider joining us on that journey. Yours sincerely Professor Michael Thorne Vice Chancellor Welcome Thank you for your interest in Anglia Ruskin University. The attached information has been put together to help you decide if you want to make an application. We are a special academic community and we are proud of the lifetime relationships created among those who work and study here, and of the friendly atmosphere – which visitors quickly identify as unusual for such a large organisation. Benefits Our Benefits We are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all. Our goal is to maximise the potential of our staff and students, to be responsive to new ideas, and ultimately to equip all our students for life in a multicultural and diverse society. Our commitment to our staff is just as strong, and we offer an extensive range of benefits. We aim to be regarded as an employer of choice locally, nationally and internationally. Benefits include family-friendly policies, sports and nursery facilities, a competitive rewards package and a genuine commitment to all our employees’ professional development. 2 An Award Winning Employer We hold a number of awards including: • Investors in People (IiP) • Positive about Disabled People (the double tick symbol) • RoSPA Quality Safety Award at Level 5 for Health and Safety Performance • Customer Service Excellence Accreditation We are members of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme; the Employers Network for Equality; and the Mindful Employer scheme. In 2006–7 we were part of the Government’s Exemplar Employer initiative. Final Salary Pension Schemes We operate two final salary pension schemes, which offer a tax-free, lump sum payment on retirement, together with an annual index-linked pension. New employees automatically join one of the schemes on commencing employment (unless they choose to opt out). Both of these schemes offer attractive guaranteed benefits to all our staff and are a major component of our employment package. Staff Development We recognise how important staff development is to our continuing success, and we are committed to fostering a culture that values learning and growth. We offer an impressive range of staff development sessions and events, all designed to enhance personal and professional effectiveness at work including: management skills; learning and teaching skills; and research skills. Fee Waiver opportunities may also be available for our programmes of study. Our staff surveys consistently tell us that our staff particularly value the range and quality of the development and support we offer. Preserving our Environment We are committed to continual improvement in the management of our environmental impacts. We have instigated a number of initiatives to help address this including replacing our older, less efficient, building stock with more energy efficient buildings. We have installed sub-metering across our estate, to understand where our energy waste occurs, and are beginning to install movement sensor lighting, energy efficient hand dryers and dual flush toilets. We provide recycling facilities to our staff and students and also run staff and student environmental competitions. “We hold a RoSPA Level 5 Diamond Health and Safety Award. The only educational establishment in the UK to hold this award.” We have a green travel plan called ‘Smart Travel to Anglia Ruskin’ (STAR) where staff can find information on interest free loans, our staff cycle scheme and discounts with local transport providers. Our recent awards include: 3 “ 74% of respondents to our Staff Survey in 2011 said that they think this is a good place to work.” • a ‘first class award’ in the People & Planet Green League for the past 5 years • Business in the Community Environment Index – Bronze Award 2010 • Travel for Work Partnership – Certificate of continuing excellence 2011 • Essex County Council – Essex Business Travel Plan Gold Award 2011 • Fairtrade Status in 2007 (maintained annually) Family-friendly We recognise that in today’s workplace, people’s needs and circumstances often change over time. Nursery facilities are provided at our Cambridge Campus, while at Chelmsford we collaborate with a private nursery to offer childcare places. Both nurseries are run by experienced, qualified staff. We also operate a Child Care Voucher Scheme which offers tax and National Insurance savings. Employee Support Helpline We operate a 24-hour Employee Support Helpline, offering practical advice in a variety of areas. Professional counsellors are also on hand to provide personal support on a range of issues. This service is also available to family members who reside with our employees. Supporting our Wider Community 4 We aim to positively engage with our wider community. Our staff and students are encouraged to participate in a number of events to achieve this aim. Events include our annual Community Fun Day and Student Volunteer Week (which is open to both staff and students). We also support three charities, these are: The Music Therapy Appeal, Mission Croatia and the Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity which has its research laboratory on our campus. In addition to supporting these charities our staff have been involved in raising money for a wide variety of charities such as: Breast Cancer Awareness, Children in Need, Jeans for Genes. Many of our staff also take part in events such as the Race for Life. Sport, Leisure and Arts Staff at both Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses have access to sports facilities. Our Chelmsford campus houses the Mildmay Sports Centre and our Cambridge campus boasts an on-site gym and a nearby sports centre. Our Chelmsford campus is located just a 30 minute train journey from the Stratford Olympic site. We are proud to support the 2012 Olympics and we are part of the Chelmsford Olympic Consortium and have offered sports facilities and accommodation for Olympic Athletes. Our Cambridge campus houses the Mumford Theatre – a fully operational 250 seat professional theatre that hosts a year round programme of events. Research We expect all academic staff to engage in research and scholarly activity. We also encourage staff to undertake consultancy, action research, or to support Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and other similar schemes. In the Government's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) for Higher Education institutions more than 30% of our submissions were rated as World-Leading and Internationally Excellent. We came out top of the 'new' universities for Psychology, second for English Language and Literature and third for History in the Times Higher Education tables. 7 Structure, Academic Management and Governance Our Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive is Professor Michael Thorne. The Vice Chancellor is supported by the Vice Chancellor’s Group (VCG) which consists of three Deputy Vice Chancellors, each with specific areas of responsibility, plus the Director of Finance and the Secretary and Clerk to the Governors. “...a stimulating learning environment in which our staff and students can flourish and fulfil their potential.” Deans of Faculties and Directors of Support Services combine with the Vice Chancellor’s Group to form the Corporate Management Team (CMT) and are responsible for our strategic and operational functions. Our academic activities are organised into four discipline-based Faculties, each headed by a Dean. Each has a Faculty Board responsible for inter alia quality assurance and curriculum development. Academic authority rests with Senate, which is responsible for academic development in research, scholarship and teaching; the establishment of criteria for the admission of students; the appointment of external examiners; the assessment of students; the structure of the curriculum; quality assurance and the award of degrees and other qualifications, including honorary awards. Our four Faculties are: Lord Ashcroft International Business School Lord Ashcroft International Business School offers a range of distinctly practice based business and management courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level on our Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses. Its focus is upon academically rigorous but practically relevant education. The School provides a range of undergraduate and postgraduate awards for full and part-time students and places a high priority on the quality of teaching. The School has an enviable reputation for preparing students for employment in an increasingly competitive international environment. It has a maximum of 24 members, the majority of whom are independent. Other members include the Vice Chancellor, three staff representatives and the President of the Students' Union. The Board is assisted by a number of sub-committees which handle much of its detailed work. Financial Overview We are incorporated under the Education Reform Act (1989) as a Higher Education Corporation and are an exempt charity. Our annual turnover is in excess of £160m. Around 34% of our income is from the funding councils, 15% from the NHS, 32% from tuition fees, and 12% from research and consultancy. We have a constant challenge to ensure that we are able to maintain and grow our income, despite the vagaries of Government funding. For this reason, we are seeking to diversify our income streams in order to ensure long term sustainability and freedom of action. “We have invested more than £180 million in new facilities and have transformed our campuses” 9 Our Locations Our Locations Cambridge Campus The Cambridge campus is in heart of the city and has recently reached a milestone in its history with the opening of the new £35-million redevelopment. The regenerated campus opened in September 2011 and provides a wealth of new facilities which will benefit our Anglia Ruskin community. The Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education also operates on the outskirts of Cambridge in Fulbourn which has close links to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Chelmsford Campus Our modern Chelmsford campus is just a 10 minute walk from Chelmsford city centre and railway station. The campus benefits from stunning buildings and has a wealth of industry-leading facilities including a new Health and Social Care building with state-of-the-art medical equipment and facilities, the Mildmay sports hall with a well equipped gym and a recently developed Student Centre. Peterborough Campus The newly refurbished Guild House in Peterborough is now home to our Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education. The revamped site is a superb learning environment benefiting from new skills labs, lecture spaces and breakout areas. A Regional Presence In order to make Higher Education accessible to all we have developed links with a range of regional colleges, these include; University Centre Harlow, University Centre Peterborough and University Centre West Anglia (King’s Lynn). An International Presence We have an increasing number of overseas students from more than 70 different countries outside the EU. This has created a very diverse academic community for the benefit for all our students. Our overseas university partnerships include China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, India, USA and Canada. 10 Our Links with Employers A number of local employers also take the time to mentor our students to develop our graduates’ employability skills base. In 2008 we won £5.6 million from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to further our work through a project entitled ‘higherskills@work’. Higher Skills are now working with over 50 large businesses nationwide including, Harrods, UPS and Specsavers. In most cases we deliver degree based programs in the workplace and on line, giving employers a unique and tailored service. Our Links with Employers We have strong links with a wide range of employers, which include commercial organisations, not-for-profit bodies, and public authorities in line with the Government’s initiative to encourage universities to play a more active role in driving technological capacity and knowledge transfer to support the economic growth of UK plc through the enhancement of the skills and knowledge base. 11 Our History History Our origins date back to 1858 when the Cambridge School of Art was first opened by John Ruskin. The school survived in that form until 1960 when it became the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology. Meanwhile in Chelmsford, a school for vocational studies established in 1893 was evolving to become the Chelmsford School of Science and Art. It was to go under a variety of names during the 20th Century and in 1984 it changed again, from the Mid Essex Technical College and Chelmer Institute of Higher Education to the Essex Institute of Higher Education (EIHE). In 1989 the EIHE merged with the Cambridge College of Arts and Technology to become Anglia Higher Education College. In 1991 this institution became Anglia Polytechnic and in 1992 it was awarded university status and became Anglia Polytechnic University (APU). The word polytechnic was initially retained in the title because of the pride in our history and our commitment to inclusivity. By 2000 however, we were the last University still using the term, so after consultations with staff, students and local residents, the Privy Council approved a change of name. On 29 September 2005 we became known as Anglia Ruskin University. John Ruskin Born in London in 1819, John Ruskin was a poet, artist, social critic and prolific author. The son of a wine importer, he entered Christ Church, Oxford, without any formal qualifications, yet he excelled in his studies and was awarded the Newdigate prize for poetry. He went on to become the first Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford in 1869. Ruskin College is named in his honour. In 1858 John Ruskin opened the School of Art in Sidney Street, Cambridge, and so laid the foundation for our own University. Over 150 years later the Cambridge School of Art still forms part of Anglia Ruskin University. John Ruskin 12 During his time at Christ Church Ruskin began to develop his opinions on the relationship between human beings and society, nature, architecture, craftsmanship and ideas. Those views continue to shape our society today, providing the social and philosophical foundations for the free schools, free libraries and museums, and free healthcare that we now take for granted. Facts and Figures We have around 30,000 students. 17% of our students come from outside the European Union. We have one of the highest employability rates in the HE sector. The National Graduate Employment Survey shows that 90% of our students go straight into jobs or into further training or Higher Education.* In some areas this figure is exceeded, rising to 95% for our Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education. Our research is world leading – according to the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, we came top out of the 'new' universities for psychology, second for English language and literature and third for history.** We employ circa 2100 members of staff. In 2008 we achieved 6th place in the Halifax/Times HE University Quality of Life Index. Through our efforts to reduce our environmental impact we have achieved accreditation to ISO 14001, an internationally recognised standard. Famous alumni include: Lord Ashcroft, KCMG; Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Syd Barrett; Harry Potter illustrator Thomas Taylor; Roger Law (creator of Spitting Image); Dr. Kim Howells MP and Nicholas Crane. Honorary graduates include: Kylie Minogue; Mary Jane Drummond; Kate Barker CBE; Jilly Cooper; Frankie Dettori; Stephen Fry; Germaine Greer; Griff Rhys Jones; Sir Geoff Hurst; John Peel; Kate Adie; Terry Waite CBE; Professor Simon Schama CBE; Anya Hindmarch MBE; Quentin Blake; Martina Cole; Baroness Scott Young and Jimmy Doherty. *Source Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) Employment Indicator 2006/7 **Source Times Higher Education tables Cambridge & Chelmsford HR Services Anglia Ruskin University Bishop Hall Lane Chelmsford CM1 1SQ This publication is printed on sustainable resources. visit: www.anglia.ac.uk/hr/jobs email: [email protected] For information about our privacy and data protection policy, click www.anglia.ac.uk/privacy call: 0845 196 4740 June 2012 www.anglia.ac.uk Corporate Marketing 11-12/098/DS
