Cold Case Carolyn, Part II
Breck Porter / The Police News
This is the continuation of the story in
our August edition entitled “Cold Case
Carolyn, Was That Her In The Freezer?”
ALVIN, TX – Carolyn and Gerald Long were
both connivers and schemers. They would do
anything they could to make a buck, or steal a
buck. Some people just go through life trying
to screw other people out of what belongs to
them rather than working and earning. That
was Carolyn and Gerald.
Police in Texas and Oklahoma were convinced that Carolyn was responsible for the
sudden disappearance of one of her husbands, Roy Bernard. After he dropped out of
site, Carolyn got busy cleaning out his bank
accounts, and transferring his property, from
his name into another ex-husbands name.
It’s no wonder the police were suspicious.
Of course the two of them were in cahoots

Justin Fuller Executed For Grisly 1997 Tyler Murder August 24, 2006
We look back on the 1997 crime which
shocked East Texas by the bizarre and disturbing details.
Donald Whittington wasn’t involved in
crime, or anything other than what friends
say was a quiet, kind life. “Friendly and
personable. I would say he’s just a normal guy, an average guy,” said an acquaintance in 1997.
Donald was maced, tied up and taken
from his apartment by Justin Fuller,
Samhermundre Wideman, Elaine Hays,
and Brent Chandler. Whittington was
forced to withdraw money from his bank,
but then was taken to Lake Tyler.
He was led to his death. That was on
April 21st, 1997.
Whittington was shot multiple times, and
his body left in the woods a hundred yards
from shore. The crime scene wasn’t discovered for days — at least by the police.
Curious teenagers from Chapel Hill
heard of the crime and toured the site.
They never told police.
Fuller had bragged about the killings in
Chapel Hill. That was home to both
Whittington and the defendants.
Chapel Hill ISD police officer Steve
Dunklin told KLTV in 1997, “At no time did
anyone tell an adult or law enforcement.
They kept it to themselves, went out, and
looked at the body.”
Even more bizarre: the group stole the
victim’s clothes from his apartment, even
his underwear. And then there was Justin
Fuller’s booking photo. He was wearing
colored contact lenses his co-defendants
said belonged to Donald Whittington.
Fuller’s cohorts also pointed directly to
him as the shooter. The prosecution commenced. “Bound up like a mummy, on
his hands with Fuller standing over his
head,” was how then Smith County
District Attorney Jack Skeen described the
scene.
With the evidence and testimony, much
of it graphic, a jury found Fuller guilty of
capital murder. And of all the defendants,
he was the only one set to die. It was a
verdict that shattered two families.
After the verdict, Donald Whittington II,
father of the victim, told reporters, “Our
son’s gone and we still lost — lost miserably. At least [Fuller’s parents] got a
chance to see their son before he’s gone.
But the Lord be with us and them to follow
us through this.”

Dear Editor,
I read your paper from front to back
twice. Even read the ads. Now that’s
involved.
As a retired law enforcement officer I
found The Police News thoroughly enjoyable and informing.
I manage an apartment complex now
and keep a file on sex offenders. Your
page has now been added to that file as
well as your Wanted section.
Loved the part on executions also. So
good to hear them say they are sorry and
recognize the victims families as well as
their own.
Enjoyed our conversation so much.
Looking forward to The Police News coming to Beaumont.
I will be email you for my subscription.
Can’t wait to read the continuation of the
Long and Bell stories.
Keep up the great work.
Respectfully
Sandra McGahey
Sour Lake, TX
P.S. The puzzle was great also.
Dear Editor;
I do not even live in Danny Weber’s district, but he emails to me and answers my
email! I guess he realizes that most decisions by council effect the whole island.
I agree they could leave off the councils
reports and it would definitely shorten the
meetings, but then maybe some of them
would like to see us tire of waiting and
leave. Some are treated with a smile and
welcome and others are treated with a
smirk and frowns.

(Editors Note: Danny Weber is the
Galveston City Councilman representing
District 5. The writer’s comments are
in response to a Police News online editorial labeling the comments of some council members as meaningless drivel,
except for Weber and Councilwoman
Jackie Cole who report on current issues
in government.)
To The Editor,
I work in Department of Corrections, no
I am more than a guard, I am a correctional officer.
Behind all those walls and razorwire is a
whole community. The best of the worst
and the worst of the worst are housed
there.
Daily when I go through the entrance I
have no gurantee that I am going to walk
out on my own. I am always breaking up
fights, confiscating homemade weapons,
facing deadly diseases. I have seen many
suicide attempts and assist in bringing
them back to life.
As a law enforcement official – a days
job is never the same and the stress at
times seems so overwhelming. I applaud
my fellow officers.
Our minds are never our own for we all
learn to be more than cautious, even off
duty, never trust and always be alert. It
never leaves you. There are so many suicides when correctional officers retire for
this is all they know. Counseling and alcoholism take many…sad statistics for men
and women who put their lives on the line
daily.
Families fall apart for they think they
know what the other is going thru but how
do you explain emotions?
Thanks to all who serve.

Editor,
A recent article from the Toronto
Star–“the ICE idea,” is catching on and it
is a very simple, yet important method of
contact for you or a loved one in case of
an emergency. As cell phones are carried
by the majority of the population, all you
need to do is program the number of a
contact-person or persons and store the
name as “ICE”.
The idea was thought up by a paramedic
who found that when they went to the
scenes of accidents, there were always
mobile phones with patients, but they didn’t know which numbers to call.
He therefore thought that it would be a
good idea if there was a (Inter)nationally
recognized name to file “next of kin”
under.
Following a disaster in London The East
Anglican Ambulance Service has launched
a national “In case of Emergency (ICE)”
campaign. The idea is that you store the
word “ICE “ in your mobile phone address
book, and with it enter the number of the
person you would want to be contacted
“In Case of an Emergency.”
In an emergency situation, Emergency
Services personnel and hospital staff
would then be able to quickly contact your
next of kin, by simply dialing the number
programmed under “ICE”.
Please forward this. It won’t take too
many “forwards” before everybody will
know about this. It really could save your
life, or put a loved one’s mind at rest.
For more than one contact name simply
enter ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

You Don’t Pull a Gun on a Cop
On Wednesday afternoon, Terrence
Mason, the bad guy, was in an alley with a
gun.
Somebody flagged down the good guy,
police officer Daniel Price.
He told the bad guy to freeze, Mason didn’t and shots were fired.
Those are truncated, but undisputed facts
up to this point.
Now some people want to know who shot
first. Shame on them for even asking that
question! I hope that officer Price shot first.
Here s a bad guy, waving around a gun,
putting innocent, law abiding people in danger. Suddenly, we need a hero. Along
comes a cop and he jumps into harms way
to protect some perfect strangers.
He gets shot doing it and what do we do
once the danger is past? We ask if he followed all the proper procedures and
whether he shot at the bad guy first.
Every police officer needs to know that
they re entitled to protect their lives while
they protect us.
There are rules of a civilized society folks!
You don’t pull a gun on a cop — you don’t
run when they tell you to stop and you don’t
shoot at them. If you do, YOU are responsible for what happens.
What officer Price did was heroic and
brave. We should be organizing a parade
for this guy, not second guessing him.

fact that I was trying to handle the estate
of my deceased father who passed away
only 21 days before the dumbasses at
LCPD arrested me at my friend’s house.
The arrest was only precipitated by an
anonymous phone call placed by my
brother’s illegal alien roomate. Her name
is Victoria Garcia or at least that is the
name she is giving to our government.
The same government that is paying her
food stamps and she’s not even suppose
to be in this country. It was motivated out
of greed.
My brother thought by locking me up, he
would become executor of the estate and
inherit all. But, I digress, there is no proof
that I ever stayed at that house in League
City more than 7 days in a row and I will
beat this idiotic gestapo based crime.
I’m not even guilty of the original crime
and I’m doing what I can currently to be
rid of the original arrest. That of course
will make me sans the registration requirement.
Prepare to be sued in civil court for your
statements and assumptions.
Good day, idiots.
Love, Darren Slawson
(Editors Note: Darren Slawson was
arrested in League City following months
of investigation by The Police News and
Galveston Crime Stoppers which uncovered the fact that he was living and working in League City while registering as a
sex offender with the Galveston Police
Department using a phony Galveston
address.
As with most criminals he now blames
us for his problems. He faces a possible
10-years in prison for failing to register in
the proper jurisdiction. Additionally he
sent us this email using a real estate company e-mail that he was not authorized to
use.)

I like getting the GC Police News and
weather alerts....
I think that the stories are of interest to
those of us living here in Galveston
County.
After reading down towards the questions I came back to voice a couple of my
opinionated opinions...
Yes I have visited some of the businesses listed on the site. I also clicked on a link
one day after reading about the “good”
for you chocolate.
I don’t know if GC News checks out the
links they post but this one was for a really expensive chocolate. I was kind of surprised with that one.
And yes I see the Police News in stores
here in Texas City where I live.
Now as for the Sex Offender listing I
think that is in my opinion probably the
most important.
I recently had an occasion, when I was
at a local business, when a man put his
hand on my shoulder.
He was “greeting” me even though he
didn’t know me. I had a very uneasy feeling when he touched me but kind of blew
if off. After looking at the Sex Offender listing, who do you think was there??? Yep, it
was the creep that had touched me.
Call it “gut feeling” or “women’s intuition” or whatever you want. I had the feeling when that creep touched me and I was
glad to see him listed. I hope more folks
take the time to review and remember the
perverts!!!

I think the paper is a benefit for those
that read it...
I have noticed typos in some of the articles. I use to proofread for a newspaper so
I tend to pick up on those things quite easily.
Overall I’m pleased with the GC Police

Department Of Energy
Changes in Minimum SEER Ratings for A/C Equipment
EPA mandate – As of January 23, 2006 the
Department of Energy will no longer allow Air
Conditioning manufacturers to produce equipment that has an efficiency rating of less than
SEER 13.
Impact on equipment – The new equipment
will be larger in size. The outside condenser
coils and the inside evaporator coils will be larger to achieve the higher rating. Larger coils will
allow more heat to be absorbed or rejected with
less energy to meet the higher requirements.
Connecting the two A/C components is two copper refrigerant lines allowing the “Freon” containing the heat from inside to move to the condenser and reject the heat outside. 13 SEER
systems contain approximately 50% more refrigerant than the older 10 or 12 SEER systems
according to the manufacturers. With more
refrigerant in the systems the copper lines carrying the “Freon” must be larger. This is not a
problem with new systems being installed but
old systems will require the “suction” line to be
changed for the system to work as prescribed by
Rheem, Ruud, Lennox, Carrier and Trane.
Impact on Manufacturers – Manufacturers of
Rheem equipment and others have been preparing for this change and stopped taking orders for
the lower rated equipment back in October and
November of 2005 and ceased producing it
around November 2005 and began producing
the higher rated equipment to be sold in 2006.
Impact on Customers – Uninformed customers will be surprised and in some cases
shocked that their A/C contractor is telling them
they will have to change more equipment than
❝
the one component that failed. The customers
will think the contractor is trying to make a larger sale than is needed. The truth is their equipment must be “matched” for size and if the
older equipment is no longer available after
January 23, 2006 then they have no choice but
to change to more efficient equipment. This is
not bad, more efficiency means less money
spent to heat and cool the house in the future.
In many cases the amount of money saved will
more than cover the cost of the new and more
efficient system. All of the A/C contractors are
quick to point this out to customers and can provide projected savings in energy with software
provided by the manufacturers and the energy
companies.
Down falls by Uninformed Contractors – Over
the years customers have had equipment
changed out as needed and the contractors
should have matched the new equipment to the
old equipment but unfortunately that has not
always been the case. So after a number of
years, the system can be mismatched or worse,
the original installation was over or under sized.
Heating and cooling loads should be calculated
to insure the proper size when contemplating a
new heating or cooling system for the house.
Air Conditioning Contractors of America
(ACCA) has done studies to determine common
problems with A/C systems in the U.S. and
found 70% of the A/C systems are over sized
and the house has humidity problems. Here in
Houston, Texas, humidity is a constant and to
compound the problem by not sizing the A/C
system correctly is a disservice to the customer.
A guy who drives
A car wide open
Is not thinkin’
He’s just hopin’
Remedies:
•If you will talk to informed contractors who
attend classes, they will all advise you to have
the A/C contractor measure the house (one hour
measuring time), compile the information and
calculate the heating and cooling load for the
house using the ACCA industry recognized
“Manual J” protocol (two hours desk time).
•Ask the contractor to design a duct system
for you to insure that your new system will operate correctly with the proper “Static Pressure”
(two hours desk time). Manufacturers rate their
equipment to be installed with an efficient duct
system having .5” of water column. “Static
Pressure” of the average home is 1.8” of water
column. This is over 3 times the design “Static
Pressure”.
•If your house has hot and cold spots, the air
flow has some problem that needs to be investigated and corrected. Things change in your attic
over the years, animals destroy the ducting, people step on the ducting, tripping on a duct will
pull it free from the supply air or return air
plenum and roof leaks will deteriorate the equipment in the attic rapidly.
•An acceptable duct leak rate by ACCA is 3%;
the average house has a 35% to 44% leak rate.
Damage to the ducting and equipment as well as
poor installation procedures will cause the ducting to lose up to 45% of the air in the attic or
draw in 130 degree air from the attic. If the duct
system is poor the best new high efficiency air
conditioning equipment will fall short of the performance promised by the manufacturer. Both
the manufacturer and the A/C contractor will get
a black eye from the negative endorsement
given by the customer.
•90% of our houses have a return air filter
grille and ducting that are too small. Think
about this: if you can’t get the air into the system, you will not be able to get it out. This
results in several problems that result in poor
performance at best and system failure at worst.
•Ask your contractor if he is a member of the
Air Conditioning Contractors of America, this is
professional group of informed contractors that
promote education and excellence within the
heating and cooling profession. They make their
knowledge available to interested contractors
through the ACCA organization. Another question to ask your contractor, is whether his company is NATE certified? NATE is an organization
that provides testing of technician skills and
trains professionals in the A/C industry.
Forward thinking and innovative contractors use
the NATE to qualify their technicians’ skill level.
In the near future, all technicians will be required
to be NATE certified in the State of Texas.
The most effective way to insure an efficient
and long lasting A/C and Heating system is
installed, will be to become informed and by asking your contractor many questions. Insist that
your contractor provide accurate information
and measurements of your house before you
agree for the work to be done.

Texas Man Executed for Abduction / Slaying
By Michael Graczyk – The Associated Press – Huntsville, Texas
A San Antonio man with a previous conviction for manslaughter was executed
Thursday, August 17, for the abduction,
rape and fatal stabbing of a woman more
than 12 years ago.
Richard Hinojosa expressed love for his
family and asked his victim’s family to find
peace in their heart. “I pray for you.
Please find peace in your heart,” he said
looking at the parents, a brother and two
aunts of his victim. “I know you may hate
me for whatever reason. The Lord says
hate no one. I hope you find peace in your
heart. I know my words cannot help you. I
truly mean what I say.”
He indicated to the prison warden that
he had finished his statement, telling him,
“Kick the tires and light the fire. I’m going
home to see my son and my mom.”
He began chanting a prayer, repeatedly
invoking Yahweh as the lethal drugs were
being administered. Eight minutes later at
6:19 p.m. CDT he was pronounced dead.
Hinojosa, 44, acknowledged gunning
down a man in 1986 but insisted he wasn’t responsible for the slaying eight years
later of 29-year-old Terry Wright, who lived
next door. He spent 2 1/2 years in prison
for the voluntary manslaughter conviction,
then received a death sentence for
Wright’s killing.
Hinojosa’s execution was the 18th this
year in Texas — one short of last year’s
total in the nation’s most active capital
punishment state.
Two more executions are scheduled for
this month and at least six other inmates
have dates through the remainder of the
year.
If all are carried out, the total still would
fall well short of the record 40 executions
in Texas in 2000.
The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday
denied Hinojosa’s appeal that challenged
the use of the lethal drugs in the execution
process as unconstitutionally cruel.
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles
this week also refused a request for commutation or a temporary reprieve.

CHAPPED LIPS
An old cowhand came riding into town on a hot,
dry, dusty day. The local sheriff watched from his
chair in front of the saloon as the cowboy wearily
dismounted and tied his horse to the rail. The cowboy then moved slowly to the back of his horse, lifted its tail, and placed a big kiss where the sun
don’t shine. He dropped the horse’s tail, stepped
up on the walk and aimed toward the swinging
doors of the saloon.”Hold on there, Mister,” said
the sheriff. “Did I just see what I think I
saw?””Reckon you did, Sheriff. I got me some powerful chapped lips.””And that cures them?” the
Sheriff asked.”Nope, but it keeps me from lickin’
‘em.”
QUICK WIT
A woman was caught for speeding and told to
pull over to the side of the road.Realizing she didn’t
have her seat belt on, as soon as she stopped she
quickly buckled up before the officer reached her
window. After lecturing her about speeding, the cop
said, “I noticed you are wearing your seat belt. Do
you believe in wearing it at all times?””Most definitely, officer,” she replied.”I see,” said the cop,
“and do you always wear it looped through the
steering wheel?”
REPEAT SERVICE
A police officer pulled a young woman over for

HOW Did Stephen Johnson Die and WHY?
By Breck Porter — Police News
The Galveston County Medical Examiner
fixed the time of death at shortly after
midnight on Monday, April 29, 2006, but
over four months later his death is listed
as “undetermined” at the ME’s Office.
According to his mother Dorothy
Johnson of Galveston, her 54-year old son
had a long history of mental problems,
primarily bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder used to be known as manic depression. It’s a serious illness, one that can
lead to risky behavior, damaged relationships and careers, even suicidal tendencies – if it’s not treated.
Some of these symptoms were recognizable early on in Johnsons life. He went
into the Air Force after his 20th birthday,
enlisting with a promise from the recruiter
that he would get into computer training
school. According to his mother, the Air
Force “didn’t keep their word” and instead
told him that his apptitude testing indicating that he was more adaptable to be
trained as a military police officer. “He
didn’t want to be no policeman,” Mrs.
Johnson, now 78, told The Police News
during a recent interview. She said that is
when he first started experiencing times of
deep depression that soon resulted in the
Air Force discharging him for medical reasons.
Following his discharge he was treated
Stephen Johnson
at various hospitals, including the
Veterans Hospital in Houston. He had frequent run-in’s with police wherever he
went. On one occassion he brandished a
BB gun at a couple of Galveston Police
Officers who in turn opened fire on him
stiking him in an arm and a leg, sending
him to the hospital.
Mrs. Johnson said that Stephen would
periodically disappear from home.
Sometimes for a day or two and on at
least a couple of occassions he would be
gone for weeks. Each time his mother
would worry. She would call authorities to
help track him down. Sometimes he
would be found in a jail after a confontation with police who, not knowing of his illness, assumed that he was a mean,
berserk charater that just wanted to fight.
“Manic” describes an increasingly restless, energetic, talkative, reckles, powerful, euphoric period. Lavish spending
sprees or impulsive risky sex can be irresistible. Then, at some point, this high-flying mood can sprial into something darker – irritation, confusion, anger, feeling
trapped.
“Depression” describes the opposite
mood - sadness, crying, sense of worthlessnes, loss of energy, loss of pleasure,
sleep problems.
But because the pattern of highs and
lows varies for each person, bipolar disorder is a complex disease to diagnose. For
some people, mania or depression can
last for weeks or months, even for years.
For other people, bipolar disorder takes
the form of frequent and dramatic mood
shifts.
Bipolar disorder is equally difficult for
families of those affected. The condition
is the most difficult mental illness for families to accept. “Families can more easily
accept schizophrenia, to understand that
it is an illness. But when a person is
sometimes very productive, then
becomes unreasonable or irrational, it
wreaks more havoc on the family. It
seems more like bad behavior, like they
won’t straighten up,” says Dr. Michael
Aronson, MD, a clinical psychiatrist.
After listening and talking with Mrs.
Johnson, most all of these symptoms and
experiences ran true throughout the adult
life of her son, Stephen Johnson, until five
months ago, when a fisherman found his
body floating in the waters of Hitchcock
Bayou. According to Mrs. Smith, authorities have no idea how he got there or why
he died.
If you have any information which may
be helpful in solving the mystery of the
death of Stephen Johnson on April 29,
2006, you are asked to call Galveston
Crime Stoppers at 409/763-8477. You
will not be asked to identify yourself and
you may be elgible for a cash reward.

the little village of Surfside Beach and spent
the night on the beach. She didn’t want to be
at home when an irate Gerald bailed out of
jail and came after her again.
The next day Carolyn went to the Brazoria
County Women’s Shelter where she stayed for
three or four days. While she was there she
called her family and friends and told them
that she was once again going to pack up and
move back to Kansas.
She checked out of the shelter September
5th and called the folks in Kansas and told
them that she was on the way, but that she was
first going to go get her belongings out of the
house on McLemore. The next day she is seen
there with Gerald by some of the neighbors.
On the 8th Carolyn’s brother called and
talked with her and asked her to meet him in
Denver, Colorado for a gem show. She told
her brother that she was trying to leave and
go back to Kansas but that she was afraid to
leave. That was the last time he ever spoke
with his sister.
The next day the couple went to the
University of Texas Medical Branch in
Galveston. Carolyn told a counselor that
Gerald brought her there to try to get her
committed. The report stated that Carolyn
may have been suffering from menopausal
symptoms. She also told the counselor that
she was suffering physical, verbal and sexual
abuse at the hands of Gerald Long. The
physician suggested that they separate until
the marital issues could be resolved.
The day after the UTMB session, Gerald
came into possession of a Power of Attorney
from Carolyn giving him permission to sell
her truck. The document was notarized by
Jerry Allen, the phony name used by Gerald
Long to notarize fraudulent documents.
Friends had told investigators that Carolyn
once said, “If you ever see Gerald driving my
truck I’m dead.” She was very attached to
her truck and those close to her knew that
she would never sell it. “She had told all of
her friends that she was really enamored with
this Ranger pickup and that, “If you ever see
Gerald driving my truck that means I’m
dead,” said Alvin Police Sergeant Chad
Fontenot. “Well, within a week, Gerald was
driving her truck,” he said.
On Friday the 13th of September, Carolyn
kept a doctors appointment at UTMB in
Galveston. Upon leaving, a follow-up appointment was scheduled for the 30th. She would
miss that appointment.
A few days later Gerald began spreading the
word around that Carolyn had moved to
Dallas. He told his ex-wife that she was gone
for good. And on the 25th of September a
postal change-of-address card arriveed at the
post office in Wichita, Kansas listing
Carolyn’s address as 2551 Victoria Street, her
mothers address. However, she never arrived
in Wichita.
Carolyn is missing…Gone. She has disappeared but she is not formally reported as missing until her brother filed a report with police
October 1, 1991. Gerald did not say anything
or report her until December and that was after
it had been pointed out to him that the police
were looking into her disappearance.
On September 29th, Gerald met a woman
in Scooter’s Bar in Pearland, Texas and she
wound up going home with him. She was
there for about four days and she told a
neighbor that she had applied for a job at
Tomaso’s Pizza Place. This information
became useful a couple of years later as
police are still investigating the disappearance of Carolyn Long.
“Two years later we go to Fort Worth and
we’re talking with her and she is very reticent
about saying anything,” says Fontenot. “So
we’re there talking with her and she say’s that
she don’t remember much of anything and so
on. We were about to give up with her when
Sergeant Arendell who was with me says in
jest, “Well did you see any dead bodies while
you were there?” She dropped her head and
says, “Well, maybe.”
“We were totally shocked,” Fontenot continues. “She starts talking about within days of
Carolyn’s disappearing Gerald shows her this
freezer full of these packages that are
wrapped up. They are odd shapes. One of
them was two feet long, one was kind of
round and he made sort of strange comments to her. “Don’t mess with this meat
because it’s bad,” he told her.
The officers have renewed enthusiasm in
the woman and invite her to accompany them
to the local police department to be inter-
viewed by a Forensic Therapist. The therapist works with her and she begins to recall
things, like when she was in Gerald’s house
and she saw all of this women’s stuff there.
She said it struck her as odd because Gerald
had told her that Carolyn had moved. Surely
she wouldn’t have left these personal items
had she actually moved out for good.
During the next couple of days that she was
there Gerald tried to get her to sign some blank
papers. He was trying to get her to forge a
woman’s name but she couldn’t remember
what the woman’s name was however. She
refused to do it, she told the officers.
The officers convinced the woman to return
to Alvin with them where they could have her
interviewed by a forensic hypnotist employed
by the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office.
Under the hypnosis she talked about seeing
bones on the floor that Gerald picked up hurriedly and tried to hide. She also related seeing some saws with some dark stuff on them.
Following the session with the hypnotist
the woman agree to take a polygraph test. It
revealed that she actually did see all of the
things that she said she saw and that everything she had related to investigators was factual. At least she believed them to be.
The investigation has become very involved
by now and police were turning every stone to
gather information about the absent Carolyn
Long. They found a neighborhood girl who
was a juvenile at the time that related a story
about several juveniles who had broken into

Gerald’s house while he was away. There
were rumors throughout the neighborhood
about the disappearance of Carolyn. Mystery
surrounded the house at 228 McLemore and
curiosity overcame the girls. The girls had
heard about the packages in the freezer and
that’s the first thing they went to when they
got inside. Sure enough, the packages were
there. Now police have two people who have
seen the elusive packages in the freezer which
by now everyone believes is the butchered
body of Carolyn Long.
To cap that off, investigators then located a
neighbor who told them that he had been
awakened about midnight one night by a
strange noise, like something being dragged
across concrete. Looking out of his window
he saw Gerald Long dragging his home freezer out of his house, across the concrete driveway and loading it onto the back of Carolyn’s
pickup which he had been driving. He drove
away and was gone for almost two days.
Another neighbor told police about seeing
Gerald digging in his backyard. Gerald was
not known to be a gardener. Until this incident no one remembers ever seeing him work
in his yard or flower beds. It was unusual to
see him digging in the yard.
With this new information, police obtained a
search warrant for the house. They called in
evidence technicians from the Texas
Department of Public Safety and cadaver
dogs from the Texas Prison System. They
sent three highly trained cadaver dogs with
their handlers.
“We all gather and go to the house and
when we knock on the door we are greeted by
people who had rented the house from Gerald
six months ago,” explains Sgt. Fontenot. “I’m
thinking that we are going to go in there and
get that carpet with the big brown stain on it
and we’re going to get some blood residue off
it. We just need some indicator of foul play.
“The lady opens the door and the first thing
I see when I look in there was a brand new
tile floor. My heart just sank right there,” said
Fontenot, realizing that the blood stained carpet would possibly have held the secret to the
disappearance of Carolyn Long.
In talking with the new tenant she tells them
that she remembered the large stain that was
there when they moved in and that it was one
of the reasons they had the carpet removed
and replaced with the tile. She also recalled
that the carpet, at the spot where the blood
was, stuck to the pad by some brown, crusty
substance.
The cadaver dogs went into the backyard
and two of them hit on the spot where a shed
had been. “We dug around and found some
carpet fibers in the dirt but no body parts,”
said Fontenot. “We dug a four foot by four
foot by two foot deep area and found nothing.
We thought maybe that it had been a temporary storage location since the dogs had
given such strong indications.”
A machete was also recovered and sent to
the lab for analysis but revealed nothing helpful. But oddly enough, one time when Gerald
came back around and was talking to the
renter, he specifically asked them about that
machete. He had heard on the news about
the search of his house and according to the
renter he was almost in a panic asking what
the police had done there.
Police also used luminol tests in a hallway
leading to the back yard and got indications
of what they believed had been a pool of
blood. Things other than blood will cause a
reaction from luminol but the technicians on
the scene were confident this was indeed
blood and it was in the same area where the
Fort Worth woman had told about seeing the

Group Opposing Parole of Convicted Rapist

(TEXAS CITY) – “This guy would park his

toys outside, one car in the driveway,

make sure that everything fit.” That is how
Texas City Police Captain Brian Goetschius
described the Modus Operandi of convicted burglar and rapist Marsa Hall.
Hall is an inmate in the Ellis Unit of the
Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville serving two life sentences for burglarizing
homes and raping the female occupant of
one of them. Goetschius said that police
suspect Hall had raped five previous
women before police finally captured him
in 1989 as he fled from police following
the assault.
Hall was recorded by a 911 dispatcher
on July 22nd confronting a 31-year old
woman inside her home. The tape
revealed a desperate, crying woman
telling a Texas City Police dispatcher that a
man had raped her. She described him
between screams and sobs.
As she spoke to the dispatcher, scuffling
and yelling was heard in the background
as the dispatcher was directing patrol officers to the scene.

Why do children need identification?
Every parent has experienced the panic
of not knowing where their child is, if only
for a split second.
Everyday children wander off in department stores, supermarkets, amusement
parks, campgrounds and even from their
own yards.
Most are quickly recovered and returned
to thankful parents. But even with the
best parental supervision, almost 2100
children each day, about two each minute,
are reported missing to law enforcement.
Most could be recovered in short order if
parents provide investigators with a complete record of identification.
With this in mind, Brazoria County
Sheriff Charles Wagner has equipped each
of his patrol cars with child identification
kits. The free kits provide a place for parents to record vital information about their
children including medical and dental
information, fingerprints, a photo and a
strand of hair for DNA matching.
Brazoria County residents may flag
down any Sheriff’s patrol car and ask the
deputy for a kit or pick one up at the training division office in Angleton.

Stymie Cell Phone Thieves
Here is something worth knowing if you
have a mobile phone.
Have you ever wondered why phone
companies don’t seem interested in trying
to prevent the theft of mobile phones?
If you have ever lost, or had one stolen,
and if you are on a plan, you still have to
pay the plan approximately up to 24
months, and you have to buy another
handset and enter into another contract.
This is more revenue for the phone company.
There is a simple way of making lost or
stolen mobiles useless to thieves and the
phone companies know about it, but keep
it quiet.
To find your mobile phone’s serial number, key in the following on your phone:
{star–hash–zero–six–hash} (* # 0 6 #)
and a fifteen digit code will appear on the
screen.
This is unique to your handset. Write it
down and keep it safe. Should your mobile
phone get stolen, you can phone your
service provider and give them this code.
They will then be able to block your handset, so even if the thief changes the sim
card, your phone will be totally useless to
them.
You probably won’t get your phone back,
but at least you know that whoever stole it
can’t use or sell it.
If everybody did this, there would be no
point in stealing mobile phones. You may
want to relay this to as many people with
mobiles as possible.
No Charge for Directory Assistance
Phone companies are charging us $1.00
or more for 411/ information calls when
they don’t have to. When you need to use
the 411/ information option, simply dial 1800-FREE-411 or 1-800-373-3411 without
incurring a charge.
This will work on home phones and cell
phones.

TRAFFIC-RELATED FATALITIES ON THE RISE
WASHINGTON, D.C.
The number of police officers killed
nationwide during the first half of 2006
increased by more than seven percent over
the same period last year.
According to National Law Enforcement
Officer Memorial Foundation (NLEOMF)
Chairman Craig W. Floyd, one of the most
troubling trends is the growing number of
officers killed in automobile crashes. “The
number of officers killed in automobile
crashes has increased by 40 percent over
the last three decades and by 22 percent
over the past year,” Mr. Floyd stated.”For
the last eight years, the number of officers
killed in traffic-related incidents has surpassed the number of officers killed in
shootings. It appears that this trend is continuing in 2006.” He added that increased
driver training for officers, improved safety
systems in law enforcement vehicles and
citizens who are more attentive to officers
stopped on the side of the road will help to

Ex-jailer Executed for Smothering, Raping Texarkana Boy
By Michael Graczyk — Associated Press – Huntsville, Texas
Condemned inmate William Wyatt Jr.
asked for forgiveness in the moments
before he was executed for the slaying of
a 3-year-old boy but insisted repeatedly
from the Texas death chamber gurney
that he didn’t kill the child. “I did not
murder your son,” Wyatt, 41, told the
father and grandmother of little Damien
Willis as they watched him Thursday
evening, August 3, through a window as
he received a lethal injection. “I did not
do it. “I just want you to know that.”
Then he continued, asking “for all of
your forgiveness and I will see all of you
soon.” He also thanked his relatives for
their support. Eight minutes later, he
was pronounced dead.
Wyatt was sentenced to die for raping
and smothering the son of his girlfriend
at their home in Texarkana 9 1/2 years
ago.
The child’s relatives, accompanied by
Bowie County District Attorney Bobby
Lockhart, declined to speak with
reporters after the execution, the 17th
this year in Texas, the nation’s busiest
capital punishment state.
Wyatt had said in a recent death row
interview with The Associated Press that
he may have been responsible for the
drowning because he left the child alone
in a bathtub on Feb. 4, 1997. But Wyatt,
who was caring for the child while his girlfriend was at work, echoed the sentiment
he expressed Thursday, saying he didn’t
kill the boy. “He was kind of my son,”
Wyatt said. “That’s how I looked at it. I
wouldn’t hurt him, or anybody. Period.”
He pointed out that he summoned emergency medical help after discovering the
child unconscious in the tub.

Evidence, however, showed the toddler
didn’t drown but was smothered.
Authorities also determined the boy had
been sexually assaulted, both in the past
and just before he died.
Prosecutors theorized he made up the
drowning story to cover up the rape and
smothering. The execution came about
two hours after the U.S. Supreme Court
rejected an appeal that sought to block
the punishment.
A prosecution psychologist testified at
Wyatt’s capital murder trial the former
Bowie County jailer was a sexual sadist
who enjoyed inflicting pain.
Wyatt, a Detroit native known to his fellow death row inmates as “Motown,”
also gave police a statement acknowledging raping and smothering the boy.
Wyatt argued his statements – and he
gave three over three days following his
arrest – were coerced by authorities. In
his first statement after his arrest, Wyatt
said he found the child under water. A
day later, he acknowledged not telling
the truth and said he sodomized the boy
before putting him in the tub. Then the
following day, he changed his story
again, blaming something he saw on television for prompting him to sexually
assault the child and telling police of
beating and smothering the boy with a
plastic bag. “I felt threatened,” Wyatt
said, explaining his confessions.
Wyatt was arrested after physicians
determined the child likely had been the
victim of repeated sexual assaults. “One
of the pediatricians testified it was the
worst case of child abuse he’d seen,”
Michael Shepherd, the Bowie County
district attorney who prosecuted Wyatt,
said this week. Three more executions
are scheduled for this month in Texas.
Next, on Aug. 17, is Richard Hinojosa,
44, condemned for the 1994 abduction
and slaying of a Bexar County woman.

Farley Matchett was convicted in the July
1991 robbery and murder of Uries
Anderson at the victim’s home on Kittridge
Street in Houston.
Anderson was stabbed with a knife and
struck in the head with a hammer.
Matchett reportedly robbed the home of
money so he could buy crack cocaine.
He was arrested while attempting to
cash forged checks.
Records indicate that Matchett is also
suspected of committing capital murder in
Huntsville the day before the Anderson
slaying. He was living in Huntsville at the
time of the murder.
Pedro Sosa was convicted in the
November 1983 shooting death of 55-year
old Ollie F. Childress, Jr., a Wilson County
Deputy Sheriff.
Sosa and his nephew Leroy V. Sosa
abducted Deputy Childress on Texas
Highway 16 and drove his patrol car with
the deputy in the trunk to the LaVernia
State Bank.
Using the deputy’s pistol and shotgun
they robbed the bank of $51,000 then
drove to a desolate spot on Steinben Road.
There Childress was shot once in the
neck with his own .44-caliber revolver as
he lay in the trunk of the car with his
hands cuffed.
The two Sosa’s then fled in their own
vehicle but returned a short time later to
wipe the patrol car clean of fingerprints.
Finding Childress still alive, Pedro Sosa
shot him a second time in the neck. His
nephew told investigators that Sosa shot
him a second time because the deputy
had seen his face.
Enroute to San Antonio Sosa threw the
officer’s pistol and the shotgun from the
patrol car, into a creek.
On February 4, 1984 Pedro Sosa was
arrested after his car was stopped on
Interstate 35.
The men were charged with Capital
Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping and
Aggravated Robbery.
La Vernia, Texas is on the south bank of
Cibolo Creek at the junction of U.S.
Highway 87 and Farm Road 775, fifteen
miles northern of Floresville in northern
Wilson County. In 2000 the city had a population of 931.

Zamaripa, Jesse, Deputy
Fort Bend County, TX
Sheriffs Department Incident
classification: Motorcycle accident
Friday, October 15, 2004 at 0935 hours
Deputy Jesse Zamaripa was en route to
provide a funeral escort. He
was riding a fully marked
police motorcycle.
As he traveled he
overtook a truck
pulling a trailer.
Deputy Zamaripa
observed that the vehicle was being operated
with the right wheels at
the edge of the roadway. He approached
cautiously, observing no
brake lights or turn signals; he began to pass the
truck and trailer on the left. The
truck and trailer swerved off the road
to the right and then made a left turn into
a private driveway.
Deputy Zamaripa maneuvered to the left
in an attempt to avoid a collision with the
truck and trailer. He ran out of space and
was forced to lay his motorcycle down and
attempted to jump clear.
Deputy Zamaripa and his motorcycle
impacted the rear of the truck.
He attempted to use his radio to notify
dispatch but his radio was damaged.
Dispatchers were able to pick up enough
of the message to know he was in distress
but could not copy the details or location
of the incident.
An unidentified Good
Samaritan came to the
aid
of
Deputy
Zamaripa. This individual located the
Deputy’s cellular telephone and he was
able to provide radio
with details of his situation.
Deputy Zamaripa
was transported by helicopter to a trauma center where he was treated
for skeletal and muscular
injuries to his neck and back. The
attending physician reported that Deputy
Zamaripa was protected by his body
armor from life-threatening injuries.
Deputy Zamaripa resumed his duties.
The crash was investigated by the Texas
Department of Public Safety. The trooper
cited the truck operator for making an
improper turn resulting in an injury crash.

If you live in the Santa Fe area and

within the past seven years, it is likely
learned that Carolyn’s mother had received a
postcard purportedly from her daughter. It
read, “Hi Mom, working out some problems.
May be out of the country. Involves Roy.
Can’t call right now. Love Carolyn.” The
postcard was sent to a handwriting expert at
the Texas DPS Lab. The expert determined
that the handwriting was most likely Gerald’s

Gerald refused to take a polygraph test. He
was arrogant and cocky and evaded questioning by investigators.
The investigation into the mysterious disappearance of Carolyn Long continues. The

Gerald Long was responsible for the disappearance and death of Carolyn Long, he will
not
be
brought to
trail. He will
never be convicted.
Gerald
Long died on
February 9,
2001 at his
residence at
69 Melanie
Carolyn Long
Lane in an
unincorporated area of Brazoria County outside of Alvin. The report of his death said that
his wife at the time was awakened by Gerald
gasping for breath and she called the EMS.
By the time they arrived Gerald was dead.
Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease and several
other heart related problems was given as the
cause of his death.
In conclusion the only thing that we know for
sure is that Gerald Long is dead, but what
about Roy Bernard and Carolyn Bernard Long?
Did Carolyn Long leave 228 McLemore at
midnight in a home freezer? Did she arrange
the death of Roy Bernard?
What goes around comes around.
The Police News account of the disappearance of Carolyn Long is a very abbreviated
report. The investigation has amassed volumes of reports consisting of hundreds of
pages involving dozens of law enforcement
officers and public officials in dozens of cities
and counties inside and outside of Texas.
We wish to acknowledge these officers and
