Editor’s note
As I write this, Australia has just been through a week where two
shock celebrity deaths have dominated the news. The death of
Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin and Racing Car driver Peter ‘Perfect’
Brock happened while they were both doing the job they loved so
much and seemingly were unstoppable at. As their lives were so
quickly taken away, so the country went into a period of mourning,
celebrating their lives and recalling with fondness that which made
each of them so special.
The death of Irwin in particular was likened in the media to
Australia’s equivalent of the death of Princess Diana. Whilst that
comparison is something you can make your own mind up about,
there is no doubt that it has awakened a realisation in the
community about the ‘need to remember’. We were drawn to our
TV screens to watch special after special on their lives. We were
drawn to the radio where people recalled stories of meeting both
men. Thousands of flowers were placed outside Irwin’s zoo and
along Mt Panorama in honour of Brock.
It may seem insignificant but I believe this may prove to have been a
major breakthrough for the community, not just in how we grieved,
but the realisation that we needed a focal point to remember.
We have had many high profile funerals in our local communities
that have drawn the attention of many; examples appear in this
edition of Involve, but the death of
these two celebrities seems to be on
a new level. They impacted on most
of the country in such a positive
manner, so we felt a collective need
to mourn. But rather than be sombre
and reflect tearfully we did it by
rejoicing in their achievements,
with the exception of course of

The achievements of these two high profile personalities will remain
etched in Australian history. Their deeds are recorded for all to
appreciate. While these two outstanding Australians were
significant to us all, equally the life of every family member or friend
we lose is important to us. Equally they deserve a memorial and a
focal point to remember them for generations to come.
Time will tell, but as more people research their family tree and
attempt to find without success the memorials of generations past,
the importance of establishing a memorial is becoming increasingly
significant. Combined with these tragic deaths the community is
coming to terms with the fact that a life lost can be celebrated and
must be remembered – something we are all entitled to – whether
we are a celebrity or not!
A note from the CEO
InvoCare Limited recently released its half year results to the end
of June 2006. The results were well received and again reflect on
the high level of service being offered by our staff across the
country. Importantly this is also reflected through the survey of
our client families who continue to rank InvoCare service levels
highly. In turn this appreciation assists in the continued high
recommendation and community awareness of each of the
Company’s brands.
The strong results enable the Company to continue to invest in
its businesses both in terms of the physical locations themselves
and the people, which allows us to continue to set the standard
for service in the industry. In this edition of Involve there are
several articles highlighting some of the investment undertaken
by the Company in recent months, including the opening of new
locations and investing in the facilities available at existing sites.
InvoCare announced on August 18 the proposed acquisition of
the Singapore Casket Company. Established in 1920, the
company has a 10% market share. I have a close association
with the company having formerly held the position of Chairman,
when the company was owned by SCI. The purchase represents
an ideal opportunity for InvoCare to expand its operations outside
Australia. In future editions of Involve we will have an opportunity
to showcase their involvement in the Singapore community.
In July the Company announced the acquisition of Drysdale
Funerals on the Sunshine Coast, allowing us to service one of
Australia’s fastest growing community’s.

Overriding all the investment is the
commitment by staff to not just their
job and providing a service, but also
their efforts in local community in which
they operate. It is their support which
continues to enable us to thrive.
The InvoCare Limited Board
Richard Davis
continues to take a very active
approach to understanding the
ongoing factors affecting the company. To this end they have
spent time visiting operations in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth
this year. These visits also allow the Board to interact with the
staff around the country and discuss with them various initiatives
being pursued.
Our staff continue to take an active role in the Australian Funeral
Directors Association with representation on committees and in
official positions. Through these representatives the industry is
working with the various governments agencies in each state to
improve regulations governing the industry.
Staff movements at InvoCare are relatively low as highlighted by
the fact that 160 members of staff have been with us for more
than 10 years. Congratulations and thanks on behalf of present
and past staff and client families. Let me also take this
opportunity to welcome all the new staff members. Thank you to
all staff for your ongoing commitment and support, which is
demonstrated once again in this edition of Involve.

In the past 12 months there has been a significant expansion of
Simplicity Funerals locations following a commitment by the

funeral homes and as a senior member of staff with one of the
State’s largest cemeteries.
The event is part of what is hoped will begin ongoing initiatives for
the group to promote and enhance the services for seniors in
local communities.
Judy Hopwood, State Member for Hornsby said, “We welcome a

“As a Registered Nurse, I have worked in the community and in
aged care. It is clear that in Hornsby there is a high percentage of
older people who will be seeking quality care as well as
understanding when it comes time to manage a death.”
“I know that Simplicity Funerals is well regarded and will more than
adequately meet the needs of our local residents,” she added.
Hornsby Shire has a resident population of almost 35,000 people
over 55 years of age. As such, older people constitute 23% of the
Shire’s population.

members of the community are provided with the confidence and
commitment from a Council that has recognised the needs of their
community” says the Mayor of Hornsby Shire, Nick Berman.
“Simplicity is increasing their services and commitment to local
communities in support of clearly identified needs involving
information and education. At the forefront of this is the desire to
help people feel at ease as we demystify the role of the funeral
director as well as highlight the various support activities and
resources at our disposal.”
“Hornsby’s ageing population will have a significant impact on
the local services available to the community,” says Chris

Senioragency Australia.

in an area that offers a large number of aged care services.
Local Mayor, Nick Berman unveiled a plaque at the new office to
symbolise that the new outlet is officially open.
“Simplicity Funerals believe that our responsibilities go beyond the
funeral service. We have a general responsibility to provide
support for individuals and communities, and this initiative is an
expression of this,” says Philip Overduin, Regional Manager for
Simplicity Funerals.
“One of Simplicity’s core beliefs is in the
extension of the care process. This extension
is brought about by Simplicity’s commitment
to care in the community.”

acquisition
InvoCare recently acquired the two Drysdale Funerals locations
on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland. The Sunshine Coast is
one of Australia’s fastest growing areas and has a population of
over 300,000. Drysdale Funerals has built a reputation for having
quality facilities and being very well respected in the area.
Drysdale Funerals was started by Don and June Drysdale 17

“The new mausoleum crypts at Albany Creek offer a peaceful,
gentle and fresh approach and will appeal to both the Italian and
wider community. I encourage people to consider the new crypts
as a real alternative to the current facilities offered. The
mausoleum crypts take us back to the traditions used in Italy,”
said Leo Bozzi in his keynote speech.
The new crypts include a statue of Saint Pio as its centrepiece,
and are part of ongoing improvements at the Memorial Park.
Padre Pio was Beatified on 2 May 1999, and Canonised on 16
June 2002 by His Holiness Pope John Paul II before a crowd of
more than 300,000 people. The statue is of great significance to
the Italian community.
“We have seen a noticeable increase in enquiries about crypts,
and this is evidence that the many people in the local community
are embracing the traditional Italian burial methods,” adds

Building unity
To continue to improve on the consistent level of service offered
to families, InvoCare actively encourages the sharing of information
within each of its brands throughout Australia. To assist this
process, Management has established regular opportunities for
representatives from each state to come together as a
‘steering committee’.
The need for

Allan Drew Funerals at Castle Hill and Castlebrook Memorial Park
at Rouse Hill in Sydney, are ‘chipping in’ and donating a marble,

Stanhope Gardens, to be completed in October 2007.
The new diocese was created due to the immense popularity of
the region and it has been without a permanent place of worship
since its inception in October 2002.
“The new church will provide a real focus for people to form a
community. The area is made up of new families and the church
is a place where connections will be made,” says Father Paul
Ventique, the priest of the new Stanhope Gardens diocese.
“The marble altar piece will be exceptional. It has been highly
polished and represents the most sacred surface in the centre of the
church,” says Father Paul Ventique, the priest of the new diocese.

death of my father.
You were recommended by a close friend who had used your funeral
service about three years ago when his father passed away. Having
never had to organise a funeral before, I was a little concerned about
asking silly questions. I was grateful to speak with Adrienne when
I first called George Hartnett.
She provided information I didn’t even know to ask and was very
reassuring about what would take place. I couldn’t have asked for
anyone more helpful or understanding.
I will say at this point that I also phoned two other funeral companies
to obtain an idea of prices so that my mother could make her choice
but when I told her of the reception I received, she didn’t hesitate to
say “Go with George Hartnett”.
On Sunday, Mum and my brother, sister and I met with Debbie Sinclair.
Well, this just confirmed our choice. Nothing was too much trouble for
Debbie to explain, and she was very patient, caring and kind with my
mother who was feeling rather fragile after saying goodbye to the loving
husband with who she had shared a close relationship over 60 years
Debbie didn’t rush the meeting or hurry us out the door but made sure we
were comfortable with all the arrangements. My advice…Don’t let these
two ladies get away. They are great ambassadors for your company.
On behalf of my mother and my family, I commend George Hartnett
