LABA Staff Study
Y staff gather for monthly for discussion of the texts
and themes of Blueprint, relating to their personal interests, individual work at the Y, and our collective vision of
dynamic, pluralistic programs of excellence informed by
ancient wisdom and tradition.
LABA:
the national
laboratory for
new jewish culture
LABA Co-Artistic Directors
LABA is a Jewish house of study, or beit midrash for
culture makers. In 2011-2012, LABA and the 14th
street Y will be studying the theme of Blueprint: Place,
space, structure and architecture in ancient and
contemporary Jewish expression.
Throughout next year, we will examine the complex
bonds between physical, mental and mystical spaces.
We will look at how architecture and geography are
used to create order out of chaos, separate the sacred
and profane, define the boundaries of the individual and
the collective self and create a sense of meaning and
purpose for individuals and communities.

StorahSteps on stage: StorahSteps performances
are hour-long programs, which include a unique
“StorahScroll” coloring project, a thirty to forty minute
performance featuring live music and puppetry, and
a closing, thematically relevant, craft project. Stories
are created and performed by Storahtelling artists and

within an educational setting, while preparing children

Educational research shows that emotional security is
the true foundation of learning. This pre-nursery school
program will stimulate your child’s social, physical and
cognitive development while safeguarding that security
and comfort throughout the separation process. In
the fall, adults provide a reassuring presence as your
child engages in art, music, yoga, story time, cooking,
creative movement, and imaginative play. Later in the
Fall semester, adults gradually leave the room, allowing
children to fully focus on their daily activities, their
budding friendships, and their newfound independence.
We can also recommend entertainment.
Our popular early childhood staff can do art
projects, music, or kids shows for an additional
fee — we can even provide you with an instructor
for a sports party.

14th Street Y Preschool
The 14th Street Y Preschool stimulates and supports children’s natural
curiosity about the world in which they live and play. Inspired by the Reggio
and Bank Street approaches we create learning opportunities that provoke
thinking. Children have the time to wonder, explore, touch, sense and solve
in many ways. Our certified professional, enthusiastic and nurturing staff
engages children in stimulating learning partnerships.
Guided by the firm belief that “play is a child’s work,” we have filled
our sunny, spacious classrooms with the rich and varied materials
children need to do their daily jobs. At The 14th Street Y Preschool,
children explore and experiment in the art, science, literacy, and
dramatic play centers that comprise each room. Curriculum is facilitated
through choice and through project work. Children have opportunities
for both individualized play and group collaborations. Field trips and
intergenerational community events complement these exciting classroom
activities, while our large rooftop playground ensures fresh air and outdoor
playtime all year round.
Led by professional artists from each discipline, art, movement /music
and storytelling are integral parts of The 14th Street Y Preschool and
connected to the thrust of the 14th Street Y. Weaving together Jewish
values and traditions within an age-appropriate and all-inclusive setting,
The 14th Street Y Preschool welcomes families from all backgrounds and
reflects the community we live in.

The UJA-Federation of New York provides critical support
to The Educational Alliance and The Alliance’s 14th Street
Y through general operating funding and program grants,
volunteers, training, and advocacy. With the support of
UJA, The Educational Alliance is able to provide services
to Jewish New Yorkers who are homeless and hungry
as well as older adults, scholarships for our Jewish
preschool program and summer camps, and Jewish
cultural programming. Their help is invaluable in enabling
The Alliance including the 14th Street Y to continue vital
community services that help the needy and foster Jewish
life in Lower Manhattan.
