The Bulletin Volume 154 August 7 to August 20, 2016 Cabaret Cast to Provide Exclusive Entertainment for Taylor Residents Please Note: Event Rescheduled! The New Resident Meet and Greet previously scheduled for August 4 has been rescheduled in order that it not conflict with a planned resident trip. Please join us Thursday, August 18 from 1:30 - 3:00pm in the Fireside Dining Room at Woodside to meet your newest neighbors! Refreshments will be served. Join us Saturday, August 27 at 11:00am at Woodside for a fun morning of musical theatre with the cast of The Winnipesaukee Playhouse’s production of Cabaret. Over a dozen talented singers from around the country will entertain you with musical theatre favorites - old and new accompanied by Judy Hayward on the piano. This is a musical performance you don’t want to miss, an exclusive show only to be seen by Taylor Community residents and invited guests! Please RSVP at 524-5600. Please RSVP at 366-1400. Big Meets Little First Annual Taylor Community Dog Show Deemed a Success On Wednesday, July 27 over 80 residents, staff and others gathered at Woodside for the First Annual Taylor Community Dog Show culminating the Dog Days of Summer themed events hosted by Wellness Director Tammy Levesque. Twelve dogs were entered into the competition. Judges were comprised of Residents Don Foudriat, Bev Martin, Bette Ohlson, Marge Steady and Deni Stringfellow. Bentley and Lexi take a tentative sniff, deciding they have more in common than not. Important Note Regarding Trip Sign-Ups Beginning in September, the Facilities Office will no longer be taking trip reservations at the Dial-A-Ride number. Residents wishing to RSVP for Taylor Community trips are requested to call Brenda Kean at 366-1226. Thank you! Foudriat’s dog, Crickett (shown at right), competed as well, with Brenda Kean filling in as alternate judge at that time. You may recall a past Bulletin article about Crickett, a registered therapy dog who visits libraries where he encourages children to read, as well as other retirement homes in the area. Such a nice dog! Each dog owner was asked to fill out an “application” for the show introducing their pet, how they came to meet, and what tricks (if any ) they might perform. Owners were also asked to express what they felt made their dog special, ranging from a simple “Have you SEEN him?” regarding 8-month-old Westie Max, (Continued on Page 5) Page 2 The Road Scholar Program Jane Ramsay, Road Scholar Ambassador, presents information about this not-for-profit organization which provides learning travel adventures for adults at an exceptional value. Created as Elderhostel forty years ago, the organization offers more than 5,500 all-inclusive programs annually throughout all the states and provinces in the Americas and most of the countries worldwide. Paint supplies and canvas are included in the $20.00 class fee. Please RSVP no later than August 4 at 524-5600. No experience is necessary … just the ability to have fun! Residents enjoyed a beautiful day July 22 aboard the MS Mount Washington, with a stop in Wolfeboro for lunch at Garwood’s restaurant. Don’t we have fun?! Welcome Neighbors Resident Referral Campaign Many thanks to those of you who have passed along names and addresses of people you know who may be potential residents of Taylor Community in the future. You and the people you referred will be invited to a summer picnic with delicious food, music and a chance to mingle with other residents and guests. This is probably the most important marketing event of the summer and I greatly appreciate your help. The picnic in Laconia will be August 17th and the picnic at Back Bay in Wolfeboro is on the 24th, both of them 5-7pm. Seniors Aid New Hampshire (SANH) is comprised of residents of New Hampshire Independent Living, Assisted Living and Nursing Home communities working together to improve the lives of their fellow residents and the greater community of New Hampshire. SANH works with key state leaders and policy makers on issues that affect independent living and long-term care residents allowing them to participate in the process of creating and changing long-term care policies. It is not too late to part of this important Welcome Neighbors referral campaign but you must contact the marketing department no later than Tuesday, August 9th. Call us today at 366-1400 and I’ll see you at the picnic! ~Paul Charlton This informative presentation will be followed by a live teleconference at 11:00am in the Birch Room. Join us as Kristen Schmidt shares the story of SANH and the important work that they do, on Tuesday, August 9 at 10:00am at Woodside. Please RSVP at 524-5600. Page 3 Hair Salon News Taylor Community’s Hair Salons provide excellent services for our residents using high quality products. Saving the Mountains: NH & the Creation of the National Forests Although costs for salon products and supplies have steadily increased, our pricing has not been adjusted in a very long time. Therefore, in order to preserve the same high standards for these services, pricing will be adjusted September 1, 2016. The new Menu of Services will reflect these changes. Best, Susan Denopoulos, Administrator Back Bay Presentation: The Flatlander Chronicles Weirs Times and Cocheco Times editor Brendan Smith will share stories on his adjustment to life in New Hampshire after moving here from New York thirty years ago, as they appear in his book “The Flatlander Chronicles.” Please join us on Tuesday, August 16 at 2:30pm in the Back Bay Community House, 66 Taylor Drive, Wolfeboro. Change in Dining Venue August 31 In 1992 the owners of the Homestead restaurants purchased the vacant Indian Head Bank building in Laconia. The historic brick building did not fit the theme for another Homestead location so the McDonough family went to work on developing a new theme. The end result was Fratello’s Italian Grille, a casual Italian-American restaurant featuring wood-fired brick oven pizza, steaks, seafood and Italian favorites. The name Fratello’s comes from the Italian word Fratello which means brother. In the spring of 2015, the building underwent a significant renovation where the “greenhouse” dining room was replaced by a new structure including the now focal point tower section. An outside deck was constructed off the second floor which added seating for 30 guests in the summer months. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia Campus at 5:15PM. Please call 366-1234 to sign up for this outing. New Hampshire’s White Mountains played a leading role in events leading to the Weeks Act – the law that created the eastern national forests. Focusing on Concord’s Joseph B. Walker and the Forest Society’s Philip Ayres, Marcia Schmidt Blaine explores the relationship between our mountains and the economic, environmental and aesthetic questions posed by the individuals involved in the creation of the National Forest. Ms. Schmidt Blaine is a historian of New Hampshire and New England history and Chair of the Department of History, Philosophy and Social Studies at Plymouth State University. While her academic work focuses on the development of American identity, eighteenth-century New Hampshire women and Anglo captives of the Abenaki, she also explores various aspects of White Mountains history through her work with the Museum of the White Mountains in Plymouth. Scheduled for Monday, Aug. 15 at 2 p.m., Woodside, this program is free and open to the public and made possible through a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council. Please RSVP at 366-1400. Entertainer Bucky Lewis Bucky Lewis is well-known throughout New England as an entertainer "from up north" who has one of the funniest and wittiest shows people have ever seen. "It’s a unique one-man comedy and musical comedy show that is more of an experience than a show," Lewis says. He was born in Laconia, New Hampshire to a musical family that once performed for Ronald Reagan. He now resides in Antrim with his wife Tyra and Molly, a Brittany Spaniel, on the "Funny Farm." Please join us at Woodside, on Monday, August 29 at 2:00 PM. Please RSVP at 524-5600. Page 4 Taylor Wellness Committee Survey The newly formed Taylor Community Wellness Committee is conduction a survey looking for your input regarding future activities on campus. The surveys have been distributed to everyone’s mailboxes. Please complete this survey and return it to either Tammy Levesque or Chris Guthro at Woodside, or drop it off at the front desk of any of the main buildings. Thank you in advance for your feedback. Staff Spotlight Stacy Ann Medley Stacy Ann Medley is an LPN who works 3rd shift on the Ledgeview Assisted Living unit. In the year that I have known Stacy, I have learned that she is soft spoken, kind, compassionate and a highly competent nurse. The staff appreciate her as a mentor and trusted colleague. The Residents see her as a kind and compassionate nurse. I recently received an email from a staff member because she wanted me to know how much she valued Stacy Ann: Stacy Ann, since the first time I met her here at Taylor, has been simply amazing. Whether I need assistance in Opechee Harbor or at Taylor Home, she is always there with a smile to lend a helping hand. Hands-on assistance with a resident, medication or paperwork, I never have to hesitate to ask for her help! As an LPN she treats LNAs with the greatest respect, never treating us differently due to titles, instead listening to our ideas/thoughts, adding her knowledge when needed. As I close out my thoughts, because I am sure I could ramble on, thank you for listening to my thoughts about Stacy Ann, such a kind, patient and encouraging person. Thank you. It is a privilege to work with such incredible staff. Thank you Stacy Ann for all that you do and more importantly all that you are and bring to Taylor Community! ~Mary Ellen McCormack Nine-Hole Corn Hole Course ̶ Friday, August 19 at 2:30PM. Set up like a golf course, this bean bag toss game will be set up on the Taylor Home front lawn. Come out and play! Wellness Contacts: Tammy Levesque, Director: 366-1206 Chris Guthro, Fitness/Aquatics Coordinator: 366-1405 Ledges resident Millard Smith picks string beans from his raised garden bed at Woodside. Page 5 Dog Show (Continued from Page 1) from Sharon and Larry Guild, to a typewritten 4-pager submitted by Jim Brewer about his lovely rescue dog from Texas, Chase. I believe Chase won the prize for Most Mysterious Origin. Perhaps the smallest dog entering the event, he was unaware of this and seemed to think himself biggest and most in charge. Larry and Sharon Guild’s Westie puppy, Max, doesn’t know any tricks yet but struts his stuff and wows the crowd. What prize did he win? Waggiest Tail, of course! Patti Oakley of LFHHC, who works out of Taylor’s Wellness Office, brought Lexi, an 8-month-old black Great Dane rescue and a true gentle giant. The duo took the prize for Oddest Coupe with Patty measuring in at 5-2” and Lexi, perhaps taller. LPN Liz Daniels’ Min Pin, Bentley, 7 months old and a regular fixture at Taylor Home, held his own very well for such a wee little lad, even making friends with super-sized Lexi. Bentley was also very friendly with Hank Offinger’s dog, a 100-pound black lab named Howie noted for two tricks: laying down and eating. Paula Glaude brought Fenway, age 2, a young yellow lab she described as very good at playing in the mud. Seriously though, he knows a lot of good tricks and was very obedient in the crowd. All those obedience lessons paid off, Paula! Chase in charge. Cutie! Tiny Bentley safe in Liz’s arms. My dog, 7-year-old Bruce, also a rescue (Cattle Dog/ Beagle, we think), enjoyed the attention and treats but would have preferred to have held the applause, which caused him to hide under my chair. There’s not space to mention all 12 dogs entered, but each was unique and special, and all took home a prize and goody bag. John Larson’s Shadow, age 12, took Best Over-All, because overall, he’s a very good dog! The event was deemed a huge success and we look forward to the Second Annual Taylor Community Dog Show in 2017! ~ Maureen We see you under there, Crickett! Could there be better friends? Fenway following directions. Good Boy! Who ever heard of a dog named Bruce? I can’t remember this dog’s name, but talk about wowing the crowd! Trained as a therapy dog, this one was entered by Nancy Leighley of Center Harbor. Page 6 Welcome New Staff Ken Lorden, Loudon, joins us as Maintenance Supervisor. Previously self-employed (25 years) in building and remodeling, he has 18 years experience in Assisted Living communities. Musical Performance by Peg & Cheryl Thursday, August 25 at 2:00pm, Woodside Their music speaks to all aspects of everyday life, from whimsical to poignant, serious to silly. Accompanied by stand-up bass, guitar and pennywhistle, their exquisite harmonies are the highlight of their performance. Band members Peg Chaffee and Cheryl Sager have been performing music for many years in various genres and bands. With their eclectic repertoire, including original songs and old favorites, they are sure to please all audiences. Nice & Naughty is praised as “very talented and entertaining and “great songwriters” with “wonderful harmonies.” Please RSVP at 524-5600. Save the Date! Performance at Woodside Wednesday, September 7 at 6:30pm Join us for a one-night only performance of “Love Letters” by A.R. Gurney. This funny and poignant two-person play follows the relationship of two privileged WASPs (Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd, III) through the letters they write to each other over the course of 50 years, starting in 1937. The show looks at how people grow up, grow older and confront the results of the choices they make through life. Rebecca Cole of New York City and Center Sandwich and Taylor’s own Hank Offinger perform the roles of Melissa and Andrew. Please RSVP at 524-5600.
